Agree and agree!

SWMBO absolutely agrees regarding military training. She worked in the pilot

Both things can be true, IMO.
Military training is (IMO) why US airlines have better cockpit crews than other

My understanding is that one lady got sucked out up to her waist,
passengers pulled her back in, but she died later. I don't think anyone
else got sucked out. The first report (cabin crew report to flight deck)
of any bad news is almost always worse than reality, or interpreted with a
bias toward the worst case by the receiver, so "partially sucked out the
window" became "sucked out of the airplane".

Re: [MBZ] Costco Mobil 1 $26.99

2018-04-17 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Even the ESP stuff is fairly cheap, and saves the number of oil changes needed
if you go to extended intervals. Cars and mechanical work are expensive; IMO it
makes sense to spend a bit more for better performance under adverse conditions.

As far as quickie oil change places: When changing oil on a Benz or VW, I do it
from the top with the MityVac in much less time than spending that time waiting
in line to have some barely employable kid screw up my car. For the Powerchoke
I bring oil and filter to my indy and avoid crawling under the truck. He's a
real mechanic who finds and repairs things I would likely miss.

YMMV

Re: [MBZ] OT high achievement yesterday

2018-04-15 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I'm kind of like that too...I'm not afraid of heights as long as I can keep one
foot on the ground.

I had a tough time of it when I worked as a steamfitter-rigger on a powerhouse
in the Hudson Valley across the river from West Point. As a member of the "bull
gang" I often had to climb ladders like that with a chain fall over my
shoulders to hook up to a beam...crawling out on the beam to get it in the
right spot. I did become somewhat desensitized, but never liked it.

Subject: [MBZ] OT - Homeowner's Insurance WIN!

A month or so ago we were having a get together for the mother in law’s 80th
birthday. Wife is leaning back on the couch in the family room and notices a
stain on the ceiling Dang. Roof leak.

We had just had some really violent storms blow through, so we figured they
were the cause of the leak. Our house is just about 20 years old, so we knew
it was close to new roof time. We were hoping it would be another year or two
before we had to replace the roof, but this looked like it was going to force
the matter. Darn.

Understand that there is quite the cottage industry using software that closely
monitors the NOAA weather radars and will use GIS to extract exact addresses
under storm tracks and then send a compiled list of those addresses to
subscribers (roofing companies.) These fine folks take that information and
canvass the neighborhoods in an attempt to sell new roofs or repairs using the
homeowner’s insurer. Basically, they inspect the roof, manage the claim with
the insurer, and have the homeowner sign an AOB (assignment of benefits) so
that they are paid directly for the work. This isn’t a bad thing necessarily,
however, you’re now locked in to this contractor, like it or not, and they’ll
get the proceeds of your insurance payout regardless of what the work costs.

Anyway, I had avoided these people despite their presence in our area. I
checked with a couple of friends who had their roofs done recently and got
referrals for a couple of contractors.

One contractor came a few weeks ago, spent about 30 minutes on the roof, gave
me a quote and said that in their opinion there was little to nothing to
warrant an insurance claim. Bummer.

A day later I was talking to my insurance agent about getting an updated quote
on my homeowner’s insurance once the roof was replaced. By bringing the roof
up to current code (hurricane requirements) I would get a significant discount
in my homeowner’s insurance. I mentioned the leak and that I was getting
quotes for a replacement. He told me I should file a claim with my insurer.
After all, what’s the worst thing that could happen, right?

So the following Tuesday I was working from home and had already scheduled
another roofing contractor to come out and give me an estimate. The insurance
adjuster said he could come the same day. That works for me….

They both showed up at the same time. Not sure if this is good or bad.

So they’re both on the roof for a good 45 minutes. The insurance adjuster
comes down and inspects the interior of the house, checks out the stain on the
ceiling, etc. He finishes up and leaves.

The contractor comes down and sits down with me. He’s got a good 15 minutes of
video on his iPad showing me all of the damage and wear on the roof. He tells
me that he spent at least 30 minutes of his time with the insurance adjuster
showing him all the issues he found. Chalk marks all over the roof, lots and
lots of notes, this guy was super thorough. He gives me a quote and heads out.

Fast forward to Thursday of this week. I get a call from the insurance
company. They’re going to replace the whole roof! Woo-hoo! I have to believe
it’s due to the efforts of the contractor that went over everything in such
detail with the insurance adjustor. You can guess who got the job.

So in 2-3 weeks I’m going to have a new, hurricane rated roof at no out of
pocket cost. Nice. And my insurance costs are going to drop about 40%, too.

I have read that SSDs have a much longer lifespan, and are a lot faster to boot

Also, I too favor WD over the competition.

My solution was a NAS with a pair of red 4TB WD HDs. The cost for the WD

My boot disk and the second disk - used for backing up photos, etc. are almost
full. This is an older (9 years old) HP consumer box.

I'm seeing 4TB disks for reasonable prices, Seagate and Western Digital.
What have the rest of you experienced in terms of drive reliability/life?

I only have two drive bays in the case - seems inadequate today . . .

I'd hate to have to rebuild the box from scratch, with the licensing hassles
from M$ and Adobe, etc., but am also thinking of one of those HP workstations
Curt was recommending a few years ago.

the other 2 panels. The radio is an aftermarket jvc unit. The amp is missing in
the trunk but I have one and I think I can put the original system back

have some around but didn’t know if these might some be better. I appear to
have some vacuum leaks as well, ace appears to be defaulted to defrost.

The blue carpeting behind the jump seat looks a little odd ...

What is he trying to show in

What is the brownish discoloration of the white engine bay underneath the air

It looks like they put a 300D (with turbo) hood insulation on.

I was looking at those before I bought the ML. The Airmatic suspensions scared
me off. Apparently even just the parts cost is astronomical, and failure at ~
100 k miles seems to be fairly common, with "professional" repairs not always
successful.

An oven with a standing pilot might be nice to have, except in the summer when

But I have no problem with electronic ignition burners, they light with a match

I'm a bit surprised. I have had some unexpected good service from Whirlpool. I
bought a reduced price Gladiator brand toolchest that was missing a key. They
mailed me some free of charge. I bought an old commercial grade KitchenAid
stand mixer from CL that had a defective clip to hold the bowl in place. They
sent me a replacement part for free. I judged their customer service to be
above and beyond.

I wouldn't give up on them too fast.

In January I bought a Whirlpool induction cooktop, and know it's got issues.
Two of four burners are not working, display gives F47 code.

Prof. Google tells me the basic troubleshooting steps and then call for
warranty service (done), but now Whirlpool tells me the serial number I have
for my cooktop is wrong and so no warranty support for me until I get the right
serial number.

WTH!?! Using Whirlpools website instructions I confirmed that I'm looking in
the right place at the right sticker, but the support dude I spoke with
yesterday says the S/N should start with a letter, mine is all numbers.

I'm tempted to pull the suspect board(s) out and try re-soldering all the
joints.

OK Youse Guyz with M116/M117 experience:

Today I got back to that M116 that is not stuck, but won't turn over completely
on 2 pistons TDC. It turns about 330-345 degrees.

I cranked up the BIG compressor and blew air in the 2 offending holes, (plugs
out). Out of the one on the left bank pops..

Wait for it! ...

. ..

POPCORN!

Yep, yellow popcorn kernels.Coming out of the 3rd hold back on the
left bank.

The plugs and plug wires did not appear to be disturbed. The distributor was
out, presumably broken/bent in the collision, or possibly robbed shortly after
the accident.

HOW COULD POPCORN GET IN THE CYL IF THE PLUGS WERE NOT DISTURBED?

Presumably the only other way was through the open intake valve. The spring
loaded "valve" on the top of the engine (where the air cleaner covers the
intake) was in place, and there did not appear to be any popcorn there. I will
start to pull the stuff off the top of the engine tomorrow, to see if I find
any other clues.

When I cleaned the engine outsides, there was no popcorn evident.

Is there something in the engine valley under the fuel distributor that meeses
can chew through to store popcorn in the engine?

The big air horn appears to be intact. the air hoses appear to be intact. (in
all cases, as far as I can see with the top of the engine
assembled.)

I wonder if something similar to noise-canceling headphones could work to
generate anti-tinnitus sounds. One would have to tune them to individual
circumstances but the question is if the noise would cancel out whatever the
nerves or brain are doing, or if it would just add to the overall sensation of
more noise.

You are labeled a "denier" to associate you with holocaust deniers and thus to
label you as a nazi or nazi sympathizer. When this type of verbiage is used in

That's what turns a discussion about current events into an exercise of (the

Re: [MBZ] OT: Air fryers now Sous Vide

2018-02-02 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I first encountered sous vide done at a restaurant with a duck recipe. It was
great! I have since experimented quite a bit, using a simple setup involving a
cheap slow-cooker with a highly accurate temperature control device. It is
especially good for chicken breast, cooking perfectly and producing always
tender juicy results.

Using thickness, time, and temperature charts; meats can be pasteurized so they
can be refrigerated for several weeks and reheated/seared later. Excellent for
camping trips for instance.

Also really good for meats with lots of tough connective tissue. Low and slow
can be 24 hrs. or better for brisket or pork shoulder. Something like a
flatiron steak can be made tender but still rare. You have to be careful not to
make it too tender!

Yes, browning is necessary but can be done later with a quick sear on a cast
iron or steel pan, or with a torch.

Delve into food science a bit.

I was playing with the coolant in Allen. Thermostat seems to have failed open,
so it is as good a time as any to try to degrease and get the scale out of the
engine.

I could find only some tiny jars of citric acid, so am using some blue jug
descale thing that needs to live in the car for a few hours of road time. I
guess I can do that this week. I had flushed the old (which looked really
good) Orange antifreeze. Must have been Zerex, but I did not know just how
long it had been in, and the car has been mine for a year.

So, I have emptied, flushed to clear water, and am getting ready to put in the
descaling goop, when a german sounding woman came over to tell me how she liked
seeing Polei, and that I must surely be german, if I have that car. I am not,
but we chatted on about things and she inquired as to my opinion regarding
replacing her 2002 C class with another benz. I was not really supportive,
based on just how much of a pig the W220 was.

She purchased her car new, and it spent the first year racking up almost $8k of
service work, but has been fairly good over the past 15 years, with two other
expensive failures. I pointed her toward oriental cars. She asked after BMW,
which I could not fault, other than they are just as complex, expensive, and
maybe no better than the C class for initial quality.

The best I could say was to avoid the local dealer, and try one about 20 miles
away, as the newer shop might not be run by scum, the way the SEA dealer is.
It could be that the new C is better than the millennial S.

The $50,000 to $60,000 peekups with all the "luxury" trim/interior such
as the frod "platinum" "limited" "SVT Raptor" and "King Ranch" are
what I classify as wussywagons. They are not meant for work, but to
show off the owners wealth or to stroke the owners ego, or to satisfy the wife
while doing one of the former.. The "platinum" is definitely trimmed to sell
to the female market. To be fair, pretty much all cars, MB included are
targeted at the female market. There may be some argument about the king
ranch, but with a price tag over $50,000, leather steering wheel cover, heated
seats, etc, it definitely has options that fall into the wussy category. Each
of these would be competing with a MB/nissan pickup.

I am not picking on frod, because GM, dodge, toada and nissan all offer
products with similar fru-fru. I am more familiar with their trim levels.

When you compare the $50k-60k wagens to the $27k ford F150 XL, can you honestly
tell me a "limited or "platinum" is worth twice as much
money? Will they get twice as much MPG? Will they last twice as
long? Will they carry twice as much? Do they have some combination of the 3
that justifies being worth twice as much?

The gummit meddling in the vehicle market has driven people away from cars and
into peekups. The carmakers are not stupid. they are just capitalizing on the
weaknesses of people and what their gummit has taxed/regulated them into.

Their route takes them straight past a 479-foot tower which was located on the

area, flying near obstacles up to 587 feet. They are flying 200' below the
tallest buildings in their area.

When the flight crew was asked if they received training for incidents like
this they replied that an incident like this could not be trained and for that
reason they did not receive such training.

The investigation revealed that the relevant Atlas Blue and Royal Air Maroc
manuals contained all information needed for situations just like this serious
incident. The training manuals contained general guidance needed to address the
incident in a structured manner and the QRH and FCOM contained all relevant
procedures that would have been needed to address the actual damage.

Despite this the flight crew was convinced that they had encountered a
unique occurrence.

[MBZ] Costco Double Attaboy

2018-01-08 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I spotted this item at Costco last week:

https://www.amazon.com/ProSensor-Professional-Finder-Built-Bubble/dp/B0195K8OT4/ref=sr_1_3?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1515459155&sr=1-3&keywords=prosensor+710%2B+professional+stud+finder

and coincidentally I helped my son on Saturday to install some Ethernet wall
plates to go through a couple of walls, needing a stud finder to find the right
location to cut through. I got the picture that he could really use a
studfinder, and I lusted after the really nice one at Costco, for about HALF of
the Amazon price ($29.99 vs. $54.95)!

So as I was looking for a parking spot in the Costco lot, a guy in a Costco
jacket was running after me. I rolled my window down, and he told me to drive
over to the tire area so he could air up my low tire he had spotted. When I
did, I saw a nail head in the center of the tread. He said it would take a
while to repair, and they would call my cell when it was ready.

I went into the store, found my stud finder, then browsed their books. I found
a copy of a Mitch Rapp novel I have on my Kindle that I had been planning to
read. I found a nice leather recliner and got a good start on the book before
they called.

So, attaboy for taking the trouble to chase me down, attaboy for having a nice
product at a much lower price than Amazon.

The difference between extenders and mesh is that with mesh you (theoretically)
do not lose bandwidth. The mesh system uses an additional 5 GHz band to

service, so I now have the extender in the detached garage providing WiFi for
the surveillance camera that watches the bird feeder. It works great and was
simple to setup. I don't know that it qualifies as a mesh network, but it does
provide solid WiFi at a distance.

2700 sq. ft. home with 6 levels. I needed it because I got the Ring doorbell
and my old router would sometimes fail to connect the doorbell requiring
setting it up again. Also, the house is in a low spot adjacent to the creek, so
cell coverage is very poor without wifi. Never had that problem since. I got a
substantial discount from Amazon warehouse deals. The "defects" were some
smudges on the surfaces which wiped off completely with a damp cloth.

Costco recently had a 3 unit system at a typical Costco price, IDK if they
still offer that.

Anyone here done a mesh wifi network in their house with an Eero or similar

I’m giving it some thought as a replacement for the dual band wifi I currently
run that just barely covers the whole house.

That reminds me:

FROZEN FANNY

During the winter of 1973-74, when I was on a B-52H combat crew at
Kincheloe AFB, MI, the co-pilot and I attended a dinner party with our wives at
the Officers Club one evening while on alert. Because I was going to be inside
the club building for three or four hours, I had removed my thermal underwear,
and was wearing only my cotton under shorts, T-shirt, Nomex flight suit, and
street shoes and socks. While traveling from the alert facility to the club
and back, I also wore a flight parka with a hood (waist-length heavy coat) and
gloves. As usual, we had additional cold weather clothing on the aircraft we
could don if we were suddenly called upon to fly during this time. On this
particular day, as on many days in the Michigan Upper Peninsula, it had snowed
hard all day.
Arriving back at the alert facility after the party, our crew-cab truck got
stuck in deep snow near our parking space, and as we tried to free the vehicle,
one of the snow chains came off a rear wheel. Using snow shovels, the co-pilot
and I worked for several minutes to remove snow from beneath the vehicle and
reinstall the chain.
After we had finally parked the vehicle in the appropriate space, we went
inside the building, where a movie was playing in the briefing room. I stepped
inside the briefing room, stood and watched the screen for a couple of minutes,
then took a seat on the front row to watch the rest of the movie. As I sat
down, though, I suddenly felt significant pain in the buttocks area - I had
frozen my buttocks!
While I shoveled snow and reinstalled the chain, my thin flightsuit and
under shorts were pulled tightly across my buttocks, which were elevated to the
full fury of the blizzard as I bent to the task. The skin on my buttocks came
off like sunburn, and the area itched slightly for years. So, you see, I
literally froze my fanny off for Uncle Sam, and no, I did not claim a Purple
Heart for it. Oh, by the way, I never stood around scratching the itch, either
- I simply endured it.

On my W123 300TD, I am having a hard time getting it started when the
temperature dips below 20 F despite the car being plugged into the block
heater. It takes 2 minutes of multiple glows and attempts before I can get it
fired up. Once I get it started the engine runs as if it were preheated.

Question: Does this sound like a glow plug issue? Do the plugs wear out or
simply fail? If one is dead will the other 4 start the car, albeit laboriously?

OK, folks, I’ve got a classic mail fraud/bank scam going and I want to know how
you think I should proceed. No guarantees, but I’ll be looking forward to some
creative responses. Here’s the setup:

I have a Casio electronic piano for sale on Craigslist for $449.00.

I got an email from a potential buyer named “Emma”. Emma wanted to buy my
piano for her fiancé, but she’s not going to be in town until the end of the
month. She said she would send me a check for the piano and some additional
money to give to the movers who would come and collect it for her.

I gave her my street address and name.

Today a cashier’s check drawn on Comerica Bank for $1600.00 showed up in a
Priority mail Express envelope.

I called Comerica to verify the authenticity of the check. It’s bogus. The
check was drawn on a Comerica branch in San Jose, CA and dated for the 20th.

The Priority Express envelope was mailed from Mesa, AZ.

I have not contacted “Emma” about the check yet, however, if I go silent I
suspect she’s going to reach out to me. My first thought it to take this to
the USPS and let them deal with it, as Postal Inspectors can always use
something to do. Then again, as this is the classic “I’ll give you extra money
you can give to someone else” ploy I wonder if I should string her along
somehow…

Another one that has occasionally worked for me is to go to the manufacturer's

It’s like any online venue - you have to shop smart. A good example:

I wanted a bench mat with a Walther PPQ exploded view on it, a common pistol
sort of thing that’s handy to have for a number of reasons. Here’s how they
priced it:

Prime: $11.00

Other sellers: $7.00 and up

In most cases, the “other sellers” are adding shipping costs on top of their
prices, making Prime a better deal since shipping is “free”. In this case, a
third party seller had the mat for around $8.00 with free shipping. Sure, it
came First Class or some other slow boat method, but I wasn’t in a hurry.

Net gain over the river of big women? About $3.00. Add to that the seller was
from out of state, so I also dodged the state sales tax on the mat as well, so
I really did better than just the difference.

A lot of people never drill down into the “other sellers” sections and see the
better deals. Another place you can make out well is their “warehouse deals”.
These are the scratch and dent/returns sort of things they offer. I’ve done
well on two things there recently:

$130 metal gun cabinet - $72.00 on a warehouse deal. Had “less than 10%
damage”. It had a ding on the back of the cabinet that I knocked out with a
deadblow hammer and a two by four. Heck, it was on the back - I’ll never see
it!

$12.00 pop-up sprinkler head. Got a brand new one from their warehouse deals
for $3.00 shipped. Sprinkles as well or better than the new one.

Re: [MBZ] OT- Fun With Guns Today

Yes, lower recoil than metal frame of the same weight, because the polymer
seems to absorb some of the recoil. Of course you are correct that more weight
reduces felt recoil. The reliability is not per se the result of using polymer,
but overall modern engineering and construction.

Wait, the polymer has higher reliability and lower recoil??? I'd expect more
wear and lower mass = more recoil.
I've never held a polymer gun, much less fired one, though I did love the

Re: [MBZ] OT- Fun With Guns Today

2017-12-10 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I agree that the M1911 is a beautiful bit of engineering and a rugged beast. (I
sure should have bought that Singer M1911 that a buddy tried to sell me for
$100 back in the day.) Wonderful to take to the range for a bit of fun. But
carrying it on your hip all day every day will make you love plastic for its
reliability and lighter weight. My H&K USP Compact is just as powerful in .40
S&W and more pleasant to actually carry. Polymer cuts recoil a bit too.

Is the Hogue wood? My experience with Pachmayr rubber grips has been very good.
I have some on a T/C Contender pistol that really tame the recoil, as well as
weld to the hand! Nice when you're approaching rifle ballistics in a pistol.

Sorry.

Para Ordnance 1911 Expert Stainless .45 ACP.

My Walther PPQ is a 9mm. Seems pretty tame compared to the 1911 .45 ACP.
Amazing to me that it’s such a difference. I love shooting the 1911. It seems
so much more of a firearm than the polymer framed pistols. A “Man’s Pistol”,
if you know what I mean.

I asked Santa for a Hogue wrap-around grip for it. That will make it even
better.

I was wondering if brass or bronze washers would reduce the friction much

About a month ago, I ordered a bunch of stuff from Amazon. When I started to
check out, it wanted me to 'try Prime'. I hit the OK button thinking it was a
free trial. It wasn't.
I realized my mistake and canceled the Prime subscription, and made my order
with free super saver shipping. That was on a Monday. They started shipping
stuff the next Monday.
I assumed they were punishing me for the Prime cancellation.
This Wednesday, I ordered a couple of things. Free shipping.
It's Saturday and they haven't shipped yet.

Stuff from Amazon or fulfilled by Amazon always used to ship in a day or two.
Are they now deliberately holding shipments for a week if you don't pay for
better service?

2017-12-03 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
LEO training and qualification varies a lot. My requirements were quarterly
qualification with a reasonable level of difficulty, with some units receiving
"practice ammo". IIRC NYPD was annual, and little in the way of resources
provided. I recall qualifying at a range when NYPD were transitioning from
revolvers to pistols. I was watching them during a break, and they were doing a
string involving a reload. It took them FOREVER, much longer than it took me to
reload a revolver. Unless they shot on their own time their skill level would
have been...not too good.

Everyone at mine had fired a gun, but they did ask, which was a little
disconcerting to me. What I did find mildly humorous was that the guy sitting
next to me, who was a fairly new corrections officer, had to be shown proper
hold and stance. Not sure what kind of training these people get, but from
what I saw I wasn’t impressed. Looked like he had been taught the Weaver
stance, which I thought was outdated and out of favor compared to the isosceles
stance.

I was always taught that in the case of personal protection the Weaver stance
was a bad thing, as it made the shot from a perp a line through both lungs and
the heart (center of mass.)

I assume a person could take the concealed carry class even if not qualified
for a CCL/P. Here (NC) one must take and pass the concealed carry class as a
prerequisite to even apply for the CCP.
I was always understood that 2A applied only to citizens. But I reviewed the
100 citizenship test questions recently and they implied 2A applies to all US
persons irrespective of citizenship. The new (2016) ATF 4473 implies US
citizenship is not mandatory; I think it was mandatory on the old form. Maybe
an Obama administration change. So I'm unsure.

Re: [MBZ] no Ingles, some details

2017-12-02 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
1. Apparently the prosecution conducted some forensic analysis on the recovered
bullet as well as the pier concrete, and found evidence that the bullet that
killed Kate had indeed ricocheted off the pier.

2. The weapon was a Sig P239, which is available in several calibers and 3
flavors: DA/SA, DAO, and "DAK trigger system developed for law enforcement" I
believe the DAK Sig is the one my son owns, a twin for his USCG duty weapon. It
has a 6.5 lb. long trigger pull, hardly a hair-trigger which could be readily
discharged by accident.

3. It is likely that as a federal LEO, the agent had authorization to carry
either his issued duty weapon or a personally owned firearm. I have had 6
different personally owned handguns over the years with written authorizations
for on and off duty carry. I am sure none would have been allowed with a
lighter than original trigger pull. The last was a DAO H&K. In recent decades
the authorized weapons went to DA only to decrease the possibility of
accidental discharge and subsequent liability. Thanks lawyers!

Interesting posit. Just where did you find this tidbit of fact. Since the
Defense Lawyer made the claim "the gun had a hair trigger and he didn't intend
to shoot her", but I find no information about a ricochet shot as being the
killing wound.
Since the weapon was stolen from a police car, the likely owner was a
policeman, No LEO's carry weapons with "hair triggers" because if there is a
"shots fired" incident, the first claim by opposing lawyer representing the
deceased criminal would be the cop used a weapon "reworked" to establish the
cop is a "premeditated killer"... so NO police department armorer will set a
trigger at less than 3 lb pull..

I do however find first person evidence by the young woman's' family members.
who were with her at the murder, who stated the "alleged killer"
walked up to her and shot her, point blank.

AG Sessions has stated that DOJ is considering what charges he is eligible for,
and wants to seek the maximum penalties for such charges. As someone who has
reentered several times after deportation, he has violated 8 U.S. Code § 1326,
and is eligible for anywhere from 2-20 years per count, depending on what class
of crimes were committed for which he was deported.

After serving his back-to-back sentences, he would again be deported (if he

If they are US citizens or Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) they are eligible
to purchase and possess firearms unless otherwise disqualified. I have some
concerns if their "translator" actually may have answered the questions on the
written test. There can be US citizens who do not speak any English, for
example persons born in Puerto Rico, born in the US but raised elsewhere, or a
naturalized citizen over a certain age who is exempt from the language
requirement.

Language ability per se should not be a bar to a license

I took my concealed weapon permit class today, which is a requirement in
Florida to obtain a concealed carry license. In the class of five people there

They passed the test, both written and practical (firearm handling/firing).

Because they did not have a command of English and it was clearly not their

We ran with porcelain countertops in the kitchen. Hard on dishes but you can

I wanted to use phenolic laminate, but got voted down. Like the high school

I remember reading that the eastern coy-wolf originated in Algonquin Park in
Canada and spread rapidly, having superior survival qualities.

Here in Vancouver WA we have coyotes as neighbors, also cougars. There have

are becoming more common in Oregon. There was a recent case of a hunter

Coyote could become the wolf of the East CoastPublished: Friday, November 17,
2017

Coyotes might need to become the "wolves" of the East Coast to survive.

Coyotes in the East are actually a mix of coyote, wolf and dog, which is why
they tend to be bigger than their counterparts in the West.

The carnivores has expanded their territory in the past 80 years, and their
wolflike traits are helping them thrive on the East Coast, according to
scientists.

But humans will have to coexist with these increasingly wolflike creatures,
researchers said.

"We now have a novel, large canid to take over that new role," said Robert
Crabtree, chief scientist of the Yellowstone Ecological Research Center.
"The right size is going to be selected for us by biological evolution itself."

The coyotes might become more effective predators, which could be bad news for
deer. Ultimately, it could mean that the coyote becomes the top predator on the
East Coast (Patrick Whittle, Associated Press
,
Nov. 17).

trial

Yet another reason to be glad you ive in the US of A.

Singer jokes about the Nile, now will stand trialPublished: Thursday, November
16, 2017

Famous Egyptian singer Sherine Abdel-Wahab is charged with incitement and
"harming the public interest" after joking about the Nile River during a
concert.

While onstage, the singer said drinking from the famous river can cause
schistosomiasis, a water-borne infection caused by parasitic worms.

"Drink Evian, it's better," she quipped.

The video, taken last year, recently went viral online. Lawyer Hany Gad filed
suit, claiming the comments insulted the Egyptian government. Now she must
stand trial next month, judicial officials said yesterday.

The Egyptian Musicians Syndicate has also announced it is banning Abdel-Wahab
from performing, due to her "unjustified mockery of our dear Egypt," and
ordered radio stations not to play songs by the hit artist. The organization
has vast power over Egyptian media. Its board can issue warrants for crimes,
conduct searches, make arrests and help prosecutors in cases.

Abdel-Wahab apologized in a Facebook post yesterday.

"I don't remember saying that, because of course I don't mean it — this is not
what I mean to say about my country," she wrote. "God knows how much I love
this country and am dedicated to it. ... I promise to be more wary in the
future of any naive mistakes that could put me in such a regretful position."

The Egyptian government has run a prolonged crackdown on dissent, jailing
thousands for criticizing the state.

She is not wrong about the river. The parasite has plagued Egypt for decades,
and the government debuted a multimillion-dollar project last year to get rid
of the worm (Samantha Schmidt, *Washington Post*
,
Nov. 16). *— NB*

Have you done any "ball and dummy" drills? Load a mag with some live rounds and
some snap caps. See what happens when the snap cap is in the chamber when you
pull the trigger. This reveals a lot of technique errors.

Also, not having your wrist joint in a direct line along the axis of the barrel
will flip your shots to the side.

Good point. I need to do the same with my shotguns, too.

I’m not aware of the front sight moving when I pull the trigger, but I’m
figuring it must as when I shoot from the bench I’m hitting my aiming points.
That’s why I’m thinking it’s a trigger issue. And BTW, I’ve got a package of
the diagnostic targets. Had them for a while, just didn’t need them (until

I had skipped heart beats, tightness in the chest etc. That prompted a referral
to cardiologist. They put me on a monitor for a couple of days that I wore
around, which found noting. Of course all of this led me to cutting carbs to
lose weight. So anyway they then set me up for a stress test which I did last
week. Today was my follow up. It came up positive. There was some irregularity
which long story short, I have any appointment next week for a cath, or
whatever they call it. The will see if they find any blockage and fix it if
they do. This is just great. I am way too young to be having these sorts of
problems.

2017-11-11 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
This is some info using a more practical standard:

https://www.statisticbrain.com/driver-fatality-stats-by-auto-make/

It still makes the ML look very good by comparison to some other vehicles. The
"E" class is in the same ballpark.

They beat the worst cars by a factor of about 10!

That's a better feature IMO than good fuel economy.

Re: [MBZ] OT - Next Pistol Purchase

2017-11-09 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I carried a M92 daily for several years (the double action only (DAO) version
called the "Brigadier". It works, it is pretty reliable, but I did not love it.
I have also carried a Glock 19 and an HK USP Compact in .40. My preference
would be for the Glock or H&K. If you want self-defense capability, I recommend
the .40 greatly over the 9.

Also, size and weight are a detriment to concealed carry. It's a lot more
pleasant to carry something lighter weight. I believe that the polymer of the
Glock and H&K help to absorb recoil. I worked with some agents who worked
anti-narcotics in the jungles of South America, and they claimed that the
anti-corrosion finish on the steel parts of the Glock resisted corrosion much
better than others' stainless pistols. IME the Glock 19 had annoying snappy
recoil with 9 mm +P+ ammo, but handled nicely with regular 9 mm ammo.

I think recovery for subsequent shots is faster and more natural with the Glock
or the H&K than with the Beretta.

As far as grip is concerned: a consistent grip is a critical part of accuracy
with a handgun. Revolvers tend to have a more rounded grip which lends itself
to more consistency. A pistol (semi-auto) requires more practice to achieve the
same level of consistency.

I would rate the Glock easiest to shoot well, followed by the H&K, with the
Beretta last.

Is it one of the “switchblade” types of key fobs? Those are the ones that are
NLA at this time, although my dealer says that there are efforts being made to
put them back in production but they’re not sure when.

If it’s one of the teardrop shaped ones you’re good.

Depending on the type (metal or plastic) a replacement will set you back
$150/$200. I just bought a plastic one for my W210 wagon, and it was $140 with
my discount.

So I got a Fisher and Paykel Brevida last Friday after the talk here about
nasal pillows when Kleb got his CPAP. Told my DME rep that I wanted something
small in hopes it wouldn't dislodge as easily in the night, and that's what she
gave me.
The display mask fit great, I wore it for about 5-10 minutes while we talked
and she got a new one for me. Unfortunately, she fitted the display mask to me,
not the one she sent home with me, so I had to read the instructions and try to
get it to fit. The instructions said to wear it loosely, but the headgear has
two straps about an inch apart and it's not very secure, especially when loose.

Finally used it last night, tightened the headgear one notch at a time until it
quit leaking, but still woke up a couple of times with it leaking and had to
reposition it.
Nostrils were slightly sore when I woke up but the feeling went away within and
hour. I'm sure I didn't have it too tight, but it might have been too loose.

Should I give my nostrils a rest tonight, or wear the pillows mask again?

Mitch.

Re: [MBZ] Hello

2017-10-29 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I was up at 0400 yesterday to take the son, DIL, Pomeranian, Newfie, and a
crapton of luggage to the airport for their move to Honolulu. The ML320 (Benz
content!) did not have adequate space for all their stuff, so I took the F250
crew cab powerchoke (diesel content!!). The son has gone from USCG reserves to
active duty and will be serving on the new Cutter "Kimball" as the lead of
their Maritime Enforcement unit. So I slept in a bit this morning.

I am drying some of the 2 1/2 lbs. of Chanterelles I bought a few days ago and
searched for and found an extra power supply for a ThinkPad to replace the one
the DIL lost at TSA yesterday. It'll go out priority mail tomorrow.

Cooked a couple of eggs on the new black steel pan I received and seasoned
yesterday. Worked as well or better than Teflon even though the seasoning was
quick and dirty on the gas grill! As advertised, it seems better than Teflon or
cast iron.

one for a Chevy pickup and one for a Buick sedan (I don't recall what years

shows them separately and the Buick filter is much more expensive than the
Chevy filter. My father asks why and is given some weak excuse, so he tells the

Re: [MBZ] OBD2 tool

2017-10-24 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
I bought this one a while back, and IMO the proprietary data is worth the extra
$. You get one manufacturer's code set free with the hardware. In the case of
MB it covers MB, Sprinter and "Smart".

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N0QQZY7/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I used it on my inspection of the ML320 I bought, and the PO was looking at all
the codes I pulled while I was checking. At dealer prices to overcome the
codes, it scared the PO enough that I was able to negotiate a substantial price
reduction.

The service records indicated a 9 year old battery, so I thought low voltage at
startup might have caused some codes. A new battery... and the codes were
gone!!!

Poos posted something about this tool, $34 from China on ebay, comes with a
bunch of cable connectors but it might take until the next decade to show up.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2017-Bluetooth-TCS-CDP-Pro-Plus-for-autocom-OBD2-Diagnostic-Tool-8PCS-Car-Cables-/302458929502?epid=927794844&hash=item466bf5015e:g:Z-gAAOSw7GRZBvbe&autorefresh=true

I was reading the BW forum and see this.
http://www.benzworld.org/forums/w210-e-class/2823906-need-clarification-obd2-reader-w210-4.html

which I guess says you only need an OBD scanner, not a 38-pin thingie which
maybe deals with the other stuff in the car. I have a basic HF OBD dongle
reader that works fine on my trucks etc, would that work (realizing I should
just go try it, but I am having lunch at the dumpooter now so I thought I would
lazily ax)? Is the Benz OBD just throwing codes (and will my dongle read
them?), I could then look them up?

On Amazon what appears to be the same device, minus all the adapters and gender
menders is $60.
https://www.amazon.com/Fabal-Bluetooth-Truck-Diagnostic-Silver/dp/B07476L15C

So now I'm also wondering if one of those cheap bluetoof things that talk to a
phone would also work, they are only a few $$ from Banggood or DX, what is
special about this particular device? Plus it looks like whatever S/W it has
only runs on flavors of winders if you want to use USB or even bluetoof I
guess, which is annoying. I think I could use a standard app on either the
ifone or an android, which are readily available for a few $$.

What should I do (besides going out to try the scanner I have to see if it can
read the codes on the 99 E$500D).

Just to complicate things further...my cardiologist says to avoid carbonated
beverages because of their effect on blood chemistry. I do not claim to
understand the mechanism of this.

I mostly stick to icewater with the occasional beer or San Pellegrino pop (no
HFCS, light on the sugar).

a. As directed - before eating
b. At bedtime
c. At 4 AM when the GERD attacks.

[MBZ] Titlesfax Scam

2017-10-17 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
My son is trying to sell his 2015 RAV4 on CL. So he gets a guy who says you
have to provide me with the records on the car because my bank requires it and
they will only accept the report from Titlesfax.com. We had never heard of this
outfit and the story sounded...more than a little...fishy. A search came up
with nothing about the company except a CL ad out of Spokane saying that anyone
requesting this is a scammer.

A "whois" gave the information that the domain was registered 4 days ago and
that the owners made efforts to conceal their geographic location.

Anybody else heard of this type of attack against sellers?

Re: [MBZ] OT: Defensive gun usage

2017-10-15 Thread Greg Fiorentino via Mercedes
Did not actually USE the gun, but had a good grip on the holstered revolver and
was ready to draw and fire as it appeared a group of thuggish predators was
making a trial run at my brother and me. I don't think they saw that I had my
hand on a weapon as I had my left side turned toward them, concealing my
action; but I'm sure they saw the appraising but unafraid look I was giving
them.

We probably did not have the proper victim appearance, so they broke off and
left.

A couple of guys I worked with in LE had to shoot some bad guys, interestingly
all shootings were off duty. One of my fellow officers had trouble qualifying
at the range, but passed the practical test when a robber pointed a (what
turned out to be a fake) gun at him and demanded his money.

In the other instance 2 bad guys tried to carjack an off-duty officer. He shot
one and the other was soon caught. They had done this before and had killed
previous victims.

Final score: 2 bad guys dead, one imprisoned; two officers shaken but unharmed.
