Tom Hargrave wrote: Nope, different flywheel and you can't swap the flywheel because the 300D flywheel and crank are dynamically balanced together. You'll have a revvier motor, but the flywheel won't store as much energy as the proper one. I drive our 300SD in S simply because I love fishtailing when turning at stoplights when the car shifts into 2nd. I've worn the outer edge off of all the tires on all the cars from taking turns at excessive rates of speed and grinding the tread off on the fenderwell. I'm admittedly *very* hard on cars. That's another reason why I don't cheap out on repairs. [MBZ] Excessive current draw - '80 300TD
Apparently our '80 300TD is unhappy that I opted to take the Euro 280S out for the weekend trip to visit with family, and is throwing a bit of a fit. This morning, I came down to the car and opened the door and had an extremely dim front cabin light. Uh oh, I think to myself, and - you guessed it - not enough juice to turn the starter. I broke out the jumper cables and fired up the 280S to give the wagon a jump, and everything was golden and I got to work just fine. 7 hours into my workday, I went out to see if things were as bad as they seemed, and my fears were confirmed - dead as a doornail again. An hour later, I grabbed a jump to get her started, and made off for home. Once home, out came the multitester and the tools. What I found was that with the ignition off, I had current across the aux fan circuit (fuse 15, I think), and the clock/hazard/whatever else circuit (fuse 4, which is also where the aftermarket radio memory is supplied). That all seems normal. What wasn't normal was a 320mA current draw with *all* fuses removed. That tells me that something unfused is sucking my battery dry. Off the top of my head, that leaves me with a possible internal short in the battery (only a few months old, but Autozone Duralast brand and severely abused with a recent bout of poor charging from a bum alternator), starter (8 months old), or alternator (swiped from the 240D to keep the 300TD on the road, Bosch rebuild maybe 3 years old). Am I missing any other unfused sources? I ran out of daylight today, so I just left the negative terminal disconnected. Obviously, if I'm out of juice tomorrow morning, the battery is my prime suspect, but I'd like to know if I'm overlooking any other unfused potential power drains so that I can speed troubleshooting tomorrow afternoon. Jim Cathey wrote: The alternator will still charge with a bad diode, but it won't do it as well as it should. These things are notorious for freezing up and drawing current 24x7. To top it all off, repair is expensive! I'll give it a check tomorrow and report back with my findings. Everything is relatively easy to check: Dead battery tomorrow morning, despite being disconnected? Internal short of battery. Remove alternator harness and draw goes away? Bad diode in alternator. Disconnect ACC fuse and draw goes away? Bad servo. All of the above and draw still exists? Bum starter. They can see the e-mail header and think, Oh, it's that jackass again, let me hit page down/click the scroll bar or arrow and get to the next message. And this doesn't need to deteriorate into a discussion of how gmail is the second coming or anything either Bah. G-mail is good, but it's not *that* good. it's silly and selfish to think that someone should change their mail client to filter out messages that they shouldn't have to read. No, what is silly is that people who get offended by one person can't do the easiest thing in the world to make it go away - ignore it. Everyone raises a fuss. People get all emotional and write long missives about being nice, and how so and so is acting like a jerk and trolling the listgroup. It takes far less energy to to press the delete key, scroll past a message in the digest list, and considerably less than that to just ignore whoever is bothering you. And what is selfish is expecting the people causing the problem to police themselves. Some people are just that way. So let 'em be that way, and don't let it bother you. And before this turns into a freedom of speech discussion, the supreme court has held that freedom of speech does not cover offensive or profane language. Well, you are wrong on that point - freedom of speech does, in fact, cover offensive thoughts, ideas, and words. Remember: there is a right to free speech, but no right to not be offended. The rest of us on this list don't want OUR message getting ignored by the people with answers to OUR questions because the first message on a page/in a digest/whatever was a missive from you that made them think they had better things to do than read list mail anyways. This is a community of people that are not babes in the wood, Kevin. We all know about people, and how not all of them are nice, and how not all the time to people agree on everything. Therefore it stands to reason that we are also intelligent enough to ignore the trimmings and focus instead on the meat within. Re: [MBZ] Need guidance on an engine or driveline swap, w123 240d
Peter Frederick wrote: Putting the 617 in is more complicated, as you need different front springs and a different drive shaft -- at least the front half. Tranny will bolt right up, linkage will work, etc, but the driveshaft is shorter, probably have a hard time finding one (although the 615 auto driveshaft may fit the 617 manny tranny). Don't need to bother with springs much, just maybe spring spacers down the line for a proper conversion. Front halfshaft is different, shifter linkages are different, transmission crossmember is different (though, same crossmember as 240D auto), and auto driveshaft will not work. The 617 manny flywheel is different too, but some folks have used the 616 manny flywheel with no problems - longevity is still up in the air, though. The 5-banger was factory balanced differently than the 4, which explains some of it. Toss in driveshaft rebalancing, pulling dash to install pedal cluster, etc, it's not an easy swap, but doable. Figure a week in a well-equipped shop to do the swap, and another week to sort out niggling issues. -- John L. Ervine 1981 240D 4-spd 267+kmi 1980 300TD 168+kmi 1980 300SD 277+kmi
Re: [MBZ] 126 STABILIZER FAILURE--UPDATE/Opinion/ Correct me ifI'mwrong!
Rick Knoble wrote: There is something you don't know about. The stabilizer holds the upper control arms in place. Danger Will Robinson, do NOT drive it like that! It doesn't hold them in place, it links them together in an attempt to improve handling characteristics and reduce body roll in turns. The UCAs are mounted to and pivot at the body on one end, while the other end is connected to the steering knuckle, the bottom of which is mounted to the lower control arm which is held in place by the spring (whose other end is mounted to the chassis, and whose motions are damped by the shock absorber). The LCA is stabilized at the rear by the caster joint. While short-term I think the car would be drivable, long-term I think it would wear the suspension components quickly as they were forced to move more than they should. Worst-case, you over-extend a shock on one side, and ram the UCA of the other side through the inner fender (or rip the UCA from it's mounting point altogether). So, not safe, but certainly doable. I certainly wouldn't do it unless it was the only means to get myself and the car home, where the car would then be parked until I either parted the car or repaired it - with a preference towards the former. -- John L.
