Re: [MBZ] '06 320CDI
True. Here's the deal: When I got the car, the only thing that didn't work on it was the parking brake. You pulled on the release and it just slid right out of the dash. Pressing the pedal down applies the parking brake, but it doesn't latch. I removed the release handle and found that the cable was disconnected. I reconnected it, only to now have a release handle that sticks out of the dash 2-3, and still doesn't release the parking brake, which also continues not to latch. On two occasions I've pulled the knee bolster out to get at the parking brake pedal, but it has a plastic cover that goes around it that has to be removed before you can get to anything substantive. After laying on my back under the dash and hanging out of the door opening for 30 minutes, I'm done. Without removing this cover you can't do a thing down there. Now I know why this was left unresolved. Even the PO's indie probably didn't want to deal with it. Maybe when the weather cools off I'll take another shot at it. I'm confused as to why it won't latch, or if it got jury-rigged not to since the release cable doesn't work Dan Sent from my iPad On Jul 27, 2015, at 5:40 AM, Rick Knoble via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: Dan I'm not OCD, I'm particular Man writes: I’m just living with it, as much as it pains me. Unfortunately I think tire quality can vary significantly between sizes, as well as manufacturer date, so (insert brand name here) tires with the same model name can perform at opposite ends of the quality spectrum, if they are different sizes, made on different days, made by different plants, etc. User reviews should be highly discounted as biased to either extreme, in my opinion. Re: [MBZ] '06 320CDI
True. That could very well be the case, but without getting the whole assembly out or at least being able to access it, I can't tell. The release cable is buried in the pedal assembly somehow, and even requires a special tool to remove and install it. There are two bolts that hold the whole thing in place, but without removing the plastic cover that surrounds the whole pedal assembly you can't get to the top bolt. Most plants now have high turnover, so the tires don't last long, because of the low skill/artisan level of the tire builder. I agree, it is a crapshoot, unless you can get Continentals built in Germany. I've never had a failure with those. Tire builder is a physically demanding job. I agree with Max, traction is the key. you have only a few square inches of contact surface between the vehicle and the road. You need traction in wet, muddy, schnee and ice conditions as well as very hot and very cold dry conditions. Tires are the best insurance you can buy. Mid range tires generally offer the best traction/value compromise. Personally, I like blizzaks and a summer road tire combination. Blizzak/general is an acceptable combo, though not optimal. High mileage/long wearing tires generally have poor traction. Back in the 70s when GM put long wearing uniroyals on their new cars, the junkyards were loaded with GM low mileage vehicles that slid into something, or slid off the road and rolled. Re: [MBZ] '06 320CDI
I've heard that before on this list, but I use it on locks and everything else since it first came on the market and have no problems. WD-40 contains a very light oil and probably leaves a little residue, but how many of the millions of people who use WD-40 have problems with that residue? If a mechanical part has a very tight fit I can see how someone could have a problem with WD-40 residue. WD-40 started out as a water dispersant for missile nose cones but quickly became the very popular solvent/lubricant it is today. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WD-40 Modern industrial society may not be possible without WD-40 which seems to have an infinite number of uses. Here are only a few of them: Attract fish. When sprayed on fishing bait, WD-40 covers up the scent of human hands on the bait to better lure fish, according to USA Today. The WD-40 Company receives hundreds of letters from consumers confirming this use, but prefers not to promote WD-40 as a fishing lure since the petroleum-based product could potentially pollute rivers and streams, damaging the ecosystem. Cure Mange. While spraying a dog with WD-40 gets rid of parasitic mites, according to USA Today, the WD-40 Company, feeling that the potential misuse of the product is too great, refuses to condone using WD-40 to cure mange on animals. Prevent squirrels from climbing into a birdhouse. Spray WD-40 on the metal pole or wires. Remove a ring stuck on a finger. Several medical journals claim that WD-40 is the perfect cure for a toe stuck in the bathtub faucet, a finger stuck in soda bottle, or a ring stuck on a finger. Remove chewing gum, crayon, tar, and Silly Putty from most surfaces. Spray on WD-40, wait, and wipe. Zipper won't zip? WD-40 will let it zip again. Clean decorative snow from windows. Spray windows with WD-40 before spraying with artificial snow so the decorative spray will wipe off easier. Prevent dead insects from sticking to your car. Spray WD-40 on the hood and grill so you can wipe bugs off easily without damaging the finish. Make hangers glide over a clothes rod. Spray WD-40 on the clothes rod so hangers can be pushed back and forth easily. Clean clogged spray paint can nozzles. Remove the nozzles from the spray paint can and the WD-40 can, place the nozzle from the spray paint can on the WD-40 can, give it a couple of quick squirts, and replace both nozzles. Remove oil spots from driveways. Spray with WD-40, wait, then blot. The mineral spirits and other petroleum distillates in WD 40 work as a curing agent. Thread electrical wire through conduits. Spray WD-40 on the electrical wire to help it glide through winding conduits. Prevent grass clippings from clogging up a lawn mower. Spray WD-40 on the underside of lawn mower housing and blade before cutting the grass. Clean sap from gardening equipment. Spray with WD-40, wait, and wipe clean. Prevent mud and clay build-up on bicycles. Spray the bicycle with a thin coat of WD-40. Remove baked-on food from a cookie pan. Spray WD-40 on cookie pan and wipe clean. Then wash with soap and water. Remove dirt and grime from barbecue grills. Remove the grill from the barbecue, spray with WD-40, wait, and wipe clean. Then wash with soap and water. Remove chewing gum from the bottom of a shoe or sneaker. Spray on WD-40, wait, and pull the gum free. Keep dogs, maggots, and flies out of trash cans. Coat the trash cans with a thin layer of WD-40. Take squeaks out of new shoes. Spray WD-40 into the leather and shine. Remove grease stains from linen. Spray WD-40 directly to the stain, rub it in, let is soak for a few minutes, then wash through a regular cycle. Take squeaks out of a box spring mattress. Remove the fabric covering the bottom of the box spring mattress (by simply removing the staples), and spray the springs with WD-40. Staple the fabric covering back in place with a staple gun. Clean crayon from a blackboard. Spray WD-40 on the crayon marks, let soak for 10 minutes, then blot clean with a cloth. Free a tongue stuck to frozen metal in winter. Spray WD-40 on the metal around the tongue. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Gerry - WD40 is not the stuff to use. It is a Water Displacer and dries to gunk that is worse than the previously stuck condition. PB might be a bit better, or the acetone/transgendered fluid mixture. --R Dan wrote: I removed the release handle and found that the cable was disconnected. Re: [MBZ] OT: STOP robocalls
That's nuthin, try clawing back over $1200 in international long distance. I was cold-called by an ATT sales weasel and foolishly agreed to an international plan, but instead of getting the 5¢ per minute plan he talked about, I end up with a plan that charged roughly $1 per minute. Didn't pay attention to November and December's bills, which were debited directly from my checking, January rolls around and I finally take a look at the finances and H!#!? I immediately called ATT and thanks to God the lady was American. She was able to fix the January bill, but I would have to deal with managers about December and November. My next call was to my bank, once again I was blessed to speak to a native, this lady educated me on the exact phrasing of the spoken and written words to communicate to ATT to cancel the debit. That was key. Bank then reversed the December debit for me, once they had a copy of my communication with ATT as well as statement from me that I did not agree to the terms of the international plan that they charged. ATT would have to send me a paper bill, and I would thenceforth pay by my choice of means. ATT kept sending me bills for December, I only paid the current balance, and once per week or more I'd call to speak with a manager about it, and dutifully recorded their name and date and what they said they would do. After a couple months I finally got rather upset at a manager with whom I'd spoken several times who promised to refer the matter to suchsuch department but nothing ever came of it. The next month I get a notice from their collections department. I immediately called the collections number, dumped the whole story all over the collections lady, let her know the names and dates and promises from all the managers, and pointed out that I've been a loyal ATT customer for over 14 years and that they had made a huge profit on my account during that time. I said I was a very satisfied customer up until this issue, and intended to keep ATT, but if this matter was not resolved then I would have to find another service provider. She puts me on hold for about ten minutes and when she returns, December debt is erased, November is corrected as well, and the next month I had a credit of about $200. I've still got ATT, but I look VERY CLOSELY at those bills now. -Max On July 27, 2015 6:27:18 PM EDT, Rich Thomas via Mercedes mercedes@okiebenz.com wrote: So I finally got into the acct once they told me the login name, which I had forgotten. I can identify with this. While I like my S430, it’s completely soulless compared to earlier models. Other than the hood star there is nothing, and I mean nothing, that makes it stand out among other cars. As for crap I can’t say, as I haven’t had any issues with mine so far (knock on Zebrano or whatever it is they have in them now.) Mine was pretty well gone over by the previous owner and any issues addressed, so it’s in good working order with the exception of the parking brake, who’s release cable is screwed up somehow. I’ve been under the drive’s side dash twice to investigate, but for the life of me I can’t get close to the darned thing, there’s so much crap in the way. I’m just living with it, as much as it pains me. The car does run well and gets god gas mileage considering the size and weight. I pretty much get 20+ MPG a tank with about 50-50 mixed city/highway driving. It’s comfortable and has all the appurtenances you would expect in an S-class. It’s just not unique in any sense of the word. It might as well be a Ford Taurus in some respects.
