When I started to need visual assistance in the late '80s, I got a pair
of half-frame readers off a supermarket shelf. Those were my sole set of
spectacles for several years, until about '95, I think.

When I started needing assistance for distance vision I got lined
bifocals. since looking through half-frame readers for near vision
and over them for distance was definitely a lined bifocal.

I put in a 4-head unit with 2-12k and 2-9k heads, this was a few years ago, was
less than $3k for all the stuff. Not hard to install, I’ve done 3 systems now
with 8 head units. I kinda like these things and installing them.

Don’t forget running 30A power to the condenser units. You’ll need circuits and
cutoffs at the condensers.

I've only done 3/4 ton singles. You have more outdoor units, but they're
small and quiet. No problems with minimum BTUs being too high when you
only need to run one indoor unit at low speed. If there's a failure, all
the other units still work. And I don't recall a three ton with four
cassettes being any cheaper than four 3/4 tons. Biggest advantage to a
multi split that I can think of offhand is you only need one circuit
breaker to power it.

I'm considering mini-splits (probably a big not so mini four way one) as I have
hot water baseboard heat and window AC.

The windowsills are getting trashed from the window units, the house isn't
sealed well, and I have absolutely no intentions of ever giving up my baseboard
hot water heat, so my options are a central unit in the attic with holes in the
ceiling and heat loss through the ducting or mini-splits.

I'm thinking for 7 grand I can put a four split in, large unit in the living
room which will do the kitchen and my bedroom (converted porch with a brick
internal wall) and one each in the three bedrooms at the back of the house.
That would locate the exterior part near the electric service and no more than
15 ft from any of the interior units.

Cheaper than the metal shingles I put on a few years back.

Re: [MBZ] Chinese Red Death Flu

2020-06-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Had a neighbor who is a D.O. Had a local practice that a number of neighbor
people went to in a fairly upscale area. A good friend and neighbor’s wife went
and got her eyes checked and bought glasses, to the tune of like $800. Husband
of neighbor, also a good friend, swore out revenge when he found out what his
wife had spent on a single pair of glasses. He was livid.

The D.O. and her scumbag husband (another story for another day) used to have
all sorts of parties at their house. Holiday parties, Monte Carlo nights, etc.,
etc. with loads of food and almost always a big bowl of chilled shrimp. Husband
of neighbor attended every party they had, would pull a chair up in front of
the food table where the bowl of shrimp was, and proceed to consume nearly all
of the shrimp. He would then stand up, give his regards to the host and hostess
and others, and leave.

I kid you not, he did this for several years. They never understood what the
behavior was about, but everyone else knew. He swore he would get his $800 back
in shrimp.

The worthless couple has fled the neighborhood after they defaulted on their
mortgage and gutted the house just prior to the bank taking it over, and to
this day we still bug my neighbor buddy about plowing through the shrimp
whenever there’s a party.

As a side note, I went to this D.O. once. She did a good job with my Rx, but as
soon as I came out she had this high pressure gal who was ready to put me into
$500 designer frames before I got out the door. That’s the scam - they don’t
make much of anything on the exam, they make it all on the stupid expensive
markup on frames and add-ons.

That's how it's supposed to work.

A friend of ours recommended her optometrist to another, mutual, friend
and to Shirley and me.

The second friend and Shirley later had appointments with the optometrist
and got prescriptions for glasses. I took Shirley to Costco to have her
glasses made.

The second friend had her glasses made by the optometrist's office at a
rather high price. She went back later to complain she could not see very
well and was told by the optometrist he had been an optometrist for 38
years and did not make mistakes, so he would not fix her glasses.

This was Shirley's first prescription with prism, so I am thinking about
taking her some place else to be re-refracted to get a new prescription.

"No like", huh? Does that really describe your feelings toward them? :-)

I was looking briefly on the Internet for a picture showing the
distribution of focal lengths across the typical "progressive" lens
which I had seen before, but I couldn't find it.

I had thought the focal length was continuously variable from the
top-middle of the lens to the bottom, but such is not the case. There are
typically three central "zones" with progressively shorter focal lengths
as one goes from the middle-top to the bottom of the lens. There are also
two "zones" to the sides of the central "zones" which have a different
focal length for peripheral vision.

At some point I plan to put one here to replace our wall mount AC unit. I had
kind of planned to do it this year but with no pay increase and 6 weeks of
furlough all extra spending is on hold.
On furlough next week, doing brakes and some rust repair on the pickup. It had
been scheduled to get replaced this fall, instead its getting some fixin and
new tires. Should be able to run it a couple more years easy.

The master and slave cylinders arrived for the 240D. I guess I should get
that done. I’m really not looking forward to laying on my back under the
dash to remove and replace the master. Should I pinch off the line from the
brake reservoir to try to avoid a big mess inside the car?

It hasn't wanted to boot up for the last ten years or so, but I have a
Zenith Minisport HD with a 2 or 2.5" 20 Meg hard drive. Before that, I had
a Minisport with the 2" floppy drive in it. That was interesting. I think
I paid $30-40 for a ten pack of floppies. Bought it new for $400, sold it
in perfect condition for $200 when I bought the one with a hard drive and
an external 3.5" drive. IIRC the 2" floppies were 720kb, just like the low
density 3.5" were. There were also 8" floppies. I have one and only one
somewhere, I can't even remember what computer I was using that I had to
store my homework on 8". Maybe it was the CDC Cyber 200.

Right! - 3.5" floppies were WAY cool. I still have a Panasonic laptop that
boots from a 3.5" floppy of the 720KB size. My first use of a computer was
a CP/M machine that a friend loaned me for few months while it was between
his customers. I later got a VIC 20 with the tape drive. That lasted a
little while, but then I bought an 8080 clone PC that had a CP/M daughter
board for programing and running multi slide projector shows. It was a dual
5.25" floppy machine. I next traded a Mamyaflex C220 outfit for a Seagate
ST225 (?) 20 MB hard drive that replaced one of the floppies. I had a buy a
new BIOS chip to use it. DOS 1.2, IIRC.
I moved up to am IBM luggable, still 8080, moved the AVL daughter board to
it, and could now present and program on site multi-image shows. I was big
time then - the only AVL programmer in the OKC area!
Sorry, I don't remember the years - but it started sometime in the '80's.

Look around for folks that sell them... broker a deal with them to come and
install yours, and fix anything it needs...
If you have space in your shop for a 4 post lift and a two post lift
get one of each you will be glad you have them.
It is amazing how easy it becomes to do exhaust.. or rear ends.. or just
oil changes need to check that rattle.. put it on the lift and look and
shake 20 minutes later, done... fixed... Next !

Spend the money you will always be glad you did back pain gone
or less because you can raise the work to YOUR height... etc etc

Kaleb,
Yes, clamp off the line to the clutch master to keep from a big mess when
you disconnect the clutch master.
Replace both slave and master, then, open supply line.

And... get that damn car lift up and working hire somebody to install
it... you will up your volume of work by geometric scale NEVER lay on
your back again.. lift the whole car... brake jobs while standing.. or
setting in an office chair... Tool box rolled under the car so you don't

I think I would just bleed it out by removing the slave cylinder, then crack
the connection to the master to allow air in.  Remove the carpet from the
driver footwell if you can, put some rags inside to catch any drips.

2020-06-03 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Pretty much, although I’m not sure how “bad” is qualified. I can tell you that
most if not all of the online glasses places will replaced and fix any goofs in
the prescription for free. I had one with 39DollarGlasses a couple years ago
where I used their tool to determine my PID and it was off. I got it checked
at Costco and got the correct value and they sent me new lenses for my frame
with instruction on how to swap them out. It was pretty easy to do.

I will second Mitch’s point about having the glasses done by someone local.
When I got a pair of glasses from Costco a year ago the fitting made all the
difference. Out of the box they didn’t fit well, and the optician did their
bending/tweaking and afterwards they fit great. Costco can have some good deals
on glasses, and if you don’t go berserk on “designer frames” you can find some
good deals.

I had some made at Costco some years ago and I just could not wear them

optician/optometrist shop and they were much better.  I guess it depends

Not in my experience. I had progressive bifocals. They worked well as
long as I was looking through the center of the lens, in other words I
was directly facing what I was looking at. If I looked left or right
through the lens, things got progressively more distorted the farther
off-center I was. Contributing to this may also have been that my
prescription is fairly strong, so I had high-index polycarbonate lenses
to reduce thickness.

The scientific experiment would be to have a control group with no glove, code
the damage level to each group, then do a statistical analysis to determine
significance. My theory is that the gloved hands will show less damage.

Sometimes a scientific experiment is not required, like peeing on the electric
fence.

Also if you read to the last paragraph of the story:

One weakness of the trial, he added, is that because testing was not
widely available during the time of the trial, their analysis used a
combination of lab-confirmed positive covid-19 tests and symptoms to
count someone as infected.

So "infected and asymptomatic" was not distinguished from "not infected"

Prevention of infection is not the goal, prevention of hospitalization and
death from the infection, THAT is the goal.

Sounds like they moved the goal posts in order to get the outcome they

Are the progressive lenses truly usable over the entire surface of the
lens? Anywhere you look, there is a spot in the lens that will bring an
object into focus, regardless of the distance?
The no line bifocals I first got only had a narrow band that worked at the
top and another at the bottom. Otherwise the rest of the lens made
everything blurry.

My first use of a computer was in 1967 at Caltech. We used modified IBM
Selectric typewriters scattered across campus and connected to the
mainframe in the computation building. We programmed in a simple
adaptation of Fortran called Citran, which was easy and quick to learn
and easy to use (now why can't all computer languages be like that!). The
mainframe really drove those typewriters! It was interesting to watch the
ball jump all around to do the output typing. Unfortunately, the
Selectric's mechanicals were not up to the constant pounding and the
uptime was somewhat low.

That was followed up in 1968 at Hughes Aircraft in Culver City,
California, by my use of a teletype connected to a mainframe in downtown
Los Angeles to write BASIC programs. (In my student house at Caltech, I
used a teletype driven by the contacts of a sensitive relay which was
powered by the rectified audio of my shortwave receiver to read the news
headlines broadcast around the world).

My first owned computer was in about 1993, an IBM 80286 I used to
connect from my house to the mainframe in U.T. Austin's Applied Research
Laboratory to continue my work from home.

Buying internet bifocal/progressive glasses from China labs is not the way
to get well fitted spectacles. I assume yours came from a decent optician

So far all I've gotten from those sources is single visionreading glasses,
but as near as I can tell they did a decent job with the PD and spherical

For goodness sake, COBOL is a simple programming language. My first job
out of college was with a big consulting firm in Chicago. They taught a
group of 20-30 new hires (many without much computer experience) how to
program in COBOL in about 4 weeks and then we were shipped out, sitting
at 3270 terminals at a client site. They had many groups of fresh
college graduates coming through this process every summer.

It's not hard to learn for anyone with a programming background. But for
$400 an hour I am surprised there are not enough people willing to learn
it. The problem with COBOL is that it, and the programming problems it
is used for, are boring. Most COBOL programs read records from one file,
do something to each record, and write them to another file. Or they
print a report. After a while, the challenges are gone. Nothing new or
innovative is happening in the COBOL world. So it becomes boring and
feels like a dead-end.

If they are really paying $400/hr and accept remote work, I might look
into it though.

Yes, that's called nearsightedness, and it sounds like you've developed
some astigmatism as well. I can't read the big E, and can read without my
glasses. The correction for distant vision makes everything smaller, hence
even without the astigmatism correction, I see the smallest things better
without the glasses.

My issue for the last nearly 20 years is I can see fine up close but far off is
a blur like trying to read road signs or watch TV. Here lately I have noticed
if I am reading my phone or some sort of very small print I can see fine at mid
arms length but if it’s really small print that I have to bring close to my
face to see it I can’t read it very well because it’s now blurry.

Don't know. When the plea went out "NJ needs COBOL programmers!"
I looked long enough and deep enough to see they were asking for
volunteers to help with the "major overload". I stopped looking

I tried "lineless" bifocals when it became that time, and could not get
used to them. I had little issue with the traditional bifocals, and now
trifocals. I also had trouble working on things up close, and the
optometrist made a set of what he called "computer glasses" that are
bifocals but with the entire upper area the medium distance lens and the
entire lower half is the close-up lens. This gives a much larger and higher
area where you can see close things. I use them mainly for welding and
mechanicing now.

Wife is a former COBOL programmer from years (40?) ago. She’s in the midst of a
project converting systems over from COBOL environment. Lots of resistance from
the owners (COBOL people) even though most of them are on their way out the
door for retirement.

Atomic attack? COBOL and cockroaches.

[MBZ] ***SPAM*** RE: RE: Chinese Red Death Flu

2020-06-03 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Shortly after getting my first progressive lenses I had my first issues: First,
I went on an amusement park ride with the kids. It involved spinning sideways,
and the visual effect left me a bit nauseous. The second was worse. We were
camping up in BC in our travel trailer, dodging forest fires as often happens
in the PNW. We had trouble finding a spot, and I shoehorned the trailer into a
short spot with the rear wheels right at the edge of the overhang of the RV
pad.

But I forgot the long step to the ground from the rear door, and misperceived
the depth because of the new lenses. I cut a walking stick and limped the rest
of the trip, and got some x-rays when we got back to civilization.

I’ve never encountered any issues with perception since I’ve been wearing them.
Not sure if that’s more likely if the correction is for distance rather than
close up.

 Really? Ugh...
I was listening to the "Retro Computing Round Table" last night. This topic
came up and they espoused that its not the systems themselves being bad that's
the problem its that the people tasked with maintaining them were laid off
years ago. Those systems have run for decades basically untouched. They also
suggested that COBOL will be around for decades into the future, "COBOL will
outlive all of us."

When I finally let my doc write me for bifocals, I had him write 3 scripts
for single vision, bifocals and reading glasses. Bought the single vision
and two pair of internet readers. Biggest problem was in walking out of
the office with reading glasses on and leaving my only pair of good
glasses at work, when I didn't have a key to get back in.

Now I mostly wear the bifocals, but during tax season I keep the single
vision glasses in the car and a pair of readers in the desk. When I start
work at 8am, I'm usually ready to switch to dedicated readers by 1pm, but
a couple times this past winter I made it through a whole day on the
bifocals.

Yep. Be very careful too of walking, climbing stairs, uneven terrain as I find
I have little peripheral vision to the lower quadrant. I’m always tripping over
stuff as I’m not registering depth too well. I think that contributed to me
breaking my leg, I did not have a good sense of the ground when I was playing
