[newbie] Where is the serial number for Boot Magic installation?

2000-08-03 Thread Romanator

Hi,

I'm trying to install Boot Magic but the installation is prompting me
for a serial number.
Look on the sticker. It came on a CD with: "The Multi-Boot Configuration
Handbook"

I would like to check out this boot loader for my Linux MDK7.1 and
WinNT4.

Where can I find the number? Do I have to buy the software?

Sorry for jumping in here, but I've not seen it mentioned so...

I think you're supposed to use "kill -15 pid" (SIGTERM, I think)

"kill -9 pid" is slamming it closed, forcefully, or so I'm told.

In other words, try -15 first, then -9 as a last resort. ;-)

[newbie] Want PPP Dial-up in console, w/ PINE

2000-08-03 Thread Tim

Hi all,

Did some archive searching before typing and am looking for a "simpler"
solution than all the line editing (in config. files) I've seen so far.

I've successfully set up kppp and the two email programs (Netscape's and
kmail) in the KDE environment and can SEND in PINE, from a terminal window.

What I want to do is boot to console [I can do that]; and, from the command
prompt only, establish a PPP connection with my ISP that PINE can "latch"
onto and use.

i.e., I want to type one command to dial-up and get PPP going (I'm ok w/ a
SHORT script here, but will need help) and then, type "PINE" and be able to
do all my email!

I mention that I can *send* in PINE, from a terminal window, but I haven't
yet figured out how to have it SEE the mail *in* my inbox. Will I have to
get my ISP to set up something special for me? I'd prefer to run PINE on
their system, but they are loath to give up shell accounts (hence my
tinkering w/ Linux!).

Thanks in advance!

2000-08-03 Thread Nickolas Koehne

Well, you can download SB Live! drivers from www.creativehelp.com , unfortunately this
did not work for me in Mandrake 7.1.

However, this is how I did get it
running. I installed Mandrake 7.1 normally and let it autodetect my
soundcard. It worked womewhat

Then I ran "sndconfig"

I believe it's in /usr/sbin , if not, do a find /
-name 'sndconfig' and you should be able to locate it.

I recommend finding sndconfig and running
that. I haven't had any problems with my SB live since I ran
it.

Re: [newbie] X server video card

2000-08-03 Thread Edison Gica

Hi all:

My X windows in LInux has been dead for quite some time now and have not had
the time to fix it up however got the time today to try fixing it again.

Here's the info of my computer.

CPU: AMD K6-2 533MHZ
Monitor: Compaq MV520
Video card: Trident Blade3D (note this is integrated into the motherboard
and not a separate video card)
Vidoe RAM: 8MB (RAM is taken out from my computer RAM)

I have tried using XF86Setup before and it does not go to the graphical
setup. The message I get was:

TransSocketUNIXConnect: can't connect: errno=111

Sorry forgot the first few words. So I tried to setup using the
non-graphical mode. I tried using the "Trident Blade3D" or "unlisted VGA
card" with the VGA16 server to no avail. I even input the vert and horiz
sync rates of my monitor manually still does not work. The message on the
screen was "sync out of range" with some color bar and then the monitor will
just shut down.

HOwever today, XF86Setup started working (very peculiar). So I tried to
setup using either "Trident Blade3D" or "Unlisted VGA card" and input the
correct vert and horiz sync rates of my monitor with "640x800" and 8bpp
settings (lowest settings). Then I got the message, "X server has been
successfully configured" with option to do "vidtune".

I did not do vidtune selected save to XF86Setup file. then on the console
mode I typed "X" and I either get the message:

TransSocketUNIXConnect: can't connect: errno=111

or "sync out of range" then monitor shuts down again.

If I chose "800x600" with 8bpp the server won't start and just gives the
message "sync out of range" and monitor shuts down again.

Has this somthing to do with my "integrated" video chip? The Trident
Blade3D is on the Linux list so I thought it would work but I suspect that
since it is integrated thus it's not working properly.

My other option is to get a new video card. I don't want to spend more than
$120. My choices are either a Matrox G200 8MB AGP or Diamond Viper 550
16MB/32MB AGP video card. Which one would be better considering that I also
use DVD's on my 'windoze'. How about 3dfx Voodoo 3 2000 or 3dfx Voodoo 3
3000.

Thanks all.

Ummm...

just clicking) gets me nowhere(!). Nothing is associated w/ ".bin" files.

I'm going to go after it from a few angles; but would appreciate any help.
Have never successfully installed Star Office, or anything else in Linux,

OK, now I am really stumped!

I got DOSEMU to work. I got some Apogee dos-based

but not with VGA.

Does anyone have an ATI All in Wonder Pro and know the
settings in DOSEMU to make it work with VGA.

I gave it the correct memory on the card, put VGA where
you are supposed to, disabled sound since it appears to
conflict...but no luck. Is there a trick to setting it up for
this video card?

I borrowed some of the options from the S3 card that my
Jim has (except the amount of memory and choosing ati as the
card) and it wouldn't even open DOSEMU!

On a side note -
I did get the XATITV to work that came with Mandrake
7.0...I was very happy with myself on that one! It was a
bit tricky - certain things crash it - but I got it.

Anyway, this DOSEMU thing is bugging me!

Thanks in advance for any help,

[newbie] Soundcard

2000-08-03 Thread Marcia Waller

I am a newbie and now I am ready to get my sound working. I did go through
the process from the installation guide of Mandrake 7.0 and it did not work
or at least the sound test did not work. My soundcard is ESS Es1868 Plug
Play Audio Drive and Input is 0800, Output is 0807. I checked and this card
is supposedly supported and was on the list to choose. I wonder if I
actually do have it configured but just do not know how to access it. How
would I check for this? If it is not configured what could I try next? Any
help will be appreciated. Thank you. Marcia

Thanks. Any help would be appreciated

Hi Anthony,

Try adding the following line to the Device section of the
/etc/X11/XF86Config file:

Option"no_bitblt"

The second and better solution is to visit the Suse web site at
www.suse.de/en and search for the Xsis X server. Install this on your
system and then create a symlink to it from
/usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA to /usr/X11R6/bin/XFCom_SiS. Remove the
Option"no_bitblt" from your XF86Config file (placing a hash # sign
in front will rem it). It ought to work perfectly with full acceleration
and high resolution.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Steve

[newbie] Zip Drive

2000-08-03 Thread Marcia Waller

Dear Anyone, I would like to get my zip drive to work now. I installed
Mandrake 7.0 complete, purchased the OS complete with CDs and guides. I used
Partition Magic, Bootmagic, and the supplied graphical installer. My zip is
listed in Lothar. It is an Atapi Zip 100 IDE internal drive. I even put an
icon on KDE for it but it does not access my zip. I did use the directions
in the guide for installation but obviously I did not do something right.
Could someone give me step by step instructions for getting this to work?
Any help will be appreciated. Thank you, Marcia

pooglefor me, I'm content to open an xterm, 'su -' to root

To the best of my knowledge, supermount only works for
dos/windows formatted floppies. Use traditional mounting to
access ext2 floppies. Personally, I find it most convenient
to simply use dos floppies for any floppy task.

I evidently have a similar problem. When I boot Linux (and it does work, but not

be the swap partition, and it is shown as such in the fstab. Any ideas?

Re: [newbie] Windoze

2000-08-03 Thread Greg Stewart

Server side, the US Government maintains a POSIX compatibility standard. Although
POSIX is, by now outdated, most Unixes, and Linux, are compatible.

For server-side applications, this standard offers backward-compatibility, while the
'familiar' windoze frontend on the client-side can be protected by firewalls,
mailservers, and the ever-tardy MS patches and bug-fixes.

As an admin, it makes a whole lot more sense to convert from NT/Novell to Linux due to
cost, configurability and security, but the workstations need to be 'dumbed-down' or
you have the risk of people doing some real stupid things, and wasting a HUGE amount
of production time simply getting lost.

I don't want to spend more than
$120. How about 3dfx Voodoo 3 2000 or 3dfx Voodoo 3 3000 better considering
that I also use DVD's on my 'windoze'. I need a PCI card since my
motherboard does not have an AGP slot.

Thanks all.

[newbie] FS Conversion

I remembered someone saying they had converted from ext2 to Reiserfs
without going back through
a complete install. I couldn't find the message in the archives. As I
recall, he tried it on one partition.
Diskdrak moved his files to an unused part of the partition, made the
conversion to the first part. Then
it copied his files back to the newly converted part and finished
converting the rest of the partition.

Since I don't trust my memory on such matters, I thought I would ask if
any one has in fact done this.

Re: [newbie] LAN + FTP: Troubles with Netscape and FTP

Thanks Greg!
It did not work. Problem stills. I also believe that should be a DNS
problem. I will start the network configuration from the begining to be
shure that it will not work.

I have seen the same problem occasionally... I think it may be a DNS
problem. This is a possible solution (no guarantees):

On the linux box, in /etc/hosts add the ip address and host name of your
linux box, also add the host name and ip of your windows box.

It could look somthing like this:

192.168.0.2 localhost.localdomain localhost
192.168.0.2 LinuxBox
192.168.0.1 WindowsBox

And, in linuxconf (can anyone tell I'm still stuck in Red Hat Land?)--in
terminal, su to root, type linuxconf [enter]--click
networking|host_name_search_path and make sure that hosts, DNS is selected.

I'm not sure if this is the fix (when this happened to me, I was
experimenting on a machine with an unsupported video card, and didn't care
to fool around for very long with troubleshooting. I re-installed linux
attempting to fix the video 'cause I trashed the system entirely, and the
netscape thing worked without a problem)

Hope that it helps!

Re: [newbie] Differences of versions of a distro release distro families

2000-08-03 Thread Michael R. Batchelor

Given that there are different major groupings of linux
distributions
(Red Hat, Debian, ), and that different release versions are not
directly
comparible (like RH 6.1 vs. LM 7.0 which I understand to be basically
comparible--using the same kernel revision, similar versions of major
components like X-windows, etc.), I have noted that there are also
different

Probably the most important thing to understand is that the
distributions are more closely related to each other based on their
respective release dates than anything else. Most everyone puts in the
latest release of all the components available at time of the
distribution release freeze. So the distribution numbers are pretty
meaningless for comparison.

As for kernel versions vs. other parts of the distribution, remember
that "Linux" per se is really just the kernel and it's sources, nothing
else. Way back in the dark ages one had to grab the sources from usenet,
compile a kernel, then see if you get it to boot on your system. And you
had to start with some *OTHER* Unix vendor's system to get a working
kernel. There weren't any "Linux" distributions.

The vast majority of the components in a "Linux" distribution, at least
from the toolset perspective, come from the GNU project of the Free
Software Foundation. And you can actually build a GNU kernel (HURD) and
make yourself a working Unix-like system with only GNU software. There
are other avenues, too, like OpenBSD, FreeBSD, NetBSD, etc.

Other components, like the Taylor UUCP system, MIT's X-windows, etc. are
not really related to the Linux project or to the GNU project. But
they're included because that's what's necessary to make a "working"
Unix-like system.

So, how all this came about is an interesting bit of history, and I
might get a few details misplaced or mispelled. I'm sure someone will
correct me if need be.

Back in the Dark Ages, i.e. the late 80's, ATT still owned Unix, still
licensed it for resale by other vendors under other trademark names
(HP/UX is HP's name, SunOS - later Solaris - is Sun Microsystem's name,
Xenix is Microsoft's name [yes, Xenix is a trademark of Microsoft, and
they sold SCO rights to use it after MS had Xenix on a jazillion Radio
Shack Model 6000 multiuser business computers], and AIX is IBM's name),
and everybody used mostly the same code base, kinda sorta, but not
really the BSD guys, who were already in a religious war.

There was an Internet between many campuses, a bunch of government
sites, and the big guys like IBM, DEC, etc., and there was Usenet, which
was a giant electronic user's group of sorts with many sites on the
Internet and another jazillion nodes all passing stuff around on modems
using uucp to store and forward. (Anyone still got a Telebit?)

Now, a lot of ATT's source code was kind of rough around the edges with
age, so people started writing their own versions of stuff, like Paul
Vixie wrote Vixie Cron to replace the ATT cron, Stallman and the FSF
were busy cranking out gcc and family to replace the native development
tools, rcs showed up to replace sccs and then cvs was built on top of
rcs, and a bunch more. And in the good ol' days everybody passed around
source code with a few notable exceptions, like ATT and licensee's.
(This was Stallman's big beef.)

Well, after a while - like the early 90's - just about everything had
been replaced, with a notable exception of the system libraries. Linus
had been working on Linux and passing it around, and we were compiling
it and cursing it when we couldn't make it work, but we were still using
the system libraries from the ATT licensee's even though we had
replaced cc, make, yacc, and all the other development stuff with the
GNU tools and replaced everything else with the various packages
floating around in the comp.sources.unix archives.

Note, here's where I differ from many of the mainstream reports which
claim the kernel was the missing piece. It was really the release of the
GNU libraries, thank you Richard Stallman - genius or madman I don't
know, which made it possible to put together a working system from the
various pieces which didn't need anything with ATT origins. A kinda
sorta working Linux kernel had been around for months by then.

So, people like the Slackware gang, and others I didn't play with,
started gathering up all the parts and putting them together as a single
unit. Thus was born a "Linux" distribution, free and clear of any ATT
stuff. Note that the FreeBSD guys were working toward the same goal, a
complete system free of any ATT copyrights. The BSD derivatives are
definitely *NOT* Linux, that's a different diatribe, however they
definitely *ARE* Unix-like operating systems. (And from the perspective
of an ordinary non-technical Joe User, who get's parked in front of a
computer at work but someone else maintains the thing, the two are
probably indistinguishable.)

versions of the same release (ex: Linux-Mandrake 7.1 "download" and
retail
versions). Just what, how

[newbie] Updating kernel w/ Mandrake Updater

2000-08-03 Thread Victor Richardson

Are there any extra steps to updating the kernel other than running the
Mandrake Updater?

Also, /etc/lilo had a section for the new kernels, but included a
commented line that said something like "# Add using install-kernel".
Which, of course, I did not do and had Lilo load that kernel anyway with

After installing etc it worked fine.

 What is it like?

It does exactly what it says on the tine, The Web and only the Web. Small,

Firstly,

More information is required. A general rule of thumb with seeking help
with anything to do with computers, is go sick with information. You
can never have too much (well, except perhaps a hex dump of all of your
RAM and hard disk!)

Try to either capture the output somehow, if you can boot in, type
'dmesg' or look at the boot log files and attach them to the email.

Otherwise, unless someone has had that same problem, the chances of you
getting help are about as great as my country making a significant

I installed it via RPM. You can get that here:
http://download.sourceforge.net/galeon/galeon-0.7.1-1.i386.rpm
You must also
have Mozilla working on your system to use Galeon, so if you don't
have that,
you can download it from http://mozilla.org
. Once you have mozilla up and
running, you have to do some exporting. Type "export
MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME=/the/path/to/where_you_put/mozilla". And then type
"galeon"
and it should come up.
I've followed the instructions, and i get, after execution, the following
error message:
/usr/bin/galeon-bin: error in loading shared libraries: libgtkembedmoz.so:

I don't have that library in the system 8-?

I agree. It is awesome. Does it have to be "random" or can you select one to
run. For example I like the shark one (Atlantis) but I can find no way to make
that selection stick. Is there a way?

rant
If Alex wouldn't have convinced us (me, too) that quoting just the

what Jeff and Patrick's messages were about...
/rant

So if you are talking about choosing a screensaver under KDE from the
Xscreensavers, then you can disable the screensavers which you don't
want to show up by putting a - (dash or minus sign) at the beggining
of the line where it mentions the screensaver.
However I find it very uncomfortable under the Xscreensaver | Setup
since everytime you click onto a screensaver type KDE starts the
screensaver. Maybe you could edit the config file instead. Sorry, I
currently don't remember where it is, either somewhere under
/usr/X11.../xscreensaver or, which is more probable, under
/home/.xscreensaver .

Hope it helps.

[newbie] kernel update error

2000-08-03 Thread Victor Richardson

I just tried to update my 2.2.15-4mdk kernel to 2.2.16-9mdksecure by RPM
and I think something is jacked up. I used Mandrake updater to install
2.2.16-9mdksecure kernel and 2.2.16-9-docs like Mandrakeuser.org says on
it's upgrade page, although I didn't allow it to install the
kernel-headers rpm because a dependency error came up stating that it
was going to overwrite the headers package for my 2.2.15-4 kernel and I
didn't want to risk screwing up my working kernel.

Anyway, I went to /etc/lilo.conf and saw that the new 2.2.16-9mdk-secure
kernel is properly set as the new default kernel. I did a 'lilo -v' to
update lilo and it gave an error:

Reading boot sector from /dev/sda
Merging with /boot/boot.b
Mapping message file /boot/message
Boot image: /boot/vmlinuz-secure
Fatal: open /boot/vmlinuz-secure: No such file or directory

When I look in /boot (xterm w/ colors on) the link for System.map@ and
vmlinuz-secure@ are highlighted in red, which I assume means something
is wrong because the link for vmlinuz@ (2.2.15-4 kernel)is in blue. The
related files for these links are there:
System.map-2.2.15-4mdk
System.map-2.2.16-9mdksecure
vmlinuz-2.2.15-4mdk
vmlinuz-2.2.16-9mdksecure

I (again assume) that System.map-2.2.16-9mdksecure needs to be linked to
System.map@ and vmlinuz-2.2.16-9mdksecure needs a working link with
vmlinuz-secure@.

Should I just do a 'ln -s /boot/System.map-2.2.16-9mdksecure
/boot/System.map' and 'ln -s /boot/vmlinuz-2.2.16-9mdksecure
/boot/vmlinuz-secure' to create working links? Then run 'lilo -v' again
to see if everything is hunky-dory?

Or is this problem something far more sinister? Like needing to force
update kernel-headers.

Any suggestions appreciated,

Victor

hardware issues are (if any).

Next step would be to try an install on Mdk 6.1 (or RH if you like) and try
an upgrade from there...Not as neat but proves the viability of your laptop

[newbie] kernel problems.

2000-08-03 Thread Daniel H

Hi everyone

I have the 2.2.16 kernel and today installed the
patch ide.2.2.16 which is supposed to allow ASUS P5A mbs to, among other things,
use DMA for IDE devices. However, when I run make xconfig, I get a "clock skew"
error.

Also, it seems like whenever I compile a kernel,
the sound module soundcore.o doesn't get compiled. Can anyone help me out with
this?

Thanks,
Daniel H

[newbie] Adding an NIC card

2000-08-03 Thread Brock Hargett

I'm trying to add a linksys LNE100TX NIC card. Could someone explain to me
how to add configure it? I've checked the ethernet howto but it doesn't
really say how it should be done. I know the card uses the tulip driver, but
that's about all I know.

A lot of the Apple rights were due to the fact that Xerox neither
patented nor copyrighted mice, windows, etc. In fact, they were not
sure that either law applied. Then Apple hired away a number of the
people who developed their system. Apple argued, and the Court
agreed, that much of the ideas in both operating systems were the
intellectual property of those people.

The Xerox system was both pretty fantastic and impractical. It was
written in Smalltalk. The system allowed for wonderful degrees of
information sharing and cooperative tool building, but it was
extremely resource intensive. Nicolas Werth did a similar system
called Lillith.

[newbie] Mandrake not using Xfree86 4.0

2000-08-03 Thread Andrew Schaefer

I remember seeing something about this maybe a month ag, but can't find
any reference to itnow. What do I need to change so that I can use the
4.0 version of X rather than the 3 version that it defaults to? I did
install it and ask to use it, but it's using the 3 version instead.

Thanks!

[newbie] xfree4.0 on LM 7.1 and XFConfig file

2000-08-03 Thread soulreaver

I used the expert installation and installed xfree4.0, after looking through
'/etc/X11/' i found differnet versions of the xfreeconfig file:
'XF86Config'
'XF86Config-4'
as i installed xfree4.0 all i done was to rename them to:

'mv XF86Config XF86Config-3'
'mv XF86Config-4 XF86Config'
thus in effect using the new config file for xfree4.0, but every time i try
to install the nvidia drivers for my geforce 256 sdr, i get error msgs
compiling the kernel driver using:
'make SYSINCLUDE=/usr/src/linux/include'
but its says that the kernel drivers have installed o.k, so i then go to
remove some mesa items, only to find they are links, so i rename the links
and targets and install the GLX driver (go in fine. no errors), reboot and
get a few flashes and blown back to the console line. does any one know of
the correct way?

DOSEMU woes

2000-08-03 Thread Renaud OLGIATI

Now the Linux box is working, I am trying to install DOSEMU to use some DOS
progs I still need.

First surprise, could not find DOSEMU in the Mandrake 7.1 distro, had to go
back to the 7.0 to find it.

Installed the RPM, and I'm rather surprised that the doc (READMEs, HOWTOs)
do not seem in step with whet the RPM has installed; they make reference to
various executables (mddexe, dexeconfig, lredir) that I cannot seem to find
anywhere.

Have I missed somthing ?

TIA,

Ron the Frog, on the banks of the Paraguay River.
