Re: [MBZ] methanol........the fuel of the future from the past
The reason that it causes blindness is it attacks and destroys the optic nerve. I seem to remember this process taking some time and I think they said it was one of those chemicals that your body has trouble getting rid of, i.e. it tends to build up over time to get to the strength required to do the damage. My recollection (possibly faulty) is that methanol, like ethanol, is broken down by the liver but that its metabolic byproduct is formaldehyde, which isn't all that good for you. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Spats? You mean those white "leggins" my brothers wore in boot camp in '39 and '40 and that I played with as a child; also wore on AFROTC drill team and OCS honor guard? Re: [MBZ] Mobil 1 at Walmart
I went to the local El Mercado de Wal last week and they had about 8 kinds of M1, and it was $22 a jug. I bought 3 10W30s (extended range) to change oil in 3 vehicles, they had the turbodiesel truck, 15W50, and all the other flavors too, lots of it. You should ask if you want something, I'm sure they could have it in a couple of days -- they have monster distribution centers here and there and trucks coming every day. --R Allan Streib wrote: Last time I was at Wal-Mart they did not have any M1 except 5W-30 in the big jugs. Re: [MBZ] methanol........the fuel of the future from the past
We had a chiller that used Methanol to get down to very low temperatures. When our Health & Safety folks found out that we had it they set down some very strict rules when handling the Methanol or just an open container in the room. We always had to be wearing a respirator, face shield, long sleeve gloves and a rubber apron. On the event of a spill over a few ounces the lab must be cleared immediately and security called. The reason that it causes blindness is it attacks and destroys the optic nerve. I seem to remember this process taking some time and I think they said it was one of those chemicals that your body has trouble getting rid of, i.e. it tends to build up over time to get to the strength required to do the damage. This was of course for absorption and inhalation not ingestion that will make you quite ill right away. The other nasty thing about using any alcohol as a fuel is that if you happen to have a fire, the flames are very hard to see. It was enough to scare our management. We got rid of the Methanol and went to Fluorinert instead. Way more expensive but much safer. Barry I'm not certain, but methanol as a fuel would probably be nearly pure, and ingesting even a few ml could be enough to cause serious problems such as blindness. I don't think drinking a few ml of diesel fuel would be good for you, but probably would not cause you any long term problems either. Also methanol can be absorbed in toxic amounts through the skin, a problem for anyone who is used to using fuel as a general purpose cleaning fluid. No, not all that, but I DO keep my "gig line" straight, clothes neat and haircut period has been stretched slightly from 2 weeks to about 17/18 days, still neat but not extremely short and never "jarhead" type; in fact, I've never had one of those cuts. BTW, for anybody wondering what a "gig line" is; its that vertical line down the front of one's clothes formed by the RIGHT edges of the shirt buttoned strip down the front, belt buckle and the "fly" on a man's pants (that's LEFT edge as viewed by somebody else). You forget what I do for a living. I am not obsessive-compulsive. I can spot those folks a mile away -- over and over and over again. I am a retired military officer. With that comes a bit of neatness and order. The "Monk" in me comes from wanting to have everything tidy, in its place, and looking as it should look. Any window blind sitting at a 15 degree angle (yes, I am sitting on the deck with the laptop looking at that damn'd blind) is not as it should be. It God wanted things sitting at a 15 degree angle, he would not have allowed us to invent the bubble level. Drives my wife nuts, but I still fold clothes the same way as I was "taught" at USCG boot camp in 1975, Laugh if you want, but if you roll everything (especially jeans), they do NOT wrinkle. I wonder if Wilton lives in clutter? My guess is that his garage is as tidy as a B-52 cockpit (minus the disposed-of Styrofoam coffee cups). He might even have a before-bed checklist. Bed turned down -- check Bladder empty -- check Pillows fluffed -- check Eyeglasses within reach -- check (etc.) On Wed, Jun 3, 2009 at 4:29 PM, Bill R wrote: > Yes, probably you are correct. Re: [MBZ] OT Ford Focus
We have an '04 Focus, mostly trouble free so far at 110K miles. Had to charge the AC last week, and we did have one problem with the transmission, at right around 100K miles, it would not shift properly unless you disabled overdrive (pushbutton on the shifter). Turned out to be a stuck valve, the repair was not expensive and that was at the dealer. I had probably let the fluid go to long without changing. I think the current generation Focus is a new revision of the chassis, but I'd buy another one (used, most likely, though if you've got the money you can probably get a deal on a new one these days). Maybe get one with a manual trans if you like 'em. One other issue, the alloy wheels seem a little weak, prone to bending if you hit anything too hard. Re: [MBZ] our 190D starts to burn oil
Tyler's suggestions are very good. Diesels like to be driven hard - they like to be driven long distances and to be fully warmed up. Short trips at moderate/slow speeds are bad on diesels as well as gas engines as that kind of driving doesn't get the oil warmed enough to burn off any condensation that will naturally form in all engines. If it's not burned of it stays and mixes with the oil reducing the oils ability to lubricate. If it were me, I'd change the oil to the M1 5W40 mentioned and add the proper amount of Marvel Mystery Oil (a long time favorite of mine) to help free the rings. While it;s true the Mobil has its own additives, a little extra once in a while - especially on an older engine will help it along. Some will say the MMO is not needed - to each his own. When an engine gets old one of the inescapable problems will be hard starting in the winter - my 78 240D only used a quart of oil every 2000 mi or so - and it didn;t have visible smoke except at night when I revved it out and there were headlights behind me - then one cold day it would not start no matter what I did. Turned out to have almost zero compression on 3 of 4 cylinders. When I rebuilt it I found the 3 bad cylinders all had a broken top ring - the pistons and liners were all replaced. The point of the above is - the engine seemed fine until one day when it would no longer start - from OK to bad in 1 day/ It's possible Tyler is right about the rings being stuck - once they are loosened the oil burning may stop or be reduced. IMO your family is much safer in a older MB than a new Ford --- Good luck LarryT 78 240D 91 300D - Original Message - From: "tyler" To: "Mercedes Discussion List" Sent: Wednesday, June 03, 2009 1:59 PM Subject: Re: [MBZ] our 190D starts to burn oil You'd probably be better off with 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck than 15w50. There's a good chance that your oil burning is caused by stuck rings. I would try to run it hard as often as possible, and keep running Mobil 1 (hopefully 5w40). The carbon could clean out, and your compression return. If your crankcase breather is clogged, it can also cause the blowby gases to force out past the oil seals, and make the engine blow oil out on the ground. This could be the cause of your oil loss, and the blue smoke could be an injection system issue. I suppose it is possible for the engine to be just worn out also, with 300k miles! Tyler Zoltan Finks wrote: We changed to Mobil 1 15/50 oh, maybe two months and a couple thousand miles ago, maybe a bit less. We haven't been driving it very hard I think. My wife probably drives it moderately - pushes the pedal as hard as she needs to to get it up hills without falling behind. She accelerates with the normal flow of traffic. But nothing considered hard driving. Yes, the thing was running too cool since we got it. I changed the thermostat, oh, maybe 5 months and 3 - 4 thousand miles ago? Maybe less. I have to say this is a glimmer of hope. I tend to be fatalistic about our cars especially when they have 300k mi. on them. Not being that mechanically inclined, or at least experienced, I am just sick and tired of worrying about our cars. So at this point I am just throwing my hands up and saying let's get a newer reliable car and I will no longer be on worry patrol. We have been looking at Civics, and lusting after a new Insight. When we last had a two car [6 free-standing shelves plus a lot of boxes] garage It was a bit on the crowded side. When I was gone one weekend my kids came in and cleared it out almost completely, shelving units and all. I didn't miss most of it, though the edging attachment to my weed eater was a loss, and I rescued a few items from the trash. All in all I got over it - either that or it was the cause of my heart attack in 2004. No matter...I can always collect stuff, though I have a lot less of it these days. Re: [MBZ] our 190D starts to burn oil
You'd probably be better off with 5w40 Turbo Diesel Truck than 15w50. Re: [MBZ] our 190D starts to burn oil
Did you ever get the thermostat fixed? Carboned up rings would make this happen. How long did it take to get down 1.5 qts of oil? What kind of oil? How long using that oil? All those factors will come into play. If using a lighter M1 formulation (like 5w40) you might try a heavier weight like 15w50. You might try a conventional oil (Delvac 1300 15w40) too. -Curt Date: Tue, 2 Jun 2009 23:12:25 -0700 From: Zoltan Finks Subject: [MBZ] our 190D starts to burn oil To: Mercedes Discussion List Message-ID: <65200d420906022312p5938808dm9fbd0c54f972d...@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" I'm following the wife as she drives our 87 190D and I notice smoke out the tailpipe. Re: [MBZ] methanol........the fuel of the future from the past
"The energy carried by methanol is less than was needed to make it" This is the problem with almost all of these so-called "alternative" fuels, they are not energy sources but are only a storage medium for energy generated elsewhere, with the attendant losses dictated by the laws of thermodynamics. Though, they do say that the energy losses making methanol are less than electrolyzing water to make hydrogen. Methanol is also quite toxic, this issue was not mentioned at all that I saw.
