As I recall, $44K is very near sale price when new... ouch... Its one of
those cars that can only be driven with pointy toe shoes because that is
all you have room for in the foot well...
Good luck to the new owner..

Yes exactly. As a kid i used to watch my uncle throw that flywheel. My
grandfather had,a,cool 39 model B that you started on gas & when it got
warmed up you kicked the lever over & it ran on kerosene. Immediate belch
of black smoke then chugged along. I used to sit on his lap & beg him to

Re: [MBZ] New arrival at Okie Acres

2020-04-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I knew little of the older JD diesel tractors until one day when I was in the
generator business and we had a generator rental to deliver. When we did so
there was no way to get it off the Landoll trailer we had delivered it on. It
was a 350kW unit that weighed about 10,000 pounds. We sold it to a small dirt
track oval raceway outside of Muncie, IN that was going to use it to power
lighting for night races. This place was in the boonies and as a result did not
have the required three phase utility power available for the lighting.

So the guy goes running off and comes back a few minutes later with a guy
driving this old tricycle style John Deere with a big flywheel on the side. He
chains it up to the skid base of the generator, opens the throttle and drops
the clutch. This thing barely grunted while it drug a 10,000 pound piece of
equipment off the Landoll and across the grass to it’s resting place.

When I got closer and had a look it was a horizontal two cylinder with s stroke
that had to be measured in feet, or so it seemed. Had gasoline starting cups on
it, too. It was a really cool tractor.

Beware of leaking injectors or feed lines on JD's that have them inside

He would have been far better served buying an older, bigger JD with

horsepower (on paper), but in practice fairly underwhelming for a lot of
uses.

It's my brother's problem, now.

Stuff a clean, lint free shop towel or it’s equivalent into the opening. Clean
away.

I like brake cleaner for a job like this. It will soften or even remove the
remains of the old gasket and sealant, and it evaporates when done.

[MBZ] clean gasket removal on transmission

2020-04-29 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
I need to clean up the old gasket on my Honda Element tranmission (see
OT thread on the suspected bad solenoid) before I install the new
solenoid assembly.

I'm worried about getting any foreign material into the innards.

I have some gasket remover, but it's a spray and I don't see a great way
to keep it from overspraying into the the exposed guts without some
tedious masking.

A friend has a special disk for his die grinder, it's abrasive enough to
remove old gaskets but not grind away metal. I think it's this, or
something similar.

  https://www.amazon.com/3M-18733-Roloc-Bristle-Disc-Grade/dp/B01MSU3PYQ

It's nice for something like a water pump but the idea of a lot of paper
dust flying around an open transmission doesn't seem like a good
approach.

Any tricks of the trade for this?

No need to buy a remote starter switch. Save $20 and use a big
screwdriver from the battery cable on the starter to the solenoid
terminal.

Pick up a remote starter switch at FLAPS. Should be under $20. Mine has
come in handy several times over the years to bypass everything else and
verify that the starter solenoid and starter works.

Have you checked the transmission neutral safety switch? Try starting in
Neutral instead of Park, or wiggling the shift lever while you try to
start.

Re: [MBZ] Progress on the vexatious 05ML500 that has a lean but still (mostly) no joy

2020-04-29 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
So I got my daughter to turn the key while I put the voltmeter on the
solenoid wire (purple).  Nothing going to it.  H.

There is 12V to the starter.  That cable comes off the back of the
alternator from a cable that goes from the battery to the alternator and
they appear to be bolted together there on the back, so that is a direct
12V connection.

I moved some relays around again for the solenoid in the fuse box, I
could feel and hear the relay click but still no power to the starter
solenoid.  h.

I opened up the fuse box to see if I could see the largish purple wire
coming out of it at the bottom of the fuse/relay panel and going to the
solenoid but there was no purple wire.  I followed it from the starter
solenoid and it appears to go up over the engine in a harness that runs
along the injector rail and goes somewhere, I thought into the fuse
box.  But since I don't see it in there, I am now wondering if this switch

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/mercedes-ignition-starter-switch-ml320-ml350-ml430-ml500-ml55-amg-1685451004oe

might be bad.   "The ignition starter switch is used to activate the
main electrical system for your vehicle. A starter switch provides power
to the starter solenoid, electronic control unit (ECU) and ignition coil."

I guess that could be it as I am not sure if there is anything else in
the circuit that could be bad since the relay is clicking, and I
measured 12V across the relay socket.  I guess I could try a direct
jumper across that to see if any power is going to the solenoid, or to
see if the relay is getting power to trip it when the key is turned.
Have not done that yet.  I don't know if that relay sends power to the
ignition starter switch, but now I'm thinking it must as I did not see
the purple wire coming out of the fuse box so maybe it is coming off the
switch?

Tomorrow I will try to put power directly to the solenoid and see if
that energizes it and I can get this thing started.

ARGH!

I have been fooling around with this ML500 that I don't have a title for
as it has a lean.

Recall that when I first got it it was showing a Start Error and there
were various codes for this and that, which I cleared but it would still
show a Start Error but no new codes showed up so that did not indicate
much of anything. Thinking it might be the DAS ring I picked up another
one off an ML at LKQ last Saturday and swapped that in to see what might
happen. It was a different part number but same unit it looked, plugged
in fine. No joy, still a Start Error. So I put the old one back in and
gave it a go, no Start Error now (YAY!!!) now but still no cranking
either. Everything else lights up and whirs and clicks and makes the
right noises except the starter.

I've scanned it several times and no codes at all, everything looks good
in the various nannies so that is good. So at least the Start Error is
gone. There is a red light on the dash that blinks once or twice that
supposedly indicates the alarm has not disabled the car, and I could get
it to blink and stay solid using the fancy computer to trigger it then
go back to "normal" so that suggests it is not disabled. I saw no other
switches and events that would indicate that.

There were some suggestions I saw that indicated a coupla relays might
not be working so I checked those, swapped in other ones, I could hear
them clicking, power at various pins on the relay sockets were good and
the nannies said they checked out. Since I am seeing voltages at the
relays I have to conclude the ignition switch is OK as it lights up the
dash and the relays and such. I've also put good batteries in, voltages
are good, but nothing is cranking.

Turns out there is a 100A ceramic fuse on the positive battery terminal
that looks like the starter connects too, the fuse was good near as I
could tell, looked clean and fairly new. But maybe not, I was thinking
to clamp the cable directly to the terminal to see if that worked but
didn't yet.

So now I am thinking there must be a bad starter relay somewhere, if
there is one, that I am not seeing. Maybe on the starter? Only thing I
have seen is the small relay in the fuse box under the hood, which
appears to be working. Or the starter solenoid itself or the starter
has gone bad? I have not been under the car yet to see if there is
voltage going to the starter or to try to put power di

2020-04-29 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
FHA really screws you on PMI. Reason it went that way way DTI was too high
carrying both loans to qualify for conventional. Supposedly after showing
rental income for a couple of years that can be included in a refi so get out
of FHA. I just have not done anything about it yet. Within the next 2-3 years I
will probably either do that or sell the rental and pay this house way down. Or
maybe I will just sell all my junk, sell both houses and whatever cash I get
use that to pay cash for whatever I can get for whatever amount that ends up
being and not have a payment anymore.

2020-04-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Holy cow! You must have been a hell of a risk when that mortgage was
underwritten! Or is it because it’s an FHA mortgage?

On a $285k mortgage we put 5% down on ($300k sale price) our PMI is $83/month.
Even that’s a screw, as the house appraised for $315k. They would get their
money back and more if we defaulted.

That’s another reason for the refi, although a minor one. Get rid of PMI and
accelerate the mortgage. Cost about $1400 to buy down a point, that will get
amortized in no time flat. We pay biweekly on the current one and will do the
same on the refinance, too. That means two payments a year go directly to
principle.

If you have a lot of crap or unusual circumstances such as owning 80 cars it
makes it difficult to buy a new house while still keeping your existing house.
You have to have a while to move all of your crap out before you can put old
house on the market. We got lucky and were able to squeak by with 2 mortgages
so I could move all cars to new location. No way you could try to sell a house
while having that many cars.

2020-04-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That sucks. Sorry to hear that.

We just did a refinance on our new house because we went into with the bare
minimum (5%) to avoid tying up cash. Now that our former house has sold, we’re
rolling a good part of the proceeds into the new house’s mortgage and knocking
the rate down over a full point to 2.5% for 15 years. We applied and got
approved in record time, like three days. Mortgage guy said we would probably
not be able to close until mid May, as new home buyers get priority in the
closing queue.

New home mortgages must have tanked significantly, as our late May closing is
now next week.

Another interesting thing: Our mortgage company is requiring employment
verification within 24 hours of our closing and a questionnaire about COVID-19
issues that have Federal penalties if you misrepresent the answers. Wow.

The deal for the other house didn’t work out, so we’re staying put at least for
now. Since we don’t have enough income for another loan for the new property,
we either have to be able to do a rent/pre-occupancy deal while our house sells
or a contingent, bumpable buyer. With four dogs, and being both visually
impaired, we can’t be in limbo without a place to live. The seller’s lender was

income so she couldn’t more forward with the loan on her new property.

Looks like something Jay Leno would buy.

Was a little surpised that it appears to have a column shifter.

Sounds like you got an awesome deal on that E420! A used car of any era with
EVERYTHING working is a rarity, let alone one that is 25 years old! I finally
got some news on my 1982 240D that’s been in the shop since February. They are
wrapping things up, and it COULD be ready by the end of the week! It will be
nice to have Hilde back! My niece moved up here from California, and she’s
excited to drive it!

Re: [MBZ] Racism

2020-04-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I think it was far more common at the time. My paternal grandfather spoke
Greek, Italian, French, some variants of Serbian and Turkish as well as German
fluently. He used to ask us what language we wanted him to say the blessing
over dinner in. According to what he told me, when he was in school as a young
boy they taught several languages concurrently. This came out of a question
about how he learned German, since it wasn’t really a language that was from
around where he grew up. He said it was one of the languages they offered to
teach at the time so he took the class.

I had a coworker who spoke several languages fluently (English, German,
Spanish, Portuguese, Italian and French) that went with me to visit my
grandfather when we were on a business trip near his home. Fred was able to
converse with him in nearly all of the languages except Spanish and Portuguese.
It was pretty cool, I thought. My grandfather got a kick out of it as well.

Re: [MBZ] Racism

2020-04-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
I have my paternal grandfather’s citizenship certificate framed and hanging on
my wall. After he passed his wife (my step-grandmother) found it in his wallet,
folded up for nearly 50 years. She gave it to me and I had an archivist unfold
it and mount it between two panes of glass, them matted them.

It took him several months to unfold it. It’s in amazingly good condition
despite how it was kept over the years. The anglicization of his name is
documented on the back, as a Federal judge did it as a part of his citizenship.
He was Albanian, (Serbian/Slavic/Romanian) and as the run up to WWII was taking
place and people were being less and less “nice” to eastern
Europeans/foreigners he figured it would be a good idea to adopt his “new”
country on a permanent basis. I presume he was living on a green card or
whatever the equivalent was for many years.

Re: [MBZ] Racism

2020-04-29 Thread Clay via Mercedes
Take a peek at IMDB or other places that list biographic data about
individuals. Seems to be trendy to list your ethnic background. Down to which
brand of Judaism your line intermingled with. Even the pink people will list
down to tribal affiliation is possible, be it Welsh, Pict, Viking, Jute, Saxon,
or washed ashore drunk sailor.

The thread for those with roots in this hemisphere 400 years ago are tangled
with all manner of other interesting to make the tapestry we are today. This
enumeration of tribal affiliations seems to have been born out of needing to
specify that dark skinned people were out of Africa. To the point that US
tourists to Africa have been known to be racist to the point of referring to
the natives as African Americans.

As I race ever onwards towards that currently-oh-so-unfashionable "Dead
White Male" status, I more and more resent the "race" questions on various
official paperwork. Who the F* cares? Where's MLK Jr. when we need him?
These questions, and anything associated with them, are merely perpetuating
institutionalized racism, of which I want no part.

I usually decline to answer.

Re: [MBZ] Racism

2020-04-29 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
That’s my Dad’s side of the family. He was a first generation immigrant. My
paternal grandfather had his name anglicized when he applied for citizenship
just prior to WWII. He had been in the country since 1912. We don’t really know
how/where he came into the country other than he passed through Ellis Island
with his cousin Charles. I’ve gotten close and possibly found him in ship’s
registries, but there’s no sure thing that it’s him.

I’m sure an accomplished genealogist could get to the bottom of it, but to be
honest, no one really cares.

As an aside:

I see records coming and going from our medical examiner’s office that involve
efforts to identify next of kin. There’s a volunteer group that does research
for free for medical examiners all over the country to assist them in locating
the next of kin for people who have passed and have no information of such.

Seeing the amount a data and wide range of sources these people use to track
someone’s family members down is nothing short of amazing. It’s really pretty
cool.

These questions, and anything associated with them, are merely perpetuating

I have not been under the car yet to see if there is
voltage going to the starter or to try to put power directly to it.  I
don't even know where it is!  I guess I will have to look at that aspect
and see what else I can determine.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Then, run engine and watch for bubbles in radiator tank.. if head gasket is
leaking, engine compression overpowers coolant pressure and compression gas
 will bubble up...
If gasket is really leaking, the coolant will surge up the filler neck each
time you rev up the engine...
If it's a little seep leak, you will get bubbles...
If you have bubbles or surge... head gasket replacement...

I guess I am a dinosaur when it comes to things like this. Yes it was a
bit funny, all things considered, but why is it sad?

Are we really to pretend that we don't notice that people are different?
Ethnic minorities use it to their advantage and wave their proverbial
arms to be noticed when it suits them but we are not supposed to notice
otherwise?

Why is it "racism" when the young fellow tries to ask the young lady
about her family background. She is obviously Asian. She ultimately says
her background is Korean if my memory is accurate. Why is that an
improper issue? Why is she offended by his questions?  He did not swear
at her or in some manner try to put her down because she appeared to be
Asian. He just asked her what her family background was.

I am a mix of European, Scandinavian and British Isles. I am not
offended if someone asks about my family background. If an Asian, Indian
or African  person asked me where my family came from I would be happy
enough to tell them and would not be offended because their skin or
other physical features were different than mine and they happened to
notice it and ask me about it.

Racism used to be about hatred. Now it seems to have become whatever
someone slightly different than you thinks if you happen to notice that
they are different than you.

I guess I am a dinosaur when it comes to things like this. Yes it was
a bit funny, all things considered, but why is it sad?

Are we really to pretend that we don't notice that people are
different? Ethnic minorities use it to their advantage and wave their
proverbial arms to be noticed when it suits them but we are not
supposed to notice otherwise?

Why is it "racism" when the young fellow tries to ask the young lady
about her family background. She is obviously Asian. She ultimately
says her background is Korean if my memory is accurate. Why is that an
improper issue? Why is she offended by his questions?  He did not
swear at her or in some manner try to put her down because she
appeared to be Asian. He just asked her what her family background was.

I am a mix of European, Scandinavian and British Isles. I am not
offended if someone asks about my family background. If an Asian,
Indian or African  person asked me where my family came from I would
be happy enough to tell them and would not be offended because their
skin or other physical features were different than mine and they
happened to notice it and ask me about it.

Racism used to be about hatred. Now it seems to have become whatever
someone slightly different than you thinks if you happen to notice
that they are different than you.

[MBZ] Progress on the vexatious 05ML500 that has a lean but still (mostly) no joy

2020-04-29 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

I have not been under the car yet to see if there is
voltage going to the starter or to try to put power directly to it.  I
don't even know where it is!  I guess I will have to look at that aspect
and see what else I can determine.

Any other ideas or suggestions?

Re: [MBZ] Racism

2020-04-29 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I've been called racist for asking "Where are your people from?" which is
silly. My ancestors came to north America on the Mayflower, I'm 13th
generation. My people stole this country from the people who were already here
fair and square. My being interested in your ancestry doesn't make me racist,
it makes me interested...
Usually once I explain people get flustered. Then some of them like to tell me
everything. Its also interesting the people that have no idea, they've never
considered how they got here...

2020-04-29 Thread Allan Streib via Mercedes
We used to do the drive to the Clearwater Beach area in about 19 hours,
stopping only for fuel, food, and bathroom. Wouldn't do it these days,
I've got nothing against Florida but don't have any burning desire to go
there again either.

Re: [MBZ] Cheap 87 300D in Poosland

2020-04-29 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
Jacksonville to Miami is pretty much like driving the length of the state of
Maine from York in the south to Caribou in the north. The exception is that the
last hour north to Caribou is all 2 lane roads, the highway stops in Houlton...

People rarely understand this. Like they also don’t understand that it would
take a day to drive from say Pensacola to Miami. Like driving across Texas,
just greener.

Cranky seller - beware! If you ask for photos of the engine he will jack
up the price by $500.
