I got no idea why, but fuel prices are going up out PNW way. I thought our

oil season has caused #2 to climb closer to premium.

Population pressures. Yeah, that is the ticket!

What is needed is the natural response of pressure. Put in a pressure
situation, you either blow up or squish it all. In an over crowded garden, or
overgrown orchard, you prune and cull. A good gardener does not profit from
allowing weeds to prosper nor sickly plants to infect the field

Be sure you place the panel in a location that gets sun all hours of the day.
Around my home the idiots toss the lights up where they want light, not where
sun will be. Magic misunderstanding of how the things work, so they must
function because the sun is out, even if the thing is placed in shade all day
long.

Guy up the street covered his roof with solar panels. Must be able to generate
3kW if they were not shaded by massive trees but for high noon. Solar water
heater is equally occluded.

Socialized medicine will almost always default to the least cost method, no
matter if it actually results in effective care. Healthcare is a business

exposure to real v. book knowing.

Just my $0.02 from watching the rapid decline in medical care my 89 year old
mother received since 2008. The old school docs have cashed out, selling to

2018-11-26 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
Plug in cars are great for markets like Seattle and other clogged road urban
areas. The things will not need to power while they are trapped in gridlocked
highways or city street. They will not get you where you want any faster than
a petrol car.

I can make it the five miles to downtown in 20 minutes on a really good day.
If (always) traffic is at a standstill, it takes 45 minutes to an hour and a
half. Fuel gets burnt hoping somebody will be able to move a few feet. The
plug in car will end up sucking electrons for just as long in traffic to run
the AC and other gewgaws keeping the occupants distracted.

We are getting no new power plants and the stupid greenie idiots want to take
out the Snake River dams. I am not sure what energy those produce. I know the
Elwah and one out of Skamania County did make electrons for our grid. Both are
now gone, so the fishies are safe for the Norther Pike to gobble down
anadromous salmons. We may have another forest of bestilled wind turbines
being planted in the coming decades. I think the one out in Eastern Washington
SWMBA got a permit for ten years ago is finally coming online.

Maybe they would be more likely to have success with fewer unintended
consequences if the obsolete nukes were fed to a few remote volcanos. That
would spew organical products into the air high enough and wide enough to
increase albedo, as well as spread the goodness into the oceans and reduce the
acidity.

+1

I am still scratching my head as to how #1 boy was able to spin the car 180*,
from a dead stop within its wheel base.

It is an all day, long distance, driver that will not wear you out. I loved
the range and mileage. Pretty good build quality. Much more likely to be on
the road than any W220.

Kenwood makes a good single DIN unit with flip screen that has all manner of
accouterment. The SD has a 560DV (I think) that can do GPS, hooks to a back up
camera, iPhone interface, Sat radio, DVD player as well as AM/FM. Pretty sure
the newer units have a bunch of that built in.

The guy doing rebuilds must have an in or is picking up rusted out things with

First, take the car apart (after purchasing a rebuild pack of cells for half
dealer cost) so that nothing is attached behind the front seats. Then you have
to put it all back and everything is peachy keen again. He picked up the car
as non-op for like $1500 and will sell it on after the install for $4k.

showed up, but it was a good event. Fellow will fabricate most anything as
custom.

I asked what his approach to the RARE interiors might be. My SL is green on
green. There are no major providers who supply that stuff. So, my seats are a
custom build. Same as the carpets, door cards, console, and all the other
goodies. GAHH top is at least standard, so only need to spend $2k there.

I will just have to go the Preservation Class way.

SWMBA is a very good person. A veritable saint for tolerating my … idiocy for
the past 30+ years.

Priority is to keep our progeny safe, not the idiot she may have made the
mistake to take as spouse. My bacon is best kept out of jumping from a skillet
into flames. If I choose flames, then she does not want to be party to that if
it imperils her babies. Sounds smart to me.

I am not fully non-compismentis, but have certain tendencies that can place in
peril financial fluidity. I will be out of luck once she gets full power of
attorney. I will not be needing to drive at that point

Re: [MBZ] If not the SD....

2018-11-17 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
SWMBA seems morally against the marque.

It clashes with her perceived identity as a nice person. That I gather to
myself the bottom feeder sort of car, and those tend to require a reasonable
investment to update, this is deemed to be a “waste” of money.

My perspective is otherwise. I see them as more fiscally responsible than
paying for newer cars which will probably require a significant investment to
keep them in good repair. The W220 was a decade old when it came my way. In
the four years I drove it, repair costs equalled purchase price. At the point
of SLS and cluster failure, I had tossed close to $5k in 12 months at it.
Those repairs would have upped it to another $6k. Car would not meet KBB for
those repairs.

Dan may be very well versed in how to make the newer cars worth owning, but I
am only capable of keeping simple old cars on the road with what little cash I
have and a few band aids.

The local auto auction had these things on offer, and they sold for pennies to

I won that argument, as it was agreed by both parties the old car was probably
less expensive to run and keep running. The logic was on my side. The decree
was against all older star cars. They are all on DNR and need to go away, as
that will make SWMBA happy.

I operate on cash, she has big dollar and credit scores. My cash is all gone.

Since it remains running well, I would replace the poor quality sheet metal

Much simpler to have the old stuff go away and bolt on the pretty ones in an

The W220 was not bottom fed. That really sealed the fate of the Star Cars in
her mind. NO Benz is good in her eyes. The w124 was too “snooty” for her, and
repair costs on that 15 year old car were not “fiscally responsible”.

My vote would be to put a low miles 617 in the SD at less than one years car
payments. It may not be a perfect car, but I can source better wood trim,
rebuild the seating, and make upgrades for lower costs. That “newer” car will
require paying a shop to work on it, as I will not. Not into computer stuff

[MBZ] If not the SD....

2018-11-14 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
Since I need a daily driver, I am looking at the more “reliable” brands. Cars
of the Orient! SWMBA will no longer accept cars with stars. So, opinions on
these few models please

Toyotas—
Sienna of 2007-2010
First gen Highlanders
Lexus RX 06-09 including the hybrids

Honda
Odyssey of 07-10
Pilot 07-09

My needs include driving my 90 year old mother places, transporting four adults
in comfort for long distances, and hauling magical parts from the yards.
Needs to carry hoods and doors with ease. Has to be secure to allow for over
night storage of tools and luggage.

The green idiots did not get the carbon tax passed, which would have added
$0.57 per gallon.

And the price of diesel has been hanging around what 87 octane is.

I am becoming a bit unhappy having to give up having a diesel DD. Being able
to pump fuel once very 400 miles rocks. Having to stop every couple hundred to
add petrol in a guzzler is going to stink.

I did consider a Priapus … for just a moment. Neighbor drives one. Crap car
that is not comfortable for more than an hour behind the wheel, or any other
seat. A w126 is near perfect seating

Re: [MBZ] Paint

2018-11-11 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
Summit Racing

I did paint on Allen (SD) 18 months ago. Used Mom’s garage to set up a paint
booth of sorts. The Harbor Fright guns do an adequate job of laying down
paint. YooTooB provided the education.

You need a really strong air system with loads of capacity. Make an air drier
and you will deliver enough clean air to paint anything. You have enough scrap
to play with. I would advise hoods and trunks to figure out shooting pattern.

All the work is in the prep, not really the shooting to make the job look
great. If all you are doing is 040 it should be simple. For the best looks,
you need to strip all trim and the rest so that paint goes into all the places
it should.

I learned all the bad habits by cutting corners.

[MBZ] Car go BOOM

2018-11-10 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
… and much smoking, with grinding noise as the SD coasted to a stop.

I was headed to a club event (DIY shop for the day) and of a sudden, the engine
produced a rumbling harmonic, then went BOOM, with smoke trailing, motor went
dead, and the grinding too place while the RPM were dropping.

Once sort of safely out of the lane of traffic, I popped the hood and tried to
see if there were massive leakage. I found none. Oil was at top of the mark.
Trans fluid was warm and smelling ok. Coolant overflow tank was below the low
mark. No smells of evil from under the hood, no sign of obvious damage under
the car from front to back. I was about 12 miles from the venue, but figured I
would be stupid to attempt to get there, even if folks would be on hand to
assist in repairs, so I called AAA.

I attempted to get it to crank, but all it did was poot out some more smoke,
and would not crank again. The glow system worked, just not enough power in
the starter to spin the motor. Maybe too much resistance in the block?
Battery is about six month old and got a full charge after draining two weeks
ago.

The SD is now parked at my indy awaiting his prognosis on Monday.

The Deputy Fife types get tangle-panty when I drive Polei. They try to
explain I can not drive the car, either for looking like a cop car (Falls under
“collectible vehicle” definition), being out of date plates (restored YOM),no
insurance (collector cars do not require, (so I choose not to show that it is),
not being in a parade, for being in his town, that it may be my only vehicle,
he does not like my passenger (my MOM!) or any other thing he can pull from his
shorts.

I share with them the Revised Code or Administrative Code, chapter and verse
from a booklet I keep updated with most recent amendments. They do not like
being made to look fools, but can not issue a citation, because the law is
against them. Reconciled in 2010 to clarify the 1996 findings that cops should
not harass people in classic cars unless there is an actual traffic infraction.

I have found that presenting the statutes to the administrative minion tends to
resolve the misunderstandings and errors made by the Barney Fifes. A person
does need to fess up when they were in the wrong. I quite enjoy quoting the
statutes to the cop while he is fishing for something else to try to catch me
on. Then inquire if he really wants to waste the courts' time with his
persistent flinging of noodles upon the wall. They get peeved, but do tuck
tail and waddle back to the cruiser to turn off the lights and leave.

IF the trades need workers, I am sure that each trade will find a manner in
which to make their guild very appealing. Put the feds into the mix and you

The voters here just want another handout instead of putting in the effort for

I used to do the premium pump gas, but did not feel it did well in the w220 or

Without the alcohol, octane drops down to 88. Pump gas comes in 87 89 and 92

Whhht?

Around PNW the price for #2 is on par with 87. The idiot legislators want us
to vote to reduce carbon by taxing our fuel another $0.52/gal. This makes the
dorks in electric cars feel superior, because the power plants are exempt from
being taxed for spewing carbons.

ANYWAY, I filled up the SDL (24 gallons) for $3.46/gal. That was a penny
cheaper than the petrol 87. Safeway fuel, not the expensive stuff from the

[MBZ] Who is in Charge?

2018-10-29 Thread clay monroe via Mercedes
TIme for power upgrades.

I tried to drive Allen yesterday morning and found her dead as a rock. I
figured I could give her a jump with Polei, being diesel to diesel, but all I
got after five minutes of electrons flowing over what now seems to be overly
fine wire gauge (maybe I need to invest in 00) was a wincing shrug of an
attempt by the starter. Screw it, I had Polei running, so I took her.

I got home post game and tossed the sears charger (smart 2/10/50) at 2amp at
the battery. I just installed the group 49 in June, battery born 4/18, so was
bewildered that the battery was non responsive. Three hours of two amps made
no impact on the battery, so I popped it to 50 amp start mode and gave it a
chance to put some electrons back in the box. No avail. No action at all from
a turn of the key. And, the charger was pretty warm, it was getting dark, and
I was not interested in messing about with electrons in the rain. The charger
and battery came inside and I put it to charge low and slow over night.

No electrons in the box this morning and just a warm charger. Multimeter found
2.8v in the battery and no voltage from the charger. This forced me to unhook
the battery tender widget from the R107 and put the battery on that. The
Diehard charger just moans and gets warm with no lights or needle action, nor
expulsion of electrons out the clamps.

I have the receipt for the battery, and will visit the vendor if she does not
take a charge. What I would like is the group consensus on replacement charger
for my gaggle of group 49 batteries. All are fairly new (under 18 months). I
am tempted to get a wheeled charger with ability to jump a cold winter battery
at this point. Or, should I get a standard Schumacher set up for $75 with low
and high amp? What of a few of the low cost things and just keep them under
the hood of each car?
