   Problema
scorrono a scatti e senza audio.
Ciao a tutti

Paul, you need to get a program called rp-pppoe-2.2.tar.gz from Roaring
Penguin.
Their web site is www.roaringpenguin.com. Download the newest version and
install it per their instuctions. It's a very easy program to set up. Answer
the 5 or 6 questions when you RUN the adsl-setup program (actually, it runs
itself at the end of the questions) and you should be good to go. I use this
program myself. When I first tried it out I could connect but couldn't move
to
any web pages. I found that I needed to add my ISP's dns server address to
my
/etc/resolve.conf and all was well. That done, I connect and surf to my
heart's
delight. To disconnect you type ADSL-STOP. Good luck.

Oh, one other thing, pay VERY close attention to their 'how to connect' text
file. This will help to resolve any other problems you may encounter. They
really seem to know what they're talking about. :)

Strange... The S3's are fairly well supported cards... maybe you had
misconfigured your monitor and X went screwey from this?

I'll assume you are(were) running XFree86 3.3.x.

You'll want to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file and look for the lines
that say "HorizSyncxx-xxx" and "VertRefreshxx-xxx". You'll want to
change the values you see in x's. these are the ranges of Horisontal and
Vertical sync rates.

I would try to find the correct ranges on the internet, or maybe they are
written on the back (of course, if you still have the manual, that would be
the first place to look). I looked on the internet, but the only pages I can
find with anything resembling specs for Olivetti monitors are in German, and
I cannot understand German.

Anyway, if you can find the correct values, enter them in the XF86Config
file, and try to restart x. The monitors that i could find that had specs
following the names mentioned 64Khz... so I'd start with ranges that don't
go too far above that. At thr first sign of trouble, hit CTRL-ALT-Backspace,
and try something else.

That's about as much as I can offer in this arena.

program
i dont know why they named it the same as the file it creates but ohwell,
the
other way you might be able to do it is load linux in single user mode i
believe you could also use failsafe in the grub menu it should work, at
the

in
like this my comp loads x at start up here you will have something like
[$root@ /root] something like that i dont remember basically it says your
loged as root and your current location, type "xf86config" and you will
have
to select mouse keyboard, monitor and graphics card MAKE SURE you use the
factory defaults in your selections anotherwords match the specs of your
 monitor and graphics card!

OPTION #2 same as before but you are going to do some browsing instead of
using xf86config, your going to type cd /etc/x11/
you may have to do some "ls" what your looking for is something like
 xf86config.old,
 your x11 folder may have

[newbie] Installation Problem: No valid device for filesystems?

2000-09-16 Thread Brian Rourke

Hello. Sorry to trouble you all, but I've been having a terrible time trying
to install Linux 7.0 Complete on a new Gateway 750 Pentium III system. First
I'll list the details about my system:

Processor and Motherboard: Intel Pentium III, 800 MHz
128 MB Memory
30 GB 7200 RMP Ultra ATA66 Hard Drive
Ultra ATA 100 Controller for Windows
HD Controller: Intel 82371AB/EB PCI Master IDE Controller
Intel 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller

This next thing, listed in my Windows system summary, struck me as odd,
because I'd don't have an SCSI device that I know of. Anyway, here goes:

SCSI Controllers: Win95-98 Promise Ultra100 IDE Controller (I thought
IDE
and SCSI were different?)

What happens is that after I set up a Linux partition using the
PartitionMagic utility that came with the package, then I set up dual boot
with BootMagic. So far so good. But then when I run the install program
from my CDROM, it gets to the point where it sets up, mounts and formats
the partitions. Here it says an error occurred, no valid devices could be
found on which to install filesystems, and it tells me to consult my
hardware. All I can do at this point is halt installation.

My boot partition is under the 1024th cylinder, so that's not the
problem. I went through a whole other nightmare getting that set up
properly, but that's a different story.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've found lots of good information
on the Mandrake site, but nothing that addresses this problem directly (I
do with that Mandrake would stress this issue of the 1024th cylinder on in
the documentation, because with larger hard drives more and more people
will have to deal with this headache). MacMillan, which distributes
Mandrake in the United States, won't answer any of my requests for help,
even though I provided all of the information they requested and registered
as required. (Mandrake should consider dumping these losers, IMHO, and
finding someone who will push and support their product). My only hope is
the help of knowledgeable and experienced users.

I'd really like to try Linux, as I've wanted an alternative to Windows,
which I hate, for years. But I'm about to give up after all this frustration.

Thanks very much,

Brian Rourke

Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure that the ATA 100 controller is
not supported by Linux yet. I know for a fact that there are significant
similarities betwwen ATA66 and SCSI controllers ( afriend of mine regularly
modifies ATA66 cards to use them as SCSI cards ), so I imagine that those
similarities are even more pronounced with the ATA100 cards. That's most
likely where your problem lies.

I hope I can do all that, the typing is really difficult, I have to type

 Just one more question:

You'll want
to
change the values you see in x's. these are the ranges of Horisontal and
 Vertical sync rates.

I would try to find the correct ranges on the internet, or maybe they are
written on the back (of course, if you still have the manual, that would
be
the first place to look). I looked on the internet, but the only pages I
can
find with anything resembling specs for Olivetti monitors are in German,
and
 I cannot understand German.

Anyway, if you can find the correct values, enter them in the XF86Config
file, and try to restart x. The monitors that i could find that had specs
following the names mentioned 64Khz... so I'd start with ranges that don't
go too far above that. At thr first sign of trouble, hit
CTRL-ALT-Backspace,
 and try something else.

That's about as much as I can offer in this arena.

change it to 800 x 600, and something terrible happened:
the screen keeps blinking all the time and it won't start XWindows, it
 stays
in the login screen (text mode)and it's almost impossible to type

 in

I've tried a new install of LM 7.0 (Air), but it hangs after it gets to

Is there a command or a way that I can get back into de screen

   Or,
Is it better to download (with W98) LM 7.1 and install it over the old

I've also tried to boot with the boot disk but no way, it doesn't work,
I
guess I didn't make it correctly.

P.S.: I was so happy with my Linux working, included the internet
connection. I don't why I had to fiddle with the screen resolution, it
wasn't so terrible. Now I don't know what to do!!!

well you did what i did once for some reason the refresh rate is not
configured properly the only way to fix it is to use the "xf86config"
 program
i dont know why they named it the same as the file it creates but
ohwell,
 the
other way you might be able to do it is load linux in single user mode i
believe you could also use failsafe in the grub menu it should work, at
 the
command prompt log in as root, type "login" just in case you havent
loged
 in
like this my comp loads x at start up here you will have something like
[$root@ /root] something like that i dont remember basically it says
your
loged as root and your current location, type "xf86config" and you will
 have
to select mouse keyboard, monitor and graphics card MAKE SURE you use
the
factory defaults in your selections anotherwords match the specs

Re: [newbie] 2nd hardrive follow up

2000-09-16 Thread Dennis Myers

Do you have the Bios set to read CDROM, C, SCSI? It sounds like you are
still booting from the main Hard drive. If you don't know how to get in
bios just hold down the delete key when the computer is first booting up
like when it is reading ram, primary master, secondary master etc. Some
motherboards want you to hold down a different key so instead of delete
hit the Pause key on your keyboard and look at the bottom of the screen.
It should tell you down there somewhere to hit "somekey" to enter setup.
Once in bios the configuration for boot up is in the "Bios features
setup". You will see a selection "boot sequence" arrow down to that and
hit the keyboard Plus key (the one next to the Number pad group) and
change the setting to CDROM etc as shown at the begining of this post.
Once you have changed hit esc key and then F10, Y for yes and "enter"
key, the computer will start booting and you should have the CD in.
This should start you into the installation program and your off and
running. Sorry if I have included more info here than you needed but I
couldn't tell from your post if you knew all of the above. Luck, Dennis

[newbie] Network StarOffice Install

2000-09-16 Thread Rick Bonczek

When I downloaded the StarOffice 5.2 from Sun, the download was named
"so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin". When I executed this, the installation was a
local installation. I have several users of the workstation. The
StarOffice instructions were to run "Setup /net" from the CD-Rom for a
network installation, then install from there for each user. According to
this method, each user should add only 2 megs. My problem, is I have one
executable only, and do not have "Setup /net" in my download.

I've had lots of good help, many suggested:
"so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin /net", or "so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin -net"

However, I open my CD-Rom, click to open up a Terminal Window, I can enter
the "LS" command, and see the above file. When I type either of those two
commands, the reply is "no such command". I even try the above command
without the /net, or -net, and still get "no such command".

Am I missing something simple? Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I am was running fine Mandrake 7.0 kernel 2.2.14-15mdk on a i586. I am using
SAMBA to provide access between Linux and a couple of windows machines. One
of the windows machines (98SE), has a habit of committing suicide at regular
intervals (Thanks Micro$oft). After I have resuscitated the windows machine,
and try to access it through midnight commander, I get a largered banner
that says :File PROXY exists but cannot be stat-ed: Input/output error.

If, from the command line, I cd PROXY, then do an ls, I get

smb_retry: signal failed, error -3

Any ideas how to re-establish the link without having to reboot linux??

RE: [newbie] pppd Server? + other questions.

2000-09-16 Thread George Brooks

Thanks for the quick replies!!

The IP addresses are on a x.240 subnet and the pipeline is set to pass all
traffic at this point. The reason that I would like to force an Internet
connection is so that I can then access my network from the Internet. I do
not want to do this all the time, but depending on where I am, I get more
throughput using the Internet than I do on a dialup connection. I really do
not care if every time my phone rings the server connects to the internet
because I do not get that many calls where it would make a difference. The
only thing that I have to do to initiate a connection is ping something to
force the router to connect.

Would it be possible for the server to assign the "unused" IP addresses of
my subnet to use to get back out? Or, can I use the public IP addresses for
the incoming traffic and NAT them to one of the other "unused" IP address or
the IP address of the server itself?

I do have a copy of Micro Images X-server software on my laptop, but I keep
getting an error about permissions. I will check it out. I had a problem
yesterday where I could not access my W2k Server until I shut down the Linux
box. I guess it has something to do with Samba. If I get same problem
again, I will shut down that service to see if that solves the problem.

I do not know about SSH so I will try to find something online about it.

Thanks again,
George

OK, this one gets a little more complicated, because you have real IPs to
work with. This will require setting the linux box up to act as
router/firewall after the Pipline router. With only 13 IPs, I should assume
they're a block on the same subnet? Or are they "random"?

Is the Pipline set to pass everything?

I'm not clear on your need to force an internet connection by ringing your
home phone, sort of a "wake-on-phone call" kinda' thing? If you have a modem
that supports auto-answer, and hopefully it is not a winmodem, there might
be a way run a script on answer that logs your home machine into your ISP.
I'll ask around about this.

Since this is a bit more involved than usual, and it's it already half-past
midnight, and I'll be in Albany in the morning 'till Sunday nite, I hope
you'll give me a chance to think it over. Forwarding real IPs through a
linux firewall is a bit trickier than simply masquerading reserved internal
network IPs with one real external IP.
.
The raptor should not interfere with an SSH connection, but it may get in
the way of a VPN through the LAN. SSH can also do X-ll forwarding for gui
enjoyment, so you might take a look at this.

I'll get back to you when I return from my weekend trip.

I have an Ascend Pipeline 75 that allows me to access the Internet on

am
only worried about inbound traffic. (I also need to find a way to force a
connection to the Internet by ringing my home phone).

Internet -- Router -- Home LAN

I do want to access my home LAN from work if possible. (We have a raptor
firewall at work so I am not sure about PPTP). I mainly want to access my
network so that I can NAT and turn around and access newsgroups. I may
end
up just paying for SuperNews or something similar.

As I said before, I will try the firewall if I get everything else
working.
I will just build a new segment with just the router and the Linux box and
another segment with the Linux box with everything else.

Accessing your Linux box through the internet with a secure connection is

Ok i got a second hardrive for linux, had 7.0 installed on it but some
reason is said Kernel was corrupt, so i get 7.1 in mail and when i try to
boot up from CD it just goes to LILO and not the CD, how the heck do I
format my linux drive so i can do fresh install on 7.1?

You need to change the boot sequence in the bios. When your computer
boots, at the first screen it will give you the option, probably by
pressing "Delete" to enter setup mode. When there, you have to look
around for the place where you can change the sequence of boot devices
so that your CDROM is first. Then you can boot from the CD. You are
going to LILO because your HD is listed first. When you are through
installing, you can change back. Actually, a good default sequence is
A, HD, and then CDROM, if that is an option. The computer will look for
a boot record on the floppy drive, not find it and go to the HD to boot,
unless you need to use a boot disc, and then you are all set. Exactly
where you will find this setting depends on your Bios.

Hope this helps. Don J.

Re: [newbie] Testing new versions of kernels with a floppy

2000-09-16 Thread Anthony

mkbootdisk --device /dev/fd0 the_linux_kernel_version

I think that should work.

 Hi everybody,

It's been a while. Does any one know the exact files or instructions for
testing new kernels by copying them to a floppy? I'm using mdk7.1b.
