I would say; boot windows and use partition magic to resize, but it doesn't
look like that's an option. The only thing I can think of, would be to boot
your computer with your windows rescue disk and run fdisk from the prompt to
delete your non-dos partitions and re-slice your drive to fit your needs.
Then start over.

Let me qualify this post by saying I am a total Linux newbie...3 days
experience (mostly bad). When installing Mandrake 7.0 I neglected to read
the brightly colored insert titled "IMPORTANT" and installed Linux over my
 existing Win98 OS.

Simple question...how do I get it back (Win98)?

I appear to have 2 Linux partitions one that is 1.5 GB and another at 7.1
GB. Booting using a Win98 system disk and running fdisk indicates that I
 have a 14MB partition that is FAT32.

How can I resize my Linux partitions so that I can allocate enough HD
space
 to re-install Win98.

AW: [newbie] Xserver Problem with Trident 3DImage985

2000-04-03 Thread Drazenko Djuricic

Hello there,

I had a similar problem. My graphics card was a TRIDENT CyberBlade i7 3D
AGP,
my Monitor is a LG Studioworks 78FT (17" Flatron, 1600 x 1200).
Due to my experience I shall never again buy any card or any Motherboard
that has a Trident chip on it. Trident just sucks.
What I did to make it work:
Chose my Trident CyberBlade i7 and selected a generic
"1024 x 768 60Hz LCD" ( !!! ) as my Monitor, as all other
settings would not work with this card (my LG Monitor works OK
when used with other cards such as ATI or NVIDIA).
The result was that I got a 1024 x 768 16-Bit color screen at 60Hz.
B U T : The performance really really sucks and is way behind even
my slow old Pentium 90. I had to turn off almost all "special effects"
such as "show contents when moving window" etc.

Altough I made it work, I found my Linux experience with my Trident card
was so frustrating that I shut it down and now instead use a
RIVA TNT2 based card.

DJ.

The device is in the Driver list of this version of mandrake.I select the

 It probes

Also when I select 800X600 in 8 bit mode, the X server can't perform a

[newbie] Still No Internet Connection

2000-04-03 Thread Abracks

Hello All,

Okay, I still cannot get on the internet but I have received some good leads,
here's what I've done so far:

went into Drakconf
entered the two DNS numbers of my ISP
(connection still didn't work)

I think I may need to know the code or whatever it is for my "net device".
That is one of the fields I have to fill in, "net device". There are about
20 options like "eth0, eth1, s10, tr0, tr1, etc. I have a PCMCIA card in the
COM 1 slot (Joe, you mentioned that COM 1 = ttyso but that was not on the
list. Is it o or 0 by the way?) It also required for me to enter something
in the "kernel module" field. What the?

I needed to specify "which order the various name services must be probed"
(e.g. DNS, host or host,DNS are amont about 20 options). I have a cable
modem DHCP connection, does that help anyone? Also, how do I know if my
"machine is allowed to route IP packets".

Finally, I have my hard drive partitioned into a windows and linux section.
When booting up, LILO says I have both a "linux" and "linux_old" operating
system. How do I get rid of the linux_old crap?

all help is appreciated,

Andrew

So far I have tried the CD only. When using the PCPLUS cd-rom i cannot
create a boot disk, I get the message LoadLibrary16 failed!
I have tried to set the bios to boot from CD, but my bios doesnt handle
that. It can only boot from disk or hd.

Make sure that the cd is in the drive and then go to the MSDOS command
prompt, and type d:\dosutils\rawrite.exe, where d: is your cd drive. You
should be able to create a bootdisk this way.

If he had access to partition magic he would also have access to the dos based
pqmagict.exe which is charecter based version of program. All he would need
then would be a systems diskette. I perfer this over the pqmagic program
because I have seen Windoze crash too many times... Version 4 or better does
resize of ext2 and linux swap partitions. There are other programs out there.

Why does Mandrake 7.0 (Linux in general?) seem to run slower

does a video file run some much slower when using an application
that has been compiled for Windows95 *and* Linux? Why does the

Nope. Just tried that, here's the result:

[newbie] Upgrading Packages.

2000-04-03 Thread Oliver Stieber

I've been having a hell of a time upgrading packages,
I only have a slow, metered phone line at home so I download updates from
work.
I downloaded the new version of wine, and glx-mesa as rpm's.
went to install it them, from rpmdrake and was told there were conflicts,
so i went to uninstall wine-debug and mesa (why it didn't upgrade i don't
know),
wine-debug uninstalled fine, mesa told me there were dependant's.
after a lot of searching for something different, and trying rpm from the
command line,
I then found KPackager and managed to uninstall mesa without dependants ,
and glx-mesa installed fine, and opengl is now about 4X faster.
(except it does get lost if I change the screen res)

is there an easier way to do this without spending several hours/days on the
phone,
which would probably cost me far more than getting a boxed copy of m$ 2000
enterprise.
(not that i'd want to mind).

to get rid of the linux_old you may need to edit lilo.conf.
this is in either /boot or /etc or maby /etc/lilo ,i'm not sure where
mandrake put's it.

you can open this up in vi(for the bold) or the kde editor.

there will be a line with linux_old in there which you can just remove or

have now installed what I want using text and cfdisk,
so am ready to try things out.

I would, however, like to know if anyone else has had

explanation found? I'm relatively inexperienced but
know I used the patch in accordance with Mandrake's

No, I am sorry to say that because I read 100-300 emails a day I have a
problem remembering what everyone said every time. This makes me a bad
person in some peoples eyes. Unfortunately this list does not keep

only have what info is in the present message. I may not be the only
person out there with this problem...

I haven't much else to say on your problem except perhaps you could
install zgv (a console based graphics viewer) to test your mouse
configuration. If your mouse works correctly under this one then you
know to look elsewhere for an answer, Maybe something in quake.

/etc/vga/libvga.config is used for both.

It doesn't take forever, actually about 30 hours. I did it from tucows
using a program called getright for windows (very nicely written program!),
and I believe that gFTP under Linux could accomplish the same task. It's
not the downloading part that's the problem, it's the disconnecting to use
the phone, then reconnecting and picking up where you left off - that's
where getright comes in handy.

[newbie] Red Hat 6.1 installation gone bad and then gone worse...Please he lp

2000-04-03 Thread Phil Lamey

I was
trying to install Red hat 6.1 on a AMD 366 with 64 megs of ram over the
weekend.
Everything went well until the installation was
finished then the machine forze up while "Updating
Configuration".
When I
re-booted the machine I went straight to windows98 and never saw any Linux boot
up at all.
I then
realized I am a moron and forgot to set a boot partition.

I had
used partition magic to set the partition so then I went back in using patition
magic tofree up space for a re-install.

Problem is now that when I go through the install
steps, when I get to the part where the install should start, I flash to a DOS
window...see some security warning...and then a re-boot
occurs.

Can
anyone please help me with this problem?

Thanks,

I installed, from scratch, Mandrake 7.

It took 2.75 HOURS - usually takes 35 minutes.

The system is now glacially s-l-o-w with far too much hard drive activity.

It is also reporting a 2.2GB hard drive as about 5GB !!

Have I activated any compression system, like the DOS DoubleDisk, by
mistake?

I have to have sendmail configured and running by morning so please H-E-L-P

I would say; boot windows and use partition magic to resize, but it doesn't
look like that's an option. The only thing I can think of, would be to boot
your computer with your windows rescue disk and run fdisk from the prompt to
delete your non-dos partitions and re-slice your drive to fit your needs.

Not true. It works fine -- the reason you can't read those PDFs is that they

true PostScript.

For PostScript files PS Viewer works just fine.

If you need to read PDFs, go and get Acrobat Reader from Adobe.

I'm running Linux-Mandrake 7.02 and I want to give a few other users in my

I've tried giving them access to Linuxconf I their user accounts, but they
still get 'permission denied' errors when they try to run it. I experimented
with giving one of them super-user access, but no luck. I'm using the User
Accounts module in Linuxconf to modify their permissions.
I even tried using chmod to give them access to the Linuxconf files, but all
that managed to do was change the error message to 'segmentation fault.' I
used DrakConf to set the security settings to high when I installed the OS,
but I tried switching to medium and low settings with the same results. Is
there some other setting I need to modify? (Sorry if this has been covered
here before, I'm pretty new to Linux and this list).

Re: [newbie] installing a program

2000-04-03 Thread Grendel

i have got a simple question which however could take a little long to
answer.this general question is :'how do i install a program or
application
whatsoever in linux?'i have noticed that when i download a program or
application for linux,it comes in the .tar.gz format,is that the source
code
of the program?and then how do i install the program which this file
contains?usually i am told to untar ,but how do i do that and then how
will
the installation proceed, and after the installation how do i run the
program?i would really appreciate it if anyone of you could answer in
detail
 these questions.thank you in advance.

I'm really new at this too but I have discovered a couple things. the .tar
and .tar.gz files are compressed archives. You can either use the KDE
Explorer under the Utlilies menu to go to that gz file and double-click to
unzip it OR if that doesn't work go to the console and type tar -xvf
filename (X for expand V for verbose and F for the filemname). I think
that works best with the straight .TAR files. The explorer worked great on
some of the other compressed files.

Once they are unzipped you're kinda on your own, I'm still feeling my way
around there. Right click on some of the files and Edit to read them (or
open and TXT files). One will generally tell you which file you must modify
to install. I've had a bear of a time trying to install the Java ICQ and it
STILL doesn't work... tho I did get it installed by typing /.install. The
"/." seems to be the secret of installing/running programs from the command
line. shrug

The FDISK that comes with M$ anything can't deal with the thought that you

from
console run sndconfig, to get your sound card up

change
your cdrom to

/mnt/cdrom supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/sc0 0

or
/mnt/cdrom2
/mnt/cdrom2 supermount fs=iso9660,dev=/dev/sc0 0 0

go
into dark config, look at your settings and find out which cdrom drive has been
mounted as scsi ,
every thing should then work fine.

1 - Netscape just shuts itself down sometimes without warning...is this
a Netscape oddity or a Mandrake Linux problem?

It's just because Netscape sucks.

2 - is Netscape so meant to look so dull and lacking in colour?
(compared to the win version it IS a bit boring to look at)

Again, it's because Netscape sucks

3 - Netscape is noticibly slower connecting and loading pages off the
 Webis this normal?

I've noticed no difference. Well, maybe I have. Does it take longer because it
seems to be downloading something (like a picture), but it can't seem to finish
it? I could be wrong, but seems like Netscape must finish downloading
whatever it's currently doing before it'll move on to anything else. Quite
annoying, and yet another reason why Netscape sucks.

Oh, I'm using ver 4.7 that came with MDK7.0
Thanks again in advance for everyones patience.

Hello List,
Has anyone managed to get the SiS 6326 chip to work with version 4 of
XFree86?
I installed v4 without drama but, no matter what I do, I cannot get a
normal mouse pointer; rather, I have the big white square that has
featured prominently on the newbie list.
I have read the archives and tried (I think correctly) the Options
"sw_cursor", "noaccel" and "no_bitblt" as appropriate. I have tried to
configure a serial IntelliMouse and a conventional 3-button mouse with
the same unhappy result.
I have reverted to the previous XFree86(3.3.6?) that ships with LM7.0
without problems and have the normal pointer back. Does this suggest a
fault in the "sis" driver in v4 rather than a fault in the SiS chip?
Then again, some people are having problems with the earlier XFree86,
but it seems strange that it will work in my setup but not with v4. I
have an Aopen PA50 AGP card (not flash, I know, and I wish I hadn't
bought it).
Has anyone any ideas to help me run v4 other than "buy a better card"?
Thanks.

Why would you want to run in 8 bit mode, its horrible!

Have you tried a generic 800*600 monitor, or if it is multisync,
a generic 800*600 multisync monitor?
Also 60hz is a frequency that most if not all monitors can run at.
It may not be the easiest on the eye, but it almost always works
and also prolongs the life of your monitor too :-)
I have seen people set their monitors at ridiculously high frequency
just because people say that it is better, well it IS better, especially
for the manufacturers of Monitors, they get to sell new ones after yours
carks it :-(..
Rant mode off :-)

Try as I suggested, and if it works, let all of us know, it may help
others..

Geez, You guys made me dig my old zip drive out of the closet to test this problem
and you know, it didn't work either. Tried it on a RedHat 6.1 and a Mandrake

Worked fine with Redhat 5.2 and Slackware 3.6 some time ago with the commands
listed above. I also looked at modules loaded and tried it without any modules
and in init 1 hand loading modules. Since the kernel for Mandrake 7.0 came from
Redhat 6.1 (Recompiled) I wonder if perhaps lp (or another parallel port using
service) support was built into the kernel instead of as a mod.

Question! Does anyone out there have a parallel port ZIP working on Mandrake
7.0-2 or RedHat 6.1? If so, can you please tell us how you did it? Give out with
the port setting in the BIOS, Kernel you used and anything else you think might
help. I am going to try recompiling a kernel to see if I can get it working.

I don't really know if this will help; but check out the attached "text" file. I

The most popular seems to be the Parallel port version. It has been
around a long time and it is low cost. The SCSI version has also
been around for a while but it needs a scsi card that many people
do not have already, so it it not quite as popular. The ATAPI
version now seems to be more available. The Plus is the newer
version of the ZIP drive. It has the capability to detect what
port its plugged into, scsi or parallel. This document will focus
on the Parallel port version, but also offer some tips for other
 versions.

[newbie] mandrake 7.0 and sshd question

Hi all, I pulled down the ssl and ssh packages from the mandrake crypto

The configure, compile and install happens withour complaint but
starting
sshd always gives me this error.

error: Could not load host key: /usr/local/etc/ssh_host_key: Success
1: Since the daemon didn't start what does "Success" mean?
2: ssh_host_key does exist in that directory. I generated it using

ssh-keygen -f ssh_host_key, I also set the permissions to 600.

I'm guessing that I generated the key improperly, but this is my first
time trying to use ssh so I'm not sure how to approach the problem.

The online ssh.org etc.. seems to just assume that sshd will start :-)
not much help in the faq ot troubleshooting areas.

Thanks

2000-04-03 Thread Hazel Norman Teferle

Thanks to Paul and Alan.
I have managed to create a boot disk with rawrite. I can now also boot from
the cdrom and get into the DrakX installation program were I encounter my
next dilemma.

What to do in the Setup Filesystems menu?
Do I say OK when DrakX needs to resize my Windows partition? or do I cancel.
I want to install lnx4win and thought that I don't need a new partition.
Further, do I also have to select mount points in the following menu point?

Could someone help me please?.
Thanks a lot

So far I have tried the CD only. When using the PCPLUS cd-rom i cannot
create a boot disk, I get the message LoadLibrary16 failed!
I have tried to set the bios to boot from CD, but my bios doesnt handle
that. It can only boot from disk or hd.

Make sure that the cd is in the drive and then go to the MSDOS command
prompt, and type d:\dosutils\rawrite.exe, where d: is your cd drive. You
should be able to create a bootdisk this way.
