The server may not be accepting connections or may be busy".

[newbie] A Fool got loose with Mandrake 7.0.....
Gross error in judgement. I so enjoyed 6.5 that I bought 7.0. Eight hour installation process, many procedures taking place "blind", interminable waits. I lost one whole night's sleep trying to install. Install error with mouseconfig. I thought no biggie, just reconfig. Did that by cntrl/alt/F1. Wouldn't shutdown clean. Wouldn't reboot. Now it won't recognize my rescue disks, it tells me I have partition failures that force it to stop loading, gives me a choice between entering boot password to do maintenance or ?control-D? for standard startup. But it won't let me do a standard startup, and no commands can be found to run fsck on the problem partition. I've tried booting with the linux boot, the old_linux boot, the old1_linux. Now I'm stuck in Windblows. I'd hate to lose what I have in my user files. I'll try any ideas anyone can offer. Failed to backup before attempting, Ken

Re: [newbie] mail server
Time to throw my oar in... Cable modems give you an address via the DHCP protocol. Some of the numbers they give you are: IP address DNS server ip address gateway The Domain Name Server address they give you gets you on Their Server. Their server has an alias for "mail" and "news" to point to their mail and news servers. Netscape comes with an account set up for mail at "mail" and news at "news". You can open a command prompt on your WinDoze box and type ipconfig /all to get all the numbers given you (Win98, Win98SE, Winnt, Win2k). For Win95 you must use winipcfg. Once you get this number, you could put it into /etc/hosts If you have noticed your netscape will not allow you to erase the server "news", you can use this trick yourself to just use the unremovable default to make your connection (Rather than have two servers listed). Without the DNS server, there is nothing "Local" about anything on a LAN. Your machine won't find anything without an address server of some kind. Even if this is only an entry in /etc/hosts. Here is a funny: On one of my Mankdrake 7.0 boxes my /etc/hosts file reads 127.0.0.1localhost.localdomain and when I start X it complains it can't find it's own address. Simple fix but I find it amusing... Jon Hunter NT Domain Administrator / PC fixit dude bosco wrote: I'm not sure what you mean by this either.. But in my netscape in Windows it just says "mail", for news it says "news". Re: [newbie] Binary Applications
If you downloaded .rpm files, you have to install them first. In KDE, use the disk navigator to find the rpm, then click on it. The xrpm program should come up with the archive so you can install it. Re: [newbie] re : Explain this if you can
An easier way to fix this is to go into KDE and use the "Desktop Switching Tool" or instead of using Startx use KDM I love KDM as it allows you to browse through the different managers and choose the one you want for that session. It remembers your last choice and displays it in dropbox for the next time you log in. Log out and your machine is locked 'til an authorized user logs in, and it has a shutdown button right there. A: We have a nice web-interface. http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/flists.php3 for subscribing/unsubscribing. Q: Why do people people ignore me/get mad at me whenever I post a question. Why? A: four most usuall cases are 1) Oftoppic or annoying e-mails. 1) Uninnformative/empty "Subject" line ("help!", "problem" or so) 2) posting in html instead of the plain ASCII. 3) posting many questions in one e-mail Q: There is too much trafic on the mailing list! A: Yes. There is a lot of traffic. You can always use the archives instead (http://www.mail-archive.com/LISTNAME@linux-mandrake.com/). What now? A: Known bug. /dev/cdrom points to /dev/hdb (hdc, hdd), while the CDROM has to be accessed as /dev/scd0 (1,2..) because of the ide=scsi line in /etc/lilo.conf. [newbie] Linux boot loader failed to install
Title: Linux boot loader failed to install Last night, I installed Linux Mandrake (version 6.5 I think) and when the OS installation attempted to install the Linux boot loader, I received a message saying something like error installing boot loader. Prior to installing Linux, I was experiencing some problems with my hard drive. Such problems as not being able to delete partitions using Win98's FDISK among others. Therefore, I was finally able to delete all my partitions and start from scratch. I reinstalled Win98 and then inserted the Mandrake Disc 3 (which contains PartitionMagic). I setup the Linux partition and swap partition using this freeware version of PartitionMagic and proceeded to the install on Mandrake. When it got to the part about installing the Linux boot loader, I got the error I spoke of above. I booted back into Windows, installed the BootMagic software that's also on the Disc 3 and it told me that BootMagic was already installed on a hidden partition. Could this be a problem with my Master Boot Record (MBR) and could BootMagic already be on my MBR? I'd like to get up and running with Linux and start experiencing a real operating system without crashes (as the typical Windows user would see). ;-) Regards, Andy Pflueger Intranet Webmaster Ivy Hill Packaging Louisville, KY (502)458-5303 x4052 Intranet: http://ivyweb

Re: [newbie] can't fully download...
That has been my single largest complaint about Netscape and Linux. Though this doesn't pertain much to KDE. I have 2 phone lines and have dialed the M$ machine with IE and the Linux machine with Netscape. I've downloaded the same file from the same FTP server both with a browser and with FTP. The M$ machine *always* finishes in 1/2 the time with the browser (if the Netscape finishes at All!!), but my FTP sessions have been a wash. This is all a result of a default Mandrake 6.0 installation (including whatever version of Netscape came with the distro). Off topic, but hopefully, someone here can provide an answer. There's probably a better place for this request though ... I personally have that all set up into a script so it takes less time to type. Put #!/bin/bash g++ -o $1 $1.cpp; ./$1 into a text file, like "compile", chmod it (chmod u+x compile), and move it in your path, like /usr/local/bin. Then to compile a program you wrote, just type "compile program_name" and it'll compile and run it automatically. And as far as I know, all compilers work the same way. hey, this is an easy question: How do I compile a program under g++ I just can't figure it out lets say, I have a file called "test.cpp" under / the dir how would I compile it? when i try, it does not return anything on the command line and just makes a new command line, just like when i started! also, do all the compilers work the same way? ie - gcc, etc. Thanks, Julien -- Anthony Huereca http://m3000.1wh.com Press any key to continue and any other key to quit
[newbie] Mount Problems
To all that can help: My friend and I have been working on his drives to get them properly accessible but we continue to have problems. Here is a brief description of our problems: First he installed mandrake 7.0 on his system with the 2.2.14-15 kernel. Everything went very well for him. His floppy was automatically mounted and accessible, and his CD-Rom (52X IDE) was also accessible. Then he purchased an IDE CDR-RW (Teac 4x8). He installed the new hardware but Mandrake didnt recognize it because his kernel was not ScSI emulated so we compiled a new kernel (2.2.14) and enabled scsi emulation. So, then his floppy werked great, his CDROM werked great, and he could use his CDRW, (although his CDRW was not supermounted)so we felt that all was well. (we thought) but during the kernel compilation we didnt enable sound card support so he didnt have any sound. He recompiled the kernel again to enable his sound card and installed his new kernel. Then his CDROM, Floppy, or CDRW would not work, could not access any files on them. He recompiled his kernel again, but soemthing went wrong and he ended up having to totally reformat and start from scratch. When he installed Mandrake again (clean install) Both CDROM and CDRW were supermounted but again he couldnt use his floppy, or either of his CdROMs. So we monkied with the fstab file with no avail. Then we recompiled his kernel again with scsi emulation for his IDE CDRW and installed. The scsi emulation is enabled and it detects his CDRW but he can still not access any files on either his CDROM, CDRW, or his floppy drive. Now, with all of that said. I know that there has to be a way to get everything werking like it should. We have read man pages and doc pages but still have yet to be successful. So, if anyone could give me a few pointers on what to do (or what not to do) to make this set up werk, I would really appreciate it. Hopefully I described everything enough, if you need to know more about this situation feel free to ask. -- Maxtor [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.maxtors.com

I also use these cards and have a cable modem attached to the 3c900B. Firstly both of mine detect during setup (mandrake 7.02) only because I turned off -boot to PnP Os. Secondly I use the the 3c59x for the 3c900B and type in 3c90x for the 3c905B when using drakconf. The 3c905 is a really shit card, it gives me trouble from time to time but a reboot will fix that. Thats just plain wicked :) I never had any problems with ftp/http downloads in linux, winblows on the other hand is a pain in the ace! let me think about this one, sounds realy wierd seeing they both go out the internet nic, that is win98 traffic comes to the linux box on nicB and goes to the net on nicA, and the reverse for return traffic in nicA out nicB to win98. while linux traffic should be directional through nicA. hrm Ron Ryan Drafall wrote: "Ronald J.
