I replaced the ContiPro's on my '91 300D last Feb (got ~70K Mi) with a set
of Kuhmo's. WHile I dislike sending money to China they were too good a
deal to pass up. So far (~20K mi) they have been excellent - great in
rain, snow and dry. Plus they seem to be wearing very slowly.

It's getting harder and harder to find 14's (for my MGB) and gradually
getting harder finding 15s. I suspect 15s will virtually disappear (except
from the vintage tire sellers) as 16 becomes the new standard.

Worn suspension on my '87 wagon has killed the Continental ContiProContact
tires after about 40k miles. I'm in the process of rebuilding rear
suspension and installing new front struts, and I need to decide which
replacement tires to get. Unfortunately Tire Rack had the latest version of
the ContiProContact is on back order (195/65R15 in the 91H service rating),
so I've spent some time looking for something else.

Should I go with the 205/60 tires? It looks like there's more variety and
lower prices for that profile tire.

2010-12-17 Thread Max Dillon
I wonder how much of that difference was due to the size (195/65 vs. 205/60)?
Seems intuitive that the 205/60 would have better grip dry than a 195/65, all
else being equal, but I suspect that there can be wide variation from batch to
batch of tires from the same maker. However, even though purchasing tires
seems
like taking a chance no matter how much research one does, I'll bet the quality
across the board is far higher now that it was decades ago (similar to
improvements in motor oils).

Rim width and tread depth can mean a lot too, not to mention those zero tread
depth Eagles were the only V rated tires I can recall using. 190D rims are
narrower than 2.3-16 rims, and it's possible that those five spoke Rikens were
even wider than stock 2.3-16 rims. All I can say for sure is that they were
wider than the 190DT rims when I swapped them. The Kumhos were a low end model,
about a month old and 11-12/32 deep, the Eagles were probably 2-4/32.

I'm not sure about ultimate cornering ability, but it practically jumped into
corners with the V-rated 205/55 tires and wallowed like a pig with the 195/65
tires. I drove it to where I was storing the 190D, swapped wheels, and it was a
marked difference driving home. Tire pressure might have played a part too.

Well, I had the spreadsheet already, and it makes it easy to
compare multiple tires and it's trivial to shuffle numbers to
see various results. And for me typing the math function into the
spreadsheet is about as fast as entering it on a calculator.

In addition, the miata.net site lists revolutions per mile,

Oh? Why is that? If it is not directly calculable from the
tire dimensions, then it is tire model and inflation pressure

Revs per mile is very handy in adjusting cars with OBD programmable
speedometers. For the rest of us, if we know the revs per mile on our OE tires,
than that's what we mostly need to know about the new ones. Tire Rack lists revs
per mile for most of the tires they sell.

This reminds me. I'm a bit slow here, but Mitch and his

my 123 TD. What makes these special is the 1635 lb (750 kg)

few 14 inch tires made now with the higher load rating.

I'm quite please with the tires. They ride well, handle wet
roads well, seem to do fair in the little snow they've seen.

Thanks Mitch!

BTW, yesterday was the first day I had to drive on accumulated snow this fall.
My General Altimax HP on the Oldsmobile (same size, 195/65HR15) did OK, but not
as well as they did two years and 10,000 miles ago. When new, they were
surprisingly close to snow tires. They've slipped in the survey since I bought
them, they were tied for first with the Michelin Primacy MXV4.

Here's a Bridgestone touring tire, seems well liked for a tire with ridiculously
high treadwear rating:

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=BridgestonetireModel=Turanza+Serenitypartnum=965HR5TSvehicleSearch=falsefromCompare1=yestab=Survey

A couple of Michelin models with good survey and treadwear ratings, including a
low rolling resistance tire (only T speed and 89 load rated though). $70 rebate
on Michelin right now. (Wow, the MXV4 is $120 before rebate, was $90-100 not too
long ago)

So does anyone on this list run 205/60R15 tires on a 124? I'd like to stay
with the factory rating, but I'm considering whatever trade-off may be

I suspect the trade-off will be in fuel consumption (worse), speedometer

These 195 tires are getting to be a problem to find if my experience is
any indication. And MBs seem to require a particular load rating due to
the general heavy nature and handling requirements, which are even more
difficult to find in a 195 (if you follow the rules) for these older
cars. 205s seem easier to find for the application, I'm not sure that
small difference will make much difference to anything noticeable, but
I'm sure there is some aspect to that I am not aware of.

I have similar BS Potenza tires on my 300D 124. They seem to grip
well, but don't look like they will set records for long mileage, but
I prefer grip over uber high mile tires the slip when wet and are
worthless on snow and ice. I think they are a good all round choice

For $194 plus shipping/mounting, I'd be all over these if I needed

2010-12-11 Thread Max Dillon
I've been playing with the review sorting option for the General and the
Potenza in 195/65R15, sorting on Mercedes owners, and find that many of the
complainers have symptoms consistent with either no rotations, poor
alignment, worn out suspension, or under inflation. The rest of the MB
owners really like the tires, but many of those are newer cars which almost
certainly means larger tires.

Well, TireRack couldn't deliver the tires before early January, and I need
them earlier. TireBuyer has them in stock for a higher price ($78) and no
rebate, but free shipping, so I'll pay about $75 more but get a tire that
looks decent. Better, TireBuyer will deliver them to my favorite tire/brake

 205s on a 124.

With all due respect to Loren, I think a mountain is being made out of a
molehill here.

Of course there is a difference in width between the two sizes, which, all
other things being equal, ought to mean slightly better handling with the
205s since there's a slightly larger contact patch.

Mileage is impacted primarily by the overall diameter of the wheel-and-tire
combination. Do the math on the two sizes:

205 mm * 60% = 123 mm sidewall height
195 mm * 65% = 126.75 mm sidewall height
205 mm * 60% * 2 + 381 mm wheel diameter (15 in) = 627 mm overall
wheel-and-tire diameter
195 mm * 65% * 2 + 381 mm = 634.5 mm overall wheel-and-tire diameter

The difference in sidewall height is less than 4 mm, about 5/32 in. That's
less than the change in sidewall height caused by the tread wearing down
over the life of the tire. Overall diameter of the wheel-and-tire combo
decreases by less than 1.2% when you go from 195/65 to 205/60. You'd notice
more of an impact on fuel consumption if you put a couple of dog food bags
in the trunk the next time you went to the supermarket and forgot to take
them out for a few days.

Last but not least, the owner's manual for my '87 300D lists 195/65R15 as
the preferred tire size and 205/60R15 as an acceptable alternative. As
an adherent to Dr. Booth's the-Mercedes-engineers-know-best doctrine, that's
good enough for me. I have run 196/65 Bridgestone Blizzaks in winter and
205/60 Dunlop D60 M2s (NLA, sadly) on my car since I've had it, both on the
stock 15x7 wheels, and have always been more than satisfied with its
handling.

As Rich noted, there is a lot less variety on the market in 195/65 than in
205/60, and it will only get worse since few (if any) new cars come with
that size. Compromising on tires is going to impact safety more than
anything else you can do to the car. Find the model you want in one size or
the other, with a sufficient load rating for our heavy old beasts, and
you'll be best off.

With a Stock tire of 195/65-15 and a New tire of 205/60-15, it says,

Speedometer reading with non-stock tire is 1.2% too fast.
When your speedo reads 60mph, you are actually traveling 59.3 mph.

Unfortunately you can copy from the page and paste, but you can try all
sorts of different combinations, including one for Wilton,

With a 205/30-20, speedometer reading with non-stock tire is
0.6% too fast. 60 mph reading gives 59.7 actual.

The 145/30-22 also works, as does the 215/75-12! :-)

This reminds me. I'm a bit slow here, but Mitch and his
tire-hunting ability found me 205/70R14 General Altimax RT for
my 123 TD. What makes these special is the 1635 lb (750 kg)
load rating. I haul heavy in my wagon, and there seem to be
few 14 inch tires made now with the higher load rating.

I'm quite please with the tires. They ride well, handle wet
roads well, seem to do fair in the little snow they've seen.

Thanks Mitch!
