[MBZ] Violent shudder

2010-12-09 Thread Ralph W
Hello All,

Sorry for the long absence from the list. I haven't had much time for the
diesel fleet the last few years due to extended overseas work assignments. I
also moved recently and had to clear out the parts cars.

Things are back to normal now and I have started driving the old coupe again
('83 300CD). The car has developed a very violent shudder when accelerating
between 5 to 20 mph under a reasonable load. Above 20 mph everything is
smooth again. If I accelerate very slowly the shudder is also not
noticeable. It feels as if something is banging in the area of the center
console. The vehicle is currently at my Indy for a new exhaust system. That
has been installed and can be ruled out. The drive line was also overhauled
about 50k ago with the flex discs and driveshaft hanger bearing replaced.
Indy also put the vehicle up in the air and accelerated the engine and could
not reproduce the shudder so the engine has to be under load. The engine
mounts do not seem to be in too bad of shape but haven't been ruled out as
the cause. Indy has had numerous friends check the car out as they visit and
nobody has come up with a clearcut solution yet. Vehicle was also driven in
reverse at a fairly high speed without experiencing the condition.

Has anyone experienced this condition before? We are hoping to pinpoint the
cause before randomly starting to replace components. It's almost x-mas and
I'm trying to keep the finances in control.

Thanks in advance.

Yea, I agree with the assessments. My Indy is a very thorough guy so I am
thinking that nothing is really bad visually but something must be worn out.
I want to avoid the trap of just changing out parts until the problem is
fixed. I will pass on your conclusions and have him check again. My records
of what was changed are in the car so I'll have to get my Indy to check
again.

I'd be interested in seeing what it goes for if it hits Ebay. It is a dead

curious how the engine performed with that many miles. I'm also selling my

[MBZ] W123 Steering gearbox leak

2009-04-27 Thread Ralph W
Hi All,
The steering gearbox on my '83 300CD has developed a leak. I can't really
identify where the leak is coming from but it is definitely from the
gearbox. I have a spare box from my wagon parts car I could use to replace
it with or I could try the gasket rebuilt kit. Anyone had luck rebuilding
the gaskets on these or should I just swap units. I hate to put the other
one in and have it start leaking. How susceptible are these units to a leak?
Anyone else have some experience with the 123 steering box?

Hello Listers,

Detroit.

1990 300D: Bad head. Body is in excellant shape. No rust. Alabama car.
Rebuilt rear suspension. Nice beige MB Tex interior. Good tranny. 225K on
the clock. AC not working, probably bad evap. Best Offer.

1987 300TD: I bought this wagon from Jeff Zedic about two years ago. 305K on
the clock. Runs well and tranny is decent. Replaced a while back with a
salvage tranny. Minor rust in wheel wells. Fair interior. AC not working. IP
leaks oil, needs to be rebuilt. Leveling system recently rebuilt. $2000 or
B.O.

[MBZ] Electronic key story

2009-04-12 Thread Ralph W
Hello all,
I thought you might be interested in hearing this story. Last weekend my
wife and I are in a bar in downtown. When we leave around 1am the electronic
key doesn't work (2001 E320 AWD wagon). This is now the second key which the
ignition will not recognize. The first one happened around 7 months ago and
we never got around to figuring out why. I've been in Mexico for the last
six months and forgot to bug my wife to take the key to the dealer. Now we
have no extra key and an all wheel drive car with a locked steering wheel
which is in Park. So we get my Brother-in-law out of bed to pick us up and
take us home. We leave the car in front of the bar in the valet spot. This
is Friday night so we can't get anyone from the dealer until Monday morning.
I decide to have the car towed to a relatives as I don't want to leave the
car in downtown Detroit for the weekend and the bar doesn't want it there
either since it's the NCAA Final Four weekend. Towing the car was not fun.
It had to be dragged up a flatbed with none of the wheels turning and the
front wheels turned all the way to the left. We had to drag it back off the
flatbed with my BIL's truck. The only thing MB Roadside assistance could do
was offer to send a truck and jump the car. Not the right solution. A little
Internet seach uncovered the fact that each electronic key only provides
199,999 nstarts per key and then runs out of codes and has to be replaced.
Sure doesn't seem like the car has been started that many times in 8 years
but who knows. The service deptment was no help. They insisted that two keys
couldn't have failed. They were opting toward the Electronic Ignition System
and wanted me to have my car towed to them. Replacing the EIS costs $1000. I
ordered a new key and $230 later the car started and works fine. I now
have two useless keys which can open the doors but not start the car. Isn't
technology a wonderful thing?

[MBZ] Brake question

2009-04-12 Thread Ralph W
I've got a leaky brake caliper on my '83 coupe. The front half of the
reservoir is empty. Does anyone know which two wheels this reservoir feeds.
This may save me some time figuring out which caliper to rebuild. The car
has been sitting for a long time while I was in Mexico and doesn't have
fresh brake fluid on the wheel any more. TIA

The odd thing is there are only three lines coming from the master

of side by side coming off each side of the MC and they appear to go to the
front calipers. This is based on a quick look from the engine compartment

Rich,
I would need to know if the engine is any good or if the head could be
salvaged. Doesn't sound as if I'd have much luck dealing with this place
long distance. It's for a pretty decent car but I don't really need it and
it may not be worth the trouble fixing. May be best left for someone else.

I can;t really answer your question about whether the system was the same or
not but I would assume so. They are both E class. I think the take rate for
wagons with 4-matic is very high as people tend to use them like SUV's.
Especially in Europe. The system was changed for the 210 series and is
supposedly much more reliable. My wagon has 125k miles with no problems to

[MBZ] Head for my OM602

2008-11-27 Thread Ralph W
Hello Listers,As some of you may remember my 90' 2.5L 300D has a bad head
and I need to replace it or the engine. Well I haven't given it or my cars
much thought since I've been living in Mexico for the last 2 months. The car
is at my Indies and fortunately he is a good guy and friend. I've
occasionally Googled used engines and haven't found much. There is a close
one in Ohio but the PnP wants $2500 for it. I think this is too much for an
engine with 200k on it. I recently saw a head for sale. MB #602.016 1201.
Anybody know if this head would fit my car. Listing only says OM602 engine.
I think a similar but slightly larger engine is in Sprinter vans. I'll be
home for the Holidays and need to make a decision on what to do with the
vehicle. By the way MB's seem to be few and far between here in Mexico, both
new and old. I did actually see a very old 190D the other day. It was moving
very slow. Looked like early 60's vintage. TIA.

[MBZ] '90 300D update - What to do now?

2008-09-17 Thread Ralph W
Hi All,
Perhaps you remember the issues I've had with my '90 2.5L turbo (225K). I
was fairly sure I had a head gasket issue but also a loud knocking noise
from possibly lower in the engine. I decided to have my Indy proceed with
removing the head and replacing the head gasket. Unfortunately the head
gasket was fine and the head was cracked in three places near the injectors.
I'm now in the position of either replacing the engine with a used engine or
finding a good head. PNP's seem to be asking around $2500 for engines. I'm
not sure were to find a reasonably priced head. The car is in great shape
and has had a recent rear end rebuild.

I'm really in a quandry as to how to proceed. As you can see by my signature
line I have plenty of transportation. I'm also being forced by my company to
work in our Mexican office for possibly up to six months so I really have no
need for any cars for a while. Thoughts and comments would be appreciated.

And NO I'm not taking $500 from Kleb at this point.

[MBZ] oil leaks

2007-12-22 Thread Ralph W.
Hello All,
I'm trying to track down some oil leaks in my 87 300TD. This is the wagon I
bought from Jeff Zedic about a year ago. I think one leak may be from the
vacuum pump. Jeff had recently replaced this and perhaps the gasket was
installed incorrectly. Can the vacuum pump be a significant source of oil? My
leaks are very bad. I also seem to be seeing alot of oil coming from around the
driver side engine mount. Anyone got any idea where the exact leak would be
coming from. I don't think the bracket for the mount has a gasket. I would
assume it just mounts to the block. TIA.

Re: [MBZ] oil leaks

2007-12-22 Thread Ralph W.
Hey Jeff,
Nice to see you're still on the list. I hadn't seen you post in a while so I
wondered if you were still around. Sounds like I have one source of leakage
tracked down to the vacuum pump. I don't think that it is the major source
however. I had powerwashed the engine last week and put it on my friends
hoist. Haven't driven it much since. I just looked at the engine again today
and am seeing major oil leaks at the engine mount bracket. I don't think the
IP would be wicking oil to that area. I wonder if the oil filter canister
could be wicking oil there. The canister is really barried and I can't get a
good look at it because of the location of the starter.

On another note the tranny finally died a few months ago. I found a local 87
sedan with a ruined engine, due to a bad head, sitting in a salvage yard.
Owner of the yard insisted the tranny was good. Had 225k on the clock. I
took my chances and bought it for $300. A friend who messes with tranny's on
the side installed it for another $250. It's run great so far, like new. I'm
keeping my fingers crossed. Aside from the leaks the only problem is when
the car sits for a while and it's cold I get tons of smoke at startup for a
few minutes. Then all is well and engine runs very strong. Not bad for 300K
on the clock. I have to get these leaks fixed. I'm making a mess of the
street out front of my house. My neighbor has a shop and hoist and is
constantly offering to let me use it. I think I'm embarrassing him.

 Ralph,

I've always suspected the injection pump to be producing a leak on the
engine. Also, yes full disclosure, the vacuum pump gasket is not 100%
 seated
correctly. I didn't notice this until AFTER everything was re-installed
 and
running!! At the time it was not leaking so I just left it and thanked my
 lucky stars.

I think you'll see the green gasket if you look at the left hand side of
 the
cover near the 10 o'clock position??

[MBZ] 300D 2.5 update and questions

2007-09-28 Thread Ralph W
Hello All,
I'm still having some issues with the '90 300D 2.5 Turbo. I've solved most of
the loudness and shake at idle. Simple solution. Replace the motor mounts! What
an amazing difference. I still have a knocking noise which my indy thinks is a
bad wrist pin. He has had all his mechanic buddies who have ventured to his
place listen to the engine and they all suggested the same source for the
noise. Consensus is also to just let it go as they also claim they've never
seen one actually break in a diesel. Anyone have other thoughts? Car has 220k.

The other issue my indy is trying to sort out is lack of power. Seems turbo
isn't working. I had discussed this with the group earlier. One thing we found
was that the vacuum pod on the trubo, which is the closer of the two to the
front of the car, seems to leak. Is this the one for the wastegate? It will
hold initial pressure but slowly leak down over about a 6 second time span. Is
this normal or does it need replacement. Part costs $140 so it's not a no
brainer replacement. TIA

[MBZ] 2.5DT Idle and turbo issues

2007-09-08 Thread Ralph W
Hello All,
I've been following the recent 2.5 threads with some interest. My '90 2.5 has
some been very sluggish lately. Limp mode is a bit overstated but I would say
I'm not getting any help from the turbo. Mileage on the car is still around 29
MPG. I must also note that I believe I have a head gasket issue. Usual signs of
oil in rad and anti-freeze usage. I have been somewhat successfully fighting
this issue for the last 40,000 miles with Irontite. The car idles horrendously
loud and shaky. Sounds like a big pickup truck. Engine sounds fine after about
900 rpm. I've done a diesel purge with no noticeable improvement. I'm sure mine
has all the computer controlled stuff that the later year models have and was
getting lost during the discussion on what all the vacuum valves at the air
cleaner do. Is there is simple diagnostic check to see if the sensors which
activate the turbo are working. The valve which activates the flap on the turbo
(wastegate?) holds vacuum and activates the flap.Any suggestions on any of
these issues would be of great help. I'm hesitant of going to the expense of
fixing the head gasket while the car still gets me around fairly well.

Re: [MBZ] 2.5DT Idle and turbo issues

2007-09-08 Thread Ralph W
Thanks guys. A little dose of reality from the group is helpful some times.
I've had my head in the sand for a while on this head gasket thing. I have
had coolant loss and white smoke at idle but the Irontite seems to have
stopped that temporarily. My wife won't drive the car due to the loud idle
and it's even getting to me. I guess it's time for a talk with the Indy. As
far as the lack of performance goes, I've run a fair bit of fuel through the
vehicle recently so I think it's good. The fuel filter was changed about 15k
ago (two years) when I did have a fuel issue. I guess a change is easy
enough to do as I have a filter handy. Can the large filter have issues even
when the clear one is clean?

You also have a vacuum transducer controlled waste gate -- check that
one, and the EGR transducer as well, since if either is not working,
the boost will be shut off.
How does one check these transducers? Are you referring to the vacuum
actuators on the Turbo or the ones near the air cleaner?

I don't know on the newer ones, but on my TD the BIG rivets holding that
piece sheared so it was flopping. I took it all apart and bolted it up,
has worked now for a few years. If it is the same, you would have to
drill those rivets and then bodge up a redo as I did.

Your symptoms at first sounded like a broken torque converter but if the
tranny has a little bit of power than it is not what happened to my 240D.
Basically I was at a light and went to take off when nothing happened.
Engine was fine but the car would not move forward or back. It turned out
that the torque converter has a couple of ears which engage into the tranny

Jim,
I have heard that others were able to fix theirs with some oil. It looks
like lots of work to access the motor so I figure I'd rather replace with a
known good unit than take my chances with oil and have to pull the unit
again in 6 months. Mercedesshop has a nice writeup on the process. Used

Re: [MBZ] 123 steering pump rebuild

2007-04-05 Thread Ralph W
More out of curiousity than need, I got the pulley off my pump and dug out
the seal. Rubber is hard as a rock. New seal is $3.50 from Rusty. Should be
a cinch to pound back in. Probably less time consuming than finding another
pump. I'll let you know if the fix fails.

Re: [MBZ] columbus CL 300CD

2007-03-31 Thread Ralph W
I'm pretty sure it was late '81 when MB added the turbo. Definitely
available in '82. I had an '81 parts coupe which I drove around a bit before
parting out. It actually wasn't too bad. Nothing like a 240! If this one is
rust free and has a straight body and the mileage is accurate it would be
worth the garage queen treatment. I love mine but the body has been through
several accidents making it unworthy of collector status.

Re: [MBZ] dexron III/mercon to Mobil 1 ATF transition

2007-03-30 Thread Ralph W

Chris,
I have successfully switched over 4 relatively high mileage MB's to M1 ATF.
The 5th vehicle was another story. My '87 wagon has 290K on the clock and a
less than perfect tranny. Upon buying the car in December from Jeff Zedic I
replaced the trans filter and switched to M1 ATF. The tranny did not like
it. Suddenly lots of flaring between 2-3 and confused downshifting. My indy
suggested switching back to standard fluid and adding some Lucas. The tranny
now has nice snappy shifts and the car has increased power. My advice is to
try it but keep my story in the back of your mind if something goes array.

Re: [MBZ] rear suspension links

2007-03-28 Thread Ralph W
I just had the entire rear end of my 124 rebuilt. Drives and handles like
new. By 200k miles the rear end was getting dangerous. All over the road
especially when it could track grooves in the pavement. The rear tire wear
was also out of control. The subframe mounts and the bushing (not sure what
it's called) at the wheel seemed to be the most wore out. Do the whole job
and get it right. Will hopefully be the last time you have to touch it.

Re: [MBZ] Leaky IP

2007-03-26 Thread Ralph W

Kaleb,
I've had most of the cars for a while now. I just recently got the '87 wagon
from Jeff Zedic before he crossed the pond. I changed the tranny filter and
put M1 ATF in and the tranny went to hell along with engine power. Indy
suggested going back to standard fluid and try some Lucas. It's like a
different vehicle now. Flares have gone to snappy shifts and car seems much
more powerful. I was considering dumping it but will now keep it. Indy is
now fixing rusted out jacking points.

As far as the two 123 parts wagons, one was also from Zedic about three
years ago. The other was my wifes before I got into a front end collision
with it. I'm just about done parting them both out and sending them on. One
to the salvage yard and the other to a new owner with more space to store a
nice rust free body.

[MBZ] Leaky IP

2007-03-25 Thread Ralph W
I am looking for some wisdom on how to stop a diesel leak in the IP of my '90
2.5L. Fuel is leaking out the top of the pump at the base of the threaded
fitting which the injector lines are threaded on. These fittings seem to be
held in place by some flat metal plates which are bolted down to the top of the
IP. The leak is definitely welling up from the pump and not from the threaded
nut of the lines. Can someone please give me some insight in what I may find if
I start dismantling things? Is there some sort of gasket which is leaking?
TIA.

Since we're talking M1 again I thought I would mention that Murray's Auto
has it on sale. They are in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, etc and have
been carrying TDT since it came out in Qt containers. It's on sale for $4.99
instead of $5.99.

I've been checking local Walmarts and have yet to see gallon jugs of TDT.

If you are referring to the Bentley Continental GTC I guess I'd have to

Thanks to Peter and others, the job was made easy. While its fresh on my
mind, I'll share the steps I took. Keep in mind that this is an 85 300TD
 and

I've no experience with other models.

I have the paper manual and read the procedure before hand, however,
more than one model was covered and I got a little confused. Peter's
 answers

were not confusing and all went smoothly after his input.

1. Remove the exhaust system from the transmission to the bumper.
Two bolts with nuts, ½ socket and ½ box end. Four rubber donuts,
 all near
the bumper, I left one donut attached to hold up that end while I
 removed
the flange connection. I used a screwdriver and a wiggle to separate
 the
pipe. Lowered it to the floor and pushed it clear. The manual spoke
 of an
exhaust baffle that mine did not have. I pre Kroil everything I work
 on but
there is very little rust under this car and it probably was not
 needed.

2. I supported the transmission with a large piece of wood and a
small floor jack, then removed the transmission rear support plate
 and
mount. Four bolts going straight up, 11/16' socket. One nut above the
 rubber

mount, ¾, I used a flex gear wrench.
3. Disconnect the front flex disk. I removed the three bolts (5/8
socket) and nuts (11/16' box end) that left the disk attached to the
transmission. I had to rotate the drive shaft once to gain access to
 the
third bolt. The rear wheels were on ramps with a large floor jack
 left under
the differential. I raised the rear just enough to turn the wheels. I
 ended
up doing this again with the rear disk, so next time I'll remove
 bolts front
and rear, then rotate the shaft only one time to gain access. I then
 used a
tire tool to force the shaft to the rear and clear of the
 transmission.

4. Remove the center bearing support bolts (two). ½ short socket
with a 6 wobble extension. Both are straight up, but one side needs
 a

little wobble to get a good fit.
5. Disconnect the parking brake equalizer mechanism. I removed the
spring by inserting the tire tool in the coil as a handle and gained
 enough
slack to remove it and the V wire anchor. Needle nose pliers were
 used to
remove a tiny cotter key from a small pin that released the cable
 coming
from the cab. Now there was enough slack to remove the lever and one
 of the

brake shoe cables to let everything swing clear.
6. There is a welded plate across the shaft tunnel that keeps the
shaft supported up front until you are ready to slide it out to the
 rear. At
this point, I used bailing wire to secure the two shaft ends together
 so
there was no chance of separation until I had it out and marked for
 exact

rematch.
7. Remove the rear disk. Same as the front, I left the disk on the
differential. I forced it forward with the tire tool, dropped it down
 and
slid it to the rear and out. I should have left it on the shaft for
 easier

replacement on the bench. (oh well)

Hopefully there are folks that will chime in to make this easier.

 Harry

Selling my 1992 300D 2.5T - it's a fantastic car, but it's too nice for
me.

My plan is to downgrade to a 240D (the student model for a career
student).

Basics: 290Kmi, smoke silver (702) exterior, beige MB-Tex interior.

Details: Everything works but the rear passenger overhead light. Full
records until about 200Kmi. 290Kmi, new transmission at 200Kmi, valve job
and timing chain at ~250Kmi, new motor mounts and antenna at 286Kmi.
Complete suspension job done at 286Kmi.

Completely up to spec, maintenance-item wise (air filter, oil = M1 5w-40,
oil filter, transmission fluid and filter, PS fluid and filter, and rear
differential oil.)

Even has Australian sheepskin seat covers (1 pile, black, might take with
me). I have the original Mulrooney sticker - only options were the smoke
silver paint and the passenger airbag.

Sunroof, monowiper and ACC are perfect.  Converted to R-134 refrigerant;
A/C

works great. New A/C compressor installed in October. Block heater works
great. Just put in a new cruise control unit. New rear brakes. I'm the
third owner of the car.

Bad stuff - two dents on trunk. Couple chips in the windshield. Small
door

dings on the rear passenger door. No records from 200Kmi - 286Kmi (second
owner hasn't mailed me his records). Rear overhead light doesn't work.
Front overhead light (one of them) is burned out. Emergency brake doesn't
work.

MB-Tex is near perfect under the skins - two small gaps in the Tex (not
all
the way through, just to the backing) in places you wouldn't see them if
you
weren't looking on the driver's side; passenger seat is perfect. Back
seat

is perfect. If you don't want them, I can keep the sheepskins.

Tires are in fine shape; I'd say around 50-75% left. Just rotated them.
I

can get tread depths if you want.

Becker sounds great; had a new antenna mast put on 5000 miles ago.
Everything about it works perfectly.

I've had it garaged since I bought it; pictures were taken outdoor for
lighting.

longevity,

ease of starting, etc., or saving a few bucks on oil. Metal always costs

You dont disconnect them thru the spring. They have a cover you remove
from inside the car to get at the fittings.

Karl Wittnebel wrote:

Hardest part is disconnecting the hydraulic fittings

under the carpet in the rear, just behind rear seat

These rarely go bad. Make sure it is not your pump,
the check valve, the ride height sensor arm, or the
air reservoir things. you can rebuild the valve for
next to nothing. There are a bunch of posts on how to
test the system. You can even replace the ball joints

they sometimes go bad before the rest of the unit.

I'm in Indiana. Neither the local Wal-Mart nor Sams stock Delvac-1,
nor do they nor AutoZone, PepBoys, etc. carry the Delvac-1 equivalent
TSUV Mobil-1 (or if they do, they don't seem to keep much in stock
because I've never seen it on the shelf).

Nearest truck stop I know of is 50 miles from here.

Who is the Mobil distributor who will ship UPS?

So I'm a bit confused. How many pods control the floor heat? Is it better to
just buy new or alot cheaper to rebuild? I think I'll start by pulling the
radio as it's also due for replacement and see what's accessable from there.

Ralph,

Fortunately these pods are among the easier ones to replace. Early
87's have two pods (a bit of a PITA to RR because of the pressed on
lock washers) and early models have a single pod which unclips easily.
They're accessible after removing the climate control unit.

Tom - I can't see how the slight over torque and over stretch on a lubed

thread strength with 2x or 3x torque levels.

 Dave,

It's not that they'll fall off, they won't. It's that the grease reduces
friction actually causes you to over torque the bolts or nuts, causing
 the
bolts or studs to over stretch. This weakens them.

Console (radio, ACC pusbutton unit, console cover) has to come out to
get to it. It's on the front side of the heater box, I don't think you
can change it with the console in place.

You can change all but the servo inside the heater box with the console
and underside dash covers off, it's worth it.

I disabled mine long ago. Remove your passenger side front mat, and lift up
the plastic/metal(?) plate at the front of the footwell. Under that, you
should see an electric box with a Becker tag on it. Simply remove the plug
to this unit, and the problems should be resolved. I think the problems
you're experiencing are due to some issues with your drivers side door
lock. I suspect that if you were to install a remote locking setup, this
would no longer be an issue.

YMMV

Re: [MBZ] 124 seat bottoms

2006-12-20 Thread Ralph W

Great info Joe. Good to see you posting again.

That explains why the seats in the '87 feel so much different than the'90.
Dave also has a couple of nice pics on his website of the foam blocks. I
assume I can get them from Rusty?

I wonder if they will completely cure my problem. I seem to sink into the
rear center of the seat. Could there be broken springs similar to what
happens on 123 seats?

Re: [MBZ] New wagon

How was your experience at US Customs. Hope they treated you well.

Actually it was quite pleasant, however, they wouldn't give me the necessary
customs paper work I need to title it in Michigan. I need to provide them
with a letter from MB saying the car meets all US regulations. The officer
said I could take the car home and come back to the border when I get the
letter. I'm going to call MB on Monday.

I guess I missed Jeff selling his wagon until Ralph bought it. Oh well,
too far away anyways.

Jeff never actually posted his wagon. When he announced he was moving to
England I inquired as to what he would do with the wagon and we worked out a
deal on the side. This is the second wagon I bought from him. When he
scrapped his 123 I took it off his hands as a parts car. Thats when I got to
see this wagon for the first time.

[MBZ] New wagon

2006-12-17 Thread Ralph W
So I picked up Zedic's '87 300TD yesterday in Toronto and drove it back to
Detroit. Trip went well. I think I'm going to like this vehicle. The 3.0L is
quite different than the 2.5L in my '90 124. No noticeable turbo like the 2.5.
Jeff left me with a number of unfinished suspension jobs but provided most of
the new parts. Should ride like new when I'm done. Good job for the x-mas break.

Time to off load the two parts wagons!

The cirping crickets in the '90 124 have gotton almost unbearable at low blower
motor speed. Not noticeable at high speed. So it's either high speed or off
these days.

How does one access this unit. I've heard it is through the cowl screen on the
engine side of the firewall. Is this correct and how easy is it? Can the
bearing be fixed or lubed or is a new assy required. Any help would be
appreciated.

If you don't mind me asking, what type of money did you need for it? I've
decided to try and find two older mercs to replace what my Dad and I
currently have as daily drivers. Reading all the posts on the list, I'd
like to try a diesel, but two older gasers with proper maintance would be
ok
too. I was thinking, a wagon, and an older S Class, or a wagon and sedan
E
Class. If anyone knows of any, in good shape (no rust), and well
serviced,
please let me know. I'm in the ON Canada area. Willing to pay a fair
price

for the right cars, but not really interested in projects, especially this
time of year. hee hee. I would want to PPI the cars, and I'm not an eBay
buyer.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm
glad that you're going to move up to a W124 300TD. I hope that you get

years of service out of it.

Thanks for your sympathies Kevin. Actually the other parts wagon was bought
from Zedic to support my beloved red wagon. As many of you know I got lots
of useful parts from that wagon and was in the process of transplanting it's
engine into the red one. I had also already purchased new fenders and a hood
for the repair.

Unfortunately the guy who was going to do the body work noticed enough front
rail deflection that would need straightening to make the project cost
prohibitive. Thats when we decided parting out was a better option. My 10
year old son and wife are disappointed since a 123 fire engine red wagon is
a very unique vehicle these days. Fortunately this deal for Zedic's wagon
came along at the right time.

I just came in from a short trip in the '90 300D. It's raining here in Michigan

there anything which can be done to fix this problem? Is it a sign of imminent
death for the system? How does the mechanism moving the blade up and down work.
Is it some sort of hydraulic cylinder? Thoughts and comments would be

Well you all have seen the first one. well at least okieQ people have.
The other one will need some work. Its pretty rough around the edges
but supposed to run and drive though.

[MBZ] W124 and 16 wheels

2006-08-27 Thread Ralph W
I'm looking for some more input on the '90 300D. Some of you may recall me
whining about the 16 Kuhmo tires I had on this car. They have since been
replaced with a set of Michelin MXV 215/60's. Same issue as with the Kuhmos.
Car is all over the road and tracks every little depression. The W124 comes
standard with 15 tires so I went back to the original wheels this weekend
which have Michilin Pilot Alpine 195/65's on them. Handling of the vehicle is
vastly improved to the point where I would say the car has no suspension
issues. Has anyone else experienced these symptoms with lower profile 16 tires
on a W124? I'm thinking I should just sell the 16 wheels and go back to the
old 15 pancakes for good, or is this an early indication that my suspension
really needs some work. Thoughts or comments?

I do not mess with rebuilding calipers if the pistons are seized. That
means they are rusted and that means the surfaces will be shot. If they
are simply leaking past the seals, then rebuilding is a good idea. If
they are frozen, forget it.

Peter Frederick wrote:

DO NOT, EVER sand either bore or piston with ANYTHING. If it won't
clean up with brake parts cleaner, you need to replace the caliper.

Sanding either bore or piston is going to cause them to be out of round
and/or too large (or small), and the piston will surely bind and stick.

The piston is also chrome plated, and a smooth surface is required for
the piston seal (it's NOT an o-ring!) to retract the piston. A rough
surface will cause the piston to remain out, and it will also usually
cause it to leak brake fluid.

Clean piston and bore with lint free cloth and brake parts cleaner.
I've never seen anything that didn't come right off with brake parts
 spray and a rag.

Corrosion of bore or piston below the piston seal requires replacement
of caliper. Corrosion of the piston above the bore is OK, and you can
CAREFULLY clean rust in the bore above the pistons seal with Scocbrite
IF you then very completely flush out the caliper. Grit of any kind,
sandpaper or Scotchbrite, will cause the piston to stick sooner or
 later.

My description _was_ the procedure! The hardest part of the job is
getting the pucks out of there. That's why I liked the grease gun
idea, it eliminates the scary 'hammer-of-extreme-pain' step with the
air compressor that I used to use.

Remove rubber sealing caps
Remove pucks
Remove 'O' rings
Carefully wet-sand the bores and the pucks to shiny cleanness
Clean and blow-dry entire caliper, passages and all
Put in new O rings
Put sealing cap on puck
Lube bores and pucks with brake fluid and install
Snap seals over bores

Re: [MBZ] W124 and 16 wheels

2006-08-27 Thread Ralph W

The factory designed the car that way for a reason.

I don't disagree with you but I know Dave M. has some pretty crazy tire and
wheel setups on his W124's and I'm sure he has made it work. Could be his
upgraded sway bars, etc

Re: [MBZ] W124 wiper motor

2006-08-27 Thread Ralph W
I'll give it a shot. I'm sure it needs to be done regardless of my issue.
Any idea if any of this is in the service manual? I couldn't find any
reference to wiper motor.

REmove the covers and lubricate the gears, track, and sliding pin with
good synthetic grease before the motor locks up!

I don't remember how they come off, but this is really critical for
good operation.

[MBZ] W124 sunroof

2006-08-27 Thread Ralph W
Well I guess this is my day for 124 questions. The sunroof on my car works fine
but is in obvious need of lubing. I've read all the dire warning of how
dificult it is to work on the 124 sunroof. Is there something I can lube and
clean without taking the sunroof panel out and screwing something up? I've
completely dismantled and repaired 123 systems without any trouble. Am I asking
for trouble here?

I think the diffrenece in sidewall height must have a large effect as well.
My snow tires are fairly large and compliant. My Indy says he has noticed
the same sort of tendencies on other types of cars where larger low profile
tires are used over stick setup.

I've experienced the same thing with the 17 rims on my 124--really seems
to
bumpsteer now. I think this setup amplifies and telegraphs suspension
flaws

much more than the stock rims. I suspect that with a complete suspension
rebuild, it would exhibit much less of this negative tendancy.
