It was released in 1894 so the West was essentially won although by then
although there continued to be minor skirmishes - Poncho Via (sp?) for one
and I believe Teddy Roosevelt used some during the San Juan unpleasantness
although the mod 1903 bolt action was the standard USA issue. Some powers
that (used to) be believed soldiers would waste ammo if given the means to
lay down a lot of lead! The opposite is preferable, of course. Anyway, -
the Mod. 94 is the last iteration of the Winchester Level action - the same
design continued to be produced until the early 90s although Win modified it
somewhat to attract new customers. I have one called Ranger in 30-30 which
is the same as the old Mod. 94 except for lacking the hooded front sight and
having slightly shorter barrel. Similar mods were released occassional
during the years since 1894. At least that's how I remember it without
having to resort to the history books --

The Winchester factory in Conn. recently closed its doors for good it
appears.

So, where does the Winchester 94 fit in the scheme of things historical?

sadly, lever action cavalry guns are no longer made under the winchester

useful "brush" gun and are as good as anything at all inside of 100

How about this for a new topic of discussion:

Kleb goes to the RustyQ via Tennessee and drives Duff's forward-only 240D
over to the RustyQ to swap it's engine into the parts 240D that Rusty
apparently gave to Kleb last year. The gang all pitches in to see how
quickly the job can be completed once Kleb rolls up in the forward-only

Now that would be an adventure!

Now this is the gary we all know and love.

Gary Hurst wrote:

when i moved to atlanta, i moved to what appeared to be a very nice
apartment complex in norcross.

people moved out. less nice people moved in. i didn't pay it any real
attention.

in short order, it became a slum. it wasn't that bad for me as i was ok
with most of my neighbors, except the crackheads would get on my nerves.
(one woman bangs on my door at 2AM screaming it's an emergency and she needs
to use my phone. so i give her my phone. at 2:30, the phone is not
returned, so i go outside to see what is going on. she is sitting on my
steps with her 2 young children and a phone book desperately trying to order
pizza.)

violence became a matter of course. one hot summer night, a friendly
discussion amongst the drug addicts became a heated debate over whether
shaka zulu or mike tyson was a greater hero and roll model. both sides
presented interesting arguments, but there was too much passion over this
issue and the next thing you know, someone is stabbed.

and then came the coup de grace for me. the drug trade in the complex was
pretty well organized and generally went on without incident. everyone knew
where they stood. however, a new fellow moved in next door to me, and he
felt he could independently distribute drugs from his apartment. i suppose
it was silly of him to think this as such franchises are generally well
protected once allocated, but he just went and did it anyway.

so one of the other guys came to shoot him. but he was ready. and the two
met to settle their difference. one was on one side of the 250 and the
other on the other side. they emptied their clips moving around my car.
both were hit and bleeding on the ground.

naturally, i found this situation pretty stressful, so i went to my car to
get one of the cigarettes i kept there. a very nice detective asked me what
exactly i was doing. i explained that he needn't worry as i am the owner of
the car. he was dumbfounded by my reply, but politely explained that one
cannot simply enter a crime scene and go get a smoke, even if one is the
rightful owner of the vehicle.

and then came a moment of epiphany. i asked him how long it should take
before i might get a cig. he explained that it all depends on whether
either chap dies. if one dies, then they will be there all night and will
conduct a proper investigation. if no one dies, they will pack up and go
home and it will be as if nothing ever happened. in a few minutes, the
hospital called and informed the detective that no one appears to have life
threatening injuries, so they packed up the investigation and left. i got
my cig and pondered the absurdity of thinking that i have a country anymore.

i moved shortly thereafter.

Subject: [MBZ] Another Transmission Problem

I have a problem with my 85 300SD transmission that I would like to
explore. The transmission and torque converter were replaced in
Oct 2003. It has logged 30k miles. I bought it from Rusty. It is filled
with Mobil1Synthetic fluid.

It has been performing flawlessly until recently.

In the past few weeks, I noticed the forward shifts, all of them, where
harsher than in the past. I attributed this to vacuum and made a note
to go over the vac system soon. However, yesterday I parked the car
and made a quick dash into a store. I returned to the car, fired it up,
put it in drive, but the transmission did not engage. Not forward or
reverse. Revving up the engine makes no difference. Fluid level
fine, nice and pink.

Other than the harsher shifts, there were no other symptoms, sounds,
on-the-road problems, or fluid leaks. It simply stopped working.

Does this sound like a valve body seal problem? Maybe a bad torque
converter? Modulator?

Regards,
Bill Phelps

yes, closed doors. there are lots of efforts to find someone to take
over, so there is some hope.

the 94 was a john browning design and would be the lever action we
would generally have the greatest familiarity with. it's a sweet gun,
but you find most of them in 30-30, which is just not that interesting
a cartridge for me.

the gun is of such worth that it was produced up until the factory
closed its doors a few months ago. so many of brownings guns are as
useful today as they day they were first produced. i mean, is there
really a better pistol than the 1911?

Re: [MBZ] Might be driving the firetruck to the Q

2006-10-26 Thread Luther Gulseth
sounds like you need the master of schmooze (me) to get the shop working in
your favor. Today, a truck blew out a wheel seal less than 5 miles from the
International dealer in Louisville, KY. He was on the way to pick up a load of
parts (that was already close to late) for Nissan headed to the plant in
Smyrna, TN. OOP$. Called the shop there and the service writer told me it
would be mid-way into second shift before they could work on the truck. OUCH.
That could cost u$ $10,000-20,000 (depend$ on how much a DC-9 is going for that
day) if the truck's not fixed before then. So, I waited about 20 minutes, and
called the service manager and explained the situation to him. Hearing that it
could cost one of IHC's large (and loyal) customers $10-20k if the load of
Nissan parts shut down their plant, he said he would get the truck right in.
70 minutes later the truck was fixed and they were calling me for the $55.60
bill. Sweet success, and I have the dispatchers bowing at!
  my
feet. MMM, Power :D

Re: [MBZ] OT - Old Rifles

2006-10-26 Thread Jim Cathey

the 94 was a john browning design and would be the lever action we
would generally have the greatest familiarity with. it's a sweet gun,
but you find most of them in 30-30, which is just not that interesting
a cartridge for me.

I have one in .44 mag. I like .44 mag, don't ask me why. I prefer
the medium loads, not the hot stuff. If I was after deer, the 30-30
would be a better choice (in 94's) I'm sure. I don't have one of
those, but I do have a pot-gun in 45-70/.22 that's probably good
for taking rabbit-chasing deer. Get the rabbit for lunch, and
the deer for dinner! (I don't hunt, however. Only old Mercedes.)

useful today as they day they were first produced. i mean, is there
really a better pistol than the 1911?

Sure. Depends on your purpose, of course. For swimming armed in
salt water it's hard to beat a Glock, for example. For pure esthetics,
though, the 1911 is pretty sweet. Your best bet is to own one of
everything!

[MBZ] sluggish running 300Se.

2006-10-26 Thread M.Afzaal.Khan
the 300Se /103 engine seems to be sluggish from idle to about 2200RPM, then the
 acceleration is quite brisk.

the engine has freshly replaced electric consumables including the throttle
plate potentiometer, fuel pump and filter.

I have slightly leaned out then richened the mixture but still, around 2200 RMP
is the point when the engine becomes brisk and eager to pull to the limit.
Is it a erratic EHA unit ?
Input will be most appreciated

Iron equals wear on steel or cast iron parts, but if it is indeed 20%
less than the last oil change, you may be correct.

You may also be seeing less wear, too. It's not carbon being released
so much a "hard sludge" being dissolved, though.

Hey OK Don, I am skeptical of your fractional "accomplishments". Somewhere
in there you had to achieve 100 percent of a B.A. degree.

I can! Since you mention it, I achieved 1/16 of a B.S. in chemistry, which
is 11/16 more pitiful than your failure to reach closure.

Also, my undergrad Geology degree is a B.A. and not a B.S. - how sad is
that?

[MBZ] 1990 300SE - Head Gasket

2006-10-26 Thread rmcmail
Dear Mz Friends,
I have an offer to replace a head gasket on my 1990 300SE at $1,000. How does
that sound?
What's the probability of the head being warped? The car overheated but never
pegged the temp guage. I have oil mixed in the anti-freeze but not the other
way around.
If the head is warped - what additional costs can I expect (i.e. to have the
same shop do it when it is down with the head gasket replacement?
Thanks very much,
Les

Check the timing chain, they dont' last all that long in an M103

all Winchester lever guns.
2 model 94s, one is serial number 5,xxx in 38-55, fully octagonal barrel, no
hood on the front sight.
The other is later but has the very rare semi-octagonal barrel its chambered in
32 Winchester.

The third rifle is a model 71 in .348 Winchester that I used when I shot a

My dad had a lever action Winchester 38-40 for a while. I remember it
having an octagonal barrel, and it used a short cartridge. It was nice,

Of all the guns my Dad owns there are only 3 I really care about and
they're all Winchester lever guns.
2 model 94s, one is serial number 5,xxx in 38-55, fully octagonal
barrel, no hood on the front sight.
The other is later but has the very rare semi-octagonal barrel its
chambered in 32 Winchester.

The third rifle is a model 71 in .348 Winchester that I used when I shot
a moose in '99.

yes, closed doors. there are lots of efforts to find someone to take
over, so there is some hope.

the 94 was a john browning design and would be the lever action we
would generally have the greatest familiarity with. it's a sweet gun,
but you find most of them in 30-30, which is just not that interesting
a cartridge for me.

the gun is of such worth that it was produced up until the factory
closed its doors a few months ago. so many of brownings guns are as
useful today as they day they were first produced. i mean, is there
really a better pistol than the 1911?

[MBZ] Brake booster woes

2006-10-26 Thread Curt Raymond
The power brakes on my 190D get a little worse every time its a little colder.
Today they took a good mile or two before they were real reliable.
I'm going to start troubleshooting and replacing but first;
The vacuum hose to the brake booster is a different kind of hose than that
which goes to the shutoff valve. Its twice the diameter and plastic. I *think*
my other cars have had similar stuff but I'm not sure. One place where it goes
through a bracket has abraded some, I imagine there should be a gromet there...
I plan to replace it. I can't find anything on Rusty's site other than regular
vacuum hose. What should I get?

Thanks
-Curt

Loren, if your '88 is like my '87, the angled trim strip to the inside
of the grille can be pried up. There are two screws underneath. A
stubby screwdriver and a helper with small hands will help to get them
out---there isn't much clearance between the windshield and dash at
that point. After that the grille comes out pretty easily---it has to
be slid towards the inside, out from under some trim at the A-pillar,
and then up. At that point I think it's obvious how to get the
speakers themselves out. I seem to remember that they're just held in
by friction, but replacements will probably have to be screwed down
into new holes unless you shell out for the Rainbows that are an exact
fit (i.e. $$$).

Re: [MBZ] OT - Old Rifles

2006-10-26 Thread Curt Raymond

I didn't think the 94 was chambered in pistol cartridges like the 38-40
although it may have been.
The 38-55 is a much longer cartridge although it uses the same diameter bullets.
It was good on most large game out to about 100 yards although its a bit small
for moose.
It was also quite popular as a paper puncher out to 200 yards because of its
flat tradjectory.

Yup, Rusty got me a better deal on injector lines than the dealer could a
couple weeks ago.
I hate to call just to banter around questions like this so I pose them here
first.

I need injector line clips too, Fred sent me pictures of his having 5 clips, my
car had 1 and it was broken... Guess thats why the line broke.

So $42.50 gets me the hose, I presume theres a grommet too or is it included? I
imagine its a tight fit on the line.

lever actions can't feed spitzer type bullets. the paradigm for lever
actions are flat and kinda stumpy up against flat and stumpy. that's why
you see all the lever actions in 30-30 and not 30 '06.

Re: [MBZ] Was: Kettle, pot, black -Now: Qualifications

2006-10-26 Thread OK Don

It's a long story, but includes medical school not requiring a degree,
only the prerequisites, not being accepted, working in photography and
publications, getting married, kids, all of that. I'm now an IT
engineer (the calculus helped me meet the MQ's). A degree doesn't seem
that important now. I have the education, just not the paper (140+
hours).

I can! Since you mention it, I achieved 1/16 of a B.S. in chemistry, which
is 11/16 more pitiful than your failure to reach closure.

Also, my undergrad Geology degree is a B.A. and not a B.S. - how sad is
that?

I never really thought about it before, but it sure makes sense upon
reflection. Those little pointy bullets probably would not work well
jammed up against another center fire cartridge--or maybe they would
work too well. I learn something every day.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Old Rifles

2006-10-26 Thread Curt Raymond

Thats because the cartridge was centerfire and the rifle probably had tubular
magazine.
If you used pointed bullets in a tubular mag its quite possible one of the
bullets would strike the primer
of the cartridge in front of it hard enough to set it off. That'd be as they
say "bad".
So almost all lever guns used flat bullets.

The exception I can think of offhand was the Savage model 99 which used a
rotary magazine. I've got one I inherited from my Grandfather chambered in .300
Savage.
IIRC it was reputed to be the smoothest levergun ever.

Too broad a statement I think... Witness the Savage 99 like I mentioned before.
.300 Savage is alot more like 30.06 than 30-30.

The bullet thing is alot more about the magazine than the action.
I think what you mean is that a lever gun's action favors a rimmed cartridge
like 30-30 vs a rimless like 30.06.
Thats true but I think mostly because of the way the extractors worked on older
lever guns which was partly because of metalurgy.
Most old lever guns throw the case straight up. Easy to design, and reliable,
bad if you want a scope and difficult to do with a rimless cartridge.
Newer guns side eject, more difficult to design and implement, better for
scopes and makes use of a rimless case much easier.

that point. After that the grille comes out pretty easily---it has to
be slid towards the inside, out from under some trim at the A-pillar,
and then up. At that point I think it's obvious how to get the
speakers themselves out. I seem to remember that they're just held in

fit (i.e. $$$).

Re: [MBZ] 1990 300SE - Head Gasket

2006-10-26 Thread LarryT

Hi Les,
Its hard to say if $1000 is fair without knowing the prevailing labor rate
in your area. But think of what's involved. The fuel injection and intake
system must come off - the exhaust must be released, the distr removed with
the wires, the cam covers removed, the timing chain released, the head bolts
removed carefully, then the head can be removed.
The head is then lifted off and a machine shop checks the mating surface for
flatness. If needed it will be stripped of components and the mating
surface machined until it is perfectly flat. Then it is reassembled and
back at the shop.

While the head is being done, the shop is inspecting the engine and draining
the cooling system and flushing the oil to remove all water. This must be
done quickly before the water starts damaging the soft metals. The mating
surface of the engine top is also inspected for flatness but it does not
often attention.

Then the components are reassembed. Cam timing must be done, The timing
chain must aling properly with the components it engages, etc.

If the labor rate is $100/hour they'll only be working 10 hours before
reaching $1000 - they'll be working pretty quickly.

I don't recall how many hours it takes to do this work - it would take me
longer than 10 hours but I'm old, slow and careful. A shop that does this
all the time should do it pretty quick. But IMO, 10 hours is pretty quick.

Dear Mz Friends,
I have an offer to replace a head gasket on my 1990 300SE at $1,000. How
does that sound?
What's the probability of the head being warped? The car overheated but
never pegged the temp guage. I have oil mixed in the anti-freeze but not
the other way around.
If the head is warped - what additional costs can I expect (i.e. to have
the same shop do it when it is down with the head gasket replacement?

Thanks very much,

the 94 was a john browning design and would be the lever action we
would generally have the greatest familiarity with. it's a sweet gun,
but you find most of them in 30-30, which is just not that interesting
a cartridge for me.

Your best bet is to own one of
everything!

the 300Se /103 engine seems to be sluggish from idle to about 2200RPM,
then the acceleration is quite brisk.

I did this recently on my W201 - I imagine that a W124 would be very similar

I needed to use a very small, and very short, Phillips screwdriver to undo
the two screws at the rear of the grille. The front of the grille 'pegs'
into the dash. Lift the rear up, and the grille back

My speakers lifted out, with a spring clip to hold them in

Perhaps in the nutritional components and their relation to RDA, with a few
chapters on the development and biases of the RDA itself. I would suggest
an in-depth analysis of differences in gastric chemistry of test subjects,
relating that to the overall nutritional effectiveness of the components of
the sandwiches, with a differentiation study of male/female, Anglo, Asian,
etc. You will, of course, want to pay special attention to the residue of
the test products as well as blood chemistry of the test subjects. Bonus
points for the changes of those chemistries with bulimia. Then, of course,
you need a thesis and you need to demonstrate that it actually does - or
could - make a difference somewhere by designing and doing a project. Give
it a year to set up after you have mastered the chemistry and nutrition
involved, identified levels of sandwich use in different communities, and
found an accredited degree granting institution that will monitor the
program and grant the degree. As a bonus, as Larry the cable guy suggests,
at least teach the ESL fast food connections you make some d**m English,
such as the proper way to say sammich. Good luck.
You can also get a doctorate for $20 or so over the internet if that seems
too much effort ...
Seek for hidden meaning in the third sentence ...

OK we know AS is nowhere near a Pubbie, that was some subtle irony, in
no way intended to offend, start flames, send the list off to the ozone
(well, maybe not the ozone, that is too controversial), or whatever. IT
WAS A JOKE!!! Lame maybe, but there you go. I kinda like pinging ALL
my friends and colleagues with stuff that is not mean or personal -- I
get plenty back too! It's all meant as respectful joshing among people
who are confident in their own selves. Caint we all jus git along and
laugh at ourselves and others? Some people are just way way way too
sensitive or self-important or touchy or something. I thought anyone
driving some old diesel or other Benz would have plenty of time to
ponder the subtleties and ironies of life as they motor along at a
stately pace, or stare at the engine bay contemplating the vagaries of
glow plugs or the logic of German engineering. There's even guys here
with Saabs and Volvos and Citroens fger cryin out loud. Some stuff just
aint worth the trouble it will cause to get upset about it.

Besides, I was going to say he was already a Demo, but thought it would
be even less subtle and I might have to explain it to y'all.

Re: [MBZ] sluggish running 300Se.

2006-10-26 Thread Hendrik Riessen
The chain in the 103 is reputed to be a relatively reliable item, when I
mean relative I am speaking of the M102 which formed the basis of 103.
The 103 is a smoother, more balanced motor that does not chew chains as much
as the 102.
If you don't mind me asking Peter, what forms your basis for stating that
misadjusted valves influence the motor in such a way? From what I know
misadjusted valves tend to behave the same across the rev range, sure more
noticable at low revs but affect the engine at all revs. Poor fuel economy
is a sign of valves out of adjustment.
However this is not to say that they do not wear. Any idea of how much work
the chain has done?
In my experience these motors do tend to be a bit sluggish at low rpm's but
work better in the higher rev range. This is part of the design.
One thing to check is the timing advance and retard, as far as I know this
is all done by the little black box which sits in the engine bay, on my 201
there is a vaccum line going to it. Does yours have a vaccy line?
The other possibility is fuel supply(not pump or filter but the fuel
distributor sensor plate sticking) or perhaps wonky O2 sensor. I have
recently build a tester for the O2 sensor and seeing that they are cheap to
make, I may hardwire one into my 201.

Check the timing chain, they dont' last all that long in an M103
(single row chain!), and your symptoms sound a great deal like late
valve timing -- the power is still there, but it doesn't show up until
high rpm.

Re: [MBZ] sluggish running 300Se.

2006-10-26 Thread Peter Frederick
They are not misadjusted, they are opening and closing late in relation
to crank/piston position and ignition timing. This interferes with air
flow quite a bit at low charge density/low velocity. The effect is
much less as the charge density goes up and the velocity in the intake
runners increases.

The M103 chain is a weak sister -- they only last 100,000 miles under
the best conditions (synthetic oil) and will wear sooner if you use
dino oil.

It is exactly the same chain as the M102 and is pulling four more
valves...

Well, remember, a two-cycle has twice the power strokes per rev of a
four-cycle, so a 3-cylinder two-cycle should run a lot like a four-cycle
V6. I've never driven a two-cycle car but I'm curious. Two-cycle

Should be okay if you treat it like you would injector lines -- make
sure it's not under stress and not going to be flexed. Copper
work-hardens and becomes brittle when it flexes. I would use stranded
from the first plug in the 'chain' to the relay. VWs are wired roughly
this way, with a copper bus bar that lays across the tops of the plugs
and connects them together.
