seller is a criminal. Well, more a profiteer. There is a feedstock
variability, but if he is going through his tanks that quickly, he should
invest in another location to feed the demand.

Around PNW, the price fluctuates depending on cost of processing. Sometimes #2
is a bit less, sometimes BioD is competitive. Price stays fairly stable unless
there is a large disruption in petro pricing. We still get the penny per
percent reduction, so B99 comes out the pump having been subsidized almost a
dollar.

BioD seller is also home heating provider, so tanks are always getting
serviced. I figure if the price stays stabile for a month or more, supply must
be high, since it is the #2 that bounces around more than soy fuel.

Fluid and filters need to be changed. No use running fresh fluid through a
nasty filter Fresh standard ATF will help flush gunk out. Not as good as
synth, but a short shot of synth will allow you to change to longer periods.

I always thought it was a great car. The 300SE coupe with the
rounded off fins is even more beautiful, and to me one of the all
time best looking cars, with the 300SL and the long body 126. A
friend of mine had a 300SE sedan (112) and had the money to take care

I contacted the daughter of the (deceased) former owner of my 1962
300SE, and it was a real treat. She had lots of fond memories of
her dad and the car, and was excited to know that it was being cared
for by someone who appreciated what it was. She also gave me a lot
of insight into how it was cared for in the 30 or so years that he
owned it. I still get Christmas cards from her.

I would do it. I don't think it's creepy at all. And really -
what's the worst thing that could happen? They think you're a psycho
and they blow you off. Nothing lost.

And buy new hoses. When you replace them, cut the old ones in half
and look at how swollen they are inside. You'll be amazed, I
promise.

And that is WHY you NEVER put DOT3 brake fluid in your MB. It turns
the brake hoses into check valves, leading to burned up brake parts.

faculty at Berkeley. He owned it up to his death sometime in the mid 1990s.
He died intestate (without a will) and while his estate was being sorted out
the car was stored in a warehouse in Colma, CA, also known as the "City of the
Dead". Google it - I used to work right next to Colma in South San Francisco.

Anyway, Joe Knight from the R/E list spotted it in a Craigslist add and pointed
it out to me, as I had put the word out that I was looking for a finnie. He
drove across the Bay and took a look at it. Get this - all of the glass, with
the exception of the driver's window, were broken out of it. Vandals had
broken in to the warehouse where it was stored and damaged it along with some
other cars stored there as well. The attorneys handling the estate had called
the local MB dealership and asked about replacement glass - which could be had
- and subsequently gagged on the cost. Hence, they decided to dump the car on
Craigslist as-is.

Joe drove the car, and despite having to wear his sunglasses to keep the wind
out of his eyes, said it ran and drove well. The body was all original and had
no rust, and the car was otherwise worn, but intact.

I made a couple of phone calls and was able to locate an auto glass place in
Redwood that would do the side windows. While talking with the glass guy, he
started asking me questions about the car. "Hey, you know, my dad, who lives
up near La Honda, has a car that's just like yours. It's been stuck in the mud
next to our garage for years." He indicated that Dad might part with the car,
especially since it would make Mom really happy to have the eyesore gone.

Some more research with Randy Steele of European Parts down in Santa Barbara
confirmed that Dad's car, a 1963 250S, had exactly the same glass.

So, I cut a deal with the glass guy's dad for $250 for the 250S, bought the
300SE, and flew out to the Bay area with my youngest son in tow. Al Lumas,
also of the R/E list, and owner of a horse ranch in Milpitas, offered to let me
get both cars to the ranch and keep them there long enough to swap parts and
prepare the 300SE for shipment back to Florida.

That Saturday we had a "listfest" of Bay area MB owners at Al's Ranch with a
barbecue and a "strip the parts car" party. By Tuesday I had everything
swapped over and all of the spares I could gather from the donor car packed in
the 300SE. The transport company came and loaded it later that week, while my
youngest son and I spent a much needed few days in the backcountry of Yosemite
National Park. Al was able to dispose of the donor car carcass, how I don't
know.

A week or so later, the car was in Florida. This was in August. I had it
cleaned up and running nicely within a week, and used it as a daily driver from
that point on.

I would add that the whole time this was taking place, a lurker on the R/E list
kept emailing me about the car, asking what I wanted for it. I made it pretty
clear I was not interested in selling.

Fast forward to October, and the water pump starts leaking. Bad. Understand
that unlike other finnies, the 300SE was the top of the line vehicle in its
day, costing close to $6,000 in 1962 (the price of a nice house, even in
California!) It has the M189 motor in it, essentially the same as the gullwing
in many respects. It's a highly engineered motor, and very unique in a lot of
respects, one of those being the water pump that is driven off the rear of the
generator!

There is something resembling a Lovejoy coupling between the two, then the pump
housing. Rusty, bless his heart, felt sorry for me because I totally freaked
when the pump failed and found out what it cost ($400!) Yes, they had one in
Germany, so I had to wait for it to be shipped over. It took nearly a month to
get it to me. Oy.

So now I start looking into parts prices - I had already done so somewhat,
after finding out a distributor cap was unobtanium ($300 for an NOS one if you
could find it) among other things. Again, panic started to set in when I
worried about what else might break and exceed the value of the car.

In the meantime, the lurker from the R/E list starts emailing me about the car
again. I'm pretty fed up with him by this point, so when he asks me, "What
will it take to buy the car?" I emailed him back with a really ridiculous price

Its rough...

Fortunately we got all through dinner and the first episode of "Sherlock"
(excellent!) on Amazon Prime with no loss of power. The sump pump did decide
not to play and as its raining very hard there is rather a lot of water in the
basement. The pump would work but wouldn't cycle on its own. I fiddled with the
float for awhile and now it cycles every few minutes. Strange, I'd even
vacuumed the dust out earlier today, should have wet tested it though.

So...opened the trunk for the first time this morning (now that I got the
correct key from Rusty) and there was a car cover, a Honda jack, the
correct jack on lug wrench...anyone have one?) , a spare holding air, a
large chain guide (new) and a stack of owners/maintenance manuals. Looks
like this car started its life in Santa Cruz, CA (first owners Joshua and
Eliza Baer). Pretty impeccable service records kept until 79K miles
(5/1983) all performed at a place called Bergstorm Motor Co in Santa Cruz.
Then there is a big gap until 8/31/87 when "an original MERCEDES BENZ
exchange engine" was installed. It has the mileage listed at 149,028. The
odometer shows 375K right now (but it is no working, of course).
Interesting.
So today I changed the oil and did the front brakes. When I was retracting
the inside piston on the drivers side, I got a few drips of brake fluid
out. So, can these calipers be rebuilt?

Next day off will be rebuilding calipers (if possible), renew brake fluid,
flush/fill coolant, exhaust donuts, manual transmission fluid renew (if I
can get the fill plug out), and the rear diff (ditto fill plug).

What else should be done to establish a baseline for this car? Also, is it
creepy to try to contact the former owners of this car?

I have two of them, both well north of 150k and both have been excellent cars

I did have to drop a chunk of change for a rear trailing arm that was bent, but

I love my 83 300d! Just got back from a trip to Rochester and back. 160 gps
miles, 5.35 gallons of fuel comes to 29.9mpg driving like I stole it. It
has NA gears in the rear so it comes off the line pretty well but really
turns some rpm's(tach doesn't work) at 75 and 80mph but runs along smooth
as can be at that speed. Gotta do a valve adjustment and general checkover
to get ready for an 1800 mile trip to Parris Island to pick up my son after
boot camp. So, 60 gallons or so of veggie oil should get me there and back.
That's about $5 worth of filtering and 1 hour of my time to process the
fuel. And, I get to drive one of the finest cars ever made.

I doubt it but the fifty mile example applies to my car since I want the
oil temp up as high as possible. It doesn't have an oil temp gauge but I can
tell pretty well by the oil pressure at a hot idle.

As to aircraft engines, very few are kept in climate controlled storage and
just sit out in the weather. But, when they are used, as you know the oil
temp gauge comes up pretty fast and if it runs for an hour or two I think any
condensation will be gone.

When a pilot pays by Hobbs meter, the engine is run at the top of the green
which means EGT and oil temps are watched carefully. And the higher you fly
the hotter it gets.

2012-10-29 Thread Curt Raymond
My 240D rolling average is 28mpg over 120,000 miles in 2 cars.

The '78 240D gets 28mpg average pretty much no matter what, it'll be
interesting to see it go down a bit with bio-diesel and it'll go down to maybe
26mpg if I hold it to 85mph all day but otherwise 28mpg. I got my '83 240D as
high as 32mpg at 60mph highway runs. Never had to opportunity to take it a
really long distance, I always thought it might have made 35mpg if I could have
run it at 60mph for a full tank of fuel.

My '84 190D 2.2l auto will easily do 40mpg if I take it easy, otherwise it
averages a solid 38mpg. The newer 60x engines are more efficient, the car is
smaller, lighter and has a lower co-efficeient of drag.

What year? 617 engine? I did glows on my '81 300TD without removing anything.
Its dammed fiddly but can be done.

AFAIK no light = no glow at least at first, at some point the light goes out
even though glowing may continue.

My old 300SD became hesitant to start lately. Lots of smoke for the first
minute or so.
No Preglow light. Tested the plugs and found #1 dead.
I attempted to change all the plugs but gave up after #1 (Light comes on
again).
I removed the fuel lines between the delivery valves and injectors but
could not figure out how to reach #5 plug. Coolant return line from heater
and filter housing in the way.
Two questions:
Is it possible to replace #4 & 5 plugs without removing the obstructions?
Does the preglow system work in spite of no indicator lght?

When I drive the car, it is never less than fifty miles and it isn't driven
at all during the cold months. Your theory was that even with not driving
it, the oil should be dumped annually and then I referred to all the Museum

This car is not a diesel with a crankcase full of soot and there is a
difference.

Plywood and fabric is not necessarily a bad thing (Spitfire?) but the rest
is highly suspect. Sounds like one of those planes that give experiment and
home built planes a bad reputation. It definitely didn't get passed by a
DAR. If it was under the ultralight weight limit, it was possibly legal.

Re: [MBZ] 115 speakers

2012-10-29 Thread Dieselhead
I think those are original. The 300D was a big splash back in 1976.
The was the first "lesser class" car to have stereo etc from MB.
Some of the 600s may have had stereo, and maybe early 70s SELs. But
the 76 was the first MB Diesel mit factory stereo in the NA market

My 76 300D has speakers mounted on the kick panels on both sides in
the front. The box is black and maybe 4" square.

I had assumed they were original but maybe not.

Not much compared to an automatic transmission. 2 or 3 quarts, IIRC,
which I may not. As I mentioned earlier, my books are packed up in a

PO in my 115 built a metal speaker mount for a 4" or 5", it worked pretty well.

DOT 4. I usually buy it from Rusty.

The manual transmission in a Mercedes DOES NOT use gear oil -- it uses
ATF! If you put gear oil in a Mercedes manual transmission, you will ruin
it, not only because it will get improper lubrication, but because the
sulfur in the gear oil will attack the metal of the synchros.

IIRC, a Dexron II or III product will work, but I have used Mobil1 ATF.

Re: [MBZ] Starting my 240D With a Wire

2012-10-29 Thread Randy Bennell

We did that with a Honda Civic that my s-in-l drove at one time years ago.

The ignition switch was part of an assembly that included the lights and
wipers etc and as such was expensive and a pain to change out in a car
that was not worth much.
We wired in a pushbutton. The ignition switch still turned the car on
and off but the start contacts were worn so it worked fine. Turn the key
on to the normal run position and push the button.

My 240D went through a few years of intermittent no-juicy-no-starty. I ran
a hot wire from the fuse block into the dash, put a intermittent pushbutton
switch on the lower-left dash near the door. The other side of the switch
was run directly to the small terminal in the starter.

At the time, no one had heard of the ign switch electrics ever wearing
out. So I ran several years with the push button. When it didn't start
with the key, I'd hit the pushbutton and it took right up. I eventually
figured out it was the switch, and replaced it, and never needed the
pushbutton after that.

The ign switch does wear out sometimes, especially in 25+ year old Diesels
with lots of start cycles.

Re: [MBZ] WAS OT Thirsty Pilot - NOW boat

2012-10-29 Thread Randy Bennell

The bit about the FAA inspector's findings reminded me of this from a
boating forum that I read.

Randy

"I drove up stream a bit to a small dirt landing, hand lauched the boat
and went about fishing for several hours. After a bit I decided to head
up stream and try for some crabs, a ways upstream we run across and old
man in an old, raggedy Renken trihull, with an OMC I/O set up. He was
tossing the anchor and retreiving rope.
I circled back and asked if I could help, he went on to explain that his
motor died and he couldn't get it started. He had been out all morning
and was only 1/4 of the way back to the ramp.
I offered to help and he said I was welcome to try but he gave up hours
ago.
To my surprise, the dog box was made of T111 siding, and about 3' taller
than normal. He proceeded to show me how the top of the box folds back
on hinges to expose the engine. (There were no gauges or controls on the
dash other than several toggle switches. The boat had bench seats
installed over a plain plywood deck. The seats were screwed in from each
side right through the glass hull. He said he didn't have a starter, and
when I flipped the home made cover back I saw why...
The original inline four cylinder motor was gutted, all but the oil pan
and block were gone. On top of the block where the cylinder head used to
reside was a steel plate, with a cast iron Wisconsin cement mixer motor
bolted on top of the original engine. There was what looked like a
motorcycle chain going from the air cooled engine up top down to a
sprocket welded to the original crankshaft. The oil pan was filled to
the edge, and he made a sheet metal funnel to keep the oil in the pan as
the chain turned. The added on motor has no recoil, only a rope sheave.
I gave it a few pulls and it didn't feel healthy inside.
I told the guy something broke inside, and that I'd try to tow him to
the dock"
