Why would you run a car without the cap if nothing else is wrong? If there
is nothing else wrong the temp should never reach the boiling point of
water let alone an antifreeze mix. Basically if your Diesel is idling hot
enough to boil over I am betting the cap is not the only problem.

The problem with the car in question is obviously not a temp issue but a
pressure issue. Bad head or block, maybe blown gasket leaking cylinder
pressure into the cooling system is more likely.

More anecdotal evidence to say, if you operate your MB with a loose coolant
cap, it will overheat. I have no clue why this is, though. Any engineers have a
hypothesis? Does Philip care to operate his car with a loose coolant cap to
test the theory?

That would account for the overheat but not for the coolant bubbling out of the

I think Kevin's theory about a crack somewhere in the block (we went over the

A neat idea, some kind of planetary gearset inside the head. Is it about the
size of a normal socket? How fine is the ratchet, meaning can you swing it good
in a small space?

I wonder (and only time will tell) if its actually lubricated in the gearset.
After much frustration I pulled a Craftsman apart to find it wasn't... A dab of
grease made the ratchet much more pleasant.

Thats about what I paid for my (pre-reorg) SK ratchet which is a fine American
made tool. I bought it when I finally gave up on Craftsman for making junk.

Okay guys this madness has to end, none of you are apparently actually reading
anything I write, you've all gotten hung up on the radiator cap.

Lets review the facts:

#1. '78 240D, no expansion tank, no aux pump.

#2. As soon as the car is started coolant starts bubbling out of the hood due
to bubbles of gas pushing in there. When the car is shut off there is always
one more big bubble of gas which will push around a cup of coolant off.

#3. The car overheats sitting running in the driveway. While I appreciate
Luther's story it doesn't relate, the car should not overheat sitting in the
driveway with the radiator cap off, if it did that would mean there couldn't
possibly be enough cooling capacity to go on the highway ever.

#4. I drove 5,000 miles (most of it on the highway) with the radiator cap loose
and the car didn't overheat.

#5. The car will push coolant past the radiator cap and still overheat.

#6. There is no cabin heat when running.

I would submit at this point that you can knock it off about the radiator cap,
the radiator cap will not save this engine...

I wonder if our failure to communicate is the difference between a 61x engine
like my 616 and a 60x engine.

Everybody who has offered up tales of woe from a bad or loose pressure cap has
talked about a 60x engine. I wonder if that engine has water passages that only
get accessed with pressure.

Certainly when I put the new radiator in my 240D last fall I could run it up to
temp with no radiator cap.

You guys do see me writing RADIATOR CAP right? Its in the radiator, right
smack in the middle, there is no overflow bottle. Excess coolant goes out on

Talk of radiator caps reminds me: Nearly 30 years ago, I had taken my
still-nearly-new '80 240D (purchased new in Nov '79) into local stealer's
for some minor repair or PM one morning; about mid-afternoon I stopped by to
check on it and noticed that it was in shop, with hood up. I walked back
there to speak to tech about it, etc. As I approached the car, I noticed
that the radiator cap was OLD and rusty - not the nearly new, shiny one that
was on it when I left the car that morning. I asked tech what had happened
to my radiator cap. Tech seemed as surprised as I was - supposedly had not
noticed. Some sorry etc., had switched an OLD rusty one with my nearly new
one!!! Of course, I had to buy a new one - crapped-upon again.

you have an issue with cylinder pressure escaping through a crack into the

Why would you run a car without the cap if nothing else is wrong? If there
is nothing else wrong the temp should never reach the boiling point of
water let alone an antifreeze mix. Basically if your Diesel is idling hot
enough to boil over I am betting the cap is not the only problem.

The problem with the car in question is obviously not a temp issue but a
pressure issue. Bad head or block, maybe blown gasket leaking cylinder
pressure into the cooling system is more likely.

 My $.02, Mike

I will do that and stay on them about following up. I have some minimal

[MBZ] MPG (was: Re: more crazy travel)

2013-06-17 Thread ernest breakfield
we typically see ~20MPG in mixed tanks of 'round-town and hwy flying
while on B99 BioD.

just got back from another thousand-mile weekend, turning 80+ MPH
for hours on I5 with the AC on in temps over 90*F in the Central Valley
mixed with some stopslow one way through Los(t) Angeles. filling up
with #2 at a couple of truck stops, it looks like we were seeing
something in the range of 23MPG.

saw indicated coolant temps briefly creep to ~110C while climbing
the Grapevine both ways while still floating past much of the traffic,
but otherwise saw ~90-95*C most of the time.

still feels pretty good for and old car that looks and cruises as
nicely as it does.

Seriously, I got 20 mpg on my NA 79 300TD and a but more (maybe 22) on the
highway. My bigger turbo 300SD gets 25 mpg and maybe 27 on the highway.
Both on DF2.

I went to UVA back in the mid 60s and the DC area was a just a bunch of
sleepy little towns with few traffic problems. I often drove through the
area going between NJ and VA. We even went to DC to buy booze or to go to a
nice restaurant or watch the airplanes takeoff and land at National. The
area has since grown like a cancer, IMO (under Ds and Rs). It's easy to see
where so much of our tax $$$ are going.

[MBZ] hose just like an sls hi pressure hose

2013-06-17 Thread Rick Hawkins Java

Folks,

Here's a forklift story.

Yesterday, i needed to unload and load some printing machines from and
to my isuzu NPR truck.

A friend had taken the battery for my Dadsumforklift. Said it was his
and it probably was. So installed another group 24 battery that i had.
Fortunately i stated it with the hood (seat) up so i could see the
engine.

Liquid propane was pouring out of a hose.

I guess he dragged the battery across the braided hose.

I took it off and there were no options on saturday for hose repair in
athens, ga. So today i went to my hose guy. It's the same 3/8 9.5 mm
hose as the SLS hi pressure hose on my 300td with same style
removeable fittings. We unscrewed the end with tubing wrenches then
LEFT HAND THREADS we unscrewed the collar on the outside and it was a
simple matter to lube and insert it all to the replacement hose
looks good

$15. i did it in their shop on their vice

I'm about to install and hopefully get back to work without a propane
leak!

thanks,

xx rick

Cauldron sounds at startup and no cabin heat - that can't be. I doubt
head compromise or water passage blockage - except at some gasket

is passing combustion gas to the cooling system? Can you get the

2013-06-17 Thread Randy Bennell

Not all of us.

I suggested a crack somewhere, on Friday afternoon.

Should be able to pressurize the system and look for a leak.
If combustion pressures are causing fluid to blow out of the system,
then one would think it must be in the upper reaches of the cylinder
wall or the head? More likely the head?
Heat causes the crack to open more maybe which is why it blows out
coolant when it is hot?

Can one pressurize the system and look for coolant to appear in one or
more of the cylinders?

Randy who is rambling no doubt

I like that suggestion.

I bet if all things are isolated from the engine, the cauldron will

Re: [MBZ] I think its the end

2013-06-17 Thread Scott Ritchey

Have you tried one of those radiator pressure testers that screws on in
place of the radiator cap? You can usually borrow them for free from FLAPS.
When I had several old cars I found that tool so useful that I bought one.

It's hard to tell what's happening with the engine hot and running. But
with a still engine, you can pump it up and often see or hear leaks that are
masked with the engine running.
