I don't think there were any defective chains in 1987 models, so you should be OK for quite some time. If you set the crank to top dead center (always going clockwise, roll it over again if you go too far), you can remove the valve cover and see if the timing marks line up on the cam. If the cam timing is retarded, roll the engine forward slowly until the cam is at TDC, and then read the chain stretch on the timing marks at the crank. If it hasn't stretched 3-4 degrees yet, don't worry about it. If the oil changes haven't been overextended, it's unlikely IMO that the chain would be in need of replacement at only 150K miles. Use of a diesel-rated synthetic such as M1 Turbo Diesel Truck a/k/a Delvac-1 should reduce chain wear/stretch to nearly negligible. Check it as Mitch described if you want to put your mind at ease. Re: [MBZ] 300 sdl timing chain,
Too late, sounds like your engine is already ruined. I'll give you $750 for it. No? Ok, you need to replace some bad glow plugs, and pull the valve cover to check the amount of chain stretch. When it reaches 5 degrees, replace the chain. If the oil has been changed according to schedule, expect about 1 or 2 degrees of wear for every 100k miles. Re: [MBZ] W124 front seats for a change
An MB is considered a high line car when you speak with brokers. They are lumped in with Porsches, BMWs, etc. I say this because I bought a 1991 300E at Mannheim in 1996, and this was one of the things my broker pointed out. Silver exterior, maroon interior, probably worth 20% less than a comparable model with a more mainstream color scheme. Hence the reason for using a broker. Geez, you are going to drive up the price of old MB's. You should be offering $400. Re: [MBZ] conversion of diesel-fueled engines to natural gas.
Diesels have been modified to run on NG for some time in the transmission line and drilling industry. This is mainly due to cheap and readily available gas supplies at the point of origin. Keep in mind that the decreased power output was offset by oversizing the prime mover, with the resulting costs being justified through the minimal expense of the fuel source. Not an ideal arrangement, but taking into consideration the situation, it makes good sense from a cost/benefits standpoint. Correct me if I am wrong, but I was of the opinion that there wasn't any valve adjustments required for the 603 engine, which is my 300SDL, but would be required on the 617, which is in my '84 300CD. It is running well, except for first starts when I get a rough running for about 8 sec. with blue smoke accompanying the rough running. Smooths out quickly and runs fine. The rough starts could be due to a bad glow plug or two... is your dash glow lamp working properly? This will only get worse as the fall/winter arrives and temps start to drop. Re: [MBZ] 450 SLC
So did I - I had to replace it, bought one somewhere on-line on sale for around $275 (BenzBin?) - this was before I'd discovered Rusty. It worked fine for the next six years or so that I drove the car. The trick is supposed to be to run AC EVERY month, and to religiously replace the collant with the MB stuff every two years, which is what I did after replacing one unit.
