[OFF-TOPIC] MySQL License Question
Hi! I sent this question to the mysql license email, but it's been more than 3 days since then and I haven't received a answer... So I will ask it again here, to see if someone can clarify this issue. We are small hardware store. We have developed our own POS software to fill our necessities for our 12 stores. We developed our software using MySQL and Java, and they run on Linux. Our POS can run any other DB, but we really like MySQL. The thing is, we cannot afford paying a MySQL licence (every single pos we want to implement in the coming months will have to use a copy of mysql db installed) for every single POS we implement. As I had understood your license, we can apply for a GPL MySQL since our pos software: .- It's not for sell, we do no distribute to 3rd parties, our pos is only for internal use. We are using the MySQL that shipped with our linux distro. .- Our software can use other db's , we just use MySQL because it is really good and our choice, but we can use any other jdbc compliant db. Am i right ?? We would like to apply for a paid support in the future, but we cannot afford a MySQL license for each POS we implement. We haven't infringed in any legal aspect, since we have only used mysql for development, we still have not deployed, am i right? Would you be so kind, and explain to me, the details in this case? Thanxs! =) -- MySQL General Mailing List For list archives: http://lists.mysql.com/mysql To unsubscribe:http://lists.mysql.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

On Fri, 2004-09-24 at 11:05, Jim Grill wrote: Hi! I sent this question to the mysql license email, but it's been more than 3 days since then and I haven't received a answer... So I will ask it again here, to see if someone can clarify this issue. Are you actually distributing MySQL with your application? Or are you just using installations that are installed separately? You only need the licensed version for two possible reasons: 1) You are bundling the MySQL server or the C client code in your application which is not licensed under the GPL or a compatible Open Source Initiative license approved by MySQL. NOPE, we plan to install the POS application in machines that previously have a MySQL installed. I mean, we will install linux into the computer, later we will install MySQL, and after that we will install our POS software, the POS software is just a plain jar file. So... as i can see, we ONLY use MySQL. We will use the MySQL version that may come with the linux distro, or one we compiled ourself. Second, the POS application is _ONLY_ for internal use. we haven't broke any rule, isn't it? =) 2) You want support. That's it. Pretty simple. If your application simply *uses* MySQL but you are not distributing any of the MySQL source code in your program or along side your program you don't need the license. If I'm wrong about this someone please yell at me. I've been studying for the MySQL certification and this is covered in the first chapter of the study guide. :-) Regards Jim Grill -- MySQL General Mailing List For list archives: http://lists.mysql.com/mysql To unsubscribe:http://lists.mysql.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Why MySQL is used instead of MaxDB?
Chris Nolan wrote: The answers are wide and varied: * History - MySQL has been an open source product for longer * Flexibility - MySQL's different table types are ideal for some situations * Performance - MySQL is the fastest database on the planet for most tasks * Support - There are massive amounts of software out there that will interface with MySQL --8 Just to add a few more thingies: Even though MaxDB has better looking admin tools (even the documentation is visually more appealing) MySQL is by a _BIG_ far easier to manage, learn and use (even easier to install!). I have been using both data bases for a few years now, I belong to both lists, the maxdb and the mysql list, i generally feel more confortable using mysql than max db, even the syntax used to admin the db seems to be easier to learn and use that the one that comes with dbcli(maxdb command line client). You can embed mysql server, you cannot embed maxdb is another nice thing. You can get mysql for free in almost every isp and webhosting on planet earth, maybe even in outter space, we'll see... =) I guess the average is about 1000 persons that knows about mysql against 1 that knows about maxdb You can even find more books on mysql. On the other side, maxdb is a _VERY_ feature rich data base, it has triggers, views, and every thing that you might expect from any other comercial grade db. A lack of this things in MySQL does not mean that mysql is a rather inferior choice, most of this feature can be replaced or simulated with a little tweaking and a good knoledge of the sql and mysql api. In the long run, i would like mysql to provide tools comparable to the ones provided by maxdb, things like a good gui to REALLY manage the db (i mean a tool that let me manipulate the my.cnf, just as an example) and implementing long awaited features like views and triggers (i know they are planned for 5.1 and above) (I WISH) i could get a nice mix of features of the best of maxdb and mysql, called it MEGA DB =) CONCLUSION: Download both, try both, subscribe to both list, evaluate them, there are certainly jobs, that both databases can perform equally, there are task that are better suited for one or the other. The MySQL c api will let you do operations on the db server (inser, select, upgrade, delete) and get info about the db server (show column in, show tables, etc). On the other hand, you can perfectly write a set of functions to connect your i/o streams coming from the rs port and input it to the server using the mysql c api, but _YOU_ have to write the logic. Re: ERROR 1045: Access denied for user: 'root@localhost' (Using password: NO)
Hi! You seems to have just installed mysql. The root user should be able to acces a mysql server from anywhere by default. I don't know why you can connect from localhost, probably you delete the [EMAIL PROTECTED]? Anyway it is a good thing to delete the root user after the initial setup, once you have a full rights user created that can manage the db. To do this, loginto mysql as root, and create a full-blown user with everything enable and give it a secure password. like this: mysql -u root -h 192.168.1.10 Now create a full rights user like this grant all privileges on *.* to yournewusername_here@% identified by 'passowrdhere' with grant option; flush privileges; This will create a new user with a set of rights comparable with the root's own permissions. Now, with this superuser created you can delete the root user use mysql delete from user where User='root'; flush privileges; Now logout, and login again using the new password and the new user! voilà! OK, a few things you can try 1.- I usually compile everything my server uses. I recomended you to use the gui just because i tought rh installer would resolve the dependencies by itself, big mistake here =) RH seems to prefer PostgreSQL and considers MySQL a second hand choice =( S, I can help you out compiling a fresh MySQL server or... 2.- Download a precompiled binaries from the mysql.com site, read the install instrucctions (quite easy by the way, we can help on that also!) and use mysql's own binaries Any choice is good and valid, make a choice and let us know if you have problems with it =) Sure we can help! =) Best Regards! When you (eventually) find this out and try to install the server, problems occur because the server should be installed before the client (I think). So you then uninstall both server and client, then re-install the server. If sucessful, you still get problems when you try to re-install the client as the GUI cannot find the server's headers and so will not install client software. So you go and find the rpm and try to install it yourself and get the dependencies problem. I think you get an idea of my frustration, and I have not even got to the part of trying to use mysql yet! Re: msSQL - MySQL (exhanging data between the two)
I haven't tried, but it seems quite difficult, for one thing, both sql engines are very differents. So the short answer would be a plain no. Now trying something exotic would be making a odbc bridge between the two dbs and then use some scripted solution it would be possible, something like java or c# or even vb(.net), even perl or php could be used, but again it is something that you should find out for your self. When deciding about what programming language one key comoponent should be that the language has native access to both server (php? perl?) so type coneversion would be easy to manage. But again it's just a thought... There are umpteen bash references that show you generic syntax and tell you the terminology used by bash but darned few decent tutorials to show you how to write bash scripts. Re: Problems Installing
Hi Marie! OK, first of all, you could download a rpm package and have redhat rpm system manage all the installation details for you, this one has a basic advantage, using rpm system that comes with redhat you'll be eable to centrally manage all your packages automatically, wich is very nice thing to have when being new. s Most Modern Linux distro do not use /usr/local at all, most of modern Linux distros today are based on a new, better suited for today, standard called LSB. Basically LSB says that all userland programs should be placed under /usr, that is /usr/bin for normal userland programs, commands and utilities. /usr/lib for libraries. /usr/include for development files(such as .h files). /usr/libexec is used for many misc things, this is where mysql server will store the mysql server binary file (mysqld) since it doen't belong to userland cause it is a server, a background service. /usr/local is considered deprecated, old and is only there to keep compatibility with older stuff. If you download and install a rpm package, the system will copy and place your files automatically for you in the places where they should be. So if you have downloaded a rpm package (my recomendation) you can easilly install it by issuing the following command: rpm -i mysqlpackage-that-youdownloaded.rpm One thing to note is that mysql has several packages, usually one has the server binaries, that is, a package wich ONLY contains the server, other is the client wich are needed to connect and manage the db. The last package is de devel wich are ONLY needed if you intend to develop software against the db server(for example develop a c app), otherwise it is not needed. Command line or gui? It's up to you. I personally like the mysql command line client, i find it quite competent tool and having it to manage my server in every platform is a plus. But if you want a nice GUI you can equally try with any of the free tools available: sqlyog: www.sqlyog.com dbtools: www.dbtools.com.br mysqlcc: www.mysql.com Those 3 are only a short example, i am pretty sure that if you ask for a nice gui tool in the list you will get some others choices. After installing the db you will need to configure it, but that's for another mail, if you have problem with it just let us know =) Best regards! Re: Who can help the Newbie???
Hi! First of all, in order for us to help you, we will need more concise descriptions of your problems installing mysql, i guess for what you are saying that you are installing on windows, so we will need at least to know, in what you are stuck, version of the OS you are using, what is going wrong, the command or actions you took or executed and the output so we can help you. Regarding the things of having to access mysql ONLY trough a DOS windows, that is not at all right, sure you can do whatever you want with mysql using only the console, but you can also use a nice gui, a few examples: 1.- dbtools: www.dbtools.com.br 2.- sqlyog: www.sqlyog.com Best Regards On Tue, 2004-03-02 at 15:26, Randal wrote: I am very new to this database thing. Re: Problems with mysql
Two things first, first of all you obviously don't have mysql correctly installed, message a means mysql dead unexpectedly while trying to start, mysql cannot start. Why? I just don't know you didn't detailed your install procedure. Message b means that you cannot connect to the db because message a. No server is listening on default port or in the default socket. Now... what to do? 1.- Download a more recently mysql version, latest is .18 2.- Check your install procedure and find out the correct procedure at: http://www.mysql.com/doc/en/Quick_Standard_Installation.html, installing mysql is more that simply running the installer (HINT: don't use the installer, use the zip, it is easier to manage) 3.- Would you mind detailing your install procedure, in a step-by-step fashion so we can better help you? Re: urgent help required for mysql
Hi! It seems that you have installed mysql, but you did not run the mysql_install_db, this script will create mysql internal databases(the ones that carries user and config info), the script is usually in install_prefix/bin/mysql_install_db If you have no recently installed mysql, and the server has sometime working already before this message, there is some serius problem here. I thought I read on the MySQL site that I only need the server for a single user, single computer database? Most probably yes, however i must mention one thing, you can perfectly install the server (and only) the server in a linux machine, that would be the server machine, and administer it remotly, that can be a perfectly normal situation. The server packages contains only the service files, the binaries needed for a working mysql-server, on the other side, the client-file contains administration utilities and client files (a command line utilities called mysql - like oracle's plsql, for example; and the mysqladmin wich you can use to administer the server) So, it's up to you friend, you can have a linux-mysql server with only server related stuff installed and access it and manage it remotly (from yout windows desktop, as an example) using any gui tool you want; or, you can install the client files also, and manage your server via the command line and locally in your server. Any of the two are perfectly fine options, most people here will tell you (i guess) that we use both options, i mean; a remote, nice, gui utility and the command line tool :) As an extra, may i recommend some tools? 1.- mysql administrator is a brand new tool to administer and monitor a mysql server, it runs just fine in win and lin, it's free, and directly supported by mysql. You can download it from mysql site 2.- dbtools is a mysql administration and design tool by a few very nice brazilian guys it works only on windows, and also support PostgreSQL. Re: MySQL Performance Tuning?
Hi! We are a hardware store(similiar to usa's home depot) here in venezuela. We have 14 stores that moves a very heavy load of traffic. Many of our retails runs in a home brew POS that uses mysql. Then sales are uploaded to a bigger in-store server and then move to the central office. The prices, promotions and offers are constantly replicated to the stores, so imagine it has a lot of traffic. For performance, the single most important factor seems to be a fast io hardware and a good properly configured os, instead of more ram and processor. We currently compile all our software, and run our db in linux boxes(you didn't specify a os) We compile our db using -O3 -march=i686 -mcpu=i686 -funroll-loops -fomit-frame-pointer -fno-rtti -fno-exceptions -felide-constructors Our servers are compiled static, it seems to be a little faster than a shared server, but your millage may actually vary. Our kernels are also compiled in a similar fashion. We specially add similar cflags and cxxflags to the above, modifing the Makefile in the kernel tree. Also a pair of tricks are also used inside the kernel, we rise the SEMNI value from 128 to 512 and the LOG_BUF_LEN from 16384 to 65536 in each server. We also tweak a few runtime kernel variables, chages in the sysctl.conf: added: # Improve file system performance vm.bdflush = 100 1200 128 512 500 6000 500 0 0 # Improve virtual memory performance vm.buffermem = 80 10 60 # Improve and better control swapping into the system vm.freepages = 383 766 1149 # Increase swap bandwidth system performance vm.kswapd = 1024 32 16 # Increase number of pages kernel reads in at once vm.page-cluster = 16 # Improve files memory mapping and generic caching vm.pagecache = 8 25 85 # Improve number of page tables keeps in a per-processor cache vm.pagetable_cache = 35 60 # Improve the number of open files fs.file-max = 16384 We also compile and use our own ssl binaries, we do not use the distros version. One thing to note is the fact that poor code will produce poor performance so check your code and your sql. We do not run mysql and apache on the same server, you shoudn't do that neither. What is your set up? OS? Are you using any speed-up technology like zend optimizer with your server? PHP can be a big resource eater, so find out where is the bottle neck, if it is mysql, calculate well your load and create a propper configuration in your my.cnf, add a good balance of harware and a few of the tweaks mentioned above. May i recommend Gehard Mourani's book on Securing and Optimizing RH Linux? it is available at tldp.org, for free under guides, it's intended for RH only, but it also works on suse and debian(and any other) if you know the way around your distro. Hope this works, regards On Thu, 2004-01-15 at 13:23, mysql wrote: Hi Gurus, I'm currently building an application which is expected to take very high loads. Re: Mysql by itself? [err: 10061]
I think the point is, that when you installed it, there was a dependency was it mysql? or was it apache? I am thinking it was apache, maybe the auth_mysql was compiled with it, so it needed the mysql to run porperly. Apche has a module that allows it to authenticate users against a db server like mysql, your apache server might have this module.. so that's why it probably needs it. This is my only explanation of why it needs it =S MySQL is a complete, independent, standalone db server, same goes to apache server, they can work together, but they are completely independent pieces of software Best Regards On Fri, 2004-01-09 at 02:42, EP wrote: EP wrote: OK, I need to ask a stupid question. Re: New INstall of MySQL
OK!, first of all, do you have a complete-working directory of mysql in whatever drive you installed mysql?, this is usually in c:\mysql. I asked this because the installer doesn't seems to work. Also there is no need for a my.cnf and a my.ini, you should only use one, one is enough, i rather use my.cnf in c:\ To start mysql, giving that: 1.- my.cnf is in c:\ and correct 2.- you have a complete install in x:\mysql, where x is the drive where you installed mysql go into mysql directory, go to bin, there you have a few choices, 1.-mysqld.exe the standard server 2.-mysqld-max.exe the max server, with bdb and innodb support 3.-mysql-max-nt.exe server, with dbd, innodb and named pipes To start the server type: 1.- mysqld --standalone 2.- mysqld-max --standalone 3.- mysqld-max-nt --standalone To install mysql server as service: 1.- mysqld --install 2.- mysqld-max --install 3.- mysqld-max-nt --install One advice, mysql.com has copies of the mysql server in a zip package, with no installer, is quite easy to install it, i always prefer this method, i just don't like installers :) You just unzip it, edit the my.cnf and copy it to c:\ that's all. Now for the my.cnf, you did move the data dir to somewhere else, did you move your mysql internal data bases to the new locations?? From you my.cnf: # Uncomment the following rows if you move the MySQL distribution to another # location basedir = c:/mysql/ datadir = c:/SQLData did you move the data dir to the new location? Re: compiling mysql with ssl
I had the same problem, just don't know what is wrong with the red hat ssl packages. I did this: 1.- download a fresh copy of openssl, configure with --prefix=/opt/OpenSSL, compile and install, everything will go to /optOpenSSL, so, the new version won't conflict with the red hat's 2.- compile mysql with: --with-openssl-libs=/opt/OpenSSL/lib --with-openssl-include=/opt/OpenSSL/include --prefix=/opt/MySQL I like to keep control with what i compile and install, it is quite hard to find whats installed with MAKE INSTALL under /usr, changing the default prefix is somehow easier to manage, every thing will go to /opt This is how i did it, I have copies of 4.0, 4.1 and 5 running on the same machine like this Hope this helps! It did change, but you can still use the old protocol by adding --old-passwords option to the mysqld or adding old-passwords option to the [mysqld] group in my.cnf, using this, old clients will be able to connect to 4.1 series servers without probs :) By the way, i am not quite sure, but you should remove the down legal note, i think the mysql list is public and free to every one to use and quote, so while posting here it is better to remove the note, maybe someone at mysql.com could confirm this? Hi all! I also agree with you, it might be a hardware problem, but i also must note, that in a environment with very often writes to the db, myisam tables are not always the best choice, that's why i suggested a change to InnoDB tables, a problem with sql or logic is more likely to happen that a hardware glitch Just my two cents here :) On Thu, 2003-12-18 at 07:51, Thomas Spahni wrote: Hi, either this should be properly debugged (if the problem persists with 4.0.17) or it is a hardware glitch. It happens that when a client tries to log into the db server using passwords the server doesn't seems to authorize. Even the most recent MyCC client fails to autorize users using passwords. Do I need to compile the clients against the new server's library? The MyCC client was linked againts the 4.0.16 server. was there any change in the auth-protocol? Change myisam format to something else, like InoDB or BDB Best Regards! On Fri, 2003-12-12 at 15:05, James E Hicks III wrote: I'm having sporadic myisam table corruption. Re: Login Problems
By default mySQL comes with a set of users that are allowed to login locally without password. You should create a normal-superuser account, and delete all others, and use this user to administer the rest of the data base and use it to create all others accounts that you might need. To create a new full-blown account: grant all privileges on *.* to your_user@% identified by 'password' with grant option; Best Regards! -- .. * _ _ __ __ .. * \ \ \ | | __ \ /\ | | || Victor E Medina M * \ \ \ | |__ | |__) / \ | | || Linux - Java - MySQL * | __| | ___/ /\ \ | | || Dpto. Re: Connecting WO 5.2.1 to MySQL 4.0.13 on Windows 2000?
Hi! Most probably the drivers will be fine placing the jar file under c:\jdk_dir\jre\lib\ext This way there should be no classpath problem Adding JDK_HOME and JAVA_HOME variables to your environment should help also As for the drivers, both should work, just fine =) On Sunday 01 June 2003 19:15, Kieran Kelleher wrote: Getting EO Modeler in WO 5.2.1 to connect to MySQL 4.0.12 on Windows 2000 is evading us somehow and giving us a dreaded connection error. It works fine on OS X I know it is something to do with Classpaths and the fact that EO Modeler uses a different JDBC connector than WO. 1) If someone out there has MySQL 4.0.XX and WO 5.2.1 Development on Windows 2000 can you tell me what JDBC drivers you have in what folders and what customization, if any you had to do to classpath, connection string, etc.? 2) Should I use the latest Connector/J 3.0.8 with MySQL 4.0.XX or does 2.0.14 work with MySQL 4.0.XX and which JDBC connector is best for WO 5.2.1?
