Re: [MBZ] I buy a new AC machine, now have AC problems
I tend to test by putting in just enough to engage the pressure switch. On my 85 that was a good idea since I quickly noticed the high side was too high and the low side was ... low. I observed foam in the sight glass (the color of the oil!) and that the line going into the side of the accumulator was much hotter (30 degrees) than the one at the top. I have a new one going in tomorrow. -- John W Reames jwrea...@comcast.net Home: +14106646986 Mobile: +14437915905 On Jul 18, 2010, at 22:33, "Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] [Daveslist] where to buy R12
Over the past 5-7 years, R12 has come down in price quite a bit. This is because more and more R12 cars are off the road and/or have been converted to R-134a, which has lessened the demand for R12. It is certainly still available. Perhaps you could have an indy shop get you a supply. You have to be certified to handle it, as you probably know, but this can be done on-line for a nominal fee. R12 is still made in Mexico and there are large stockpiles of it here in the US, as well as reclaimed R12. I would think that any refrigeration or automotive supply business (or perhaps an indy mechanic shop) would sell it to you if you had proof of certification. If you had a friend in Mexico, you could get cans of itthey are available there in auto parts stores just like 134a is here in the States!! Cheers, Gerry On Jul 18, 2010, at 3:46 PM, Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] 1998 C220 for sale for $500
OK lets say the DOUBLE ROW timing CHAIN broke and sent the valves (there are 4 per cylinder) into the pistons, at the very least you are going to have at least 4 valves bent, depending on the engine speed at the time of the breakage. Worst case scenario is that the camshafts are damaged, which means the best option is a reconditioned head, plus there may be damage from the chain. If it was me, I would ask the seller if I could remove the rocker cover, you may find that the chain did not break but the tensioner or guide rail broke, allowing the chain to skip, which is a better scenario. Another problem is that you do not know the condition of the gearbox, A/C and other bits and pieces, the condition which of, you can only tell by having a car that can be driven. Remember if the seller was happy to drive around with a cracked wind screen and turn signal, they may well have no car pride. Is there any service history? Have a look at Rustys site for some idea on the cost of parts, it does not show a C220 for 98 but the C230 is pretty much the same. http://www.buymbparts.biz/ According to http://www.germanstar.net/Mercedes_Model_Info.html the C220 was dropped in 96, so be sure you figure out what you intent to buy, a grey market import is not going to be worth as much as a US delivered one. It is always a good idea, when looking at a Benz and thinking about buying it, to get the VIN. Far as making money out of it, if you can do the work yourself and get a good price on parts, then you may make a profit but if you have to get someone to fix the engine, then you may well end up losing money. I would guess that getting that engine repaired would cost between 1K to 2K depending on the damage. Have a look at what comparable cars are going for on ebay and in the classifieds, remembering that the asking price may not be the final selling price. The price of the W202 is dropping and over here (where Mercs are more expensive all round) we are starting to see the base models (C180's) heading close to 5K in reasonable condition. However we where not as hard hit with that financial thingy, so prices of cars have not dropped that much. Hendrik Kathmandu wrote: There was an add in the local trading post for a 1998 C220 for $500. The lady who posted the add first thought it was a BMW then said it was a 320E so you can get some idea of whom I am dealing with. She said the C220 had a broken timing belt and didn't run. She said and I quote, "it bent the points and spark plugs and doesn't run" I looked at the car and the body is straight and the interior is not ripped up or anything but it does have a cracked windshield and a broken turn signal lens. Question is, if it did break the timing belt, what sort of damage would likely have occurred and second would this car be worth anything if it were running? Re: [MBZ] I buy a new AC machine, now have AC problems
when I rebuilt it last year, I replaced the compressor with a new (not rebuilt) r4, replaced rear expansion valve, replaced orifice tube in the front (I dont recall it being pluggd up). I also flushed everything while it was torn apart. I removed the radiator as well to clean out the crap between it and the condenser. I am recovering the refrigerant now and will put in on a vacuum for an hour, then recharge it. See post just a minute ago. It did run now, but acts like its overcharged or something. Peter Frederick wrote: Did you flush the condenser and is it clear of debris between the radiator and condenser? Sounds like what my TE does -- high side is too high and cooling is inadequate with high pressure, and I'm quite certain the plugged up condenser is the problem. If it's too hot from no air flow, the freon will not condense properly, so you have both excessive pressure and lousy cooling from hot gas instead of liquid at the orifice tube in front. If the expansion valve is working correctly, it will be wide open, too, and again you get high low side pressure from gas expansion rather than liquid boiling -- somewhat less cooling capacity. You must also evacuate for at least 45 min to remove air and water, particularly water, from the system -- R134a oils hold much more water than R12 oils, and it takes some time for them to evaporate and migrate out via the vacuum pump. I found that flushing the condenser alone made a huge difference -- if the system was ever R12, all the mineral oil will tend to collect in the condenser, coating the inside and greatly reducing heat transfer. Also, was the orifice tube clogged? If it was, did you put a filter in the low side hose, and if so, have you replaced it? Slop in there will also cause high side excessive pressure, and if the filter is between the fitting and the compressor, you can have a vacuum between the filter and the compressor and high pressure "upstream" of the filter! well I just messed with it again and the pressure had equalized, so I started it up and the compressor ran, although high side was close to 400, low side about 70. Seems like its overcharged to me. When you rev it up, compressor kicks out because high side pressure gets too high. I am evacuating again and redoing it. Mitch Haley wrote: There's always the possibility you have too much R12 in it. Re: [MBZ] 1999 e300 rear end noise
Do a visual check of the rubber in the driveline (flex disks, boots, dif mounts, ete) and replace any that show signs of serious age. You can check the drive axle half by jacking it up and holding the shaft while attempting to rotate the wheel. A bad outer joint will have distinct play and "clank" when you do this, just like a bad front CV joint. It's unusual for a joint to fail with an intact boot, but not unheard of -- these are fairly flow flex joints, unlike those on front wheel drive cars. I do think you are on the right track, though, as whatever is making the noise pretty much has to be rotating. Re: [MBZ] I buy a new AC machine, now have AC problems
Did you flush the condenser and is it clear of debris between the radiator and condenser? For whom? Based on what I found on Car-part.com its ~$200 too low. They had a bunch of 250,000 mile engines for ~$800. [MBZ] 1998 C220 for sale for $500
There was an add in the local trading post for a 1998 C220 for $500. I am totally uninterested in this dinky Mercedes myself but I am interested if I could make a few bucks fixing and selling it or even parting it out. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Re: [MBZ] I buy a new AC machine, now have AC problems
If the back exp valve stuck I could see it causing the back unit to not work, but I cant see it causing this problem. I think either I got something plugging up with orifice tube in the front, or maybe something is plugged up in the accumulator? Could a valve or something in the compressor sticking open or closed cause this? As it said, it worked just fine before I evacuated and recharged. I hook the machine up and recover the refrigerant, it recovers about 2.9 lbs. System holds 4.25. After I recover, I pull a vacuum and it pulls fine down to 30" pretty quick. I pull the vacuum for about 5 minutes and let it sit for about 15 or so to see if it loses any vacuum. I then set the machine to charge in 4.25 lbs, which it does just fine. [MBZ] 1999 e300 rear end noise
It can be reproduced more easily after running a few miles. The best way to reproduce it is to accelerate (in drive) and then take your foot completely off the pedal. On the highway, when the car slows sufficiently to downshift into 4th, a speed dependent rattle can be heard. If this is done in "4", so the car cannot downshift, the noise is not heard. At about 65-70, the rattling is more like a vibration. I haven't tried forcing the car to not downshift at slower speeds, but the timing is approximately the same. At slower speeds, the noise is a more distinct rattling noise, almost like an exhaust pipe against a frame rail, except on the passenger side. (i have tweaked the exhaust alignment to create more space between the rail and muffler, and the noise remains unchanged). I am suspecting a cv joint at this time, so I crawled under the car and used a non-contact thermometer to "shoot" the joints from about 1.5" away. I used the same positioning and distance on all of the joints. For the inner joints, I measured at the metal where the inner end of the boot attaches. Both sides were approximately 125 degrees, and were within 2-3 degrees of each other. For the outer joints, the passenger side was about 15-20 degrees hotter than the driver side (120 driver, 135 passenger). The diff was 150 degrees. Any thoughts/next steps? Re: [MBZ] Tightening Nets on the Back of Front Seats of 83 300SD
It should. You have to pull the seat back off to get at the net. As he mentioned, the plastic frame that holds the netting will be really brittle from age, and will probably break into multiple pieces when you try to remove it. Just go slow and do your best to preserve as much of it as possible. You can replace the elastic with stock elastic you can find in just about any fabric store. Re: [MBZ] OT poodles
Our old Golden Dexter, who is on his second 240D, can tell that from the OM 602. He's pretty deaf now but still gets up when the 240D turns the corner. Used to be down the street he'd hear it. He loves the back seat of a 123-his nose just fits on the door handle incline part. Dwight E. Giles, Jr. 1978 240D 4 speed. 218K + miles. 1990 300D 2.5t 170K miles. I'm assuming your '83 126 is similar to my '81. The problem is that the elastic is gone from the top horizontal part of the net. It is fairly easy to replace but on my car it had seen many years of direct sunlight and a lot of the plastic parts have become very brittle. With this in mind, you have to remove the back from the seat that needs to have the net repaired. You do that by removing the 2 screws at the base of the seat back and pulling down on the seat back till it comes free. You should now have access to the screws that hold the framework for the net in place. This is where I had a bit of a problem as by the time I had removed the screws from the brackets on my seatback the frames for the nets had cracked. I was able to epoxy them back together but try to be as careful as you can when you remove the screws. I was able to find a very good match for the elastic material at a local REI store, a camping/sporting goods store. I found the elastic material for a couple of bucks or so in the rock climbing equipment section with the climbing ropes and such. A quick search showed the closest REI to you to be in Georgia, a bit of a trek for some stretch material but I'm guessing you may find a similar type store nearer to you. You might even try at a sewing and yardage store. Replacement from this point is fairly obvious. My nets are still nice and tight and that was about 4 years ago. Yeah well, it is a thing that people do, buy 'commercial vehicles' and treat them like super cars. Re: [MBZ] Tightening Nets on the Back of Front Seats of 83 300SD
Tom - You very well may find it in the archives. I just took a quick look at the EPC to see if the net is available as a separate part. It appears that it comes with the plastic frame and the part number is 126 810 02 49. I'm sure Rusty can give you a price. Barry > I am assuming that the instructions for tightening up the nets on the > back > of a front seat should be somewhat generic.
