Max, when one of my SDLs had the dead bug problem I added a second clear
filter. I teed in a parallel second filter and pinched it shut with a
pair of padded vice grips. When the engine started to lose power, I
just released the vice grip and went on my way. Cleaned both filters at
my leisure and reinstalled. It took about 18 months for it clean itself
up.

A few years ago when I replaced all the clips/shims on my '87 300TD,

I had a semester of antenna design in college. What I learned was that
most successful designs were found by trial and error, and the theory to
explain why they worked generally followed. The math in that class was
too much for me, and I was happy to get a D (for degree!) and move on to
something more suited to my lack of higher math skills...

Some former science teacher in Maine designed this one from various
sources he says, posted it on instructables and Make highlighted it
(this is an outdoor one, the one you are thinking of is for indoors).
My antenna was a POS anyway, and it got whacked by a tree branch a
coupla weeks ago, so it went from bad to worse. I figured with a few
bucks worth of materials and junk I have laying around I could make a
couple (he ganged 2, I'm gonna try that too) and see if they did any
good out here in the woods.

The hardware cloth is a reflector, and bending the fingers forward
apparently lines them up with the angled reflector. I think antennas
are all magic anyway, but I'll give it a try. When I get the other one
sorted out I'll put them on the roof and see what happens.

Rich,

Every fall I treat my tank with diesel version of Heat to get rid of the
condensate from the summer months, and if I notice any black particles
in the clear filter I also treat with biocide. This latest episode is
the first time for me, and I think it's because the car sat with very
little use for about a year.

I guess its off to the boat store manana to get some biocide.
Interesting too, it got cool the last coupla weeks, I am wondering if
that made a lot of condensate that both Max and I (living in the same
general area) had develop in the tank, making it a happy home for algae.

I was thinking that gritty part might be rust, and thinking what it
would do to injection pumps and injectors and cylinder walls

You'll probably need to clean out the tank too. I'm guessing the grit may
be rust from inside your tank (or if you're lucky the station's tank). I
got a bad load of diesel in my 126 300SD a few years back and had similar
problems. The in-tank screen filter would gradually clog while driving and
I'd lose power. After draining the fuel tank I washed it with a pressure
washer shooting through the gage hole while the water and crud drained
through the filter hole below. Then I dried it for a couple days using a
shop vac on blow. But the once-shiny inside of the tank was dark and I
suspect that was partly rust from the water. I also had to disassemble and
clean the fuel gage (be very careful here) to get the gook off the wire and
sliding contacts. All has been fine ever since so I'm keeping fingers
crossed and I add biocide at every fillup.

Review which speaks to microbial growth (fungi and bacteria) in diesel
fuel. Marshall Booth was fond of quoting from this, and the latest
version may be available on Chevron's website somewhere. I had a tough
time finding this in 2007, haven't tried to look for a newer version
since. Entire document is over 2 MB, let me know if you'd like a copy
and I'll send off list.

Also attached is MB's Sheet 119, which explains MB's recommendations on
use of fuel additives. This lines up exactly with what Marshall always
said about additives (which I remember as "Don't use them unless
treating a specific problem like water or microbial growth or gum
deposits, then stop using as soon as problem is resolved").

Its gotta be sustained temps over 80 for the algae to grow. Even if the
cooler weather cause water condensate in the tank, it wouldn't grow,
unless cooler means sustained temps over 80.

bottom of each email, all you have to do is click on the link to

change the file extension to the appropriate format, such as .pdf or
whatever. Sometimes it changes the file extension.

replaced OVP in 87 300D a few min. ago. Battery out, easily unplugged old
one, plugged in new one, battery back in; overall 'bout 5 minutes. Prob.

The fuse on top, too. Only thing in most of 'em is a big zener

[MBZ] SUNROOF DIED, CAME BACK TO LIFE

2009-11-16 Thread Dillon, Meade M CIV SPAWARSYSCEN-ATLANTIC, 53310
Sunday I opened the sunroof to enjoy the beautiful weather here, and
then while closing it stopped about 1/4 of the way closed. Fuse was
fine, new fuse did not help, clicking noises from the motor/relay area
but no motion. Discovered the manual closing knob/bolt/thing-a-ma-bob
had been all buggered up by a PO so couldn't use that method. Neighbor
came over to help when I asked to borrow his 6mm box wrench, which fits
on the flats of the shaft left exposed with the thing-a-ma-bob wreckage
was removed. While I worked the sunroof switch he gave it a little help
with the wrench, and the motor came back to life allowing me to close
the sunroof.

So, time for a new motor/relay assembly? How much pain is caused by
replacing that assembly? Anything else I should do 'while I'm there'?

I think that whole setup is quite pricey to replace. Might be worth
taking it out, cleaning and lubing, then see if it works better.

Neighbor

came over to help when I asked to borrow his 6mm box wrench, which

fits

on the flats of the shaft left exposed with the thing-a-ma-bob

wreckage

was removed. While I worked the sunroof switch he gave it a little

help

with the wrench, and the motor came back to life allowing me to close
the sunroof.

So, time for a new motor/relay assembly? How much pain is caused by
replacing that assembly? Anything else I should do 'while I'm there'?

That's why I like the manual SR on my 300TD wagon - it's relatively
uncomplicated but does need to be maintained.

Re: [MBZ] SUNROOF DIED, CAME BACK TO LIFE

2009-11-16 Thread Mitch Haley

When my 300SD started acting up, I just grabbed it with one hand and pushed it
forward to help the motor get it closed.
As long as the cable assembly doesn't come apart on you and you don't have a
popup roof it's just a matter of keeping the rails clean and lubed with the
special sunroof paste.
(your '87 might be popup and your '95 surely is, those things can fail in
expensive ways, the safest thing to do is not raise the rear of the sunroof)

Mitch.

Which is what I've done on my 240D until such time as I get rid of the car or
install manual sunroof bits. The tube for the cable is buggered on mine and the
motor can't push hard enough even after lubricating the sunroof to close it
without bending the motor mount (!).

Re: [MBZ] guess Im going to have to pull the 140 engine

2009-11-16 Thread LarryT

Hi Kaleb --
If you decide to pull the engine, make sure you put a piece of wood
across the torque conv. so it cannot come off the AT. It's tricky to fully
insert the TC shaft fully into the AT primary pump. IIRC the procedure is
to put it against the prim pump, then turn the TC 1/4 turn and it will go
into the prim pump another little bit, then turn another 1/4 turn and it
will go into the PP even farther. I think that's all the way in. If it's
not inserted properly, and you are sure, start over - it will damage the TC
and destroy the PP if not connected properly. BTDT with my 1st MB years
ago.

Good luck!

So I messed with the 140 SD a little today, I unbolted the motor mounts,
and raised the engine up as far as I could, I just dont see anyway of
getting the oil pan off to replace that rod without either removing the
engine, or dropping the complete front suspension/subframe out. Guess I
will just pull the motor since its already about half way out anyway.
Damn, I really did not want to do that. Im about half leaning toward just
putting the head back on and calling it quits and see how long it goes.
Who knows, it could last a long time with that questionable #1 rod. I
dont know, I guess if I pull it out I might as well just see if that other
wierd 603 I have is any good and drop it in, or replace that rod on the
current engine and put the head back on while its out of the car.

Unlikely that somebody else is gonna use either of my cars, 'cept SWMBO, and

What happens if someone else uses your car and opens it and it jams open
because of dis-use and lack of lubrication? For that reason I try to
keep all the features in good operating condition on my cars.

I don't ever open either of mine. Frankly, I think it's bad engineering
to have a perfectly good steel top, then cut a hole in it and install
and unreliable mechanism which may leave the roof open for weather
entry/damage, and then charge "customer" an insane amount for the
"privilege" of having a

Sunday I opened the sunroof to enjoy the beautiful weather here, and
then while closing it stopped about 1/4 of the way closed. Fuse was
fine, new fuse did not help, clicking noises from the motor/relay area
but no motion. Discovered the manual closing knob/bolt/thing-a-ma-bob
had been all buggered up by a PO so couldn't use that method.

Neighbor

came over to help when I asked to borrow his 6mm box wrench, which

fits

on the flats of the shaft left exposed with the thing-a-ma-bob

wreckage

was removed. While I worked the sunroof switch he gave it a little

help

with the wrench, and the motor came back to life allowing me to close
the sunroof.

So, time for a new motor/relay assembly? How much pain is caused by
replacing that assembly? Anything else I should do 'while I'm there'?

Re: [MBZ] free circuits

I think the basis of these antennas is very broadband reception. Varying the
distances from the elements to the reflector helps it "tune" across a wider
frequency range (as does the V shape of the elements).
The above is another examle of theory following design!

[MBZ] Craigslist morons

2009-11-16 Thread Alex Chamberlain
I just emailed a CL seller to ask about a car. The ad contained only
blurry exterior photos. I wrote something like "The car looks pretty
straight from what I can see---has it ever been in an accident? How
is the paint? What is the condition of the interior? Maybe you have
some larger pictures that would give me a better idea of the car, so I
could decide whether to come and take a look at it?"

The seller's response in its entirety: "The interior is good. I don't
have any other photos!"

How do these people remember to keep breathing, let alone sell cars?

Your best hope is that there is a old man with a heavy german accent on the
other end of that email. I've had good luck more than once when buying a
car where the original ad was quite weak. This is how I bought my '79

much for computers!

Get him on the phone... you'll know in about 10 seconds if you're on the

Watch out for those zebra-fish- they're really aggressive. I never had any
luck keeping them together with Angelfish, as the zebras would eat the
angelfish fins to the point that they would die from stress. Maybe you'll

them give some advance warning with an opportunity to head off the trouble or
whatever. Steel sunroofs were standard for so many years, no, decades that
the technology is mature. All of my past MBs have been so equipped although I
can't recall if the 250 had one. MB started charging for them when they
switched over to glass tilt or slide panels but now the cost is buried in the
base price. Their extra cost roof now is the Panorama roof with glass panels
front and back. The front one rises and sits atop the roof which I didn't
bite on for several reasons. Not just the $1K option price but the possible
wind noise and alll the dirt collecting corners when it's open. Plus the extra
weight up high where it's not wanted. I run it tilted open almost always in
good weather.

[MBZ] Anybody, anywhere, believe this?

2009-11-16 Thread RELNGSON
Reminds me of a few other government claims lately...

DOE Moving On BioFuel

The DOE intends to develop biofuels that can act as drop in replacements
for diesel and gasoline and believes that domestic sources -- including both
cellulosic ethanol and algae-based fuels -- can match almost 100 percent of
the U.S. demand. Biomass Magazine has reported that the agency has solicited
$50 million for algal biofuel development through the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act of 2009. The goal is to apply the monies to develop a
consortium of research and development teams that will aggregate all the
experts
and apply their work to key targets. Currently, the DOE hopes to accelerate
the development of hydrocarbon-based biofuels, targeting a pilot scale
rollout at the end of five years. DOE hopes algae-based fuels could hope to be
at
the same stage within about ten years if funds are released to allow
development of a consortia-based research program. Algae's potential
productivity
far outpaces that of land-based crop productivity (corn), but hurdles remain
and the DOE has set deadlines.

For algae to become a fuel source, algal cultivation and biology must be
analyzed both economically and technologically. Proposals that detail plans
for moving from research to development are sitting with the DOE, which plans
to announce its decisions by year-end.

So looking at the fuel tank diagram, it appears that the filter is at
the bottom of the tank, as are the hose connections. That makes sense I
guess. So it appears that I need to drain the tank, remove it, and then
do whatever to check if it is full of crap, change the filter, etc. It
is not accessible from the bottom, under the car (though I guess I would
need to drain the tank, which is half full, anyway)?

For a very long range heavy military bomber, add lots more noise, very
uncomfortable seat, wear heavy parachute and straps, oxygen mask, heating

We have a cockpit mock-up in our house. When I mention to my wife that I
miss flying by being retired she puts me in the mock-up around bed time
for

8 hours. She has a chair in a closet, switches on the vacuum cleaner to
simulate cockpit air noise, has a dim nite-lite to simulate cockpit
lighting,

serves luke-warm chicken with cold vegetables on a tray. When I get sleepy
and attempt to doze off, she knocks twice loudly on the door to simulate
the F/As entering the cockpit.

Then after 6 hours she turns on a flood light directly in front of me to
simulate the sun coming up when approaching 20 west. I then get a cup of
coffee that has been in the coffee maker all night. Finally she lets me
out
and I have to get in the back seat of her car while she runs morning
errands

to simulate the bus ride to the hotel.

When we get home I tell her I am ready for bed and the bedroom door is
locked for an hour to simulate the hotel rooms not being ready. When I
promise to never "complain" about being retired, I am allowed to enjoy my
"layover" and go to bed. Oh, and one more thing, she talks to her friends
loudly
outside the bedroom door to simulate the hotel maids chattering in the
hall

in their native language.

After two hours of sleep she calls the phone next to the bed from her
cell and says "this is crew scheduling and we have a reroute for you. Do
you

have something to write with?"

 No, I guess I don't miss it after all . . .

The W123 screen is barely accessible from underneath - the half shaft
is directly in the way.
I might suggest you price a new screen as the W123 screen was not many
dollars and kept the job a bit easy. It needs a 42mm socket - but
then the half shaft was in the way - so we used an impact chisel to
drive it loose. Don't underestimate the amount of fuel that will be
behind that clogged screen - the screen could seep for months before
you might decide to drive it out from the tank and you still might get
soaked in fuel. Perhaps pressurize the tank from the fill tube to
drive fuel thru the clogged screen?

Yes water but not good water. It likes salty water and CO2 and hot sun,
which is what you find in places that are not nice to live in (viz.
Indian reservations out west) and where it comes from underground when
oil and gas are tapped. So you have lots of land, lots of nice salty
dirty water and CO2, lots of sun, other energy extraction, and people
who would benefit from some industry. And from what I have read it
could probably be produced more efficiently and cheaper than ethanol
from foodstocks.

Don't take such a narrow view, its not YOU living on this water is algae,
similar to the stuff that lives in a diesel fuel tank. I'm given to understand
the real hot shot way to do it is to use salt water and then pump in the
emissions of a coal fired power plant. The algae thrive on the CO2 and whatnot,
scrub the air clean and become bio-fuel...

It's the DOE's job to find out what recently became outdated and subsidize it so
that the new advance can't replace it. If only we had the DOE in Edison's day,

Another endorsement of big government - NOT!! - Great point.

Somehow we all get stuck in old ways and want to continue, instead of
advance and innovate in to new means of life. Suburbia is not the
be-all end-all of life in america today. Yet, with our dependence on
fossil/algae fuels being coddled, we won't need to change any way of
doing things for another millenia - thanks to DOE. Oh, wait - in
another millenia, there won't be any more land to support sprawl.

I think a reasonable objective for the young guys today is to have the
experienced guys hand them the reigns and let them rule. Bill Gates
was probably 25 when he became a billionaire and ruled the world by
peecee. The same should be done today at every level of manufacturing
and industry - then we might begin to see some innovation and abandon
old ways that are untenable. I really want buggy whips back in
production - they are so...

No, the screen comes out form the bottom. You run the tank empty as you
can, then have jerrycans/jugs ready to catch whatever is left. cut the
hose, and stuff the tank end into the funnel/can and let it drain.

You won't need a new screen in all likelihood. Some recommend cutting
off the screen and adding a larger prefilter screen under the hood. it
is much easier to clean than crawling under and getting a bath.

DO PLAN to replace the hose from the tank to the steel line. you can
buy a new one with the fitting, or if you are a typical frugal Dieseler,
cut the ferrule off the old hose, salvage the threaded fitting, and
replace with a chunk of hose and two clamps. ALSO replace the hose
chunk for the return line. Clamp them tight. You don't want air
leaking into the system.

Once the tank is drained. you remove the hose from the screen. Next
there is a rubber seal to remove. Then the hex of the screen s visible.
It is an inch and 5/8 if I remember right. Someone said 42 mm. you
can use a socket, or the really big chanellocks or a hammer and chisel
to turn it out. Once it is loose, it should screw out by hand.

Compressed air is handy to clean the screen, if you elect to keep it. I
have never been so crass as to cut the screen out. I have used a chisel
to turn the large hex. I now own a socket to do the job.

If you don't buy the official hose with the threaded fitting, the upper
clamp can sometimes interfere with the rubber plug. I've always managed
to make it work anyway.

Not sure I would want to be blasting water into the tank from inside the
car. It looks like it might not be all that hard to get the tank out,
once I get the fuel out, just a PITA to have to do it.

Anyway, I think he concluded that the easiest way would be to leave

from the top, and blast the heck out of the tank with a pressure washer.

Since Kaleb has changed the list to the old way of handling attachments,
go ahead and sent it to the list. We can download it with the link that

No, the screen comes out form the bottom. You run the tank empty as
you can, then have jerrycans/jugs ready to catch whatever is left.
cut the hose, and stuff the tank end into the funnel/can and let it
drain.

You won't need a new screen in all likelihood. Some recommend cutting
off the screen and adding a larger prefilter screen under the hood.
it is much easier to clean than crawling under and getting a bath.

DO PLAN to replace the hose from the tank to the steel line. you can
buy a new one with the fitting, or if you are a typical frugal
Dieseler, cut the ferrule off the old hose, salvage the threaded
fitting, and replace with a chunk of hose and two clamps. ALSO
replace the hose chunk for the return line. Clamp them tight. You
don't want air leaking into the system.

Once the tank is drained. you remove the hose from the screen. Next
there is a rubber seal to remove. Then the hex of the screen s
visible. It is an inch and 5/8 if I remember right. Someone said 42
mm. you can use a socket, or the really big chanellocks or a hammer
and chisel to turn it out. Once it is loose, it should screw out by
hand.

Compressed air is handy to clean the screen, if you elect to keep it.
I have never been so crass as to cut the screen out. I have used a
chisel to turn the large hex. I now own a socket to do the job.

If you don't buy the official hose with the threaded fitting, the
upper clamp can sometimes interfere with the rubber plug. I've always
managed to make it work anyway.

2009-11-16 Thread Dieselhead
I really think you are being a bit obsessive/compulsive. If you drain
the tank via the screen/drain hole, the algae will come out. Most of it
anyay. Most of the rust/dirt will come out too. what little left
behind shouldn't be of much consequence. If you want to absess, then
take the fuel, filter out the algae and dump it in the filler and let it
wash out the tank. Better than all that messing around with the sender
and taking out the tank. that is not an easy job. You still have to
crawl under and drain the tank first to remove the hoses.

In any case, you should add biocide when you refill the tank.

Not I. It keeps the chunks and sand out of the fuel line, where
it could get impacted. Then what would you do?

So, time for a new motor/relay assembly?

The problem is rarely that, as I understand it. Sticky
cables and sliders, that's what happens. CLA is called for,
but that takes some doing.
