The SuSE X server for the rage 128 is in the "apps" directory on the 6.1

IMHO this would probably work much better than the XF86_Mach64 SVGA one.

[newbie] Pointer Sticking

2000-02-05 Thread Larry Varney

I have installed Mandrake 7.0, and I love it. The new XFree86 handles my
video card (Savage3D) much better than before, and my on-board sound chip
(Maestro) now functions, too.
But: frequently my mouse pointer will freeze up, sometimes first jumping to
the upper-right and freezing there, and there's nothing I can do (I guess) but
do a ctrl-alt-backspace, and then the pointer is "free" again.
Of course, this disconnects my modem, too, and is a pain otherwise. Does
anyone else have this problem? And, does anyone have a solution?

Thanks!

Subject: [newbie] How do I install Mandrake to a 2nd IDE hard drive?

I've been reading all the good reviews on Mandrake 7. I'm interested in
giving it a try due to its easy install feature. The last time I tried to
install Linux, I totally screwed up my system. However Mandrake 7 looks
like
a fairly easy install with most of what I want already included in the
distribution. So I think I will give it another go.

 I have one question:

I have two IDE hard drives in my computer (c: drive is a 6GB d: drive is
a
4GB). I have Windows 98 on the 6GB drive, and really nothing on the 4GB.
For
my Mandrake 7 install, I would really like to keep Windows on my 6GB and
install Mandrake on the 4GB (and give Mandrake full access to the whole
4GB
drive), and use some sort of boot manager to toggle between the two at
boot
up (I guess LILO, unless if there is something better). I've looked
everywhere on the Internet, and found that most pages that explain how to
have Windows and Linux installed on the same machine, all explain how to
do
the install on the same drive. I haven't found any sites that explain how
to
install Linux on a 2nd drive.

Do any of you know of any sites that would explain how to install Mandrake
7
to an empty 2nd drive in a very step-by-step way?

 Thanks for you information!

 Greg

You could use something like Boot Magic to boot to your other drive or LILO.
I have 2 similar setups and I use LILO on one and the version of Boot Magic
that came with the 6.1 dist. that I bought (Macmillian 6.5). You should
download the ISO of 7.0 and boot directly to CD, it'll walk you right
through the LILO setup.

[newbie] Who runs an intern ISDN Card with MD 6.1 ?

2000-02-05 Thread Klaus Peter Elsner

Hi to everyone out

I've tried to install ISDN for a few days and now I found it a bit boring =:-(
I use MD 6.1 ; have got a CD for testing. I found an
"kisdn-1.0.1_2-mdk6-kde-1.1.i386.rpm" but it seems to
be bad. I got an error installing the rpm.

By downloading I only found an Kisdn_1.1.. package ( no mdk Version! ) The
above isn't at MD nor
RedHat.
I installed the newer. It seems to work until I want to get an connection.

I only get an error after "ifconfig ippp0 up" that "dialing of ippp0 failed"
So, what's wrong ?

I tested the IPPP0 dev with isdnctrl list ippp0 - everyline seems to be ok
"isdnctrl dial ippp0" brings up the same error msg.

What I found ( or better not found ) are the scripts / files mentioned in some docs at
/etc/isdn and
/etc/ppp. As I know there have to be a few pointing to ippp0. I can't find any. only
the defaults

is it possible that MD uses an other way to save their scripts and running isdn?

Hardware has been tested ( with SUSE Linux - installed and ready to go! It works as
it has to do)
Hisax shows the same EA ; IRQ ;... like the one installed at MD.

Questions:
is there an other way to test the ISDN calling by hand as I 've done with loading all
the parts with isdnctrl
into ippp0 and then using "isdnctrl dial ippp0"?
Who has a running ISDN connection?
Who is willing to help me?
( please don't write " Why don't you use SUSE if you had it up and go ?! " I want to
UNDERSTAND why
it's ( not ) running! so please help (if you can)

[newbie] Getting more than 8bpp from Xfree86?

2000-02-05 Thread Paul Derbyshire

The system recognizes that I can do more than 8bpp. My XF86Config file
lists 8, 16, and 32bpp entries under the "accel" device, which it is using,
as the X server version actually in use is XF86_MACH64 or something similar
with MACH64 in the name (I have a 4meg video card with the ATI Mach64
chipset and it's sweet).

Obviously, it is choosing the 8bpp mode. Apparently, the way to get other
bpp is with something like

startx -- -bpp 16

or

startx -- -bpp 32

but I've grepped my root filesystem upwards, downwards, sideways, and
inside-out and can't find where startx is being (automatically) run at
startup. I looked in rc, rc.local, rc.sysinit, and inside the rc.5
directory (I *think* starting the X server is runlevel 5 stuff?) in
/etc/rc.d, then I tried grepping from "/", and nowhere does startx appear
in anything resembling a bootup script. Nor do the afore-mentioned things
in the rc.d directory appear to contain anything to do with starting the X
server. As near as I can determine, the X server isn't actually being run
at startup, and while I type at a root console I hallucinate the KDE :-)

[newbie] Config Problems

2000-02-05 Thread root

Recently my NT server which contained the gateway for my network
connection to cable modem died. I am attempting to set up a Mandrake 7.0
(Air) box to act as a firewall and router. The computer in question is
an HP Pavilion 200 mmx Pentium with 32 MB of ram and a 4+gb drive. The
connection to the Cable Modem is a 3c509b (eth0) and the network card
for my internal network is a Genius GE2500III (windows and another
redhat box use the realtek 8129 drivers) (eth1).

Both ethx cards fail during startup, I can do an insmod on the 3c509
driver and get it running as eth0, but I cannot get the eth1 card up at
all. Lothar shows only 1 card and calls it a realtek 8029 and says that
it is
running, the 3c509 is not shown.

I have attempted to compile a fresh kernel in hopes of getting both
cards to work, but have been unable, even though I have loaded all the
development modules. when i go to "/usr/src/linux" and do a "make
xconfig, or make menuconfig" I get a message saying "make: *** No rule
to make target `xconfig'. Stop"

I had planned to use this computer as a firewall and network server, but
I am dead in the water until I can solve the ehternet modules problem.
Any help would be appreciated.

thanks in advance

Hmm... yes, cable modems *do* work in linux. are realy they arent that hard to
setup if you know what you are doing. DHCP isnt that hard to do (ok, flame me
here). All linux cares about with cable modems is the ethernet card that its
connected to and some simple numbers you stick in for it to connect to the
network. BTW, i think you`ll be better off with DSL in the long run b/c you
wont have to share your bandwith w/ your neighbors when they get cable in 6

When booting, type "linux 3" at the boot prompt. This will boot linux w/o x.

Your thinking of ISDN maybe its only a little faster then 56k
Uploads on DSL are mush faster then cable and you get the same speed all the
time no matter how mant people are logged on.. With cable you will see lots of
fall off when many are using the system at the same time

FYI... I just did a quick search to see what the actual speed on a T3 is,
and found these stats.
I do agree that it really depends on your ISP, distance from the ISP and you
individual PCs, and the package you buy, but...

Cable Modem 30 Mbps (down)
ADSL Modems 1-9 Mbps (down)
T-1 1.54 Mbps
T-3 44.7 Mbps

so cable modems are much closer (in ability) to a T3 than dsl.

My cable modem is supposed to be capped at 512kbs (bits not bytes) up and
down, but when I DLed RedHat two days ago I got an average of 3.09Mbs. I got
the entire file (just under) 650 megabytes in 36 minutes.

The updates are all RPM's, might still be stored in your top

2000-02-05 Thread Zulfiqar Naushad

Quite easy actually.

Firstly, You need to make sure that your computer supports a bootable
CD.

Most new computers do support this feature, hence it shouldn't be a
problem.

Go into the BIOS and make sure that BOOT FROM CD is set to ON or
YES

Also make sure that the boot sequence in the BIOS is set to
CDROM,A,C

put in a bootable CD in your cdrom drive, hit the reset button, and let
the magic happen :-)

To boot from CD, you have to go into cmos and change the
boot order. If your cmos does not support it, boot to DOS
with cd suppport, switch to the cdrom (the man7 one), change
to the DOS folder, and run MAKEDISK. It will make a disk
(floppy) that you can use to boot to the cdrom for installation.

Log in as root open etc/inetd.confand comment out the services
you dont want too run. You can also configure TCP wrappers to block
much. Its good to lock down services you dont need as they can be
used to hack into your system

I forgot to secure with TCP wrappers open the hosts dent file and
add a line all : all. this will deny connection to your
services and is a basic first step to secure your computer

Unless I am corrected LOLWhich will be likely :)

linuxconf (L-M 6.1) does not tell me what each of the services do. I

A couple of things it might be.
Check all your connections to CD also.
1)ATAPI CD that is not recognised. I had a Delta 44X that would NOT work...I
toss in my Toshiba 32X...BINGO..:)
2) Bad ISO d/l...therefore bad CD burn -re d/l try again
3) bad CD burn - re d/l try again...probably with 7.0 release 2
4) Spend $1.99 at a Linux site and get a pro copy of 7.0

I take it I should re-install it from the CDRom and then what?
Should I download the new Xfree86 version 3.3.6 ? (which supports ATI Rage

And if I do, I'd have to do it through Windoze...how will I be able to get

Just my $0.02:

Make an image file called default.jpg (or whatever).
Now set your background to that.
Now make a script that dwnlds the latest radar image, then mv's it to
default.jpg (overwriting of course).
Now make sure you can autorefresh your desktop.

Hi
Christopher,

If you are
trying to boot from windows:

To boot
from a cd, go to your bios and make sure you have cd as a choice, try making it
your first choice. Then save your
changes and get out of your cmos. Place
the cd you want to boot from and restart your machine. That should do it.

Subject: RE: [newbie] How do I install Mandrake to a 2nd IDE hard drive?

Hello Greg,

I am a newbie also and have successfully installed Mandrake 7.0 on a second
ide drive. Mandrake 7.0 will ask you during the installation where to
install. I don't quite remember the step, but I believe it is the selection
for partitioning your drive, you will see selections that look like this:
Fat 32 [this actually refers to your c: drive, the 6gb or
the drive with Windows
Hdb1 [this is actually your d: drive]
This is the drive you want to install on; just check it first because it
shows you the size of the drive you select (something like 4100k).

!BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO SELECT THE FAT 32 PARTITION!!!

I wouldn't worry much about this installation, it is very smooth. I have
tried mandrake 6.0, 6.1, suse 6.3,
Caldera openlinux 2.3, red hat 6.0, and corel linux deluxe edition. All of
my mandrake distributions have gone well except that this time, for the very
first time, I have been able to install fairly easily and also get my SBLive
sound card to work without me doing anything special.

The last step helps you install LILO so you can type linux or windows to
load the respective operating system.

This is good stuff man. I hope you try installing and have fun doing so.
Let me know if it works.

Good Luck.

Subject: [newbie] How do I install Mandrake to a 2nd IDE hard drive?

I've been reading all the good reviews on Mandrake 7. I'm interested in
giving it a try due to its easy install feature. The last time I tried to
install Linux, I totally screwed up my system. However Mandrake 7 looks like
a fairly easy install with most of what I want already included in the
distribution. So I think I will give it another go.

I have one question:

I have two IDE hard drives in my computer (c: drive is a 6GB d: drive is a
4GB). I have Windows 98 on the 6GB drive, and really nothing on the 4GB. For
my Mandrake 7 install, I would really like to keep Windows on my 6GB and
install Mandrake on the 4GB (and give Mandrake full access to the whole 4GB
drive), and use some sort of boot manager to toggle between the two at boot
up (I guess LILO, unless if there is something better). I've looked
everywhere on the Internet, and found that most pages that explain how to
have Windows and Linux installed on the same machine, all explain how to do
the install on the same drive. I haven't found any sites that explain how to
install Linux on a 2nd drive.

Do any of you know of any sites that would explain how to install Mandrake 7
to an empty 2nd drive in a very step-by-step way?

Thanks for you information!

Greg

RE: [newbie] Mandrake 7.0 Problem...

2000-02-05 Thread Foyah Z. Freeman, Jr.

I am a newbie also and face similar modem problem. I solved my by
purchasing the 56K Internal Call Waiting Modem from Actiontec (I do not
remember the number), it has drivers for linux in there. This is the actual
instructions I had to write as root to enable my modem:
Step A. cat /proc/pci
This will produce lines of outcome that begin with
something like:
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0x000.
This may vary on your pc.
.
Medium devsel. Fast back-toback capable. IRQ 11.
.
.
.
.
.
.
I/O at 0x6400.
I/O at 0x6800 The port and irq might be different on your pc.
I/O at 0x6c00

Step B. Pay attention to the IRQ, and First I/O address and type in the
following command:
setserial /dev/modem uart 16550A port 0x6400 irq 11 my system required
/dev/ttyS0, you may try that also.

Step C. In order for Linux to configure the modem at boot-up, head to I had
to head to /etc/rc.d/ directory and usuing a text editor, I edited
the rc.local file and inserted: setserial /dev/modem uart 16550A port
0x6400 irq 11

This worked for my modem on my system. I don't know how these things work
but if you want to try this, you can first post this info and see if anyone
would know if might help.

Good Luck.

[newbie] 2.2.13-22 kernel update

2000-02-05 Thread Joseph S. Gardner

OK, I was looking for an update for the stdlibc and gcc gcc+
libraries and such (got tired of installing software that
required one library or another that didn't install when
I selected "everything" from the 6.1 install) so me thinks "Let's
try the update button on the KDE panel".

Stupid move. Every thing d/l'd fine so I reboot and my machine
erupts. I get " ~^[[24~^[[24 "'s streaming across my screen,
the internal speaker is screaming as the filesystem is being
mounted (NOT a pleasant thing at 12:30 am). Doah, I forgot to
edit /etc/lilo.conf to reflect the new 2.2.13-22 kernel and rerun
lilo. OK that's done but I still have the same problem and any
time I enter into a terminal mode my screen again erupts into
streaming " ~~" anytime I look at it crosseyed and seem
to be having general keyboard problems typing this. I also now
get an error msg that my kernel does not have kppp support but
launches it anyway when I hit "OK".

This folks is rediculous, I suppose it's my fault for trying to
fix something that wasn't broke but all I wanted was the
libraries that should have loaded in the first place.

Please, anyone got any suggestions

Joe Gardner
