[newbie] Printing from Mandrake 7.0

2000-04-14 Thread Andrew Wafula

Hi,

I just installed Mandrake 7.0 but I can't get to print on our Network
Printer which is a hosted on a WinNT machine. With RedHat 6.0 I could be
able to print, but with Mandrake 7.0 I can't even with the same
settings. I don't want to go back to RH 6.0 coz I like Mandrake better.
I have tried DrakConf and printtool but neither works.

Please help.

Andrew

uninstall the lpd rpm and its dependencies and install the ORIGINAL mandrake
6.1 rpm and associated dependencies.
I had the same problem and there appears to be a bug in all versions after
original 6.1 version.

[newbie] Booting Up Multiple OS's

2000-04-14 Thread andy

Here's the deal..

I had a single 8.4gb hard drive, partioned with W98 in 6 gb, Linux in the
remainder..Lilo worked just fine...

Now..

I installed a 20gb h/d in addition to this this week-I've kept the original
as master and the new one as slave.

My plan was to put a completely clean install of W98 onto the new drive,
make an image file using Norton Ghost, burn that onto a CD (Makes
re-installing windows a brze!!), then drag all my personal files
over and re-install the apps onto the new drive, then allow Linux to take
over the entire original 8.4 gb by re-sizing the partitons.

Fine..on paper (Or in my head!!)

When I'd done the fresh install of W98 on the new drive, I lost access to my
original hard drive, so the only thing I could boot into was the new copy of
W98.. I think I remember reading that, if you install Windows AFTER Linux,
it over-writes the boot records so Lilo boesn't function any more. Is that
right? The t*t that I am..I didn't make a boot floppy on my last Linux
install (.hangs head in shame and stands in the corner!!)

To cut this short then..I've finished up fdisk-ing the lot, installing Linux
first onto the slave h/d in a 6 gb partition (Should be enough, shouldn't
it??) and I'll put W98 on the original 8.4 gb drive. Now, when I re-install
W98 tonight, that mean that lilo will disappear again, won't it? So the
question is..how do I boot into Linux without it (i've created a floppy disc
this time, that will probably help) and once I've managed to get into Linux,
can I then re-install Lilo at all?

Thanks for listening

Andy

Hello Gurus,

I have successfully installed the OS onto one machine here at work. I am now
trying to do the same for a second machine.

After booting from floppy I press Return to start booting the install, it gets

you may safely reboot your system

I have tried to booting from both CD and Floppy, removing the SCSI devices,
using two alternate video cards (including one from the working machine) and
removing the mouse (it was the last thing detected on virtual session 3)

Can I install using the command line only ? or using a character based script
rather than the X windows one that appears to be failing ?

Can I get at the log files that are mentioned on screen 3 (* extra log messages
are enabled) ?

If you have any ideas, then I'd appreciate them...

Re: [newbie] Problems

2000-04-14 Thread Ove Peter

 Some networking problems:
I am hooked to my campus ethernet network.
While running windows, I get tremendous throughput loading pages, doing
ftp, etc..now in netscape in linux, I am getting throughput no higher than
3.5k/sec and then it starts dropping, and stalls out..goes back up to
3.5/3.6 and drops slowly to 3.0, 2.9,2.8..etc then stalls out..
any ideas? I am using an AMD K6-II 350 overclocked to 400, 128 megs
SDRAM, an SMC EtherEZ 8416 NIC, mandrake 7.0

I think thats a Netscape related problem. Actually Im so fed up with
Netscape that I dont use it anymore...

. Also, I had the same problem as I thought the others did...I try to
telnet to my machine from somewhere else, and it says connected...I wait
for the login prompt, it hesitates and then the connection is dropped.
I know I should edit my /etc/inetd file..what should I make sure it has to
be able to telnet in?
I just want to be able to telnet and ftp into my machine, s'all.

Thanks Valjean

You should have an entry like this in "/etc/inetd.conf":
telnet stream tcp nowait root/usr/sbin/tcpd in.telnetd

If it still doesnt work after you uncomment this line, have a look if there
is a file "in.telnetd" in "/usr/sbin". If not, you have to install the telnet
-server rpm (There are two telnet rpms, telnet-server and telnet-client), it
should work then.

Cheers,
Ove

Re: [newbie] Help with Mandrake install ....

2000-04-14 Thread David Hugh-Jones

If you have a custom boot disk for mandrake, the simplest thing is
probably to load DOS from a floppy and type fdisk /mbr. This will
reformat your master boot record DOS style, which means that you won't
be able to boot linux. But you should be able to get into windows, and
you can boot linux from the floppy.

After that you will probably want to play with your lilo.conf file in
/etc/lilo.conf.

The floppy disk should do the trick. Just boot from it. Then rerun lilo
from within linux. This will overwrite W98. You may need to edit your
lilo.conf file first, to make sure it has windows as an option, on the
correct partition.

Fine..on paper (Or in my head!!)

If you want to resize the Linux configuration without losing everything you
have on it, then you'ld want to use a tool like Partition Magic, that is, if
there are any alternatives to PM. PM has the capability of resizing partitions
without losing anything, especially when increasing the size of partitions (not
sure what PM does when you try to resize a partition to smaller than what's on
it takes up, though).

However, if you're going to have such large HDDs, then PM is probably something
you should seriously consider getting. I heard that there were some problems
with the 5.x version; therefore, you should do some research on this. You
could check the zdnet, pcmag, cnet and such web sites:

http://www.zdnet.com
http://www.pcmag.com
etcetera

Those problems were reported last fall or earlier last year, though, so these
have probably been fixed.

When I'd done the fresh install of W98 on the new drive, I lost access to my
original hard drive, so the only thing I could boot into was the new copy of
W98.. I think I remember reading that, if you install Windows AFTER Linux,

Yep.

Look at it as learning.

To cut this short then..I've finished up fdisk-ing the lot, installing Linux
first onto the slave h/d in a 6 gb partition (Should be enough, shouldn't
 it??)

Should be. If you eventually run out of space, then you can always create
additional filesystems later, or manage differently. There are definitely ways
of expanding later on without needing to redo everything just to gain more
space.

Might depend on what you plan to do, but 6GB would definitely be sufficient for
many purposes. As per above, you can always create and add more filesystems
later on.

For example, say you created a /home filesystem of 1GB and you eventually run
out of space, but this would still be adequate for /home. You could create a
separate 1GB or large filesystem and move /home to that, while reassigning the
space previously taken up by /home to another filesystem requiring more space
that it's current size, only needing to modify the fstab configuration file.

This isn't a great example, but it's an example of what could be done;
although, if /home happened to be next to the filesystem requiring more space
and following that filesystem, then you could delete the old /home filesystem
or partition and expand the other one by the additional 1GB freed up in moving
/home. The filesystem numbering would end up with a gap, if the new /home
filesystem or partition was placed further on the same hdd, but this shouldn't
be a problem (could in some cases, for PM, but think this example wouldn't be a
problem for PM, albeit I still use PM 3.0).

and I'll put W98 on the original 8.4 gb drive. Now, when I re-install
W98 tonight, that mean that lilo will disappear again, won't it?

Yep.

 So the
question is..how do I boot into Linux without it (i've created a floppy disc

can I then re-install Lilo at all?

Make sure your boot floppy works before re-installing Win98. As long as the bf
works correctly, then you should be able to do as you describe, being able to
reinstall lilo and the works.

You might prefer to use linuxconf or drakconf or drak?conf (not sure of the
exact spelling and letter casing) for the lilo configuration, unless you know
that the lilo.conf file is still accurate. If you're not sure, then use
linuxconf or drakconf to make sure. (linuxconf will work, but I read earlier
today that drakconf is or may be better.)

I assume this has something to do with /var/log/bootlog
I think I read somewhere that there is a way to automatically remove old

In other words is there a way to automatically reset after 30 days, and

[newbie] Network Card

2000-04-14 Thread Tim Lewis

I am trying to set up a simple Peer to Peer network between 2 W98
machines and my mandrake Linux machine.

I will need to access a printer on one of the w98 machines as well as
all of the drives (both physical and logical) on both machines.

Eventually I'd like to access the external modem on one of the w98
machines from my Linux box.

To do the above I believe I need to configure Samba?

But unfortunately I've fallen at the first hurdle in the fact that the
setup procedure doesn't seem to have detected my NIC. It is a:-

3com Etherlink III ISA (3c509b-combo)

and is running in PnP mode in w98 (I'm currently duel booting).

I can't seem to get Linux to attempt to detect it again (I'm totally
new to Linux networking, but do have a very basic knowledge of
Linux/Unix).

Can someone tell me the best way to go about getting Linux to work with
my NIC?

Once that is sorted out, what is the best information resource in
getting Samba to work with a combination of Linux an w98?

Thank you for any help.

Try

% uname -a

If this doesn't work, then check the versions of the kernel images and other
boot files in the /boot directory.

If neither of these work, then I'm not sure how else to check this. There
may
be a configuration file somewhere, which might contain this information;
however, if neither of the above methods provides the information you want,
then they should and you might want to report this in the Mandrake bug

AFAIK this is normal behavior, every so many boots the system decides to
check partitions/disks somewhat like old Micro$oft's Scandisk.
It can take some time, but is all in all a good idea.
If it finds errors in the file system it also fixes them.
Do you wan't to disable this?, or just delete logs, or what?

I use the -P option when tarring and untarring. It removes the leading "/",

Re: [newbie] Network Card

2000-04-14 Thread Quaylar

hmm..i do have the same nic..and i do also use it under mandrake
linux and windows..as far as i remember there was no support for nics in
the precompiled kernel that came with the installation...u will have to
compile a new kernel and add support for your nic...theres a point under
"ethernet 10 Mbit" that enables support for exactly those 3c509combo
cards.after that..u should have a look at what pnpdump puts
out..my nic was detected without problems after recompiling.

for resources about samba u should check out the url :

www.mandrakeuser.org

which provides a wealth of information for all topics of linux.

Betreff: [newbie] Network Card

To try some wm, I'd suggest you to start an X session with just an xterm
(by just typing xinit in a console), and try some wm by launching them
from the xterm.

When your choce is made, you can edit (or create) your ~/.Xclients file

Re: [newbie] FTP: 500 Illegal PORT Command

2000-04-14 Thread Monte Milanuk

Just a guess here, but I had a similar problem when trying
to access the SuSE update servers via ftp thru a firewall.
If I recall correctly, it has to do w/ the firewall and
using passive mode ftp vs. active mode. In active mode,
the ftp client contacts the server, and the server responds
on a different port to start the transfer. In passive
mode, the client contacts the server, the server responds
back on the same port, and the client initiates the
transfer on another port. Basically in active mode, the
firewall sees an 'unsolicited' incoming connection 'cause
it doesn't match a previous outgoing connection on the same
port, so it is denied and you get the Illegal PORT Command
b.s. I don't know if a firewall plays into your setup or
not, but this is what was going on in my case. YMMV

Yes this is right you need to be logged in as root to shutdown.

If you are logged in as a user try typing "su" without the parenthesis it will

I found a resource on this myself, haven't had a chance to try it yet but I
thought I would pass it along. Thanks for the link to the RAID article,
George, it was interesting.

This link may help in installing the card for Mandrake 7 in case someone else
has a problem:http://www.uidaho.edu/~webb3172/ultra66.html

From the KDE desktop (assuming you're using it), click the icon
'DrakConf' and then select 'Start up services'. From there, scroll down
the list and make sure you've selected 'Numlock'. Also, if you download
the latest numlock version from ftp://rpmfind.net/linux/MandrakeCooker
(you'll have to check which folder it's in - contrib or cooker) then
you'll also be able to drop a link to /usr/X11R6/bin/enable_X11_numlock
into your autostart folder and there you go.

Re: [newbie] Can't shutdown

2000-04-14 Thread bill gerber

you don't have to exit from xwindows first to shutdown. just use the logout
button under the kde or gnome button on the panel.

steve harris wrote:

 yes it is.

what i do is exit from xwindows as the user
then at the user prompt "su", then "shutdown" normally. this saves you from
logging out and back in as root to shutdown.

 Hi all,

This seems a strange problem but whenever I'm logged into LINUX as a user I
can't shutdown, i..e go into a terminal - says no command. But if I log in
 as
 root, I can.

 Is this right? :(

[newbie] samba printing problems

2000-04-14 Thread Patrick O'Neil

I have a Mandrake 7.0 install with some updated rpms from
cooker. I have been having samba printing problems since
installing 7.0 and continuing since upgrading many related
files to cooker.

I find that I can connect to the samba server and get a list
of shares, which will list the printers I wish to use. When
I set them up, using the SAME settings as I used to get the
list of shares (username, password, workgroup, server), I
cannot print. Using printtool to set them up and test
print, everything is entered properly but nothing ever
results from trying to print the test pages. I don't get
any error messages, nothing in my logs, nothing. If I
try to simply print from the command line using "lpr
filename" nothing happens. No error messages, no
printout. If I try to check the lpq, nothing shows up.

I have been trying everything I can possibly think of to
fix this, changing permissions and ownerships on /var/spool/
lpd/lp and lp0 directories or the files contained therein.
Nothing works.

I have tried upgrading samba, lpr, printtool, DrakConf,
and all the associated/dependent files and nothing works.
No printing to samba shares.

Without error messages to guide from I don't know where to
start or what could be wrong. If I use CitrixICA and print
from a windows session to the same shared printer...no
problem. If I print from a Mac in the same office, no
problem.

Something is not right with the Mandrake default setup. I
don't know if it is in samba, lpr, or where but this didn't
happen with Redhat 6.0 which I was running before switching
to Mandrake 7.0. Can anyone give guidance as to where the
problem likely is?

patrick

Re: [newbie] samba printing problems

2000-04-14 Thread tymanthius

I'm having similar problems - almost identical symptoms.

Here is something you can try, which might give you a place start. I can print
text files this way, but I'm not able to print any other way

$smbclient //server/printer -P
smb print LocalTextFile

If that gives you any ideas, PLEASE send them my way - I'm stumped.

 Hi
And in Finland there are www.nic.fi, www.sirkus.com, www.keltainen.com
and far too expensive local calls.
