I just installed Linux-Mandrake 6.1 on my sons machine, and have the
following problems:

1st I believe that there is a conflict between his Creative Vibra128 PCI
sound card and the 3C509 NIC because if I run sndconfig the soundcard is
apparently
detected fine, and plays the test sound but afterwards if I ping my network
the computer TOTALLY locks up, only a hardware reset works.
The NIC works fine as long as I don't try and run sndconfig.

2nd the update icon doesn't work in KDE.

probed it it came up with an error telling me to add (VERIFY N) into the

wondering how I can edit it manually, Ive got all the info from windows

Someone has to help with those configuration problems.

I have been paying around with Linux for about a year now. I still
spend more time in Windows than Linux but that could change if I could
find an email client and new group reader that I like. There is a

Re: [newbie] Kernel

1999-12-20 Thread Chip Wiegand

Indeed, I agree. I have been using Linux for a bit less than a year. I started
with Mandrake 5.3 and now am using Mandrake 6.0. I have figured out enough to
set up ipmasq for my home network, and seem to have screwed up something that
prevents samba from working. I'm no programmer either, though I am not new to
computing. I am in IT and oversee a network of about 45 pc's and several NT
servers at work. I am finally at a level of Linux knowledge that I am doing
99.9% of my work at home in Linux. The other bit of windoze time is spent
studying for the MCSE exams, my company is paying for my MCSE. I figure if I
have my MCSE AND a working knowledge of Linux I'll be that much ahead of the
other guys with just a MCSE cert. Of course my company will want me to stay
forever since they are paying for my education. Anyway, I think Linux has to
become much more 'user friendly' in order to take even more of the desktop
'home' market. Isn't that goal anyway? To give ol' Bill a run for his money. I
love it. More power to the penquin! I appreciate the help I receive from this
mailing list, thank you all. I find it much friendlier than the newsgroups
where you're more likely to see 'rtfm' than a few helpful suggestions. That's
no way to treat the new users to the fold, now is it? If Linux does not become
more user friendly, then the war is over, Bill has won. I certainly hope not!
We must unite and support each other and the people developing Linux to be the
next great OS. I may not be a programer, but if there is something I can do to
help I sure will do it.
Just my two cents worth.
Thanks to all on this list!

Hi,
I have posted this same message for two weeks now on the comp.protocols.smb
group and comp.os.linux.networking and gotten no responses what-so-ever. So I'm
hoping someone in here will be able to help me.

I recently removed my older version of samba and installed 2.0.6
I then set up the smb.conf and ran testparm -s smb.conf | head - 10.
I got an error message -
error in loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libreadline.so.3: undefined symbol:
BC
I checked my hd for the library and found -
libreadline.so.3
libreadline.so.3.0
libreadline.so.4.0
libreadline.a
libreadline.so
I checked my mandrake cd for the library to reinstall it and could not find
this one library on the cd. I have checked several web sites and have not found
this one library.
Are these differant versions conflicting with each other? How do I resolve
this? I can't use samba at all until this is fixed. It fails on bootup and of
course shutdown. I can't get this machine connected to my network at all till
this is fixed.

Then I hate to say it, but it sounds like Windoze is the OS for you.

life's too short... Can anyone help me with the necessary change
and also ask the powers that be to be a little more informative in
the future?

All it takes is a little bit of reading. Unfortunately Linux is not
an OS for someone who doesnt want to learn anything about the OS on
their computer. It is unlikely that it will ever be such an OS.
Windows is the OS for folks who wish to learn nothing and want it all
done for them. Not a flame...just the facts of life.
And it is unlikely that even the Mandrake flavor of linux will ever
be Windoze like in that respect.

Sorry but I have to disagree. Not a 'fact of life' at all. Nor a
flame from me ;-) Why *can't* Linux become 'easier'? It already has.
Isn't this what Mandrake is growing into? An 'easy to use' Linux?

Dennis you make some sensible points of course. Particularly
concerning Linux in its current incarnation. Basically I agree.

But it's too easy to chant RTFM at every new user as if it
were a magical invocation. Please don't take this as a personal
attack. But I feel like Bob Dylan(!), I have to tell you the
times they-are-a-changing. My God Dennis, people expect to
turn their computers on, as we approach the 21st century, and
*use them*. What a thought! How dare they, etc, etc.

That's fine you say, but this is Linux. Scary, hairy Linux.
Well, Linux is changing... (the answer my friend is blowing
in the wind.. ;-)

I'm sorry, but if Mandrake doesn't keep up in the ease
of use stakes then it may well get left behind. (See what
you've done? I'm making threats now ;-)

Linux *will* become 'easy'. It's plain daft to say otherwise.
How come you're using Mandrake rather than Slackware anyway? ;-)

Sir, I accuse you of taking the easy way out and using the
completely ridiculous and 'bloated' command: 'startx'
(without the quotes please ;-)

I personally think the idea of Linux subverting Windows users
is quite delicious (but I used to use Amiga's so I'm warped anyway).
You may find it horrific, but I think it's funny to imagine a future
where (thanks to a KDE theme say) folk actually think they are
running 'Windows'. When in fact Linux is really the OS that is
driving that familiar desktop. Windows doesn't send the blood
surging to my groin to be honest. But a stable 'Windows' (a la KDE,
etc) is fine in my book.

Some folk really do have *things to do* with their computers.
Smart people too. Like, um, doctors and physicists. Would you
rather they were using Windows? Does it matter? I think so.
I like the choice Linux offers. I know you were trying to help,
but why frighten folk away with threats of sometimes well-written
but often dated and techie 'guides'. Waving a 1000 page tome
at someone won't endear them to Linux. Which is a shame.

Particularly as Linux is heading for the desktop one way
or another anyway.

All this ease of use is bad news for die-hard Linux users
I guess. Ah well, there's always four dimensional chess
to while away those long winter evenings.

In a recent interview Linus said that he can see why
Windows has dominated the desktop. That he wants Linux to
do the same. I'll drink to that. Shock horror, but we can
actually learn a few things from Windows. It's not *all* bad
(my God I said it!).

I'm sorry, but given the momentum Linux has, it will happen
regardless of the tantrums of 'true' Linux users who drift
off to sleep every night by reciting the man pages for the
Bash shell to themselves.

But fear not true hackers! There is hope at hand. I hope the
list don't see this as spam, but it does relate to Linux ease
of use, so you will hopefully forgive me from quoting from our
forthcoming catalogue.

In fact I'd like the list to know that I'm working on my own
brand new Linux distribution, not based on Red Hat, which will
cater to all those lost souls who will have nothing to do once
Linux has become 'easy'.

I'm going to call it 'Tapux'. Why Tapux? Well, my distribution
is going to be the first of a new breed of truly radical Linux
distributions.

In the Tapux box, which contains *only* free software, and a
lock of Richard Stallman's hair preserved inside a clear plastic
Gnu, will be the usual CD. Plus two magical extras. A 'keyboard'
with one large space bar and no other characters. And a voucher.
Which entitles you to the finest in medical care. This is necessary
in order to operate Tapux as I'll explain.

I admit the treatment *sounds* radical, but true hackers will
understand the sacrifice. Basically the voucher will enable a
qualified surgeon - but not a Tapux user himself - to humanely
amputate *both* of your arms in a perfectly painless operation.

Of course you can then license your redundant arms (GPL of course)

Win 98 systems (one dual boots LINUX), an Apple iBook with AirPort card
and Station and one LINUX only box. I'd like to use the LINUX box as
either a Proxy or Proxy/Firewall and server, etc. to allow everything
 to
use my printer hooked to one of the Win 98 boxes, limit internet access
in a more secure mode and use the AX25 protocol to add in my amateur
radio packet stuff.

I'm checking out the amateur side of the house now, but need some basic
LINUX information. What I have is now "old", (about 18 months), and a
quick cookbook to get me started will make my hair loss less, I hope!

Thanks as usual in advance for any and all pointers.

Re: [newbie] Kernel

and if I am to, I will need very precise instructions... :-(

Edit the /etc/lilo.conf file. Look for the x.x.x-x parts. Change them
to the new numbers from the update. Look in the /boot directory. You
should have something like 2.2.13-7 files and 2.2.13-22 files. The new
numbers are the later ones (in this example 2.2.13-22). Make sure the
file names match exactly what you are changing in /etc/lilo.conf. If you
don't have files with new numbers, the new kernel didn't install. You
have to download/install it as root.

If you have a line in the /etc/lilo.conf that has "initrd" in it and
it's NOT commented out with a "#" at the beginning of the line, you need
to make one more file to get it all going.

Log in as root on a console or in kde on an xterm. Enter
mkinitrd /boot/initrd-x.x.x-xmdk.img x.x.x-xmdk
Replace the x.x.x-x with your new number. Look in the /boot directory
again. You should have a new initrd file with the new numbers. Change
the initrd line in /etc/lilo.conf to have the new numbers also.

Again, logged in as root on a console, once you have the files names
changed to match your new names that are in /boot, enter
lilo
at the command prompt. It should read your lilo.conf file and put
everything back out so that you can boot. You shouldn't get any
errors. It should come up with the names of the partitions you boot.

Hope the sun shines on you and try rebooting.

Good luck!

And it is unlikely that even the Mandrake flavor of linux will ever be
 Windoze like in that respect.

So I suggest that you set your mind to having to learn something about
 this fantastic OS or ??

I'm SO sick of people that seem to LIKE hurting, telling those of us
that are just not masochists to do this. Until you get some experience,
sometimes only one little piece at a time, the mans mean nothing. Most
of the time, you don't know what to look for. Gee, I'd like to print.
What do I do? Check the FAQ and HOWTO that TRY to help, but just never
seem to apply, or they refer you to another one for a part that has to
work first, which then refers you to the previous one because that part
has to work first... Not everyone learns or understands the same way.
The lilo manual tells you everything you never wanted to know unless you
need that part of it. When you are a brand new Linux user, reading it
and understanding it can take weeks! All you usually need is a small
part of something. Once you understand that part, you can gather more
information relating to it and the next and the next. It sure ain't
magic.

Real multitasking and real multiuser in Linux are great. The rest
hurts. I am not a newbie to the world of computers, programming or
operating systems. I've been in world of hurt since I installed this
OS. I'm learning a little at a time. But it will take me LOTS of time
to figure even some of it out. I actually have a life aside from
learning Linux and I like it MUCH better. Linux is just a tool for me
to use to get something accomplished. I don't worship it. And it's
good none of you know how many times I've wanted to stomp the cd into
dust.

The good part about having the source code is you can change/fix things
if you need to. The bad part about having the source code is you
probably have to.

There are MANY people on this list, that take the time to help those of
us that are lost, to go in the right direction. They do help. The best
help is personal, to the problem you are having. To those, THANK YOU!
Sometimes it's not so difficult to figure out what to do, or where to
find it, as it is what applies. You might get sick of answering the same
question a hundred thousand times, but it just means that there are a
hundred thousand new users with the same problems.

To the rest, just because someone wants to use Linux, that doesn't mean
they want to LIVE it.

Sounds like you've got all of the beginnings working, now it's just time
to tune the behaviour. Go ahead and start X again into that huge

Try the Ctrl-Alt-NumPad+ and Ctrl-Alt-NumPad- key combinations to see if
any of those help with the big desktop issue.

Really, it's just a matter of editing /etc/X11/XF86Config to get rid of
the resolutions that you don't want. But first, make sure that the
 larger resolutions really work.

Drop a note back if this helps.

Re: [newbie] How do I modify /etc/fstab before booting Linux?

1999-12-20 Thread Audrey Beck

If you moved your current Linux parition down in the drive, I believe
you have to redo lilo also. Try booting the boot diskette and see if
you can get at your current drive. If you can, you're in business.

If not, use the boot diskette and a rescue diskette (root file system),
mount your current partition. If your current partition mounts as
/dev/hda2 into /mnt/, then you'd use that. You'll find out if your
partition name actually changed or not. I ended up with hda2 as my
linux parition, but it's the first partition on the drive. The win
parition is hda1 which is the second one. It might be partition magic
and how it lists things in the partition table.

Once you have your current partition mounted, 'chroot /mnt/' to
change over to your current partition. Change the '/mnt/' to your
mount.

Change /etc/fstab and /etc/lilo.conf to point to your current
partition's new name. Then enter 'lilo' and it should rewrite lilo with
the new stuff. I don't believe that lilo writes addresses relative to
the start of the partition, I think it's the whole disk.

 Thanks for all the help,

BTW - a very generous person gave me their copy of Redhat 6.1 Deluxe when
they purchased Redhat 6.1 Professional. I couldn't pass up the opportunity
to install Redhat 6.1, but the partition I made for it lies above the 1024
cylinder boundry. I therefore had to create an extra partition that resides
within the first 1024 cylinders on the disk. I'll then mount this new
partition as /boot so I can boot into Redhat.

Re: [newbie] Startup issues.

1999-12-20 Thread Sam Roza

Steve,

WHen you run "setup" from linux 3 and go through all of your fine-tuning,
you come to the bottom and it says "desktop settings". If you go through
that menu, it will allow you to set your X to start up in "plain X" or KDE.

When I chose "plain X" and did startx, a very plain looking GUI shows up,
and looks great! But you don't get hi-res, and I think for a novice it lacks
quite a bit of functions.

I will go to the config file and look over the samples for monitors and edit
it. I will also go to XFree86.org and do some more reading.

You might try the release notes for 3.3.5 at the XFree website. They

Now I've discovered that I can get my plain GUI to work excellently, but
the

  crappy.

What do you mean "plain GUI"? You mentioned in an earlier message that
you were going to boot with "linux 3"... that will get you just plain
text mode that doesn't have much to do with video card resolutions at
 all.

When the "can you see this message" message pops up after setting up,
everything looks good until the countdown numbers change, then it fails
to
redraw, and all of the numbers and letters write over each other. Makes
me
think this is a Monitor issue...

Well, the monitor only draws what the video card tells it to. I'd look
into deja.com to see if there are any messages from other Cirrus users
that might point out what sorts of problems they've encountered.

My monitor is a Compaq V70 17" monitor Hor. sync 30-69 and Vert. 37.5
@1280x1024. It is not in the monitor list, and when I set custom params,
I
choose the closest to it, and I get garbage, go as low as
possible...same
  effect.

Are you comfortable editing /etc/X11/XF86Config? You can set the
correct parameters in that file. Won't make alot of difference until
you get the video card issues sorted out though...

Re: [newbie] Startup issues.

1999-12-20 Thread Hidong Kim

Hi, Sam,

If you're still getting that huge screen that requires you to scroll the
mouse to see the entire thing, you may not have the "Virtual" parameter
set in your /etc/X11/XF86Config. The Virtual parameter should be set to
the same pixel resolution that you want to see on the screen. For
example, I like 1024 x 768 at 32 bpp for my machine. Here's a piece
from my /etc/X11/XF86Config:

Section "Screen"
Driver "svga"
# Use Device "Generic VGA" for Standard VGA 320x200x256
#Device "Generic VGA"
Device "mystique"
Monitor "vivitron"
Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
# Omit the Modes line for the "Generic VGA" device
Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024"
ViewPort0 0
# Use Virtual 320 200 for Generic VGA
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024"
ViewPort0 0
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768" "1280x1024"
ViewPort0 0
EndSubsection
Subsection "Display"
Depth 32
Modes "1024x768"
ViewPort0 0
Virtual 1024 768
EndSubsection
EndSection

Notice in the Depth 32 section, I have one screen resolution mode and
the same resolution for the Virtual parameter. I edited this file
manually after running xf86config. I start X with 'startx -- -bpp 32'.
This starts X in 32 bits per pixel, which according to the
/etc/X11/XF86Config defaults to a screen resolution of 1024 x 768. Hope
this helps. Good luck,

Hidong

correct, I had very few problems w/ w95 oem during my last few months (after 3
yrs of much headaches, tweaking reinstalling, patches, etc...). However w/
Linux, if something happens to go wrong, you can fix it. May take a little
trouble, but once it's fixed, it's fixed (no problems so far). As far as I'm
concerned, Linux isn't some GOD of OS, but yet a system unique to windows users
that offers a platform that can be customized to one's needs w/o purchasing
expensive software. For what you save in $$, you spend in time, but you also
gain more knowledge of the inner workings of your OS. I'm just taking it
slowly now, got video, got sound, got ISP connectivity, got SO installed, so
I'll just make little steps, get some books, and maybe in a few months, I'll be
better prepared to tackle Linux more in depth. And this list has been a
lifesaver! To all willing to help out a poor newbie, Thanks!

Hi,
I've been following the threads on getting a sblive card to work with Linux.
I tried all the steps outlined in a previous link suggested
(www.linuxnewbie.org), and as outlined herein, pretty much.
At the step where you run the "make" command, I get this error: bash: make:
command not found.

Can anyone tell me what is wrong here? I'm using LM 6.5 with a typical

How do I run the "make" command?

OK enough name calling. Lets see if we can keep this civil.

I, myself being a newbie, had the same problem as you. I
did however manage to get the silly thing to work by following
 the directions
included with the readme that gets unzipped from the tarball.
 Note however
that I found them to be a little confusing but by stumbling
 around I finally
figured it out. Let's see if we can keep you from having the
 same problem.
I'm going to assume you have very little knowledge (like myself)
 so forgive me

if I go into too much detail, it's easier than assuming too much.

NO RECOMPILING OF THE KERNEL SHOULD BE NEEDED, so don't panic. 8-)

 1. log in as root ( I selected KDE as my login simply because I
 could easily
open windows and move file around)

 2. download the latest tarball from
 http://opensource.soundblaster.com to a
 temporary folder in your home

 3. disconnect from the Internet (don't want to stay connected to long for
 security reasons)

 4. from the KDE menu bar open your home directory and select the
 folder where

 you downloaded the tarball

 5. with the cursor over the window press "CTRL + T" to open a
 terminal window
(or open it from the file pull down menu)

 6. in the new terminal window type "tar xvzf
 emu10k1.whatever.the.name.is".
this should create a sub folder which will contain a whole bunch of files.
the 2 important ones to you will be the readme and a "makefile",
 sorry I think

 that's the name.

 7. tag the readme file and in there will be a whole lotta scary
 words like
recompile and kernel - IGNORE THEM. just leave this window open
 so you can
 follow the directions.

 8. using the "UP ARROW" buttons in your home window back out to
 the "root"
directory and find the "/etc" folder and then the
 "/etc/conf.modules" file.
right mouse click it and tag it. this should open an editor
 window and you
can proceed screw things up from there (just kidding).

 9. do a "save as" from the file pull down menu to give yourself
 a back up,
something like old.conf.modules and close the window.

Very important here. if you don't close the file after saving
 and editing it
the computer will NOT recognize the saved information - this cost
 me several
days of head banging trying to figure out what I did wrong.

 10. refresh the folder window and select the "conf.modules" file.
 this shooed
open the file in a new editor window.

 11. the readme file tells you to remove the lines referring to
 "soundcore".
go ahead and remove them (if you've got any, it is possible you
 may not if you

haven't installed any other sound cards) then add the "alias
-something-something- sound" line at the end of the file per the "readme"
 file.

 12. next add the two lines referring to the "insmod
 -something-something" (can

you tell I have a poor memory and am not sitting in front of my linux box
 8-)).

 13. save the file and CLOSE the editor, you're done with the scary part.

 14. go back to your "home" directory window and press the home icon in the
tool bar. next select the temp folder with the downloaded
 tarball file, then
the "emu10k1" sub folder until you see the "readme" and "makefile" files
again. now open a terminal window (CTRL + T). important, you
 must be in the
sub folder when doing the next step.

 15. now you're ready to compile the sound module

 a. type "make"
 b. type "make clean"
 c. type "make install"

the "make install should take care of copying the "emu10k1.0"
 file the proper
directory for you as instructed by the "readme" file.

 16. YOU'RE

The NIC works fine as long as I don't try and run sndconfig.

echo "irqs --" junk
cat /proc/interrupts junk
echo "io --" junk
cat /proc/ioports junk
echo "conf.modules --" junk
cat /etc/conf.modules junk

This will give you a list of what is being used for irqs and addresses
for your cards, and how the system is trying to set them up, in the file
called "junk" (you can change the name). If you just want to see them
on the screen, don't do the echo commands and don't do the " junk" or

[newbie] Installing via PLIP

1999-12-20 Thread Jim Ockers

I have been attempting to install Mandrake via PLIP with little success. I have
been following the PLIP Install HOWTO v1.15, 26 Nov 1999; adapting it for the
particular distribution I wish to install.

I have been successful in setting up the source side: I can mount the cdrom
via nfs, it appears I have the exports, hosts.allow, and hosts.deny file
configured correctly.

I am struggling to get the target to accept PLIP. I use the bootnet.img file
and select NFS install. Upon loading the PLIP module (autoprobe) I receive
"I can't find the device anywhere on your system!"

following are the last three lines from console ALT-F3:

* picked driver PLIP (parallel port)
* running: /bin/insmod /bin/insmod /modules/plip.o
* insmod failed!

and the line from console ALT-F5

Cannot find archive member plip.o: file does not exist in archive

I have tried the bootnet.img disk from 3 different machines with the same
result and it appears I have the latest image from the ftp mirrors I've searched
(Dated Sept. 7 and Sept. 8 1999--exact same file size).

Am I using the wrong image or neglecting some important boot: options??

Any insight would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks,
-Jim O.

Re: [newbie] A question (kinda long)

1999-12-20 Thread Seth Gibson

On Sun, 19 Dec 1999, Ernest N. Wilcox Jr. wrote:

First there is the reason Linux is so difficult for the new user. Linux does
not try to support all hardware combinations imaginable, and it only installs
support for what is really needed on the system (I'm guessing here).

Yah also linux handles hardware communication more efficiently than win. Lots o' 1s
and
0s get lost in Windows's software layer between the main OS and the hardware,
which i suspect is also one of the reasons Windows is so bloated. I mean it's
alot easier to just open a file and then write out data to the open file
descriptor (as linux does) rather than talking to a driver which in turn
interprets that to the hardware. . .there's a great description of device file
handling in Linux Programming Unleashed if anyone wants more specifics. . .

Second and I suspect the real reason for stability is the fact that Linux
starts in "protected mode" and remains there throughout the session, while
Windows 9x starts in "real mode", then switches to "protected mode" when it
starts the GUI. But then at the same time, DOS is still running in "real mode"
underneath the rest of Windows 9x - which is operating in protected mode?!

Actually the way windows uses processor states is really loopy (big
surprise eh?). It's like. . .it starts in v86, then dips into pmode long
enough to activate pmode memory addressing, then falls back into v86 mode. So
its like. . .running DOS but being able to see all the memory without an
ems/xms driver. So we're doing a really phased out hybrid of 20 bit addressing
and 32 bit addressing, in which case im pretty sure preemptive multitasking is
not possible. That in mind, when you run multiple apps under windows, you
essentially have a bunch of things floating around in this one big shared
memory/resource pool. Inevitably, some of them are going to request
resources that are unavailable, ie an in use memory space, or request the
services of an already in use library or something like that. Under ideal
circumstances windows will just say oops cant do that and wait till the
resource is open, but as we all probably know, that usually doesnt happen.):
The AMD K6 Multimedia Technology Manual has a really good write up on
different multitasking environments. Also one of the guys from the demogroup
Triton wrote a really neat paper on pmode memory access under v86 mode. . .i think its
somewhere on scene.org if anyone wants to read up on that. Windows also manages
virtual machines really strangely. It will actually start up VMs in different
processor states, ie it can start one up in pmode, then one in v86 mode
depending on what kind of app is being run. . .probably one of the
reasons that running win3.1 apps under win9x is not really advocated. . .putting
the two together=badness. . .therein being another linux coolness. Since X
isnt in itself another OS, ie its just a separate program, there is no need for
X to set its own machine state up, as windows does. All of linux's VMs are in
pmode.

Maybe someone can explaine better than I. It just seems to me that Windows is
going about the thing in too complex a maner, while Linux is doing it the
 simple and elegant way.

yah. . .and at the same time its like. . .windows is really specific about what
it needs to run and linux is sorta abstract about things, or i guess
adaptable is a better term. . .its like one of my friends comparison between
Direct3D and OpenGL The developers of OpenGL (sgi) were/are 3D pros who
probably said, "how can we make a really functional open api that displays fast,
stable 3D graphics, will work in a slew of different operating environments, and
is also easy to implement?", whereas the designers of DX/D3D probably said "hmm
we need to figure out how to be able to do fast 3D gfx in Windows so people
will stop writing games in DOS." The result being that sgi turned out a pretty
well built, sleek, easy to use, OPEN api, and MS turned out a rather bloated,
not that easy to use, platform dependent api that does what it needs to and
nothing else. I mean over in the windows world we'er all ooing and ahhing
about the fact that DX7 has hardware T/L but OpenGLs had it forever. to go
off on a tangent, its like that great scene in firebirds where Nick Cage and
Tommy Lee J are in the chopper doing a simulated night time flight and Cage is
pretty much chowing. Cage says "im doing it' im doing it!!" and Tommy L
replies "yeah but youre doing it ugly."

.. . .although i gotta say id love to see Cubase for linux. . .

to me. I think I know what it is.

Thanks for the suggestion, but there is a slight problem...
 I am already _at_ 1024 X 780.
 sigh
Even if I knew _how_ to go finer, I wouldn't do it... on a 15" monitor, it's
already small enough (strangely enough my ctrl-alt-numpad+,- thingie doesn't
 change my display)
 grrr...
there must be some way to access these menus...
 Any other suggestions?

Hi Phil, I did the same thing myself. Only way I could fix it was to
change the resolution to at least 1024 x 780. Though that is drastic, but
  it did the trick.

First off, I just want to say that i installed my first LINUX system a
few days ago, and apart from a few hangups, everything has been running
great. I am very happy with the learning curve. Just sitting back and
watching the emails has been a great catalyst for my own solutions. But
there is one annoying little problem I still have and can't figure out
  how to fix

Can you please tell me how to see the bottom (unviewable) portion of the
KDE popup menus? My Utility menu is too large (vertically) to fit on
screen, and, while it may be amusing for you all to contemplate, I have
been forced to count and memorize how many arrow hits I made from the
moment the focus went off-screen in order to access these apps.

I'm sure the answer is quite obvious, but I just can't get it.

  thanks,
