Re: [MBZ] 124/201 ball joint tool

2019-11-02 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
As I recall, I popped out the BJ with a LFH.  Then used the HF tool to
press in.  Easier on 124 than 126.   I think the HF tool got off center
and cracked the boot on the new joint, so it got shoogooed.

With the borrowed 126 tool from Q, the 126 ones went in slick and easy.

I am getting ready to do ball joints on a 201.  I have done a 124
before using the HF tool and some sections of cast iron pipe
connections for adapters.  With this setup I got it done on the 124
years ago but it was a pain in the ass.  I have located the pipe
pieces I used but in the move I have no idea where the HF ball joint
tool went to.  I figure this would be a good time to just get the
proper one.  So, with that said, what is the proper tool?  Car has
about 180K on it, should I just pull the control arms and replace the
bushings also?  That requires another special tool to press those in
and out?

The hazard fraught tool is a big C clamp, just one arm. The proper shop tool is
a complete 'O', like two C clamps that share one screw, so it is very strong.

I think I found a place that sold aftermarket version once, but mucho dinero.
I'll check my book marks.

Removal is much easier with generous application of the blue wrench, until the
end of the control arm is just glowing dull red, and then hammer that sucker
right out.

See procedure 33-0440 in the FSM, picture of the tool 107-598-01-43-00.

https://www.samstagsales.com/mbref.htm#201 has a couple of numbers (two for

I have done several sets of inner bushings with the HF tool and a ball peen

Do yourself a favor and get four of the eccentric bolts for adjusting the
inner control arms, they are probably rusted solid in the old joints and
you'll never get them to turn.

None of the 126 ones I have done came out nearly as easy.

The big honking C clamp that weighs twenty pounds, their universal ball joint

Yes, it does.

I wonder if between these 2 kits there might be the proper adapters that

I ended up buying this just now:

On the other hand, if the inner bushings needs to be replaced it might
be better off to just to replace the whole control arm.

Here's the "proper" inner bushing tool, Sir Tools M0062, on this page for

I have done several sets of inner bushings with the HF tool and a ball peen
hammer to peen open the sleeve that holds the two halves together.

Do yourself a favor and get four of the eccentric bolts for adjusting the
inner control arms, they are probably rusted solid in the old joints and
you'll never get them to turn.

Re: [MBZ] 124/201 ball joint tool

2019-11-03 Thread MG via Mercedes
They must be in there a lot tighter then in the
123. I knocked the ball joints out of mine with
two hammers very easily. Put the ball of one
hammer on the bottom of the ball joint and then
hit the flat head of that hammer with a bigger
one. The round ball end supposedly collapses the
outside of joint and causes it to pull away from
the socket it sits in and the whole thing pops
right out with a few good hefty whacks.

I watched the tech do that with a set of ball
joints on another 123 so I knew it worked for them.

I think I found a place that sold aftermarket version once, but mucho dinero. I'll check my book marks.

Removal is much easier with generous application of the blue wrench, until the end of the control arm is just glowing dull red, and then hammer that sucker right out.

Re: [MBZ] 124/201 ball joint tool

2019-11-03 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
124 lower ball joints have the rim on the opposite side as a 123, so that
method won't work because the stem is in the way and needs to be dealt
with. I usually cut off the stem with the saw-z-all in order to get
clearance to fit the press or to make a flat surface to pound on. Leaving
the control arm mounted in the car means not much clearance between fender
and ball joint to swing a hammer. The first set I did, I cut them off and
hammered them out, that was a lot of work. Second set, rigged up adapters
to press them out after cutting off stem and heated up the arm / joint with
a torch, they pressed out pretty easy.

Re: [MBZ] 124/201 ball joint tool

2019-11-03 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
The Harbor Freight tool and it's clones is too soft and bends when significant
force is applied, which then causes the joint to tilt and either get stuck and
refuse to move or become very difficult to get seated.

We ended up making a W126/W123 tool out of the one I bought -- welded 1/4"
steel plates on the sides and ground the end down to fit into the control arm.
Works great for that, but can no longer be used for anything else.

I bought a better one (as was recommended on the PeachParts forum I think, I
don't remember) and it's been doing great work with ball joints for use for the
last six or seven years. Actual ball joint replacement on a W124 with the tool
is quite easy once you get to it. Not bad at all, and no heat is required.

I took my 123 BJs to a shop to change, that is how the old mech did it.
Put the knuckle in a vise, put a ball peen round end on the bottom of
the BJ then whacked it coupla times with a BFH. Then used the MB press
to slide them in. One of them the collar broke, was some off brand Rusty
sent me, sent them back for Lemforders and it went right in.  Same deal
on a 126 I did.

last six or seven years. Actual ball joint replacement on a W124 with the tool
is quite easy once you get to it. Not bad at all, and no heat is required.

I talked with a friend who is really into machining and welding about that
concern, he assured me it is not. Heating to a nice red glow and then allowing
it to cool back to room temperature, with no quenching, is not going to change
the character or temper of that steel. Dimitri may also have some knowledge

The bigger danger is the fire hazard and the risk of burning your hands, both

NOT TRUE.

It may not matter to suspension members, but as soon as shiny
steel starts to show color on the surface - long before it begins
glowing - it can be changing the temper.

If steel is quenched after glowing red it is fully hardened.
Cooled slowly (minutes or hours) is fully annealed (soft). After
hardening, it can be heated and quenched to partly un-harden it,
that is draw a temper. The surface color can be used to indicate
the temperature.

So a suspension component like a control arm _probably_ isn't
hardened - but if it is, heating it above 200C [400F] could be
changing the temper!

Here is a couple sites for color charts.
https://anvilfire.com/FAQs/temper_colors_hardness.htm
http://www.smex.net.au/reference/SteelColours02.php

Note that the cooler temperatures (below 425C [800F]) are surface
oxidation colors NOT incandescent, or glowing, colors.

Philip,

The color in the chart on the second link (SMEX) that is about where I
ended heating was in the brown red to blood red color. My friend did talk
about what kind of steel and whether or not is was already tempered as big
factors, and we decided that these control arms are probably not tempered
or hardened, and that was why the heat / cool cycle was not a concern.

So, how can we determine if the control arms were tempered / hardened?

Re: [MBZ] 124/201 ball joint tool

2019-11-05 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
Hot stamped will be hardened, cold stamp will be only work hardened.

There are other things to consider as well:

Heating to red hot softens the steel, which can easily result in opening up the
hole where the joint is pressed, usually making it slightly oval since you are
heating on one side. Now the press fit isn't a press fit any more, and the
joint can come loose more easily.

You can also induce or expand cracks by heating only one portion of the control
arm, resulting in sudden failure as the crack grows.

I've been in more than one auto shop where a customer was informed that unless
the part the customer heated trying to get a ball joint out was replaced with
new the shop would NOT work on the car. Way too much liability.

A good press tool does the job in a couple minutes, no heating, hammering, or
other destructive things need be done.

Just like wailing away on a tie rod end socket instead of using the two hammers
trick. Pinch type ball joint tool works far better.

So I believe. OTOH, the electronics will probably take the vehicle permanently
out of service anyway.
The reduction in fleet service life due to tempering might not be noticeable.

Here's the "proper" inner bushing tool, Sir Tools M0062, on this page for
$365.

Curly is providing absolutely the best advice!    Last  month I returned
2 laptops (different sellers) who advertised Back Lit Keyboards which
neither had. Both advertised Returns and both paid the return shipping.
But one withheld $100 to "Service and clean" the computer (I had it for
less than 24 hours) and I filed a complaint.  I rec'd a answer from ebay
in less than 12 hours and eBay actually paid my full Return Cost no
questions asked - other than the basics about name/address, etc.
Because the Seller advertised Backlit Keyboards which neither had.\

Actually I've had good experience with eBay when it comes to returns.
Keep pushing until you get satisfaction.  Personally, rather than paying
such a high increase I'd cancel my bid if Ebay or Paypal fail to come to
your aid.

Good luck!

Re: [MBZ] 124/201 ball joint tool

2019-11-06 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
eBay and PayPal favor the buyer in almost every situation, which is good for
you *if* you’re the buyer. If you’re the seller, you’re screwed almost.

I sold a laptop a few years ago and the seller got seller’s remorse almost
three months after they took delivery. Said they wanted to return it as it was
“defective”. I told them that if they returned it to me I would consider a
refund as long as it hadn’t been abused. They went dark.

A day or two later I got an email from PayPal saying they were going to debit
my account for the computer. I told them to stuff it. Since I use a blind bank
account to fund my PayPal payments and purchases and I keep like $5 in the
account so the bank won’t close it, they took that but got nothing more. They
emailed and even called me. I told them I wouldn’t refund a dime until I got
the computer back, and provided a copy of the email I had sent the buyer
stating so.

They suspended my account. Big deal.

About six months later I tried using it and it was active again. I’ve used it
since and there’s never been a peep out of them.

Jerks.

So we should get everyone on the list to hit the seller with a purchase,
cancel when he tries the bait and switch, and drive his rating down.

When they asked for more money, I said I would have to stick with the original
agreement. I then never heard anything or received the part. Filed complaint
with eBay and seller sent refund. I really just need the damn tool.

Re: [MBZ] 124/201 ball joint tool

2019-12-18 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
So I'm now getting hit with a request for more $. Told 'em I want the
listing to be updated with correct shipping, then I'll purchase new auction
and cancel original auction. For an extra $25 in shipping, I think it is
still probably a good deal.

If / when I actually get the tool and see if it works, I'll give 'em a
negative rating for the price increase on the shipping and delay due to
back-n-forth.

So seller updated the listing with corrected shipping, an extra 20 Euros,

So seller updated the listing with corrected shipping, an extra 20 Euros,
so the total cost is now about $120. Bought that, cancelled first order,
