Sadly she is practical and thrifty. For her upcoming birthday all she wants is
the house to be clean. WTF!?! Cash is something to be hoarded in her mind.
I wait patiently until her "new" car falls apart in a year or so. Then again,
she is going to sell that and move to Alaska, where she will drive some other
conveyance. Getting that thing will be a whole other crate of worms

I do think the CDI is more reliable than the rest of the w210 line. Too many
questions about quality on the earlier models. Of course, SWMBA reads Consumer
Report and tells me what rolling turds the benz are. Even though she drove
that E300 for 8 years and down graded to a korean sedan.

I may have won this battle. The war continues. Got the E300 headed to the
shop on the 17th. Found a PnP 95 in green with the bumper and fender, so all
it will need is respray. Should be able to pull it in under $2k.

Then SWMBA will demand that the car be sold so that a new bucket of problems on
wheels can be had. She is leaning toward oriental cars. I remain unwilling to
visit any dealer lots.

If you are growing heirloom plants - why are you not seed saving?
Tomatoes are especially easy and by saving the seeds from the plants
that do well in _your_ garden, you are optimizing them for _you_.

You're right Dan... its sad to see a good original car "customized" to
death. Value is in originality. Next step for this car will be the junk
yard, almost certainly. Most folks lack the skill to make all the details
of such a conversion work. If the same money and effort was put into the
original drivetrain, the owner would have something impressive
and desirable. And valuable.

I agree completely. Nothing is nicer to drive than a nice
110/111/112. That said, The 110 200D/2.4 is a nice conversion. When
we showed it, none of the experts even noticed it was a conversion.
A low dollar conversion at that.

Re: [MBZ] SVO and IP issues was RE: 1984 300D - won't start when hot.

2013-06-06 Thread Michael Esh
http://www.frybrid.com/svo.htm

I have included a link to an explanation and graph of vegetable oil and diesel
viscosity. Frybrid is the company from which I purchased my WVO system. The
only item I have replaced is the temperature sensor that sends the signal to
the controller that initiates the switchover valve to begin using the vegetable
oil fuel system. Frybrid replaced the sensor without question.
To those interested the site also contains a multitude of data and information
concerning the use vegetable oil as a fuel in diesel engines. I do not have
practical experience with any other WVO systems, however I read extensively
about the other systems available and decided this was my best option. That
said, I am replacing my fuel injection pump on my 84 300D with just over (to
the best of my knowledge)300,000 miles on it.

I enjoy collecting and using WVO in my Mercedes. I like saving some money,
helping the environment in a very small way, the challenge of keeping it
working, and most of the all, the smell of veg oil in the morning. It smells
like..well, chicken, shrimp, french fries, or fish. It all depends on
where I picked up the oil.

Thanks,
Mike

US insurers prepared for rough hurricane year

http://www.intelligentinsurer.com/news/us-insurers-prepared-for-rough-hurricane-year#%2EUa8E4UOv1q4%2Elinkedin

excerpts:

Despite predictions of a rough hurricane season ahead for US insurers, the
sector looks well prepared for such an eventuality according to AM Best,
which notes that the industry's collective balance sheet is hitting record
levels even after Superstorm Sandy.

Some forecasts suggest that 2013 could see three times as many severe
hurricanes make landfall in the US. But a report by AM Best suggests risk
management practices implemented by the insurance industry in recent years
mean it should be able to cope.

During 2012, there were 19 named storms, 10 hurricanes and two major
hurricanes (Category 3 or higher). The general consensus for 2013 seems to
be fewer named storms but an increased number of higher intensity
hurricanes. In 2012, only 20% of hurricanes were Category 3 or higher
whereas 2013 predictions are for 40%-50% of hurricanes to be Category 3 or
higher.

In addition, it noted that many P/C writers are beginning to use data
collected from Sandy to revise underwriting practices and implement numerous
risk management initiatives to address adjustments to catastrophe models.

"There is the potential for increased losses," the rating agency said in a
report. "But regardless of the predictions for catastrophic activity and the
associated uncertainty, the P/C industry continues to engage actively in
risk management, which has been evident over the past several years.

"Despite the volatile catastrophic activity witnessed across the US, there
have been a limited number of rating actions related to single, severe
catastrophes. Conversely, the aggregation of losses from multiple events has
had more of a rating impact.

Looks like they're predicting the same for up here in NJ. National
Weather

Service puts out some good briefings with possible scenarios:
http://www.erh.noaa.gov/okx/FB_Briefings/WxBriefing_FB.pdf

Should be lots of rain in a short period of time, so flooding is always
possible in some places. Storm surge and wind don't look like much to
worry about.

But, it is a bit concerning to have a tropical storm of any kind on this
track so early in the season. Hopefully this isn't going to be come a
trend for the rest of the season.

I've heard of plugging the weep hole (self tapping screw? 5 minute epoxy?)

One of the ones that was on there will probably be OK as the
rubber is still good, other then some slight cracking. The other
two from the SD rear end will not work as they are longer then
the axles on the D and TD. I will probably put in the used one
that is OK and maybe look to replace it later. The only problem
with that is that it is more difficult to replace an axle while
everything is in the car. Much easier to do it now with
everything out.

Anyone have an opinion as to whether it is better to put the used
axle back in in the original position or would it possibly last a
bit longer on the other side as that way a slightly less worn set
of surfaces will be in use when going forward.

Possible Link Of Milorganite To Lou Gehrig's Disease Stirs Controversy
JAMES A. CARLSON , Associated Press
MILWAUKEE (AP) _ Sixty years ago, Milwaukee transformed a sewage disposal
problem into a bonanza by pioneering a process that uses human and
industrial wastes to make a nitrogen-rich fertilizer for commercial sale.
Now there are fears that heavy metal in the fertilizer, which earns the
Metropolitan Sewerage District $6 million a year, may be linked to the fatal
illness known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
Researchers caution, however, that there is as yet no evidence of a definite
connection, that reports of a link are so far anecdotal, and that clusters
of Gehrig's disease cases are not unusual.
The fertilizer, called Milorganite, has been produced since 1926 and was
applied to fields used by professional football's San Francisco 49ers in the
1960s.
Three members of the 1964 team contracted the neuromuscular disease, and two
of them, Gary Lewis and Matt Hazeltine, have died. The third, Western
Carolina University football coach Bob Waters, 48, is battling the disease,
formally called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS.
The Milwaukee Sentinel reported recently that other ALS patients have told
of some contact with Milorganite, and that of 155 sewer district employees
who died since 1961, two died of ALS.

The normal incidence of ALS is two cases per 100,000 people.
Tom Kaczkowski, president of the union local representing the workers, said
people who work with Milorganite should be concerned.
''It could be a very serious thing, but there's no concrete information
yet,'' said Kaczkowski, who has worked occasionally with the fertilizer.
Medical researchers and producers of Milorganite agree there is no evidence
of a definite connection with the disease. Part of the problem is the
elusive nature of ALS, which causes a gradual breakdown of nerve cells that
control muscles of the limbs and throat. Although ALS was recognized nearly
a century ago, its causes are unknown.
Among its well-known victims were Lou Gehrig, the New York Yankees' first
baseman who was stricken and died in 1941, and former Sen. Jacob Javits of
New York, who died in March 1986.
Benjamin Brooks, director of the ALS Clinical Research Center at the
University of Wisconsin-Madison, said reports of a possible link with
Milorganite so far amount only to anecdotal evidence but helped spur plans
for a study involving hundreds of patients in Wisconsin.
However, Brooks and other experts cautioned that clusters of ALS cases are
not unusual.
''I'm a little uncomfortable about the way this has taken on headline
proportions,'' said Dr. Neil J. Lewis, assistant director of research with
the Muscular Dystrophy Association in New York City.
Investigations into past clusters found no causal factor, even in the case
of three ALS victims who formerly taught school in the same Ohio classroom,
Lewis said. The exception, Lewis said, is the high incidence of the disease
on Guam, where an environmental factor in food and water is suspected.
''Our feeling is that it's always important to pursue background
information'' of ALS patients, Lewis said, but he noted that no conclusive
links have been made between ALS and heavy metals, such as those in
Milorganite.
Brooks said heavy metals such as the cadmium in Milorganite are among many
suspected links with ALS. Other possibilities include regular exposure to
electrical shocks, certain viruses or abnormal immune system functions and
regular, strenuous athletic activity.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency warned about high cadmium levels in
Milorganite a decade ago, prompting Milwaukee's sewer district to begin a
program requiring industrial pollution sources to reduce discharges of the
material into the sewage system.
The program reduced the cadmium level to what the district considers a safe
amount.
But the district has directed a ''group of national medical experts'' to
review evidence and decide whether a full-scale study should be done. ''More
light needs to be shed on the question,'' said Patrick Marchese, the
district's executive director.
In 1926, the district opened what it said was the first large-scale,
activated sewage sludge plant in the world. The sludge is preconditioned in
an acid bath, vacuum-filtered to remove moisture and dried.
Thomas J. Hagerty, district spokesman, said about 60,000 dry tons of
Milorganite is produced a year, with slightly less than half marketed in 40-
pound bags and the rest sold in bulk. He said the recent publicity was not
expected to affect plans to expand Milorganite production by about 25
percent.

Re: [MBZ] From wet to dry ...

2013-06-06 Thread Gerry Archer

Georgetown Traditions: What's A Hoya?
The origins of the word "Hoya" defy simple explanation. Over the years, some
have claimed it is an Indian word, while those of a legal mind thought it
related to the French word oyez, the traditional opening of judicial
sessions. Still others held that with Georgetown's location along a river,
Hoya might be an offshoot of the nautical "ahoy". None of these claims have
held water, so to speak.
The official explanation holds that there was a baseball team at Georgetown
called the "Stonewalls". It is suggested that a student, applying Greek and
Latin, dubbed the team the hoia saxa-- hoia is the Greek neuter plural for
"what" or "what a", while saxa is the Latin neuter plural for "rock".
Substituting a "y" for an "i"; "hoya saxa" literally means "what rocks".
To this day, however, no one has proven exactly when and under what
circumstances the yell originated. While there was a Stonewalls team between
1866 and 1873, an actual reference to the team is pure speculation. Some
have held that hoia saxa referred not to the team but its surroundings--the
team's field (the present site of Copley Lawn) was bounded by the College
Walls along 37th street. One theory holds that words such as saxa (Latin for
"rocks") were scribbled on the walls for years and a similar phrase may have
simply been adopted by fans of the baseball team.
The Hoya yell gained additional attention in 1920. In that year, a fledgling
student newspaper known as The Hilltopper petitioned Rev. Coleman Nevils,
S.J., Dean of the College, to change its name to The HOYA, a name said to be
more representative of the University. Nevils, who had championed naming the
Holy Cross student paper "The Hoia" without success in 1916,
enthusiastically approved the change.
As the college paper was often cited by sportswriters covering Georgetown
sports in the 1920's, it took only a few years for a nickname to be born. By
the fall of 1928, a HOYA sportswriter began to refer to the football team as
the "Hoyas" rather than its contemporary nickname of the "Hilltoppers". The
change was picked up by local writers as basketball season began, and Hoyas
became the official Georgetown nickname within a few years.
Among all college programs, only Georgetown University holds this unique
team nickname to which its students, faculty, alumni, and fans can take
pride in. But the Hoya yell did find its way into the fight songs of two
other Jesuit colleges: Holy Cross' "Hoiah, Holy Cross", and Marquette's
"Ring Out Ahoya". Each appears to have its roots, however distant, in the
yell begun on a college yard many years ago. In short, "Hoya" may be
difficult to define, but its tradition endures.

And that's "what" it's all about.

'Been wondering that, myself.

only leaks under pressure, so its dry when the engine is cool. I wonder if

No problem. So long as I pay the sales taxes at the border, I can bring a

I normally just bring a couple of jugs at a time.
I run it in the truck and my wife's car but have not changed the 300D to

I only drive the car about 3K miles a year and change the oil annually so

Should be lots of rain in a short period of time, so flooding is

[MBZ] Ramps

2013-06-06 Thread clay
Not the sort you drive up, but the stinky kind you eat.

I had a shipmate send me out some ramps a number of years ago. There were more
than a person should be made to eat and the stench was not to SWMBA liking. I
gobbled as many as I possibly could and in an assortment of dishes until
everybody refused anything I made with a ramp in it. What the heck was I to do
with at least a pound of ramps going bad?

I intended to sneak a few into the local forests on spring scouting trips for
fall hunts. I was not able to hit the field that spring, so I seem to have
tossed a few of the ramps into my garden. I do know I planted a bunch along my
property line in an attempt to make a royal stench, as my neighbor is a jerk.

Fast forward eight years. I have been taking the garlic cloves that start to
sprout and poking them into my garden. For the past five years I have been
trying to harvest said garlic. Damn stuff comes out looking like elephant
garlic, so it is not breeding true. I tried plucking the plants up sooner to
attempt to catch them at a stage where the heads are standard size. That never
happens. The plant is either a bulb or a massive head of allium. Crap!

So the neighbor I do like comes over one day and asks if I would be willing to
let her harvest the leeks in my garden. I have NEVER planted a leek in my life
to my knowledge. I go out and have her point out what she has identified as a
leek. It is the damn what I thought was garlic. Look this plant up in garden
books and it is more leek than a garlic and ... So, she takes a bunch and makes
her potato leek soup. She tells me it tastes funny, not really leeky, a bit
strong.

I think back. A bit strong? Not a true garlic smell when you harvest or use
the heads to cook with. It is not a garlic, looks like a leek, must be some
unknown sort that I would never have planted. Then I take some sweet tea and a
5 gallon bucket and sit with the plant until I figure out the climate here must
mirror the Carolina and Virginia mountains. Must be a ramp. I will know
better next March when I see if they taste like a ramp.

2013-06-06 Thread Curt Raymond
Self leveling suspension. If it doesn't work or this is the one that had it
removed you're dreaming of 5 figures.

Actually I think you're kind of dreaming of 5 figures anyway with mis-matched
parts in the car and the kind of mileage we're talking about. If its really
nice $6k doesn't seem unreasonable. I'd expect selling such at thing and
looking for top dollar to be an intensely frustrating exercise as perspective
buyers will pick it to death.

Interestingly NADA says $5700 - $15900, quite a spread...

Too rich for my blood anyway. My next car will probably be a step up from my
standard $1500 almost-hoopty but if its an old car it'll probably be a $3,000
nearly hoopty.

The cat's digestion isn't 100% complete and cat food should be almost

filler (well, cheap dog food anyway, not the stuff we buy) with a little

Re: [MBZ] 69 years A Reminder

2013-06-06 Thread Randy Bennell

Interesting little story from the book that I cannot recall hearing before.

Churchill wanted to take the offensive but it was too early to go take
France. mid 1942. He pushed the military folks to do something. They
came up with the idea of a commando raid on a big drydock in France a
few miles up the Loire R. (don't quote me on the names as the spelling
might be off!). It was built for the Normandie cruise ship which had
burned in New York a month or more earlier, but it was the only known
drydock big enough to fit the Turpitz (sp again) which was a sister to
the Bismark. Churchill thought that if they could knock out this
drydock, then Hitler would be less willing to send the big boat out
after the convoys in the Atlantic because there would be no place to run
to for repairs if it became necessary. So they loaded an old US destoyer
obtained in the early lend/lease program with tons of dynamite in the
bows and sailed it up the river in the dark and rammed the doors on the
drydock. They then scuttled the ship and made their escape. The dynamite
was supposed to blow soon after they left but the fuse did not work. The
Germans showed up and spent the day examining the boat and taking photos
to send home etc. There were several hundred of them on board when the
fuse kicked in and blew them all to you know where.

Churchill was right and Hitler did not send the big boat out. Turpitz
basically sat in a fjord in Norway waiting for a British attack that
never came until it was sunk by Lancaster bombers in 1944.

Basically from memory as I do not have the book here. So, if you search
and find my details are not accurate, remember that I did my best.

Roosevelt is trying to gear up industry to produce the tanks, planes

Hitler is already stalled in Russia and Stalin is demanding that he
get to keep a bunch of new territory after the war.
Churchill and Roosevelt are none too happy about that but need Stalin
to keep Hitler occupied while they try to build up enough military
might to go after him.
Japan has taken over the Pacific and things look pretty bad out

Cool!

Barbara and I will have been married 40 years come August.
Our house is almost 32 years old. We bought it new in 1981. The basement
was poured around the beginning of July and we got keys in late September.
Ben, our dog will be 10 in July. He is a Bichon so he should be good for
another 5 or more years.

He is slowing a little but still in pretty good shape.
Our boys are 28 and 24.

Re: [MBZ] Put your Merc on blocks

2013-06-06 Thread Rich Thomas
This was a storm that developed in the Gulf and is moving up along the
coast, not an uncommon occurrence -- it is not an Atlantic storm (which
come across from Africa). It is a minimal TS, it will rain a lot, maybe
blow a bit, but just matter of course here on the fringe.

I am more worried that it is a new moon high tide, +6.7 here tonight and
tomorrow night which is higher than "normal" so if there is any surge
there will be a lot of flooding. Charleston will probably be kayak
territory tomorrow as it floods on spring tides, and if there is any
rain at all, nowhere near 4 or 5" it will be flooded all over the place.

Here on the marsh we will likely get some very high tides, last night we
had about 2" of rain and it is wet out there at low tide now from all
the runoff. The breeze is freshening a bit and it is starting to
sprinkle a bit, most will be moving in later tonight, and might
strengthen a bit as it gets to the east coast and gets more warm and
moisture off the water.

Looks like they're predicting the same for up here in NJ. National Weather

That last part isn't quite true if you're using cat poo in your compost. The
cat's digestion isn't 100% complete and cat food should be almost 100% meat
with little in the way of filler. Dog food by comparison is mostly filler
(well, cheap dog food anyway, not the stuff we buy) with a little meat. Dog
food can kill cats as they can't digest the filler.

Theres all kinds of animal proteins in your compost.

We have a sporting goods/clothing store (Sams in Swanzy, NH) that has popcorn.
Its a good place because my wife can shop for clothes while I look at guns,
bows, tents and such and eat popcorn.

Re: [MBZ] Opine away - Limited Edition 190E

2013-06-06 Thread Chris James
No, that is a real "Limited Edition"! The seller does note that he
wrapped the original trim due to cracking, it's very similar to the
original though. I'm surprised you've never heard of them or seen one.
700 each were produced of the 190E 2.3 & 2.6 for the '93 MY. There was
no charge for the additional equipment totaling around $3K, a steal really!

The 2.3 came in monotone metallic emerald green w/ cream beige leather &
additional burl wood trim, the 2.6 in two tone black w/ black & red
leather sport seats & carbon fiber trim. Easily recognizable by the 8
hole rims & headlight wipers, which at the time were either not
available (in the case if the rims) or rarely seen on the standard 190.

Despite the handling upgrades & sport seats/trim on the 2.6 Limited
Edition it did not have "Sportline" exterior badging, also the standard
model designation was omitted on the trunk lid of both models. The 2.6
did have a Sportline gearshift knob though.

ahead of its time."

Why no Sportline badges on the front fenders?
Did the Sportline seats have those red inserts in them in 1993?
I'd have to take a close look at my 16v and 2.5 turbo before I could say
whether it's got the Sportline sized steering wheel.

The shift knob doesn't look leather, but I'm not familiar with auto
tranny Sportlines, I always used to look for manuals.

I don't think those wheels came from a W201.
That 'carbon fiber' in the dash looks aftermarket to me.

I'm thinking that somebody got a hold of a four passenger seat set and
modified a non-Sportline car's interior, and stuck W124 wheels on it.

Mitch.

My brother, Lewis Clyde Strickland, then 21 and with 3 1/2 yrs in

on Omaha Beach, France, at 0730 on the 6th of June, 1944, to clear
obstacles, secure the beach and control traffic to, from and on the

demolition, signalmen, radiomen, riflemen, medics, bulldozer
operators and others - whatever necessary to manage the beach. They
wore army combat uniforms and trained with the Army for the
invasion. The only thing visible to distinguish them from army
troops was an arc painted across the front of their helmets. Most
of the men in his platoon were teenagers just 17, 18 and 19 years

a few, such as Lewis, had been in the invasion of North Africa.
Though small in stature, Lewis was a giant in courage, dedication to

Re: [MBZ] Sears service?

2013-06-06 Thread Dieselhead

Sears used to be good. They would bend over backwards to make things right.
Unfortunately, I think they are on their way to bankruptcy and have
had to cut back so much that the service has become terrible, which
will likely hasten their demise.
I think the stock in the tool area is not nearly so good as it once
was and you can forget after sales service.

My son bought a big mechanic's toolbox setup from Sears. $2K on a good sale.
Within a couple of years he was having issues with drawer slides.
We have never been able to get parts for it.
They don't seem to have any idea who made the box for them.
I have tried for a year or two, on and off to find the slides and
have given up.
We can use normal slides from Lowe's but will have to drill and
rivet because we cannot get the ones that would just drop into the
clips.

More than annoying.
Talk to them in the store and they give you an 800# to call.
Call the # and you get people who promise to find out and call back
but never do.
We have big Sears repair depot in the city and I have gone there and
spent an hour with a nice young fellow who did his best to help but
ultimately did not.
He came up with a couple of names of companies that made toolboxes
for them but I contacted both with details and both ultimately said
the box was not made by them.

So, no more Craftsman toolboxes for us EVER.

Thus they long ago earned my monikers crapsman and dieEasy.

Randy

If it was made in USA, try Waterloo Industries, Waterloo IA (home of
john Deere) They USED to make all the snears boxes.

Home Depot, here in Canada at any rate, seems to make their money on the
little stuff.

Go buy a sheet of plywood and it may not be unreasonable.
BUT, go buy something like a new end to put on an extension cord and it
costs an arm and a leg.

The markup on the little stuff must be outrageous.
That is what I find disturbing about the current retail business.
They advertise competitive prices on the bigger items but rob you blind
on the smaller ones that are not advertised.

Re: [MBZ] Sears service?

2013-06-06 Thread Curt Raymond
Sears, like so many companies, decided that everything was all about price. As
long as the prices were low, they theorized, people would buy. Well of course
if your prices are super low you can't afford good help so they got rid of
anybody who knew anything and kept the mouth breathers who would work for no
wages. As soon as anybody got any kind of smart they left for greener pastures.

Today we're finding that most companies have done the same thing and we're left
with a retail world which has raced to the bottom. Sears is done, JC Penny is
done. Lowes and Home Depot hang on for reasons I don't understand. I come out
of those places angry every time. The only reason I go is because often I don't
know what I'm talking about and its easy to browse.

The local places that survive are the ones that focus on customer service.
We've got an excellent lumberyard/hardware store near our farm. When you order
lumber the salesperson goes to the yard with you and picks out your materials.
Its that extra service that makes me want to go there. If I don't know exactly
what I want the salesperson goes out with me and shows me the options. Its a
great place and they're doing great business because of it.

Sears used to be good. They would bend over backwards to make things right.
Unfortunately, I think they are on their way to bankruptcy and have had
to cut back so much that the service has become terrible, which will
likely hasten their demise.
I think the stock in the tool area is not nearly so good as it once was
and you can forget after sales service.
My son bought a big mechanic's toolbox setup from Sears. $2K on a good sale.
Within a couple of years he was having issues with drawer slides.
We have never been able to get parts for it.
They don't seem to have any idea who made the box for them.
I have tried for a year or two, on and off to find the slides and have
given up.
We can use normal slides from Lowe's but will have to drill and rivet
because we cannot get the ones that would just drop into the clips.
More than annoying.
Talk to them in the store and they give you an 800# to call.
Call the # and you get people who promise to find out and call back but
never do.
We have big Sears repair depot in the city and I have gone there and
spent an hour with a nice young fellow who did his best to help but
ultimately did not.
He came up with a couple of names of companies that made toolboxes for
them but I contacted both with details and both ultimately said the box
was not made by them.
So, no more Craftsman toolboxes for us EVER.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Chipper/Shreaders

2013-06-06 Thread Curt Raymond
What method did you use to compost?
I use a big pile and let it rest for a year which should allow most baddies to
die off. I don't compost poop (dog poo gets spread under a maple tree) but I do
compost meat, milk, yogurt and all sorts of other stuff thats "bad".

Above ground plants (i.e. not radishes, carrots, potatoes and the like) should
at least in theory have less chance of passing on stuff from your compost. I
suppose the greatest risk is from touching the soil.

The field across the street from my parent's house has been spread with sewer
sludge as long as anyone can remember. I used to fly kites in that field. We
would of course wait for the sludge to get rained on and dry out good before
heading over but it doesn't seem to have hurt me any.

For the record, I tilled in a binful of my cat-centric compost and planted
some cucumbers, with peppers and hopefully eggplant to follow. If all goes
to plan, I will be a guinea pig for your theories about cat to human
transfer of toxoplasmosis, feline lukemia, or hairballs.

About '51 or '52. AFROTC instructors at NC State College, Raleigh, were
still wearing Army green occasionally at that time. Army uniform styling
persisted for MANY years. I wore blue Ike jacket occasionally well into
'60's - well, maybe 63 or so.

When an impact driver went on sale last weekend, Sears.com told me that the

is much easier to maintain our constitution and Bill of Rights that to
reclaim those freedoms when lost.

I am about half way through the 3rd and final volume of a biography of
Winston Churchill written by William Manchester - The Last Lion.
He wrote the 2 earlier volumes many years ago and I read them then. I
waited and watched for the final one and have about given up.
Thankfully, Manchester realized that he needed help and enlisted the
assistance of another writer whose name escapes me at the moment - Paul
something I believe.
Manchester subsequently died and the new fellow finished the book and it
bears both of their names.

This 3rd volume begins when Churchill becomes Prime Minister at the
outset of WW2.
I am halfway through the book and we are only up to 1942. The Americans
have been beaten up by the Japanese but have not done much in the war as
yet.
Roosevelt is trying to gear up industry to produce the tanks, planes etc
that are needed to do battle and to develop the manpower too.
Hitler is already stalled in Russia and Stalin is demanding that he get
to keep a bunch of new territory after the war.
Churchill and Roosevelt are none too happy about that but need Stalin to
keep Hitler occupied while they try to build up enough military might to
go after him.
Japan has taken over the Pacific and things look pretty bad out there.
Rommel is taking North Africa etc.
Churchill is being criticized by his political enemies at home due to
the failure of the military to hang on to the far eastern parts of the
empire, Singapore etc.

A bit slow going at this point but should get better.
