I installed Linux, but felt I did not do a good enough job so i decided to delete the partition. When I got to Windows, I used the delete Linux partition option that PartitionMagic gave me. When the computer rebooted, I went through the steps of the dos delete linux partition program, and it seemed as though it had worked. When the computer re-booted, Lilo gave me the same three options as usual : windows, linux, and floppy. Whether or not linux should still be listed as an option or whether I should have entered lilo at all is a different question, because when i typed linux just in case, it doesn't work anyways. ( the floppy option is also not the problem ) My real problem is that when i type in "windows" the computer goes to the partitionMagic dos program that says "the Linux partition could not be deleted. That operating system partition to be deleted was not found." This program gives me only the option to click ok, and when i do so, the computer reboots and when i type windows again under lilo, the same problem occurs. I have heard several responses, none of which I have gotten to work. I made a boot disk on my other windows computer ( typing sys a: at dos prompt at other computer ). I then put the disk into the computer and it booted up into a dos prompt. People told me to type fdisk /mbr, which i did at both the a and the c prompt, but neither recognized it. I also typed win / win98 / windows, but that didn't work either. I can't get back into my computer ( windows ), so please try to solve my problem. THANKS A MILLION, me

[newbie] Boot up modules
Hi, Whenever I log on I can play CDs but not system sounds on my SB Live!. I have the kaudioserver and kwmsound in the $KDEDIR/bin/startkde file but these do not seem to be started. Also, the settings are always muted (default behaviour). After some investigation found that snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss (allows backward compatibility) modules are not loaded. When I modprobe these and exec kaudioserver and kwmsound I get systems sounds. My question is, if I want to load these modules at bootup, which file do I put them in ? I want to be able to use sound in all shells. Also, can I put the 'amixer set XXX unmute' settings along side these ? What is the normal convension ? Thanks in advance, Michael

Re: [newbie] questions
Usually the INSTALL file is one that tells you how to install. But clicking it should just open the text file...strange. You might click on README and see what's in that file. To install, you would normally open a console and cd into the directory that untarring created, then type './configure'. When that is done, type 'make'. When that is done, type 'make install' (All those commands w/o quotes). That should get you going. Re: Bluefish, did you also try just giving the command from a console? Re: [newbie] help me please
Assuming you are using KDE do the following: - Clean up and delete any driver-related files you have right now in your home dir (except the tarball) - Click on the home directory icon on your taskbar - Right-click on the driver tarball file - Select Archiver - This will open Archiver. Click on the magnifying glass icon to extract. Don't change any of the defaults, and hit OK - The make files for the driver will now be in their own directory. - Open a terminal icon and change into the newly created directory - Type su to become root - type make install (or whatever you need for your type of card) That should do it. [newbie] Internet: slow connection, thrown out.....
-- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Doellbachstraße 15 34127 Kassel Joerg Reinhardt Hi, I'm using the german telecom to come into the net. Datastream-speed is something about 1.5K/sec, even less most of the time and they do throw me out the net, from Time to time (especially in very long Downloads...) I complaint about this redicoulous speed of data-transfer (56,7K baud Modem should bring more, I guess, and sometimes it does(up to 5.0), but only for seconds or minutes) and about been thrown out the connection after 3h 58min downloading Starsoft (now I have 98% of it, but nothing worth at all). While complaining, they stayed polite and helpfull till the point I mentioned my system is running on Linux! After their opinion, Linux is some non-professional freaky-stuff, and so every PROBLEM (even the speed of incomming data) is MY PROBLEM!!! Can anyone give me a few good arguments for those F-'s, to tell them that it is NOT MY problem!! They say their is no command for doing it, so I wonder what kind of command they are sending me, when I try to dialup with wrong password. I tryed, just to see and it was identically (checked it with the ppd-monitor) to that, what I received when I was thrown out at this download. I also asked for a second ISP-Adress, cause I guess having only one is what causes the trouble, they told me their can be only one ISP-Adress per domain (propably what they mean is, that their is box in the menue, of THEIR-Internet-entry-windoze-software-CDRom, to put a second address in, but what do I care? their is space for two more Adresses in my default-route-setup and even Telnet gave me two!) My problem is, I'm not a computer expert and if one's questions or mails are not cryptically enought written in experts terms, telecom just ignores them and do send an answer like (If your Internet isn't working properly, check if plug is in!) What to do? Change the Provider? Are the others really faster? Is their anything what telecom could do for solving my problem (cause that would be the easiest way for me, otherwise I got to skip the contract. If I could tell them where THEIR problem is, they couldn't ignore me longer and might solve it instead). Anyone experienced with telecom that way? Joerg

[newbie] SB16PNP
Hi, Ok..so I installed Mandrake, and all went well. No errors, all looks good. BUT the SB16PNP (ISA) card doesn't seem to "work". That is, I get no errors that it can not find the card, or any other errors but no sound no matter what I do. Tried playing an audio CD and no luck... I went through the list archives, and checked out my isapnp.conf file and all looks well inside that. Does anyone have any ideas? My SB is configured for IRQ 5, DMA1/5, I/O 0220, 0330, 0388 (according to Win98 System Properties for my SB). Also are there any TV viewer drivers/software available for Linux? I have a TV tuner card, and it would be nice to be able to use this. It is an ADS Channel Surfer (if anyone is familiar with the brand). Finally -- no luck with my internet connection. I use a cable modem with ethernet card (like there is any other way, right...), but I'll try out some of the tips found in the mailing list archives and see what happens. Is there such a thing as a Win98 emulator for Linux? It would be nice to be able to use some of my Windows software that isn't available for Linux. Thanks for your help! Regards, Mohammed

Re: [[newbie] Internet: slow connection, thrown out.....]
Well to begin with you will NEVER, EVER hear an ISP say it was their problem...it is ALWAYS the clients, they will blame anything and everything...but themselves. As far as I know..once you have connected to the 'Net...your system is like anyone elses while surfing, ie:modem, multimedia, files...it doesn't matter. Also since most of the protocols/file structures used on the Net are based on UNIX, there should be better compatibility. As long as there are no problems with you modem setup, it is like any other modem. As for the disconnects, there are Linux similar programs for RESUMING d/l's, I saw a bunch of them yesterday( similar to BulletProofFTP, CuteFTP, etc...), on one of the RPM sites..(sorry I forget which one...I was site hopping), you may be able to finish the d/l or maybe not...(not sure because you didn't START the d/l with it). Also there are many reasons for getting dropped from your ISP..UNLESS you can state that EVERY 10 mins ( or whatever)you get dropped. As for ISP's yes some are better than other's...talk to friends ask who they use... also look into some of the free providers...they can serve as a backup. I would like to do that...but I have cable, and when I install my jumpered C.L. 56K modem...it takes over on my internet connection. Sorry for my long windedness...:) HTH Jaguar [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Joerg Reinhardt) wrote: -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Doellbachstraße 15 34127 Kassel Joerg Reinhardt Hi, I'm using the german telecom to come into the net. (Modem is working great, so it is not mv Problem, or Is it) They denied, that it can happen, that their System throws someone out. Re: [newbie] SB16PNP
Well, I am no expert, but I can try to help you a bit. Firstly, this is what I do to get my Cable modem working. as root run netconf. Go to basic host information, then set eth0 to enabled, and select either bootp or dhcp, so it will get the ip info automatically. Also, then set the kernel module to the one that corresponds with your card. What network card do you have? I have a Netgear FA310TX and that is tulip compatible, so i just select the tulip driver and reboot the system, and everything works fine for me. Re: [newbie] ld-linux.so
I don't know either, but I have traced it down to NETSCAPE. It seems like some library that netscape uses. When netscape goes belly up, ld-linux.so doesn't get killed along with it, and you have to do it by hand. balut wrote: What exactly does the process ld-linux.so do? Re: [newbie] PartitionMagic won't let me run windows
Samduring the installation of Partition Magic you were supposed to make a pair of floppies. Disc 1 of that pair is self booting and asks for disc 2 during the boot process. I assume that when you were prompted do do this step (making the floppies) during your installation of Partition Magic you refused/skipped the process. There are directions in a read.me type file on the CD of how to make those very same floppies when you don't have a windows machine to install Partition Magic on. You need to find these directions and make the floppies and boot your system with them which brings up a dos version of Partition Magic. Then using Partition Magic, you need to make the dos partition ACTIVE. Window will not boot unless it is on the only ACTIVE partition on the drive. Linux, however doesn't care one way or another about ACTIVE partitions. Anyway then your windows system should again be able to boot. If it still doesn't boot then you also need a windows boot floppy with a copy of fdisk.com on it. After booting to dos with the windows boot floppy, type fdisk /mbrafter which the windows system should finally boot. Good luck. [newbie] Gender Problem
Can anyone tell me how to change the icon on the Mandrake login screen. My Penguin has pigtails, and I am a guy. Not a huge problem but it does look a little silly, Thanks Dave O'Braden
[newbie] Login
Ok, so I have the installation done, and am able to get to the opening page which says: local host login and right below that, password. I put the information is, and it gets rejected. How do I get past this point? Also, why do I need a password in the first place? I got the CD in the mail and proceeded to spend 4 hours installing it. I'd sure like to use it sometime to see what all the fuss is about. I sure don't like Windows, and would like to have an alternative that works smoother. John Houll

Re: [newbie] Internet: slow connection, thrown out.....
Joerg, Tell them you know of someone in Austria connecting by ppp using Linux who has no problems. Tell them, if the Austrians can support Linux, CERTAINLY the Germans can! You know, appeal to their national pride! Seriously, though, I've tried a couple of different isp in Austria, and I have experienced EXACTLY the same problem as you from time to time. With one isp, it happened so often (95% of the time) that I changed -- and at that time I was using Windoze and the dial-up software provided by the isp itself. With my new provider, it still occurs from time to time -- both when I was using Win98 and now with Linux. My solution is to log off and dial up again. It seems to be worst just after the connection rates go down (e.g., 1815), so I think it has to do with traffic. When I notice that the emails are downloading so slowly, I check the transmission. When it's bad, I cancel, log off, and dial back up. Often I will get a normal speed (for me usually 5+K/sec) and then things work fine. It seems to me that when the transfer is SO slow as you are describing, you aren't kicked off, rather, something more similar to the connection timing out happens -- so little data is transferred that the connection is simply lost. By the way, when I downloaded Star Office, I was having one of those bad connection days with my provider. I found that the download actually stopped if I didn't move my mouse every couple of minutes. So, instead of starting the download and going to watch a movie, I had to sit in front of the computer for 4 hours moving the mouse every couple of minutes. Don't know if that problem is related, but you might keep your eyes out when doing a big download. Lance Joerg Reinhardt wrote: -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] Doellbachstraße 15 34127 Kassel Joerg Reinhardt Hi, I'm using the german telecom to come into the net. (Modem is working great, so it is not mv Problem, or Is it) They denied, that it can happen, that their System throws someone out. Joerg
Re: [newbie] Login
How are you trying to log in? During the installation you should have set up an account for "root" w/a password, and at least one user account w/password. If you've been trying the user name and password, give it a shot as root: i.e., the username or login name is 'root' (w/o quotes), then the password for root. RE: [newbie] Here is the dumbest question ever asked!
Thanks for info all... The problem was I didn't have an option to shutdown or restart after logging out of X.. it just took me to a screen with only the option of logging back in. I reinstalled everything.. actually I didn't like the way I did the original partition so that was the reason for redoing it and this time it installed KDE as my default manager. Last time it was using something else and that's why I didn't have the choices mentioned above. Everything looks and worked much better now. Can anyone point me in the right direction to get the following items working? I'm not looking for step by step (though that would be nice), but where can I find the info I'm looking for. Modem isn't recognized - 56K USR internal voice/fax modem. Linux says it's busy when I try to set it up. 2-way Cable modem for MediaOne service (constant on) - Everything I've read wants me to enter all sorts of info about the hostname, etc. Problem is there is nothing like that in my Windows settings. Everything is blank in Win98's TCP/IP settings for the NIC. The NIC is a 3COM EtherLink 10/100 PCI TX (3C905B-TX) Printer doesn't work - I have a Lexmark 3200 inkjet printer. I chose the HP 500C in the setup per the Lexmark instructions, but it doesn't print. That's as far as I've gotten so far. I think if I could get those babies to work (especially the cable modem) I could learn a bit easier by being able to access the internet info from within Linux, instead of logging back into Windows, reading some info or printing it out and then going back to the Linux system. Thanks for the help so far! Bryan

If you've had this problem before, please give me a detailed solution. THANKS, Sam Ok, I think what is happening is that the autoexec.bat or config.sys on your C: drive have the partition magic running. If that is not true, then: 1. Can you get into Safe Mode for windows when booting? 2. If not, the next thing to try is to make a copy of your msdos.sys on your C drive. You'll probably need to run attrib -r -s -h msdos.sys to make it visible in DOS before you can copy it. Then edit msdos.sys and change the parameter for bootGUI to 1 (one) (I'm not sure the correct name of the parameter). Then try to boot from the hard drive. 3. If it's a brand new system, you should be able to reinstall or restore Win from a CD included with the system. This should wipe out everything. Then, make the boot disks for Partition magic and boot magic. Then try Linux again.
[newbie] Initial user permissions
I saw something about this before I realized that I needed and now don't remember where to find it. I read that the first user made after setting the root password during the install didn't get the proper permissions on its config files. For example, I can change my sound card volumes, but they aren't saved, I have to change them every time I start up. I realize I need to change the permissions on some files, but cannot find out which ones. Thanks, Mike

Good luck. [newbie] FTP daemon not accepting connection
Hello, I'm currently running Linux Mandrake v6.0 with a stock "server" installation. The FTP daemon allows anonymous FTP to log in, but it doesn't allow uploading into a fully writable upload directory. It also doesn't allow users that have accounts on the system to log in. I've scanned all the man pages I thought would contain something useful, but can't seem to find the right fix.
Re: [newbie] HELP PLEASE - PartitionMagic error
Sam,I'm surprised you have't said, 'the hell with it!" and just reformat your hard drive. Start out with a clean slate, install Win 98, make a boot floppy for Partition Magic (BTW, don't use BOOT MAGIC); make another primary partition for Linux and install Linux. You may want to boot to Linux using a boot floppy (you can make one of these during the installation, just before you configure LILO). Also you don't have to install LILO, when asked if you want to use LILO just say NO. Then you'll be able to boot Win98 by default and if you want Linux ,just boot with the floppy. [newbie] security, permissions, and NetHack. . .
I recently switched from RedHat 6.1 to Mandrake 7.0 and tried installing NetHack. Before, I had to copy the files out of the tarball via Midnight Commander (or else the permissions wouldn't work right), instead of just doing a `tar xzvf nh330lin.tgz' while in the / directory, as the README instructs. Apparently Mandrake's security works differently than RedHat's. When I follow the same procedure for installing NetHack under Mandrake, I get the following error when I try to play the game (and I'm logged in as a user who is a member of the games group): NetHack, Copyright 1985-1999 By Stichting Mathematisch Centrum and M. Stephenson. See license for details. perm_lock: Operation not permitted Cannot lock perm for unknown reason (1). Hit space to continue: Thanks for any help with this. ---Norvell Spearman
