Re: MD: sb live! value + hoontech = ?

2000-04-19 Thread Enno Lübbers

Hi!

I just switched from my TerraTec DMX to a Soundblaster Live 1024 Player (at least
that's what it's called back here in Germany) and a hoontech digital bracket, and I
have to say, this card is awesome for - well for anything. I'm not sure whether the
analog outputs are as high-quality as the ones the DMX features, but the drivers (and
possibilities for digital out) _definitely_ are! No problem to get the optimal digital
out level (just put the wave and master sliders to 100%, and there you go). I payed
about DM 135,- for the SB Live! and about 80,- for the bracket. And I can't think of a
better combination für recording MP3s to minidisc (yes, I know, that's not really the
best quality) or editing live recordings made with minidisc or ... well, you get the
idea.

Ah, yes, I use a Sony MDS-PC2 connected to my PC.

So, Creative, that's a job well done!

CU,
  Enno

I am just trying to get an inexpensive optical in on a soundcard so that I can get my
home deck optical out hooked up to it directly. The whole sb live value ($40) and
hoontech optical in bracket (~$30) can be had for $70. I already have the Xitel, but
it only has optical out. Anyway when I switched the card to my new computer with

suggestions for an inexpensive optical in on a soundcard?

Jim,
First off, thanks for the advice...

My card is coming out of a relatively new gateway with an SBLive!
card, and the reason I don't know much about it is because it isn't mine,
I can't seem to find any other info on it in the device manager, I don't
know what is actually coming out the back. I'm staying with friends and
unfortunately I don't have any CD devices with me that have optical out.
If I can get one from this computer, then I can make disks. I wouldn't
mind I suppose getting some type of adaptor, but only if it is something
that would be useful in the future.
Do you know if one of the outputs is S/PDIF and might work with a
converter, or any other outboard solution? I guess the bottom line is if
I can find a way to do this that is cheaper than going out and buying some
boombox, that's great. Since I'm only staying in my current place for a
few months, I'm not really looking to buy a card for someone else's
computer. Worst case situation, I'll just have to wait until I can make
more MD's... :(
Thanks again...

You need an optical output header. The most popular one among the MD
community is the Hoontech one (www.hoontech.com), which is relatively
reasonably priced.

You could also build one yourself or buy one from another vendor, but I
don't know of any other vendors which make SBLive optical I/O headers...

Nope. On the back is a jack connector especially for a module, which is for
use with Minidisc.

Now the question is : is that an optical or a digital connection ?

It's TTL digital SPDIF, so you need the module (or a cheap DIY version).

Haven't tried it yet because i'm afraid i'll wreck my (precious) optical
cables..

Don't worry, it wont wreck them, it just plain wont work!

AND, in the software with the card is some stuff, especially for use with
MD...

Minidisc Centre - it's a bit grotty but it's workable.

Do i have to buy the daughterboard by hoontech or what ?

A what in the form of a module which plugs into that jack and gives you
a sort of "break out box" with optical and Coax connections. The more I look
at the card, the more I become convinced that Creative did this to try and
push people towards MP3 by creating a myth that special hardware is needed
to connect to MD. Unfortunately this seems to be working.

MD: SB Live 1024 to JB930 coax link

1999-12-06 Thread Neil Symington

Hi

I've got a SoundBlaster Live 1024 (OEM version) which I want to connect to
my Sony JB930 deck. I've bought some connectors and the Toshiba optical
connectors to experiment with. I've just soldered together a cable to
connect one of the digital outputs from the "Audio Extension" connector to
the minidisc's coax input. Before I switched everything on, I remembered
that the card's output will be at TTL levels, and the minidisc deck is
expecting lower levels.

Should the minidisc work OK with the TTL input, or will I overload the
input (and break it)?

Also, the 3.5mm "digital output" on the back of the card is described in
the help file as being a 4-pole connector. I had a look at the card and it
appears that only two pins are soldered to the card. Does anyone know how
to use this connector?

Thank you in advance for your help

Neil Symington

RE: MD: SB Live value and Hoontech addaptor.

1999-10-29 Thread Brian Blater

Craig,

I notice there wasn't any responses to your question and thought I would
jump in. I'm not an expert but up until a week ago was using the SB Live
and the hoontech DB. I had your same problem and others. At first the SB
would
pick up noise from the VIA pci bus, solved that by changing bios settings.
Then I couldn't get a red light, solved that by reinstalling everything.
Then,
just like you, got very little to no volume when recording to my 702. I
increased
the wav/mp3 out on the mixer to 100% and that made only a little difference.

I spent two days on the phone with SB support and couldn't get anything
better
than reinstall everything, no optical out support on the SB Live Value etc.
I
looked in the SB news groups and didn't get much help there and saw a lot of
other people having a lot of problems with there SB cards also. I continued
to mess with it for a little while longer with no success and finally
returned
the card. I have ordered the Hoontech Digital-XG card with the DB for
digital
in/out and will get that installed today and see how that works.

The only suggestion I have right now is to try increasing the wav/mp3 out on
the mixer and that might give you a little more volume. Otherwise your
problem
is very common with the SB Live card. I've talked with some people that have
had
no problems what so ever, then others that can't get the card to work at
all.
The only thing I can think of is that it works better with certain types of
hardware
than with others. Maybe that was my problem.

Anyways, IMHO you can find better cards with better support and for less
money than
the SB Live. A lot of people have had good luck with the Xitel Storm
Platinum also.

Good Luck
Brian

I have a SB Live value sound card and just got a hoontech
 addaptor board. I
see a red light from the optical out and my MD recorder says
 digital in. but
when I try to record it doesn't do anything (like auto-seance the audio
playing) there is no volume control for the digital out in
 software only in.
 Am I missing something?
 Thanks,

Re: MD: SB Live! skipping when playing an mp3 and copying to MD

1999-10-28 Thread Christopher Spalding

I have a SB Live! full version with both daugther
cards and have found your guessing at the problem to
be rather interesting. However, let me give you the
real problem. The problem is that the sound card is a
PCI device and as a result has to share the pci bus
with lots of other devices. There is no real fix for
the problem. I've found that a network card can cause
the problem to occur more often than other cards (some
cards can take priority thus causing the live to get
delayed data). I was able to solve the skipping
problem by moving my Live! over a PCI slot. It
doesn't seem to be an issue with IRQ sharing either.
It still shares an IRQ with other devices as it did
before, but now I can't make it skip no matter how
hard I try (that's a good thing).

I can't really give you any more suggestions
than shuffling your PCI cards around a bit. However
if don't use anything else at the same time you should
be sucessful with getting winamp to not skip on
playback (unless your HD's controller is causing the
problem).

That's all very well but i don't see how PCI congestion could make the MP3
stutter (repeat bits), I could understand it causing dropouts. It also does
this when it does something like loading an app.

I just had another idea, it could be hard disk congestion, when playing an
MP3 at about 160 Kbps it reads every 2 or 3 seconds, I've noticed that most
of the problems occur when the computer reads form or writes to the disk
(even if it's just the swap file).

(p.s. a p100 has enough power to play back mp3's and
run autocad 13 at the same time without skipping. I
used to do it all the time)

maybe but can it load AutoCAD while it's playing MP3s without skipping? It
happens when you start or close apps, it does it to me all the time.

Hey just a quick question ... what is the best way to record mp3's to MD if
i have a SB live with optical hookup. I need something that handles track
 marking etc etc.

Unfortunately, no consumer audio card seems to be able to
do that (track marking). Does anyone know if there is _any_
kind of PC equipment that is able to send more than mere
audio streams ?

For now, you can insert 3 second silence MP3s into your
playlist, or use the Winamp pause plug-in that is available here:
http://website.lineone.net/~hedstrong1/gen_paus.zip
Don't know if that one works well though.

Alexander - Would it be so hard to create track marks ? I don't think so.

the Sblive expecially liveware 2.0 and 2.1 are what we call bloatware.
They put so much crap in the registry (8 to 9 meg I believe) that you

What you are noticing is the registry bloat. Since it is bigger it
takes longer to load and takes up more memory... (you get the idea)

False alarm, it just wasn't turned on in the mixer. I have both the
digital and the analog connections made and the mixer will enable or
disable either or both.

Now the thing I can't figure out is why the mixer doesn't show balance
controls. When I record form the CD inputs, either digitally or analog,
the result is a stereo wav file. However, I should be able to adjust
the balance controls and pan the image from the right to the left and
vise versa. Soon I will be able to copy some MDs to my computer to play
with them.

MD: SB Live value question

1999-08-16 Thread J. Coon

I just got the SB Live Value and the Hoontech cards. I was wonder if
there would be any point to connecting both the digital and analog
cables between the SB live value and the CD ROM? It isn't clear in the
instrutions if you should use one or the other, or both.

Do connect only the Digital calble, it will produce much less noise...

I actually don't know what will happen if you connect both, which would
the SB prefer by default?

Cheers.

Sorry fer the typo, it was 'sposed to read "UK and the rest of Europe."
However, maybe I should have included Asia, or whatever the Middle East
is part of.

I just got my SB Live Value and Hoontech card. SB live from www.buy.com
and Hootech card from Votronics or what ever it is in Canada. (I
checked the email I got from them and the web site address (URL for the
uninformed) was not on it. Anyway, both companies had excellant
service. Same day or next day shipping. (That doesn't mean you get it
the next day, just that it is shipped the next day.)Now I gotta
install it when I get the time.

What software should I use to record some MP3 files from my trusty
MZR30?

Re: MD: SB Live Value OEM may not be the same as SB Live Value.

1999-01-03 Thread Alexander Dietrich

Hi,

with the digital I/O daughter boards. There is a bank of pins on
the right hand side of the board labelled AUD_EXT (usually 12 pins
on the value cards, but mine has 40 like the non-value edition SB
Live). Hoontech ships a combo-adaptor with the I/O III that connects

There is now a new version of the Live! called "1024 Player", which
has a 40 pin connector like the full version and no digital CD
connector. It also has a digital output on the back of the card,
maybe that's how you can identify it.

Alexander - Creative will GPL their drivers, way to go !

Jim,

My SB Live Value OEM certainly has the digital connector on board
for interfacing the CD-ROM drive, but that isn't how you interface
with the digital I/O daughter boards. There is a bank of pins on
the right hand side of the board labelled AUD_EXT (usually 12 pins
on the value cards, but mine has 40 like the non-value edition SB
Live). Hoontech ships a combo-adaptor with the I/O III that connects
to the AUD_EXT pins of both the SB Live and the SB Live Value. Plug
it in and you have optical in/out, coax in/out, cd digital in, etc.

The SB Live Value that came preinstalled in my Dell is a special OEM
version. Look at the top right hand side of the board and you'll see
a model number stamped on it - mine says "Model CT4780". The Hoontech
bracket has an adaptor that you physically plug into the boards AUD_EXT
connector pins. The trouble I had is that this specific model of the
SB Live Value has a capacitor solderered on the board right near the
AUD_EXT pins that prevents you from completely seating the I/O III
adaptor. It also has a newer 40 pin connector than other SB Live Value
cards that use a 12 pin connector. I have pictures that I can mail to
  you if you're seriously interested.

My son just got a SB Live Value OEM version. IT seems that it didn't
have digital I/O capablity. He said something about the connector for
the CD digital input was missing and it only had the silk screening the
indicated it's position. He returned it to the local computer store
and and went to a different one and got the right version of the SB
 live value card.
