refused by the server mioserver.it The server may not be accepting
connections or may be busy".

[newbie] Localhost login

2000-03-08 Thread Tashman

I have setup a duel-booting system with Linux and
Windows 98. After successfully installing Linux I have
been unable to get any further. When I choose to boot
into Linux from the Lilo boot menu, the system loads
and then displays a screen which has a picture of a
penguin and information about when the system was
compiled and other information about the processor and
RAM. At the bottom of the screen is this:

Linux Mandrake release 6.1 (Helios)

Localhost login: _

I have typed in 'root' and 'Bobby' which are the users
that were setup when I installed and when I press
enter they just disappear. There is nowhere to enter a
password. I want to setup the system to use KDE but
have no idea how. Can anyone shed any light on this

  Here's how I do it: g++ -o executable_name source_code.cpp

That should compile it. I personally have that all set up into a script so
 it
takes less time to type. Put

  #!/bin/bash
  g++ -o $1 $1.cpp; ./$1

into a text file, like "compile", chmod it (chmod u+x compile), and move
 it
in your path, like /usr/local/bin. Then to compile a program you wrote,
 just
type "compile program_name" and it'll compile and run it automatically.
 And as
far as I know, all compilers work the same way.

hey, this is an easy question:
How do I compile a program under g++
I just can't figure it out
lets say, I have a file called "test.cpp" under / the dir
   how would I compile it?
when i try, it does not return anything on the command line
and just makes a new command line, just like when i started!
also, do all the compilers work the same way? ie - gcc, etc.

   Thanks,

[newbie] A Fool got loose with Mandrake 7.0.....

2000-03-08 Thread KensJunkMail

Gross error in judgement. I so enjoyed 6.5 that I bought 7.0. Eight
hour installation process, many procedures taking place "blind",
interminable waits. I lost one whole night's sleep trying to install.
Install error with mouseconfig. I thought no biggie, just reconfig.
Did that by cntrl/alt/F1. Wouldn't shutdown clean. Wouldn't reboot.
Now it won't recognize my rescue disks, it tells me I have partition
failures that force it to stop loading, gives me a choice between
entering boot password to do maintenance or ?control-D? for standard
startup. But it won't let me do a standard startup, and no commands can
be found to run fsck on the problem partition. I've tried booting with
the linux boot, the old_linux boot, the old1_linux. Now I'm stuck in
Windblows.
I'd hate to lose what I have in my user files. I'll try any ideas
anyone can offer.
Failed to backup before attempting,

But suddenly kudzu told me on startup, that I have removed this

How can I tell Mandrake to recognize these devices again?

Please give me some help... I'm lost. :-(

Re: [newbie] mail server

2000-03-08 Thread Jon Hunter

Time to throw my oar in...

Cable modems give you an address via the DHCP protocol. Some of the numbers
they give you are:

IP address
DNS server ip address
gateway

The Domain Name Server address they give you gets you on Their Server. Their
server has an alias for "mail" and "news" to point to their mail and news
servers. Netscape comes with an account set up for mail at "mail" and news at
"news". You can open a command prompt on your WinDoze box and type ipconfig
/all to get all the numbers given you (Win98, Win98SE, Winnt, Win2k). For
Win95 you must use winipcfg.

Once you get this number, you could put it into /etc/hosts

If you have noticed your netscape will not allow you to erase the server
"news", you can use this trick yourself to just use the unremovable default to
make your connection (Rather than have two servers listed).

Without the DNS server, there is nothing "Local" about anything on a LAN.
Your machine won't find anything without an address server of some kind. Even
if this is only an entry in /etc/hosts.

Here is a funny: On one of my Mankdrake 7.0 boxes my /etc/hosts file reads

127.0.0.1localhost.localdomain

and when I start X it complains it can't find it's own address. Simple fix
but I find it amusing...

bosco wrote:

I'm not sure what you mean by this either.. But in my netscape in Windows
it just says "mail", for news it says "news". It's because with cable
modems it's similar/the same as being on a LAN and you wouldn't need a DNS
appropriate address to access the "local" mailserver..

Re: [newbie] Binary Applications

2000-03-08 Thread Audrey Beck

If you downloaded .rpm files, you have to install them first. In KDE,
use the disk navigator to find the rpm, then click on it. The xrpm
program should come up with the archive so you can install it. Look at
the second tab in the window so you know where and what it's putting out
to run it afterward.

Re: [newbie] re : Explain this if you can

2000-03-08 Thread Jon Hunter

An easier way to fix this is to go into KDE and use the "Desktop Switching
Tool"

or

instead of using Startx use KDM

I love KDM as it allows you to browse through the different managers and
choose the one you want for that session. It remembers your last choice and
displays it in dropbox for the next time you log in. Log out and your machine
is locked 'til an authorized user logs in, and it has a shutdown button right
there.

going on, the answere they gave was. If you want mandrake to boot up
with a different GUI use the custom install.

now i could be wrong but wasn't the point of mandrake the integrated kde
  interface?

anyway, i think there is a program called startkde that will, well,
  start kde.
but i don't think the server install actually installs kde anyway so you
will have check and see if it did then you may have to install the rpm's
  off the install cd.

As a matter of fact, I find "default" sizes chosen by mandrake install

On a server, /tmp and /var COULD take quite a lot of space, on a desktop
it is mostly /usr, /home and maybe /opt.

By the way, I have changed a default mailing-list policy. I hope there

RFAQ

Mailing lists:

Q: How do I unsubscribe?
A: We have a nice web-interface. http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/flists.php3
for subscribing/unsubscribing.

Q: Why do people people ignore me/get mad at me whenever I post a question. Why?
A: four most usuall cases are
1) Oftoppic or annoying e-mails.
1) Uninnformative/empty "Subject" line ("help!", "problem" or so)
2) posting in html instead of the plain ASCII.
3) posting many questions in one e-mail

Q: There is too much trafic on the mailing list!
A: Yes. There is a lot of traffic. You can always use the archives instead
   (http://www.mail-archive.com/LISTNAME@linux-mandrake.com/).
Another possibility would be setting up ".procmailrc" which authomatically
saves mails from the lists to folders.

Instalation problems

Q: I cannot acces my IDE CDROM/CDRW after installation! What now?
A: Known bug. /dev/cdrom points to /dev/hdb (hdc, hdd), while the CDROM has
to be accessed as /dev/scd0 (1,2..) because of the ide=scsi line in
/etc/lilo.conf. Just change the symbolic link.

Q: I installed the new kernel, and now I cannot boot anymore. Why?
A: Do not forget to edit lilo.conf, and run /sbin/lilo afterwards whenever
you change the kernel!

Q: How to get my ISA PnP device working?
A: Try turning the "PnP OS installed" option off in bios. Then bios will
initialize the card, and cards will have a better chance to work under Linux.

Q: Why can't I install Mandrake on i486/i386 system?
A: Mandrake 6.x and 7.x packages have been compiled with pentium
optimisation. Sorry, no i386/i486 version.

Repairing things:

Q: I screwed-up my X configuration. How can I repair it?
A: on LILO prompt type "linux single", replace the line "id:5:initdefault:" in
/etc/inittab with
"id:3:initdefault:" in /etc/inittab. Then you can configure the X again with
using XFdrake, "xf86config" or "XF86Setup"

Tips tricks:

Q: how do i move the window if I cannot reach its uper edge?
A: Hold down the alt key while you use your left mouse button to drag it.

Another nice trick with PCMCIA services is when you get it running, if you
watch the boot process it fails the eth? and yet later when it starts the
PCMCIA services it will then kick on the nic and boot up nicely. If you
like me and this "failed" bothers you, go into /etc/rc.d and take a look
around. You'll notice several files like rc1.d, rc2.d etc. If your
booting
init 3 "ex: dos prompt" then go into the rc3.d dir, if your booting
straight
into the GUI mode "ex: Gnome or KDE" then go into the rc6.d dir. Then
list
the files. Notice their all symbolic links to other files, but these are
the links run to startup the services. Usually there numbered like
S10network and S45pcmcia The numbers I gave are examples. Anyway, rename
the numbers to the opposite ends...ex. from above do the following (after
looking to find a free number, as their usually numbered in increments of
5
 or 10.

 as root type : mv S45pcmcia S11pcmcia
 then type mv S10network S46network

What this does is boots them in the correct order. No failed messages
 again.

The above procedures has caused me no problems, though I admit I am fairly
new to Linux. If anyone does have problems please let me know and post to
the list so others can know as well.

 Pyro

[newbie] Linux boot loader failed to install

2000-03-08 Thread Pflueger, Andy
Title: Linux boot loader failed to install

Last night, I installed Linux Mandrake (version 6.5 I think) and when the OS installation attempted to install the Linux boot loader, I received a message saying something like error installing boot loader.

Prior to installing Linux, I was experiencing some problems with my hard drive. Such problems as not being able to delete partitions using Win98's FDISK among others. Therefore, I was finally able to delete all my partitions and start from scratch. I reinstalled Win98 and then inserted the Mandrake Disc 3 (which contains PartitionMagic). I setup the Linux partition and swap partition using this freeware version of PartitionMagic and proceeded to the install on Mandrake. When it got to the part about installing the Linux boot loader, I got the error I spoke of above.

I booted back into Windows, installed the BootMagic software that's also on the Disc 3 and it told me that BootMagic was already installed on a hidden partition. Could this be a problem with my Master Boot Record (MBR) and could BootMagic already be on my MBR?

I'd like to get up and running with Linux and start experiencing a real operating system without crashes (as the typical Windows user would see). ;-)

That has been my single largest complaint about
Netscape and Linux. Though this doesn't pertain much to KDE. I have
2 phone lines and have dialed the M$ machine with IE and the Linux machine with
Netscape. I've downloaded the same file from the same FTP server both with

with the browser (if the Netscape finishes at All!!), but my FTP sessions have
been a wash. This is all a result of a default Mandrake 6.0 installation
(including whatever version of Netscape came with the distro).

Off topic, but hopefully, someone here can provide
an answer. There's probably a better place for this request though

Hi Denis, I set up a server for our office of 15 clients using Mandrake 7.0,
it will be used for filesharing and web browsing. There is no need for email
or printer sharing because each Netscape client POP's their mail from an
account w/ our web host and everyone has their own rinter. We may add a
calendaring/scheduling app like Netscape Collaborator or Lotus Notes in the
future. Our server is a IBM Netfinity 3000 (PII350, 128 meg, 9.1 gig SCSI-2).
I just installed a few nights ago and have no problem re-installing if I am
way off on the partitions, since the server is not in use right now.

I currently have it set with:

/boot - 20 megs
/tmp- 200 megs
/var - 200 megs
/ - 500 megs
/usr - 1,500 megs
/home - 6,200 megs
swap - 257 megs

1) When you say that /tmp and /var can get quite big, how large should I make
them?
2) Should I make a /usr/local or /opt partition for software added later?
3) What command will allow me to see how full / or any other partition is
after my install?

Any advice wold be greatly appreciated,

   Here's how I do it: g++ -o executable_name source_code.cpp

That should compile it. I personally have that all set up into a
script so
  it
takes less time to type. Put

   #!/bin/bash
   g++ -o $1 $1.cpp; ./$1

into a text file, like "compile", chmod it (chmod u+x compile), and
move
  it
in your path, like /usr/local/bin. Then to compile a program you
wrote,
  just
type "compile program_name" and it'll compile and run it
automatically.
  And as
far as I know, all compilers work the same way.

hey, this is an easy question:
How do I compile a program under g++
I just can't figure it out
lets say, I have a file called "test.cpp" under / the dir
how would I compile it?
when i try, it does not return anything on the command line
and just makes a new command line, just like when i started!
also, do all the compilers work the same way? ie - gcc, etc.

Thanks,
Julien

[newbie] Mount Problems

2000-03-08 Thread maxtorator

To all that can help:

My friend and I have been working on his drives to get them properly accessible
but we continue to have problems. Here is a brief description of our problems:

First he installed mandrake 7.0 on his system with the 2.2.14-15 kernel.
Everything went very well for him. His floppy was automatically mounted and
accessible, and his CD-Rom (52X IDE) was also accessible. Then he purchased an
IDE CDR-RW (Teac 4x8). He installed the new hardware but Mandrake didnt
recognize it because his kernel was not ScSI emulated so we compiled a new
kernel (2.2.14) and enabled scsi emulation. So, then his floppy werked great,
his CDROM werked great, and he could use his CDRW, (although his CDRW was not
supermounted)so we felt that all was well. (we thought) but during the kernel
compilation we didnt enable sound card support so he didnt have any sound. He
recompiled the kernel again to enable his sound card and installed his new
kernel. Then his CDROM, Floppy, or CDRW would not work, could not access any
files on them. He recompiled his kernel again, but soemthing went wrong and he
ended up having to totally reformat and start from scratch. When he installed
Mandrake again (clean install) Both CDROM and CDRW were supermounted but again
he couldnt use his floppy, or either of his CdROMs. So we monkied with the
fstab file with no avail. Then we recompiled his kernel again with scsi
emulation for his IDE CDRW and installed. The scsi emulation is enabled and it
detects his CDRW but he can still not access any files on either his CDROM,
CDRW, or his floppy drive.
Now, with all of that said. I know that there has to be a way to get
everything werking like it should. We have read man pages and doc pages but
still have yet to be successful. So, if anyone could give me a few pointers on
what to do (or what not to do) to make this set up werk, I would really
appreciate it.
Hopefully I described everything enough, if you need to know more about this
situation feel free to ask.

[newbie] How to config sound on Mandrake 7.0?

2000-03-08 Thread mendes

Hello
I am running both Manrake 7.0 and Caldera 2.3 on the same machine (not
simultaneously, of course!). I did not have probelm to config the ISA Sound
blaster AWE 64 withtin Caldera but when I try to do the same on Mandrake 7.0 it
won't work and sometimes wreckes the modem configuration (when I use lothar?).
Any suggestions on how to configure the sound?

Thanks a lot.

Eduardo

Eduardo,

SU or login as root user then
try using the 'sndconfig' program.

This is RedHat handy dandy tool. You want to
run it our of your Xdisplay at console level.

Yes, I'm running a dual-boot win98se and linux machine. When downloading
from the exact same site on a windows session, it downloads perfectly but
doesn't even complete half-way on a linux session. If you need any
more info, please ask. Thanks.

Re: [[newbie] X problem]

2000-03-08 Thread Indianten

Hi Victor:
I had a simular cituation. I have an IBM Aptiva. I installed the
Mandrake 7.0 several times and when it came to X my system froze up. The only
way I got around this was to install Mandrake 7.0 as and upgrade. After that
X configured I''m able to readjust my monitor rate now. I'm a newbie myself.
 Good luck.

Re: [newbie] How to config sound on Mandrake 7.0?

2000-03-08 Thread David Schur

Yup, try running "sndconfig" in a terminal window. Just follow the steps from there. I
recomend using the old dma irq etc settings you had before and it should work. if you
are running windows, do a full print of the system profile in ( control panel system
devices ) that way you have a run down of everything...

2000-03-08 Thread Ronald J. Yacketta

Thats just plain wicked :)
I never had any problems with ftp/http downloads in linux, winblows on
the other hand is a pain in the ace!

let me think about this one, sounds realy wierd seeing they both go out
the internet nic, that is win98 traffic comes to the linux box on nicB
and goes to the net on nicA, and the reverse for return traffic in nicA
out nicB to win98. while linux traffic should be directional through
nicA.

Re: [newbie] Disableing PNP IN BIOS

I know I had to push f2 on my win95 machine. Try holding down the delete key
as soon as your machine boots. If it loads completely, restart and hold down
f2. You might also want to read the booklet included with your machine

I now know how to enter bios even though there is no prompt but I could
not find this PnP setting everbody is talking about. Where is it?

 Please share

 Matt

Hey Matt PNP OS stands for PLUG AND PLAY OPERATING SYSTEM. To get into your
bios just watch real carefully when you turn your computer on. It will say
something like press Delete to enter setup. When it says that press and hold
the! delete key until it opens up. One last thing it might not be delete.
Delete is just the most common it might be a differnt key so just watch when
it boots up

This is not always true. I have a 486 DX2 66 mghrtz system, and I have run
Mandrake 6.0 and 7.0 without problems. I just don't use gnome or KDE.
