Re: windows on a mac, but how?
Well, if by It you mean windows XP, and a ram upgrade to your old mini, I think you can get away with what you have. If you upgrade to two gig of ram that would make your xp experience a bit better. The reason you can't go higher than xp on that particular system is bootcam support. XP is it. You might get vista running but that would definitely require at least two gig of ram and you probably still wouldn't be happy with the result. This would just basically be a stopgap to last your mini til the end of it's life. By the by, if you bootcamp windows xp on that mini, nvda will work just fine as a windows screen reader and everything should work just fine the way you want it too. Hi, We’ll let you know how it goes, probably on Monday, Tuesday your time. smile. Make sure your in the right track and position though as loops like to drop on top of other loops etc. the best way to ensure this Is to go into settings. Select track settings and up the top left you'll have 2 buttons. Mine have long nonsensical names like an is system file or something. These are actually track back and forward buttons. Make sure the right track name shows near the top in the middle and then in the track view and ensure the head is at the correct time. Now tap loops, select the 1 you want and double tap and hold and it will be imported hopefully where you want it When in the loop viewer on the mac, in the list of selected loops there is a check box 2 VO right arrows from the loop name. Check with VO space and with in a second or 2 loops should start playing. There is from memory a keyboard command to do this but I've forgotten a lot unfortunately. Now interfaces. I'm a bassist/guitarist and have and love the Jam. Great clean sound, simple to use with a volume thumb wheel and an led you don't need. It sounds equally great with passive or active pickups and is found and works every time on iDevice and mac. Best birthday present I ever got myself, I mean my wife and kids got me. The only thing I'm not sure is how the circuitry would sound passing keyboard as its designed for guitar. I'm planning on using the iRig midi interface to play soft synths on my idevices and a midi interface is very different to inputting real keys but I would recommend the iRig for straight midi in through or out but don't play keys so haven't researched audio in for them sorry. Feel free to ask any questions and on iPhone there's a good chance I can help. Also, if you find a way to merge tracks on iPhone let me know. Old name would have been bouncing tracks. I want to merge multiple tracks to 1 track and know it can be done in GB but not if it can be done with VoiceOver. HTH Danny. Re: windows on a mac, but how?
You'll need sighted assistance for the windows xp and bootcamp driver installations. That version of bootcamp did not support unattended installations. Fusion would be better in this regard. It would handle the xp installation as long as you had the product key to enter during the new virtual machine wizard. I usually get the store clerk to read me the keys off of new windows cd's when i buy them. 1 gig of ram just won't cut it though. Not even for xp. Especially not fusion 5. plus unless you find a deal on it, fusion is 80 bucks or so and if you want to keep costs down… One thing about it, your fusion purchase is transferable to any new mac you buy, and your virtual machines are portable as well. Bootcamp partitions take a bit more doing to port them. I'd want to upgrade to two gb ram for fusion though really and truly. iOS Garageband: deleting tracks and expanding loops
Hi Folks, could anyone explain how to delete a track in Garageband in iOS completely? And does anyone know how to expand a loop corecctly? I set the rotor to loop, tabbed double and moved the apeared right border button by double tabbing it and pulling to the right. It worked but I didn't here anything how long the loop is right now. So I suppose there should be a better way to expand a loop. Could someone explain how to do it right? Re: [Bulk] Re: Type2Phone free this weekend
Hi Tammy, No, Type2Phone is available internationally. Try this link that I supplied yesterday to the AppleVis site under app deals, and that I posted on another mailing list. This app should work for anyone running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) or later. Version 2 (March release) supports TextExpander. It should also now work for the AppleTV, as well as iOS devices. • Type2Phone (free, but normally $4.99) by Houdah Software: https://itunes.apple.com/app/type2phone/id472717129?mt=12 I think Colin also already posted my shortened link to the AppleVis podcast, but I'll repeat it here: http://bit.ly/Wag968 HTH. Re: Nisus writer pro VS anything else
Hi. I have not used footnotes. Nisus has made some great ways to navigate through the headings you have set, it is really easy to navigate in my opinion. To make entries to a table of content is very easy, and can be done in about 2 minutes, if you know what to search for. Nisus will work on VoiceOver improvements. Converting Columns to Rows in Numbers
Hi, I'm wondering if anyone knows of a way to convert columnar text in a Pages or TexEdit document into a Numbers spreadsheet, however I need the lines of text to be converted into columns. For example: Bananas No Doubt Columbia Sony Music Inc. should be converted to: Bananas No DoubtColumbiaSony Music Inc. This way, each line maps to a column in Numbers. Re: iOS Garageband: deleting tracks and expanding loops
Much of this you may well know but I'm putting in extra information for anyone new to GarageBand on iOS because if someone had told me this it would have saved me from having to work everything out myself and saved much time and frustration in the process. As far as I'm aware you can't remove a track completely. You can delete the audio and then reuse the track however. Just select the track in settings tracks and double tap the menu button and select a new instrument if required. As for extending loops, when I loop a loop it then plays for the entire length of the section. Some times VoiceOver doesn't read out position when moving extending or shortening track sections. Either wait a bit longer after the tritone before moving the handle, move it more slowly or if all else fails, save the project by tapping menu songs and then exit GarageBand remove the app from the app chooser via double home button and try again occasionally I will take all open apps from memory and restart the iDevice. GarageBand like much apple software doesn't always play nice with VoiceOver and only saving and trying again helps. A drink or a cup of tea can often help with GB frustration I've found and add a nice walk in the fresh air when required. (Smile) Instead of selecting loop from track settings try double tapping on the loop section. The handles should appear and you can expand with out having to set loop at all. My understanding is that setting loop will make any audio repeat until the end of a section with out having to stretch anything. Some hints by the way. When using the track mixer I've found vertical navigation is great to move up and down through same controls across multiple tracks. Great for tweaking multiple track levels etc. probably obvious to most but I'm a bit slow with these things. Hints are invaluable along with chooser in GarageBand too. Also it's very helpful to know how to use volume and other such controls in iOS. Some people only know flicking up or down to move by larger increments like 10%. Double tap and hold until the tritone and moving left or right will decrease or increase and moving up or down the screen will decrease or increase the amount of change. Ie double tap and hold till tritone and move to the right and volume etc will increase very rapidly but if you first slide your finger up and then to the right and you can increase by as little as 1%. Move slowly as there can be a lag in VoiceOver giving an audible response. I move a bit and then wait a second to here how much and repeat until I get what I want. Hope some of this helps and let me know if any doesn't make sence and ill go into more detail. Danny. Regarding ZCaptcha
Hello all, Many of you have tried ZCaptcha over the past 7 months since its release. Another captcha solving service has come to my attention in the past month, called Rumola. For those who have not used it, basically it is a browser plugin that automatically fills captchas when it finds one on a page. I installed it on March 26 and have been using it since then. Every time Im on a form with a captcha, I can't say how surprised I am every time I reach the captcha field and it is already filled in. I have no intention of getting into browser plugins. I developed something in a time when there wasn't much available for the Mac, according to the resources I had available. However, I admit that Rumola is a better service, and for me has been 100% accurate in the time I have used it. I really have no interest in continuing to develop and improve ZCaptcha, especially because I'm so happy using Rumola. Right now I'm focused on my cloud Web hosting, so I really don't have time to work on much else. Anyway, ZCaptcha is still active and still being used by some, but I'm just saying publicly that there will be no updates to it, and that I would recommend Rumola from now on. Re: Converting Columns to Rows in Numbers
Hi, How about you try this in TextEdit: 1. Open the document. 2. Make sure the document is in Plain Text from under the Format menu. 3. Press cmd-f to bring up the Find dialog. 4. In the Find field, press Option-return. That's pressing the return key while the Option key is down. 5. In the Replace field, press Option-tab. That's pressing the tab-key while the Option key is down. What this does is look for return characters and replace them with tab characters. Now when you import this into Numbers, it will place the items horizontally instead of vertically. The issue that may arise though, is that if you use the Replace All functionality, the entire document will go across the Spreadsheet in columns which may not be your desired result. What I'd do to fix this, is search for the key words like Incorporated in Sony Music Incorporated then replace the tab in that case with a return. You may wish to search for the exact phrase, not just Incorporated so that things like Frustrated Incorporated or Pop Music do not confuse your replacing operation. Using this method, it should be able to essentially, divide these into groups so that those four items are placed in a row then the next song or item is placed within the next row. You'll need to do this in the order I've mentioned here as the tabs must be created first then the return dividers second. Hope this makes sense. Later... Re: Converting Columns to Rows in Numbers
Thanks Tim. One more question for anyone else on this thread. The method you mentioned is great for a list, however, what I need to do is convert four line blocks of text into four columns. In other words, I need to convert: Bananas No Doubt Columbia Records Sony Music Inc. Get Lucky Daft Punk Columbia Records Sony Music Inc. Heartbroken Meaghan Smith Capitol Records Warner Music/BMG to: Bananas No DoubtColumbiaSony Music INc. Get Lucky Daft Punk Columbia Sony Music Inc. Heartbroken Meaghan Smith Capitol Warner/BMG and so on. What I've done is pasted everything as a single column in my first worksheet which I've called Raw Input. In my second sheet, I've put a formula in to reference the Raw Input sheet and cell that I need. So, in the prior example, all song titles are listed like this: =Raw Input:Table 1:A1 =Raw Input:Table 1:A5 =Raw Input:Table 1:A9 In the next column, I've reiterated the process, however starting at A2 and going every 4 cells. I'm wondering if there's a formula to automate this process, like telling Numbers to fill down the column with every nth cell. If there's a way to do this, I'd save myself lots of time! Re: SOS with Pages
Hi, Glad to help. I'm guessing that the logic behind this is that Pages looks after the cursor position when creating the Table of Contents. Another way around this may be to tell Pages to create a Table of Contents on the first page before you start entering anything on your paper. Then it should simply create those Table of Contents entries as you all the text. Any changes should just be live updated as you type and create specific headings. Later... Re: Regarding ZCaptcha
Well, let's say it's very much a work in progress right now. I must be frank with you. I cannot yet recommend it as a main browser because there's quite a bit of play in it yet. Right now I'm focused on my cloud Web hosting, so I really don't have time to work on much else. anti virus for my new mac
Hello All, I'm new here new to mac, but have been working my way through David Woodbridge Mike (from how to be blind) Podcast series, both are excellent BTW. Anyway, I was wanting to know which antivirus program you use? Do you use Avast? I saw that was recommended in a magazine I saw for getting started with the mac. I'd like to be protected before I start downloading things from the net, like Skype. I'm slowly getting there. Last week I think I was nearly successful at downloading silverlight to fill out some forms for my doctor, I was able to click on the download now icon, but I don't know what to do next. I somehow found that I'd tried to download it 3 times, but since there was a cancel option I did that and just had them help me when I got to the doctor's. So, that leads me to my next question, when downloading something from the net, how do we access it? I think silverlight is some sort of plug in and not something that I'm likely to need again but I know I want skype and some antivirus. so, I've guessed that there is a different process from downloading things from the App Store as I did the type2phone successfully and going through Safari to download things. finder crashes when opening external disk
Dear listers, I have a Western Digital 1tb drive attached to my mac. Its file system is mac os extended, journaled, so that should all be fine. However, when I go to this drive in finder, by simply hitting command down arrow on its volume icon on the desktop, finder crashes. Voiceover says I'm still on the desktop, but my wife says she sees a window with 2 buttons: reopen, or cancel. I cannot reach this window myself using command accent, nor with vo twice f1, nor by turning vo off and back on. If my wife clicks the error window, then yes I can see it with vo. While googling, I found a solution that advises to delete all mac files from the root. I think they mean, delete all dot files and let os10 create those from scratch. But I have no way to get into the drive. This is a fresh mac os10 installation, and I haven't been in terminal since, but when I open terminal and then press my braille display up key, VoiceOver says last login, and then a date. I should normally be able to read the previous line in terminal, i.e. the result of my commands. I need to find out how to get terminal on its feet again, but that's a different problem. I'm hoping to find a way to solve this finder crash when opening the external drive, starting by deleting the files on its root that start with a period. According to a post I found on the net, that may solve finder crashes when opening an external drive. I tried command g, go to folder in finder, but that command crashes finder as well, when I type in /volumes/macserver1. macserver1 is the volume label of the external drive. Any ideas? What can I do to let finder open this drive? CrashPlan is backing it up just fine, so it should be accessible to the os. It's just that finder has problems with it. Any advice? Use AppleScripts to edit your ePub metadata in iTunes [was Re: epub and metadata.]
Hi Annie, If these ePub files are in your iTunes library, I think you can just use some of the AppleScripts for iTunes at Doug Adams' web site to automate changing the titles. The only thing I'm wondering is if the whether the epub files use the same keywords. I think that the file name field is just name, which is the same as the name track for music tracks. And for my ePub books, the author is entered into the artist field. Probably the This Tag That Tag AppleScript could be used for this. From the description, I think the way this AppleScript works is that you select your tracks in iTunes, then you run the script, which you just locate by name This Tag That Tag under the scripts menu. This menu shows up once you copy the AppleScript to a Library/iTunes/Scripts folder under your user account. If you have never used AppleScripts in iTunes before, you'll have to create the Scripts folder in this location. Once you've selected this AppleScript, a dialog menu should come up to let you choose what action you want to take with your tags: copy, append, swap, or prepend. In this case you'd select copy. Then you'd select the metadata tag fields that you'd want to use. So maybe in this case you'd want to copy the album tag to the name tag, or the artist tag to the name tag. I'm making up these examples, because I don't actually know how your ePub files are tagged, or even which fields you are using. Just note that these changes are not reversible, so if you want to be extra cautious, make a set of copies of your tracks beforehand. And just choose one ePub book to try the AppleScript out with before you run this with several files selected. It's also possible that there's a better AppleScript to use for the purposes that you want under the Managing Track Info group of AppleScripts at that site. I haven't used (or even downloaded) the AppleScript in question, although I have previously used other AppleScripts from this site before. I think you want to get the This Tag That Tag AppleScript from this URL at the dougscripts.com site: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/scripts/ss.php?sp=thistagthattag The AppleScript This Tag That Tag v.3.2 can be found as a heading level 2. Navigate with VO-Down arrow to read the description and then to read the group of two download links for downloading the script and the read me pdf file. There's also a heading level 3 description of how to download install that explains that the download file will be a .zip that opens as a .dmg file. (Navigate with VO-Down arrow here, as well, to read the description.) It also explains that you should put the script contents of the of the .dmg file into your ~/Library/iTunes/Scripts folder, and that you may have to create the Scripts folder if this is your first AppleScript under iTunes. Just use standard Finder navigation (e.g. use Command-Shift-G to go to folder, and then type or paste in the path: ~/LIbrary/iTunes/ -- or tilde slash Library slash iTunes for the directory, then create the Scripts folder, and navigate to it. You can copy and paste the AppleScript to this location. You can also save the Read me file somewhere convenient. There may be other scripts you can use, but this seemed to be one suited to your requirements. HTH. Cheers, Esther On 19 Apr 2013, at 05:32, Annie Skov Nielsen wrote: Hi. I have some epub files which has some rather strange file names, can I change them based on the metadata of the files. It would be great if there is a way to convert multiple files to correct file names based on e.g. the title field or maybe also the author field of the metadata, does anyone know how I can do that. I have tried playing a little with ITunes, but I can not get ITunes to do what I want. Thanks, Annie. I've downloaded it now and will hopefully get around to trialling it soon. Looking forward to it. Re: Regarding ZCaptcha
Found their plugins instructions for voiceover on safari: http://www.skipinput.com/bps/safari.html and to install the plugin for Firefox, Chrome or Safari follow the links here: http://www.skipinput.com/bps/install.html They do not currently have a plugin for iOS but I think their browser detect is broken and thinks any instance of Safari is on an iOS device. Right now I'm focused on my cloud Web hosting https://www.christslittleflock.org/store/clf-shared-hosting, so I really don't have time to work on much else. Anyway, ZCaptcha is still active and still being used by some, but I'm just saying publicly that there will be no updates to it, and that I would recommend Rumola from now on. Free word press blogging app for Mac OSX and iOS?
Hi everybody. MarsEdit is certainly a vo friendly choice for word press blogs but are any of you aware of a free alternative that has equal or close to equal vo accessibility? I haven't tried the word press iOS app yet but in any case, what are people using on their iOS devices regarding word press entries? Re: Very slow Internet on one Mac, but not another.
Also of interest would be to do the About This Mac and do the System Report and then goto the WiFi section. In particular there should be something called PHY Mode which will tell you how you're connected. Mine for example says 802.11N which is my wifi connection to the Airport base station. Generally 802.11 is followed by a letter such as A, B, G or N where N is the fastest/latest flavor. Also in the System Report should be a line called Signal/Noise with two numbers. Mine is -69 dBm / -88 dBm. The bigger the difference between these two numbers the better. So I have 19 dBm which seems to work pretty well. I get about 30Mbps down and 2MBps up on my cable modem connection or about 8-9MB/s copying a file from my wifi laptop to a wired Mac desktop.
