Text Edit question

2017-04-10 Thread Linda
I researched but can't find the answer. In text Edit, what is the keyboard
shortcut to creat a New Page? In Page it is command-entr but that doesn't
seem to work in Text edit. Many thanks.

Question on Pages application

2014-04-27 Thread Linda Adams
I am using Maverick on my MacBook with, I think, the most current
version of Pages. In the past, I had no problem using VO-F to search
for text in a document. It seems to work only on the current page, not
the entire document. Nor can I find a way to easily move from page to
page or to get the search command to work in the whole document. I also
tried using command-F but, once again, couldn't figure out how to get to
the text itself.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated. BTW, it works just fine in
the Text Edit application.

Linda

Password protected documents

2013-04-21 Thread Linda Adams
Hello,

I am stumped and need some help. I am using Lion on a Macbook and am
working with text edit. I have tried to create a disc image of an
individual document so it would be password protected but have not been
successful. I have been able to create a folder disc image that is
password protected in which I have put files. It won't, however, let
me edit the documents inside the disc image folder. I've repeated the
process, checking each step but can't find where I'm going wrong. I've
been told it can be done with Pages, but can I edit if I'm using text
edit and creating the disc image with the disc utility?

Thanks in advance,

Linda

Thanks much Tim,

It is now installed and my E-card selections are playing music again.
One more basic question.
I had copied the dmg file to my desk top and assume I can now delete
that from the desk top as well as the dmg file in my download folder.
The other file on my desk top is Flash Player Volume. Can I copy this
to the application folder then delete it off the desk top?

hi,

That file is the Installer package and thus should not be placed in the
Applications folder. You can either run it from the dmg or copy and
paste it to your Desktop and run it from there. Once you open it, Adobe
is less than perfect with respect to accessibility so there are some
tricks that you'll need to use. Instead of using VO navigation, use
your tab key and the spacebar. That is, tab through the dialog and VO
will read the button or element that is focused, then just press the
spacebar to activate the button or checkbox. Once everything has been
installed, there will be a Done button that you can press and all is
good.

Just use your spacebar. That is, in the Flash installer, you can tab

the spacebar. Notice, no VO keys at all, just the tab key and the

That should do it for you.

Mail Questions

2012-06-05 Thread Linda Adams
Hello,

I tried checking the archives for my questions but the Google Group page looks
a lot different and I couldn't figure out how to conduct a topic search.

I finally upgraded to Lion last week so am learning my way around the new
stuff. In Mail I had a folder set up for my Macvisionaries messages with a
rule that sent them directly to the folder. Well, I can't locate the folder.
I hear the tone announcing new mail and feel certain that's what is coming in.

In the side bar under the first level of Gmail it shows the second level Gmail
as collapsed. I've tried the old method using Option and right arrow to open
it but that doesn't do it. I've tried all other key combinations but nothing
works. I've checked menus etc. with no luck. I check the favorites but it
wasn't there either.

Assuming the folder is hiding somehow somewhere, how can I get to it?

Also, is there a link to a discussion of the Lion changes that affect Voiceover?

Thanks in advance,
Linda

New Mac-mini and old printer

2012-06-03 Thread Linda Adams
Hello everyone,

I'm getting a new Mac-mini and wanted to know if I can use an old
printer that had been connected to my PC. It is a

Canon Image Class MF4100 Series

I found a Canon support page on the web with the drivers I would need
but the install CD's that came with the printer are for Windows.

I am just confused enough over peripheral equipment that I don't have a
clue if I can use this printer or not.

Recommendations would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Mac Mail Question

2011-08-22 Thread Linda Adams
Hello again,

Well, I kept researching and found another solution to my question. I just
found that command option N will open a new mail window in which I can then
open another mailbox. Then I can easily switch between the windows to check my
inbox and my other mailbox.

This works, but if anyone knows how I can change command 2 to do the trick, I'm
still interested.

Linda

Re: unable to send mail

2011-08-19 Thread Linda Adams
Alex,

I had the exact same problem you have described. I never figured out how or
why it happened but, with the help of Jon Cohn from this list, I got it fixed.
First, he asked me to see what I found under “Connections Doctor”
Go to the Mail menu with VO M, then down arrow to the Connections Doctor under
the Window tab
In my case it showed the following information. Of course, yours may differ.
Mail is able to connect to the internet
Network diagnostics dimmed
Table with 4 rows:
1. Status; account name Gmail; Details Connection and log-in to server
succeeded
2. Status; Account name SMTP.gmail.com: Linda Adams; details Trying to log-in
to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the user name and password are correct
3. Status; Account name SMTP.gmail.com:lladams...@gmail.com; Details connection
and log-in to server succeeded
4. Status; Account name SMTP.gmail.com; Details Trying to log-in to this SMTP
account failed. Verify that the user name and password are correct.

Here was Jon’s response.

1. You have 1 e-mail reading account setup.
2. You have 3 e-mail sending accounts setup and only one is correctly working.
(#3 in your list).
I was mistaken about where the configuration for the outgoing mail server is
located.
Here are the steps you need to follow to remove the extra accounts. I suggest
you read over the entire dialog box about the "null" account before attempting
this, it might be that there are one or more outgoing messages that are trying
to get sent but are stuck. If this is the case, then the dialog should give
you the option to change the SMTP server that the messages are being sent from.
1. Open your mail preferences (command-comma).
2,. Select the accounts tab if it is not selected.
3. Find the pop-up button just to the right of "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP):"
4. At the bottom of the list in this pop-up button is "Edit SMTP Server List …"
Select this and a new window should open.
5. Select the SMTP accounts that don't belong, and click the "minus" button to
remove the account.

Once I followed his instructions, the Null account password dialog did not
occur again.
Thanks again to Jon and all the others on this list who have solved our many
problems.

Safari 5.1

Shen and Others,

I'm still having problems with Safari 5.1 and Earthlink Web Mail. My problems

Safari 5.1 is the culprit. Could someone tell me how to return to the former
Safari version. I'm not too computer literate so details would be much
appreciated.

Earthlink Web Mail

2011-08-07 Thread Linda Adams
Hi,

I've run into something that has changed and I can't figure out why. I am
using Quick Nav with Snow Leopard, so Lion is not involved. I believe a
Safari update was included the last time I did a software update but no other
changes have been made.

I wanted to see if there is an Earthlink user on this list and see if Web Mail
is doing the same on their Mac.

As of a couple of weeks ago, on the Earthlink Web Mail page, I had no problem
accessing the messages in my inbox. They may have been arranged in a table
visually, but VO read each one as if the row data was stacked on top of each
other.

I hadn't looked at it again until this past Friday and now I can't seem to
access the inbox messages. It seems like they are in a table format and I've
used VO right arrow but it won't take me to the column with the sender etc
data. I knew of one message that should be there and the find feature, VO F
took me to the subject of that message, but pressing the up/down arrows
simultaneously did not open the message as it had in the past. I'm getting
very frustrated.

Any Earthlink users with some advice for me?

Thanks in advance,
Linda

Help needed on completing a survey on Safari

2011-08-02 Thread Linda Adams
Hi,

I am trying to complete a survey and can't get past the first question. It
does not have check boxes so I assume that I need to click on the appropriate
choice. I have a laptop with a trackpad and I'm still using Snow Leopard.

In all attempts I first verified that the mouse was on the proper location
using VO command F5 and VO F5 to confirm it.

I've tried the following:
 FN 1
VO shift space (single and double tap on the space bar)
Control and trackpad
Option and return

I heard a click sound when I pressed VO shift space and thought I was okay but
when I pressed the link to go to the next question, it didn't move.

I'd appreciate it if someone would take a look at the survey and see what I'm
missing.

Here is the link to the survey
http://www.zoomerang.com/Survey/WEB22C7JWHH2TD

The survey is from Army of Women, a nonprofit organization that conducts
breast cancer research. If anyone is interested in learning about it, here is
the link to their home page.

Thanks in advance,
Linda

Re: time and hot keys?

2011-06-14 Thread Linda Adams
Colin,

I have used this to set a keyboard command in the past for toggling between Dom
and Group mode. Today, after reading your message, I attempted to set one up
to "open Skype". Once I got to the keyboard commander, tabbed to the add
button and located Skype on the table of applications, I'm missing the final
step. I tried VO space, in tabbing to see if there was a button but could find
nothing to get it. I thought maybe it would be automatically added if I just
closed the window. When I do that and go back into the keyboard list it shows
the letter I chose but does not show open application Skype next to it.
Your help would be appreciated.

Protected documents

2011-05-31 Thread Linda Adams
Hi Mac friends,

It's been a while since I've needed help but here it is. I created an
incripted dmg folder and put a file in it. I have 2 questions. I can't edit
the first file I put in the folder. I am told it is a read only file. Can I
change this without setting up a new folder? I also tried copy and paste to add
a second file and it keeps beeping back at me. Is there a special way to add a
file to the folder?

Thanks very much,
Linda

Mail on my Mac

2011-03-06 Thread Linda Adams
Hello folks,

I've been off the list for a while, having no problems until yesterday.

I was attempting to send a message, had the recipients's email address wrong
and at some point it said it couldn't send from my server and asked if I wanted
to try another server (or that is the best I can recall of the message) and
silly me said yes. I finally took care of that message but I caused a problem
with my mail boxes.

Prior to this, I had a rule set up so messages from this list went to a
Macvisionaries mailbox. All other messages went into my Gmail level 1 folder
which I keep collapsed.
Since my mistake, the Gmail level 1 folder stays empty. I can expand it and
they show up in the All mail folder just fine but are mixed in with the
Macvisionaries messages which I don't want to go through twice.

I want all other messages to go to the Gmail level 1 collapsed folder.

What can I do to fix my mistake?

Thanks very, very much,
Linda

Re: Today's Safari update says it includes "Improved stability when using VoiceOver with Safari."

2010-11-18 Thread Linda Adams
Hi folks,

I hadn't installed the OS 10.6.5 yet because I saw some postings about VO
issues. I'm hoping that the Safari update has solved those. My question is
whether I should install the OS first and then install the Safari update. If I
do them both at the same time, should it matter?

Thanks for your input,
Linda

Darcy,
I am using Imap and actually had the All Mail hidden previously. I can hide it

Apple Mail and Google

2010-11-09 Thread Linda Adams
Hi everyone,

Today I noticed my top level Gmail mailbox was collapsed. When I expanded it
I found over 6,000 messages in my "All Mail" folder. Of course, the very same
messages had already been in my Inbox or my Macvisionaries mail box and had
already been read and deleted.

Is there a way to delete all of them in one fell swoop. When I switched to
thread mode, there are still over 1,000. I checked the menus and elsewhere but
found nothing to empty a specific mailbox?

Also, is it possible to just prevent messages going to 2 mailboxes at the
same time or delete this "All Mail" mailbox or is that not advisable?

As always, thanks for your information and advice.

Linda

Saving file directly to a folder

2010-11-03 Thread Linda Adams
Hello folks,

Back again with something that sound simple but has me stumped. In text edit,
I have no problem going through the dialog that comes up when I want to save a
new file. However, I can't figure out how to save a new file to an existing
folder in my document folder. Is there a way to save it to a sub-folder?

Also, if I have a file on the Desktop and the same file in my document folder,
can editing changes to the one on the desktop be saved to the duplicate file at
the same time? It appears that they can't be saved to both files at the same
time.

Last question for now. In Mail, I began a message and wanted to save it to my
draft folder while I looked up something. I tried the tool bar save as draft
button but it was dimmed. How do I do this?

Many thanks to all of you who have helped me learn the Mac.
TIA,
Linda

Text Edit file name

2010-10-27 Thread Linda Adams
Hi folks,

I wanted to change the name of a text edit file. I used the save as feature,
entered the new name and that worked fine. I then had two files, the new one
and the old file with the old name which I sent to trash. Is there a way to
simply change the file name without creating a new file?
I did a Google search but didn't find anything that seemed to cover this.

Checking time and date

2010-10-25 Thread Linda Adams
Nektarios,

Welcome to the list.
Here is another way of checking the time with a 2 finger keyboard command.
Open up Voiceover utility with VO F8.
Interact, arrow down to commanders, then stop interacting.
VO right arrow to the keyboard tab, select it with VO spacebar.
VO right arrow once more and you will reach a check box labeled "enable
Keyboard commander", check this with VO spacebar.
Right arrow to the Okay button and press VO space bar.
VO left arrow back to commanders.
Interact, arrow up to General, then stop interacting.
VO right arrow until you reach a checked labeled "allow voiceover to be
controlled by applescripts" and check it with VO space bar.
Now to check the date and time you press the right option key with the letter T.

Password protected documents

Hi everyone,

Earlier this month Dan gave information on using disk utility to create an .dmg
file or folder for this purpose. I looked at the file menu under disk utility
and read the help file but still couldn't figure out how to do this. I guess I
want to create a folder in which I could place one or more files.

If someone could give me some directions on this, I'd appreciate it. I don't
quite understand the concept of the .dmg file/folder.

TIA,

Mysterious second Mail Account

2010-10-17 Thread Linda Adams
Hi folks,

When I set up my Mail account, I set up only one Imap Gmail account and it has
been working fine. Yesterday, I suddenly began getting a dialog message
asking for the password to an account with the user name Null. The only thing
that occured which may have caused this was my husband went to the Gmail web
site to check his email on line. He forgot his password and gave up. After
that I began getting this dialog box. I checked my Mail preferences under both
Accounts and Advanced tabs and saw only one account, mine.

Any ideas on what I can do to get rid of this Null account?

Thanks much for your help.

VoiceOver Utility

2010-10-13 Thread Linda Adams
Hello, everyone. I have gotten my Apple Mac Book working again. Now I want to
experiment with the settings in VoiceOver Utility to get as much shown to me in
a list view as I can do with Apple. I would appreciate knowing the process and
specific keystrokes when I press VO F8. What are the specific keystrokes for
seeing all the categories and all the options? The Getting Started manual says
how the window for each program is organized and which side the buttons are on
and which side the categories are on, but there is no "when you hear this
dialog, press that if you want such and such."

Thank you so much for your help. I think that if I learn what to expect and
what keystrokes I need to use to respond, I can figure out quite a bit on my
own after that.

Re: apple mail questions

2010-10-12 Thread Linda Adams
Denise,
To have your messages displayed by date, interact with the messages table.
Then right arrow over to the date column then press VO shift backslash. You
can have VO display from newest to oldest or oldest to newest by pressing VO
shift backslash again.
This also works in iTunes in the songs table.

Re: jumping to next line of text with voiceover?

2010-10-09 Thread Linda Adams
Blake,

This was one of the big adjustments I had to make when I switched. One
response suggested copying a paragraph to text edit to have a closer look.
Another suggestion was to interact and read a word at a time. If you don't
need this close of a review you can try my method. With quick nav on, I have
used the shift key with the down arrow which selects text a line at a time
which also allows me to listen to a particular line within a paragraph
again if I don't need a close look. It works pretty well for this purpose.

Navigating Mail and Safari

2010-10-05 Thread Linda Adams
Thank you so much for your help and suggestions for making navigation easier.
Sometimes just learning from people what to enable and disable for things makes
all the difference.

Yes, I tried the trackpad, although I don't know if my Snow Leopard has a Magic
Trackpad. I think it is called a Mind-Of-Its-Own trackpad because even when my
hands were near it, this made mysterious things start happening with the
computer, so my computer technician friend Rick disabled the trackpad and the
mouse by plugging in a dongle into the mouse port to make the computer think
that it had a mouse plugged in.

My Snow Leopard 10.6 wanted an update last week, and after I updated it, it
became more uncooperative, so I will have to wait for Rick to see what the
update might have changed. Until we get the machine stable again, I probably
won't be writing because I won't be able to practice until then, but once
again, thank you so much for all your help. You have given me a good place
from which to start now.

Navigating mail and Safari

2010-10-04 Thread Linda Adams
Hello, everyone. I am Linda Adams, a very new and inexperienced user of an
Apple Snow Leopard 10.6. I have been a Windoes user for ten years, and now
I am experimenting to see if the Apple Snow Leopard will be comfortably
accessible.

My computer technician friend has been worried for a while about the
increasing security problems with Windows computers and is wanting me to switch
to Apple. I would be very interested to hear from former Windows users
regarding what benefits they experience with Apple versus the Windows PC
computer.

On a more specific note, is there anything that I can set in System Preferences
or VoiceOver Utility to get rid of the table view in Mail and switch it
to a list view so that there aren't as many navigation steps to go through to
read messages?
Are there settings that I can do to allow me to read a website line by line
from the top of the page to the bottom in Safari? I like to go to catalog
websites
such as LL Bean or The Vermont Country Store where there are plain text
descriptions of every product below that product link. I want to see the web
pages
as they really are rather than just being shown links, headers, or other such
element groups.
My hands are quite small. Is it possible to change settings so that not as
many keys need to be pressed at a time to perform functions? I know about
Quick Nav and locking the VoiceOver keys, but the VoiceOver keys often need to
be unlocked to perform other commands.

Thank you for any advice and help that you can give me. I have three friends
counting on me to tell them whether Apple would be good to switch to or not.

Re: Reading messages in threads

2010-09-11 Thread Linda Adams
Kawal,

Thanks for the information. Command 1 works great to bring back the Mail
window if totally closed by accident.

I need to explain my first question a little more. If a thread has 8 messages,
I've read 3 and don't need to read he rest, instead of pressing command W 5
more times, can I clear out the remaining messages and return to the message
window? When I pressed Command option W it closed everything which is what I
wanted to avoid. Pressing command 1 takes me back to the inbox instead of the
Macvisionaries mailbox where I had been reading threads.

Thanks,
Linda

Reading messages in threads

2010-09-11 Thread Linda Adams
Hi,

I've recently switched to reading messages from this list in the thread format
and am liking the way it works. I have 2 questions. If there are messages
left on a thread and I don't need/want to read the remaining messages, is there
a quicker way to stop reading the thread or do I have to press command W until
they are all closed?

Also, I think I remember my next question being posted but don't remember the
answer. I've accidentally closed the main window so the message table no
longer is shown. I know I can close Mail and open it back up again again but
wondered if there is another way to bring back the message table.

Thanks much,
Linda

Windows won't help either. At least I couldn't figure it out. Mine is stuck

Spanish to English but can't select a different language. Here is another

Re: copying and pasting text from the web

2010-09-05 Thread Linda Adams
Eric,

I struggled with this same question and have finally settled on a method that
works flawlessly with copying text areas from the web. I get to the beginning
of the text I want to copy and silence VO. Then pressing only the shift key, I
press the down arrow
to the end of the text I want to copy. You should hear it say "highlighted".
Press command c then press command V when you are ready to past the text. Do
not interact with the text before using this method. Also, I have Quick Nav on
in case that makes a difference.

Saving VO Preferences

2010-08-26 Thread Linda Adams
Hi,

I haven't had any problems with Voiceover but after reading some recent
messages, I decided I should save my preferences which I haven't done since
buying my Macbook.

My question is the best way to do this and where to save the file.

I located the "export preferences" in the file menu under preferences in the
VO utility which seems very simple. I've read older messages which talked
about going to the library and saving the Voiceover 3 folder and others saying
to save plist files.

Will the "export preferences" be all inclusive?

Now, the silly question is where to save it? It seems to not matter but I'm
still wondering where.

Thanks,
Linda

Your tips sent me searching and, in addition to the ones listed in the Commands
help menu, I began checking the keyboard to see if there were others that
weren't listed.

To my pleasure, I found that VO Command X will take you to the next list on a
web page. This helps me a lot with a couple of the web pages I visit.

These keyboard commands are good additions to the Quick Nav. So thanks for
sending me on this path.

Re: Safari and Google?

2010-08-18 Thread Linda Adams
Courtney,

Another method that seems a little easier to me, is to press command L and
arrow to the right two times which will put you in a Google search field.

Even quicker is a short cut I learned from Esther, press command-option-F which
will put you in a Google search field from anywhere in Safari.

Spellcheck conquered

2010-08-10 Thread Linda Adams
Well, after checking the box and sending my former message, I sent myself a
message with mis-spellings and it worked like a charm. I just needed more
faith before bothering you guys.

Re: Spellchecking emails.

2010-08-10 Thread Linda Adams
Hi,

I've been intending to set the spellcheck in Mail and figured I'd go ahead and
do it when I read this thread. When I went into the sub-menu the "check before
sending" was dimmed. I expected a check-box that would be permanent. While
this message was open, I went back to the same sub-menu and it was no longer
dimmed. I checked "before sending". Now will that keep for all future emails?

Thanks in advance,
Linda

Magic Jack

2010-08-07 Thread Linda Adams
Hi everyone,

I've been trying everything I could think of to access the log out screen for
Magic Jack. After pressing command Q, it comes up with a dialog and I have to
select "yes" to completely close it. I checked the menu but that only did the
same as command Q. I tried turning tracking off and that didn't help. I tried
the window chooser but there is only one window and I can't get to the yes
button.

All suggestions welcomed.

Re: Keystrokes Wanted

2010-08-05 Thread Linda Adams

LT,

Here are a few more commands for reading text. You can find these and many
more in Chapter 4 of the Getting Started Guide which you can access by pressing
VO H and arrow down. You can access Commands help the same way.

Read a sentence: VO S

Move to the next/previous sentence: FN VO command down/up arrow

Read a paragraph; VO P

Move to the next/previous paragraph: Shift FN VO down/up arrow

Re: DTB players and thumb drives again.

2010-08-04 Thread Linda Adams
Jenny,

If you haven't solved your problem yet, here is something you can check. If
you have a standard DTB, instead of an advanced model, you need to upgrade to
at least 2.1.0 in order to read more than one book on the flash drive. If you
haven't upgraded since November, you probably don't have this upgrade. You can
check your current version by pressing the sleep button 10 times quickly with
no cartridge in the player. If you need to upgrade, there is a link on the
home page of BARD after you log in. The most recent upgrade just came out July
20.

RE: status menus messed up

2010-07-30 Thread Linda Adams
Josh,

Here is a setting that will let you check the time and date with a
simple 2 key command instead of using the Status Menu.
I got this from a posting from Ricardo Walker. It works great.

Now to check the date and time you press the right option key with the
letter T.

Hi
Somehow I messed up voiceover. when I'm in mail and press arrow keys to
edit my message up and down arrow move me by character and left and
right move me up and down lines. Also in the status menu control f8
menus I cannot hit left arrow over to clock. it just beeps at me. I
wonder what I did to cause this?

Carrie,

In case you didn't see Chris' response to Josh on the same issue, you
probably have Quick Nav turned on. To turn it off, press the left and
right arrows at the same time.
I am uncertain if this will also solve your problem with Tables. If
not,, you can re-post.

Hoping someone can help hear.
I'm not shore what's happening, so I'll try to explain as best I can.
I turned my Mac on this morning to find that voiceover won't read by
letter's when I use the left and right arrow keys, it will only read by
words.
Also using tables seamsbe acting strangely, but I cant quite pin
point how.
I think I've turned something on or off by mistake, but can't for the
life of me work out what r how to fix it. The only way I can get it to
read by letter's is to hold down shift vo command and then press left
or right arrow, I used to be able to just use the arrow keys on there

Re: mail navigation questions

2010-07-29 Thread Linda Adams
Scott,

I haven't done this myself, but here are some instructions for removing the
preview pane from Anne Robertson, a frequent and helpful contributor to this
list.

Navigate to the horizontal splitter above the message body
Bring the mouse to the VO cursor (VO command F5)
Double click with the physical mouse.

I haven't gotten a handle on clicking the mouse so if you need directions on
this, let the list know and I'm certain someone else will step up to the plate.

Re: mail navigation questions

2010-07-29 Thread Linda Adams
Scott,

To reverse your messages so the newest will be at the top, arrow over to the
date column and press VO shift backslash.

To get to the top of your message list, press shift-function-VO and the left
arrow. To get to the bottom use shift-function-VO and the right arrow.

I wish that deleting the messages from Mail would delete them off the Gmail web
site, but it doesn't.

Hello,

I find it helpful to open a link in a new tab with command-enter. When
I close the tab with command-w, I am always back where I was on the
prior page.

any of you can think of some manuals that you would like for apps that
you commonly use, would you be so kind as to let me know either through

Ok I can appreciate why this might be confusing. For myself when I was
sighted a few months ago I always preferred tabs as it visually keeps
the desktop tidy and keeps all your safari windows in one place. Plus
if I was on several different websites such as Amazon or Play i could
quickly compare prices between the two sites instead of having to keep
moving open windows around.

As a blind user now I guess it just comes down to what you are used to
and comfortable with With tabs I can quickly cycle through them with
Control + TAB. But equally so with open windows you can VO+F2 and then
select the window from the list.

So there is no right or wrong way, I would just say for a sighted person
I think most people would prefer tabs.

Does this answer your question?

In the voice utility VO+F8 you can activate sounds and this will give
you an indication when a web page has loaded. This will save you from
having to use the auto speak tor page summary read out when a web page
is loaded.

Quick Nav is toggled on and off by pressing left and right together.

To open a new tab, press command + T
To cycle through the open tabs select Control + Tab

Hope this helps.

you can also write to accessibil...@apple.com

Hey all, I hope everyone is well.

Been a while since I have posted to the list.

Anywho, a friend of mine recently got a mac, and he go the new mac, with
the wireless keyboard and mouse.

Everything was set up fine, but when I told him he could get the time by
using Option + T while voiceover was running, the command did not work.

I made sure to have him check the "Allow VoiceOver to be controlled by
AppleScript" in the VoiceOver Utility, but still no dice.

Any idea as to why this is not working as it should?

I know it iis an apple script, but as I remember it, when I loaded Snow
Leopard, my scripts worked out of the box.

Help is appreciated if you have experienced this issue before, or have
some general direction of what I could have him do.

Thanks.

Take care.

Safari 5 and Headers

2010-06-15 Thread Linda Adams
Hi folks,

I am using Quick Nav on my Macbook with Snow Leopard. I noticed today
that as I browsed a web site using headers, sometimes I could use the
right arrow to read the content under the header and sometimes I had to
stop interacting with the header in order to read the content. Has
anyone else noticed this and is Safari 5 probably causing it? I've
never had to stop interacting with a header previously.

TIA
Linda

Subject: for clarence, dom and group explanation and exercises was Re:
script to change between dom and group?

Hi, Dom and group are different approaches for navigating html areas
like web pages.

Dom mode is similar to what you would see when viewing a page using a
windows screen reader. Each item on the page, whether it be a link, a
button, a block of text, or whatever is placed one below the other
according to the screen reader at least. Dom is easiest for beginners
because it only presents one link or button or piece of text at a time
for your consideration.

Group mode arranges the page as a sighted person would see it, with
areas for different pieces of information, and all columns and tables
laid out properly. This is better for advanced users because it will
for example, present you a table in rows and columns as it was meant to
be. It will also present you things such as all the links in the site
navigation bar at once. So, if you don't want any of the links from the
sight navigation bar, you can leave it with one keypress. You get more
information at once and you can skip through the information more
quickly to find what you want.

If you want to see the difference for yourself, visit
http://www.erik-burggraaf.com. This is a small web page with very good
accessibility features.

To switch between dom and group, press vo f8 to open the voiceover
utility.
Press w or arrow down to web.
Press tab once and you will be on the radio buttons for dom or group.
Use the up and down arrows to choose the mode you want and press command
q to close the vo utility.
After you make the switch, refresh the page, command r. Your not
supposed to have to do this, but I'm a bit supersticious about it.

Try the home page in dom mode, then try it in group. Notice that not
only is access to the information easier in group, but yu actually seem
to have more information in group. Of course that's not the case, you
just have to spend more effort to find the info in dom than you do ing
group.

Then click the list of authorized resellers. Suppose you only wanted
contact info for the resellers that work with me. Assuming you are in
group mode, navigate to the first column of the table, and then vo down
the symbols until you find the first gold star. Then vo right to see
that company's name and contact info. Similarly, if you want to check a
particular company to see if they work with me, you would vo up and down
the list of company names until you found the one you wanted, then vo
left to see if it has a blue arrow or a gold star. If you switch back
to dom mode now and refresh the page, you will no longer be able to vo
up and down the columns. You'll have to sift through every piece of
info about every vender until you find the information you are looking
for.

Have fun,

Max,

The original question wasn't mine but I really appreciate learning this
keystroke, command enter.
On the same note, if I want to keep a web page open and open another one
from my bookmark bar, for example, how can I do that? Right now the
second one replaces the former page. I can get back to the former page
easy enough but sometimes I want to toggle back and forth between 2 or
more pages, keeping all of them open at the same time.

RE: Rewinding in Itunes

Esther and Alison,

Thanks for the information.

Subject: Re: Rewinding in Itunes

Hi Linda,

Allison is correct; it's easier to control rewind and fast forward
when you've downloaded an mp3 file and play it in iTunes instead of
playing it in Safari, although someone else might like to comment on
this. Cara wrote up instructions for playing mp3 files in earlier
versions of Safari and the OS, where you interacted with the HTML area
and routed your mouse cursor to the VoiceOver focus, then clicked (VO-
Shift Space or a physical click with trackpad or mouse). At that time
(a year ago) you could use space bar to play/pause and Command-Left
Arrow to rewind. If you want to experiment with this, I think you now
have multiple control locations on which to click once you interact
with the HTML page for muting, play/pause, rewind and fast forward.
At least, if you VO-Right Arrow through you'll find these spots.
Cara's old article on "Keyboard Control of Streaming Content" can be
found at maccessibility.net:
control-of-streaming-content/
 >

I usually force a download of a linked file by pressing Option
+Return. That works for all linked files (not just MP3 files) without
having to bring up a context menu. Remember that if you go to the
Blind Cool Tech web site that you should interact first on the link
before downloading. If you're looking for a recent podcast, you might
consider going to their RSS feed page instead:
<http://www.blindcooltech.com/bct.xml>
That page loads much faster, uses less resources in VoiceOver, and you
don't have to interact with the links first. As long as you're
looking for one of the last 40 podcasts, this site is easier to use.

Another point: all the newer keyboards (meaning, about the last three
years) have media control keys for playback and volume in the top
row. These let you control playback even when iTunes, or another
player, is playing in the background and another application has focus
(e.g., you're listening to music as you read your mail ). Hold
down the Fn key in combination with these keys:
Fn+F7 = rewind
Fn+F8 = play/pause
Fn+F9 = fast forward
Use the media control keys together with the system volume control keys:
Fn+F10 = mute/unmute
Fn+F11 = lower volume
Fn+F12 = raise volume

Holding down F7 while you press the Fn key will rewind through a
track; tapping F7 while you press Fn will move you to previous tracks
in your playlist or in the songs table. Holding down F9 while you
press the Fn key advances you in your track; tapping F9 while your
press the Fn key moves you to the next tracks in the songs table.

The media keys work with other media apps, as well -- e.g., VLC, DVD
player, QuickTime. Incidentally, for anyone who is using a Bluetooth
or Keyboard Dock with an iPad, the same keys at the top of the
keyboard control playback and volume (without an Fn key). (On the
Keyboard Dock, there is an extra "Home" button at the start of the top
row at the far left, but the media control keys are in the same place.)

I'll also note that on the iPad, you can go to the Blind Cool Tech web
page or feed, start the MP3 file playing (just as you do in Safari),
and have full control of rewind or advance (by touching the slider and
adjusting position in the playing track). Just another instance (like
Allison's question about rearranging bookmarks) where it's pretty easy
to work accessibly with these files; I find it easier to reorder
bookmarks in Safari on my iPad or iPod Touch since I the reordered
bookmarks get synced back to my Mac through MobileMe.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
