Not being critical, just making the observation I could live with it myself.

I don't think there were any defective chains in 1987 models, so you should be
OK for quite some time. If you set the crank to top dead center (always going
clockwise, roll it over again if you go too far), you can remove the valve cover
and see if the timing marks line up on the cam. If the cam timing is retarded,
roll the engine forward slowly until the cam is at TDC, and then read the chain
stretch on the timing marks at the crank. If it hasn't stretched 3-4 degrees
yet, don't worry about it.

They not only took the time to locate it and email me pictures to verify the

If the oil changes haven't been overextended, it's unlikely IMO that the
chain would be in need of replacement at only 150K miles. Use of a
diesel-rated synthetic such as M1 Turbo Diesel Truck a/k/a Delvac-1
should reduce chain wear/stretch to nearly negligible. Check it as
Mitch described if you want to put your mind at ease.

The rough starts could be due to a bad glow plug or two... is your dash
glow lamp working properly? This will only get worse as the fall/winter
arrives and temps start to drop.

Too late, sounds like your engine is already ruined. I'll give you $750 for it.

No? Ok, you need to replace some bad glow plugs, and pull the valve cover to
check the amount of chain stretch. When it reaches 5 degrees, replace the
chain. If the oil has been changed according to schedule, expect about 1 or 2
degrees of wear for every 100k miles.

Re: [MBZ] W124 front seats for a change

2011-08-09 Thread Dan Penoff
An MB is considered a high line car when you speak with brokers. They are
lumped in with Porsches, BMWs, etc.

I say this because I bought a 1991 300E at Mannheim in 1996, and this was one
of the things my broker pointed out. Silver exterior, maroon interior, probably
worth 20% less than a comparable model with a more mainstream color scheme.

Hence the reason for using a broker. This sort of knowledge has great value

My high line car broker buddy always told me that the combination of silver

Not being critical, just making the observation I could live with it

Geez, you are going to drive up the price of old MB's. You should be
offering $400.

It used to be $500 but with the state of the US economy, it will likely
be down to $250 shortly so if you offered $400 he would likely jump at it!

No? Ok, you need to replace some bad glow plugs, and pull the valve cover to
check the amount of chain stretch. When it reaches 5 degrees, replace the
chain. If the oil has been changed according to schedule, expect about 1 or 2
degrees of wear for every 100k miles.

I have some experience with that program. About 12 years ago our local
transit system converted several buses to LNG [Liquified Natural Gas] to
join the clean is green movement. The engines ran OK, delivery and fill
systems worked fine, however, power and mileage lost the match. Total BTU
of LNG vs Diesel equation vs costs to convert, store, fill, and deal with
the whole mess only worked because it was done on a government paid money
is no object program. As soon as the special money ran out back to
diesel.

Cant imagine how that would work in todays economy for an individual with
one or two vehicles, dependent upon the one LNG filling station within 100
miles of home.

Re: [MBZ] conversion of diesel-fueled engines to natural gas.

2011-08-09 Thread Dan Penoff
Diesels have been modified to run on NG for some time in the transmission line
and drilling industry. This is mainly due to cheap and readily available gas
supplies at the point of origin.

Keep in mind that the decreased power output was offset by oversizing the prime
mover, with the resulting costs being justified through the minimal expense of
the fuel source.

Not an ideal arrangement, but taking into consideration the situation, it makes
good sense from a cost/benefits standpoint.

I'm not sure there are any clear-cut ones. As I recall Marshall said
the engines would run apparently fine with significant chain stretch.

The proactive thing to do is check the stretch when you do valve
adjustments.

I don't think there were any defective chains in 1987 models, so you should
be OK for quite some time. If you set the crank to top dead center (always
going clockwise, roll it over again if you go too far), you can remove the
valve cover and see if the timing marks line up on the cam. If the cam
timing is retarded, roll the engine forward slowly until the cam is at TDC,
and then read the chain stretch on the timing marks at the crank. If it
hasn't stretched 3-4 degrees yet, don't worry about it.

 Mitch.

I was assuming the control box was the evil Chrylser ACC. But you are
right, it could be any number of other problems ranging from fairly
cheap/easy to rather expensive.

In Indiana, summers are pretty uncomfortable without working AC. One
has to assume that if a car is being sold with non-working AC, the
problem was judged more costly to fix than the car is worth, or is
indicative of overall neglect.

I have about 150K miles on my 87 300SDL and am wondering at what mileage, I
should be planning on changing the timing chain. It is running well, except
for first starts when I get a rough running for about 8 sec. with blue smoke
accompanying the rough running. Smooths out quickly and runs fine.

So did I - I had to replace it, bought one somewhere on-line on sale for
around $275 (BenzBin?) - this was before I'd discovered Rusty. It worked
fine for the next six years or so that I drove the car. The trick is
supposed to be to run AC EVERY month, and to religiously replace the collant
with the MB stuff every two years, which is what I did after replacing one
unit.
