Garden stores have green foam "kneeling pads" that work okay for short jobs.
I have two heights of step stools that cover working heights below regular

Kneeling does me in, too. When I have to work on a server at work that's

I was amazed that the two or so hours I spent on a creeper the other night

Just like a "real" computer, the send (SMTP) is a whole
different protocol than receive (POP3 or IMAP). Both have to be
set up, and often use a different server. Like "mail.domain.com"

Re: [MBZ] Uh oh...

2012-12-25 Thread G Mann
Damage from overheat does not always result in scored pistons. However, if
the temp rise is large enough it may heat the pistons to the point the
camber is taken out of them. Pistons have an "egg shape" at the skirt area
to stop piston "slap" as it goes up and down. If the heat rise was enough
it may have deformed the skirt wall "egg" enough to make piston slap become
part of the engine noise set.

It may happen before the rings become hot enough to lose spring tension
that holds them out against the cylinder wall, thus start/run/power is
"relatively unaffected". In fact, as mentioned, start may happen faster
because of loss of friction the starter spins "relatively faster" Just
a thought.

A 740TD turbo is a nice car -- 31 mpg on the highway 29 in town,
wonderful to drive, dead reliable (although mine has been out of the
count for a while, fuel problems).

Weak points are the injection pump (Bosch distributor single piston
type) that does NOT like ultra-low sulfur fuel (use additive every
tank), head prone to cracks between the valves so bad the valve guide
come loose (just like the VW diesel, same engine but two cylinder).
Head can be welded, though, unlike a Benz.

Body is bulletproof, but not super safe on off-center collisions
(nothing that age is). Rack will eventually start leaking, but they
aren't expensive to rebuild.

Turbo is noisy, sounds like a distant police siren in stop and to
traffic, but not audible on the highway. If you can't hear it, it's
bad.

Best highway car I've ever had, including a W124. Seats are a bit
wider and softer than a Benz, so you don't get "stuck" with extended
sitting, but you still need to remove your wallet to keep from getting
a dent in your backside.

I need to revive mine so I can get the 300D back into shape.

The later models (940) didn't get the diesel in the US, so you have
the choice of a 740 D or TD. The D is going to be slow, it's a 2.4L
just like a 240, and as heavy. If you can find a TD with a 5 speed
(and they sold some) they are road rockets, really. 0-60 in 8 sec or
so.

They do smoke more than a Benz -- and if the EGR valve sticks open, as
they tend to do, they REALLY smoke, just like a bad Mack truck.

The cold start device causes problems too -- increases the fuel and
moves the timing up, and this can beat the top of the cylinder walls
out. No heavy throttle until fully warmed up, they last forever.
Heavy foot cold, rebuilt every 150,000 miles.

Massively overheated because the bottom radiator hose came off in the left lane

worth.
During my ownership this car has slid from "nice low end car" to "jalopy". I
didn't do a good job keeping it waxed and rust has erupted through the paint.
Its maybe a 5 out of 10 merely because its still pretty good mechanically but
its suffering in all the ways you'd expect a 34 year old daily driver to be
suffering. Needs some front end work, rust remediation, interior work and in
the end its a pretty base model 240D that I paid $1500 for 3 years ago. I
figure if you can get a year for every $500 of car you're doing pretty good.

That said based on today's results (see my last message) it looks as though
this car might get a new lease on life. I'm going to change the oil and drive
it for a few days to see what happens, if the oil and water stay on their

Pulled the alternators out of the 190D and 240D yesterday. Contrary to
popular opinion the 240D's alternator will NOT fit in the 190D, the wiring
is the same, the bolt pattern is about 1/8" different with the 240D alt
being slightly smaller in diameter but ever so slightly (like 1/128")
longer.

Never the less the wiring is the same, now remember the issue, with the
190D's proper 70a alt in place I had no warning lights for low fuel, brake
wear, parking brake or alt. With the 240D alt in place (well with the top
bolt in and wiring on) I had all the warning lights. I figure this is
enough to fully indict the 190D alternator. Now to get a new one... Car
Quest had already closed but for $140 they could get one next day (which
means Thursday now), Autozone could do $130 but couldn't have it until
early next week. Advance was about the same but could maybe do Friday.
Junkyard unit is $55. We're due to get snow Wed-Thursday so I'm thinking
to go the junkyard route, it'll have a 30 day warranty, I've got 3
regulators so I figure I'll clean the slip ring and put in a new regulator
before I install. Installation on the 190D is trivially easy, longest job
is jacking up the car and taking the belly pan off...

If it doesn't last I'll get the Autozone unit with its lifetime warranty.

Anyway its not fixed yet but good times are in sight!

[MBZ] Another piece of good news

2012-12-25 Thread Curt Raymond
To facilitate the alternator removal I'd parked the 240D next to the garage up
on some 4x4s but we've got 6-12" of snow in the forecast so I figured I ought
to make sure its mobile enough to at least move for snow removal.

I ran it some yesterday both to make sure the alternator still worked after
re-installation and as it was nose up to hopefully make sure the cooling system
was completely bled.

Again as with yesterday the car fired right up, its maybe 25F, and idled fine
with merely a small worrying tick somewhere in the valve train. I backed it off
the blocks (I'd made a ramp with some 2x6s and firewood for supports) and
removed all the blocking. Since the engine didn't seem warmed up I took it
around the block. The worrying tick goes away at low speeds but comes back
above about 2500rpm but other than that the car seems to have proper power and
if anything the throttle responds a little better than it did before. Is it
possible that massively overheating didn't hurt much of anything?

So my plan tomorrow is to go buy two more gallons of Mobil 1 15w50 (which is
what I was running anyway) and change the oil. If the worrying tick remains
I'll add Lucas oil additive (which is just viscosity improver) until the noise
goes away.

Years ago my cousin let his sister drive his Ford LTD (the horrible little one)
while he was away at college, she never added oil and the engine ticked like
crazy. He changed the oil and put in 2 quarts of STP until it quit making noise
and drove it for years like that...

My kid got some Who swag, he's pleased.

My wife, the semi-snobbish (occasionally) classical musician,
received a banjo from her loving husband. I guess she liked
it better than I had thought she would, she's been plucking
away at it for the last hour...

"Here's your room, Maestro!" I guess the joke's on me!

I gave her one box with a guitar bag in it, she guessed banjo,
and unzipped it to find a frying pan with a stick taped to it
inside. She thought that was funny. The next box had the axe
in it.

I brought out the tuner, and she looked at me like I was nuts.
"It's a banjo", said she, and started plucking away. The
transformation is eerie, I say.

Already in the 70s (20s for metric folks) here, sunny and clear, which is a
welcome change for the weather of late. It has been uncharacteristically
overcast a great deal lately, which is unusual.

The filet is out to reach room temperature, the fresh corn has been removed
from the cobs, the dough for the crescent rolls is rising and the fresh Brussel
sprouts have been washed and drained in anticipation of a quick steaming before
going in a skillet with some butter and freshly grated Parmesan cheese.

So many cookies and candies around I didn't prepare a dessert. Tomorrow starts
some serious physical exertion to work some of these calories off...

Wikipedia and others say it's "Beignet", but they do sound really good!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beignet

Beignet (pronounced /bɛnˈjeɪ/ in English, /bɛˈɲɛ/ in French; French,
literally "bump"),[1] synonymous with the English “fritter”, is the
French term for a pastry made from deep-fried choux paste.[2] Beignets
are commonly known in the U.S. as a dessert served with powdered sugar on
top; however, they may be savory dishes as well and may contain meat,
vegetables, or fruits.[2] They are traditionally prepared right before
consumption to be eaten fresh and hot. Variations of fried dough can be
found across cuisines internationally; however, the origin of the term
beignet is specifically French. In the U.S., beignets have been popular
within New Orleans Creole cuisine and are customarily served as a dessert
or in some sweet variation. They were brought to Louisiana in the 18th
century by French colonists,[3] from “the old mother country”,[4] and
became a large part of home-style Creole cooking, variations often
including banana or plantain – popular fruits in the port city.[5][6]
Today, Café du Monde is a popular New Orleans food destination
specializing in beignets with powdered sugar (served in threes), coffee
with chicory, and café au lait.[7] Beignets were declared the official
state doughnut of Louisiana in 1986.[8]

The tradition of deep-frying fruits for a side dish dates to the time of
Ancient Rome, while the tradition of beignets in Europe is speculated to
have originated with a heavy influence of Islamic culinary tradition.[9]
The term beignet can be applied to two varieties, depending on the type
of pastry. The French-style beignet in the United States has the specific
meaning of deep-fried choux pastry.[10] Beignets can also be made with
yeast pastry,[3] which might be called boules de Berlin in French,
referring to Berliner doughnuts which have a spherical shape (i.e. they
do not have the typical doughnut hole) filled with fruit or jam.

In Corsica, beignets made with chestnut flour (Beignets de farine de
châtaigne) are known as fritelli.

Near the gu'f for a few days. Sandy Beaches Not far from John
Robbins' parents and Snookie's parents. Normally I do white sweet
tater fries, but I have not been able to get em this year. None in
the store around turkey day or now. Been going by the fruitstands to
late at night or on Sunday when they are closed, so only yalla sweet
taters this year.

I mix butter flavored popcorn salt and Cookies Flavor Enhancer, (
http://store.cookiesbbq.com/ ) sort of a hot version of Lowreys
Seasoned Salt to put on em when they are done. Semi-cajun I guess
maybe.

Las' cupla turkeys turned out perfect cuz I threw out the directions
and did em my way.

In a cupla days we will go get some shrimp and eatem on the beach
watching sunset if the weather will cooperate. Shrimp on the beach
at sunset is a holdover from New years spent in Kona. Actually, the
shrimp ring for New years was started long before Kona even.

Yum sweet tater fries. Where do you live?

Very quiet day here, we had the family dinner yesterday since that's
when my brother could come up from Tennessee. However, we are
expecting a blizzard tonight, to I'm going to go and buy some gasoline
and see if I can get the generator started today, pull some turnips,
cut the last cabbages in the garden and get the brussels sprouts
frozen -- those sprouts were a surprise, didn't think there were any
big enough to eat with the rotten weather this summer.

I'll be shoveling snow tomorrow most likely, unless we get lucky and
get rain instead of snow.

turkey day. SWMBO will make cranberry sauce and

Some debate as to what direction to pursue due to
