Mercedes content: I ordered a belt yesterday for the $500E300 which amazon
told me at 9AM the USPS could not deliver because they could not get to my
front door. I forgot to look in the mailbox which is 1000ft from my front door,
which is also easily accessible should anyone come down the driveway and get
out of their car.

Yeah, it looks like it was just a single message I sent with a link to my web
site with pictures of the car. Didn’t find it in the OkieBenz byte bucket, but
it didn’t appear to be going through. I appended it to the radio thread and it
went through.

Weird.

I just noticed that they do not call it R-12A any longer. It’s R-134A.
Probably some rule about not being to replace anything in an R-12 system.

Commercial grade propane.
It's the highest common everyday grade (refrigerant grade R-290 isn't that
common)
In most states not named California, HD5 is the only grade that's
legal for sale

as home heating propane.

I have tried this and duracool and I just do not like the blends. If you have
any sort of leak at all the different elements leak at different rates which
changes the mix and it does not cool. You can't simply top it up you have to
discharge and start all over. You may not have had a leak leak before with r12
or 134 but it is possible the blend could leak. If it was super cheap it would
be ok but most of these seem to be expensive now days.

I have also used it with excellent results! When the compressor blew on the
123 (totally unrelated to the ES-12) the mech used good AC parts from a
recently wrecked 300CD and filled with R-12. That was in 2013, and I have not
had to charge since.

I had some cans left over, so Dimitri and I put it into his ’78 240D with a
York compressor, and I think he had ice cold air for almost a week. It leaked
out. That’s next summer’s project.

that is my guess. I don't know if you could safely pump it in with a
vac pump. I'd guess you could pump it in with an old refrigerator
compressor with refrig valves soldered on. Jim is the guru of test
refrig. Maybe he'll tell us.

How would it work? Would the pressures allow the butane to flash into
the propane tank, or to run in as a liquid? Start off with an empty
propane tank then get the butane in there, then add the proper amount
of propane?

The better camping gas has iso-butane in it.
Butane is a bit low in the vapor pressure department for diluting propane
refrigerant. It doesn't even make decent lighter fuel in cold weather unless you
carry it in a warm pocket.

Is it practical to premix butane and propane in a 20 lb propane

All this talk inspired me to charge The White Whale with the Envirosafe that I
bought several years ago. I had a weak charge of r134 in the system for test
purposes, partial can to leak test new condenser. Didn't cool much, but would
take the edge off.

So I just recovered the r134, charged with the Envirosafe until about 100 psi
was showing on the low side gauge with engine off. I heard a distinct click as
the pressure rose, which I assumed to be the pressure switch exceeding the
minimum required pressure. Now when I start the engine, the compressor won't
engage!

With the load from external sources (sun) and the ambient
temperature and humidity, 60F vent temperatures aren't adequate.

The car goes in for tinting next week, which should make a
substantial difference in cabin temperatures due to the
elimination of UV. I also need to sort out some vacuum actuator
issues with the blend door in the dash, as I'm sure one or both
of the actuators are leaking, sending much of the tempered air to
the base of the windshield. Granted, the cabin still cools, but
you don't get the benefit of the air blowing directly on you.

Yes, if the spousal unit was present, this would be a DEFCON 1 event.
Fortunately she has her SL500 which makes ice cubes.

There are resorts not far from me in Pasco County that require the residents to
carry towels with them at all times.

My "gang of six" works fine, and I have a new spare courtesy of the parts
swapping abilities of the PO. He failed to use good troubleshooting logic
which would have immediately pointed him at the defroster vacuum actuators in
the dash. When they fail they not only redirect much of the airflow, they bleed
off vacuum in the system and prevent the other actuators from working.

Thanks for the insight, Manfred. That certainly makes sense, as I hadn't
thought about the blend aspect of the refrigerant.

I ordered a case of the industrial envirosafe yesterday, so I imagine it will
be showing up early next week, at which time I'll be charging the system with
it. Not sure what I'll do with 12 cans of the stuff, but the economics of
three cans for $57 versus 12 for $88 made the case purchase easy to justify.

Right now with a proper charge of R134a I'm barely getting 60F temps at idle.
Once I get moving and compressor speed picks up, temps will drop to the low
50s, but that's the best I have been able to get out of the system while tuning
it for R134a.

who have used such things will probably know the answer to:

When I look at the labeling for products such as EnviroSafe, I notice that it
says to invert the can when charging. If that is the case, you would be
introducing liquid rather than gas into the system.

I have always understood that one should never introduce liquid into the low
(suction) side of the system, as it could cause damage to the compressor.

Is this the case, or is there something different about the properties of
hydrocarbon refrigerants that requires or allows one to do so?

Thanks!

Dan

In the UPS system it has to be shipped "HIGH VALUE". High value items get put
into special containers which are treated like gold, because I imagine
sometimes they are. High value insurance is not cheap, but if you have an item
that is irreplaceable, it is worth every penny.

Rick,
My wife has been packing and shipping antiques for almost 2 decades. The
problem is that during the holidays, temps get hired who aren't properly
trained or just don't care. Packages aren't handled as gently and respectfully
as they used to be. My wife foam, bubble wraps, double boxes with more peanuts,
etc. and stuff still gets broken. If someone drops a big box on a small box
containing a glass item, guess who wins. No amount of insurance or anything
else can prevent breakage. There are certain parts of the country where extra,
extra packing is required and then cross your fingers and hope for the best. In
our experience UPS is no better than USPS. But UPS is generally more expensive
than USPS.

Curly,
It's sad when we ship a one of a kind something that's 100+ years old and it
gets broken. UPS or USPS says it's insured so you can replace it. I always want
to ask them where they can get replacements. Dealing in new and antique items
gives you an appreciation for the workmanship of the "old stuff". There are
very few companies that still make items that remotely compare in quality and
workmanship to the old stuff.
So, I will never hurl anything that's priceless or remotely close to priceless.
Best Wishes,
