[newbie-it] e a forza di provare...
Ciao a tutti. Answer the 5 or 6 questions when you RUN the adsl-setup program (actually, it runs itself at the end of the questions) and you should be good to go. I use this program myself. When I first tried it out I could connect but couldn't move to any web pages. I found that I needed to add my ISP's dns server address to my /etc/resolve.conf and all was well. That done, I connect and surf to my heart's delight. To disconnect you type ADSL-STOP. Good luck. Oh, one other thing, pay VERY close attention to their 'how to connect' text file. [newbie] Installation Problem: No valid device for filesystems?

Anyway, here goes: SCSI Controllers: Win95-98 Promise Ultra100 IDE Controller (I thought IDE and SCSI were different?) What happens is that after I set up a Linux partition using the PartitionMagic utility that came with the package, then I set up dual boot with BootMagic. So far so good. But then when I run the install program from my CDROM, it gets to the point where it sets up, mounts and formats the partitions. Here it says an error occurred, no valid devices could be found on which to install filesystems, and it tells me to consult my hardware. All I can do at this point is halt installation. My boot partition is under the 1024th cylinder, so that's not the problem. I went through a whole other nightmare getting that set up properly, but that's a different story. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've found lots of good information on the Mandrake site, but nothing that addresses this problem directly (I do with that Mandrake would stress this issue of the 1024th cylinder on in the documentation, because with larger hard drives more and more people will have to deal with this headache). MacMillan, which distributes Mandrake in the United States, won't answer any of my requests for help, even though I provided all of the information they requested and registered as required. (Mandrake should consider dumping these losers, IMHO, and finding someone who will push and support their product). My only hope is the help of knowledgeable and experienced users. I'd really like to try Linux, as I've wanted an alternative to Windows, which I hate, for years. But I'm about to give up after all this frustration. Thanks very much, Brian Rourke

Re: [newbie] Installation Problem: No valid device for filesystems?
Don't quote me on this, but I'm pretty sure that the ATA 100 controller is not supported by Linux yet. I know for a fact that there are significant similarities betwwen ATA66 and SCSI controllers ( afriend of mine regularly modifies ATA66 cards to use them as SCSI cards ), so I imagine that those similarities are even more pronounced with the ATA100 cards. Strange... The S3's are fairly well supported cards... maybe you had misconfigured your monitor and X went screwey from this? I'll assume you are(were) running XFree86 3.3.x. You'll want to edit the /etc/X11/XF86Config file and look for the lines that say "HorizSyncxx-xxx" and "VertRefreshxx-xxx". You'll want to change the values you see in x's. these are the ranges of Horisontal and Vertical sync rates. I would try to find the correct ranges on the internet, or maybe they are written on the back (of course, if you still have the manual, that would be the first place to look). I looked on the internet, but the only pages I can find with anything resembling specs for Olivetti monitors are in German, and I cannot understand German. Anyway, if you can find the correct values, enter them in the XF86Config file, and try to restart x. The monitors that i could find that had specs following the names mentioned 64Khz... so I'd start with ranges that don't go too far above that. At thr first sign of trouble, hit CTRL-ALT-Backspace, and try something else. Re: [newbie] 2nd hardrive follow up
Do you have the Bios set to read CDROM, C, SCSI? It sounds like you are still booting from the main Hard drive. If you don't know how to get in bios just hold down the delete key when the computer is first booting up like when it is reading ram, primary master, secondary master etc. Some motherboards want you to hold down a different key so instead of delete hit the Pause key on your keyboard and look at the bottom of the screen. It should tell you down there somewhere to hit "somekey" to enter setup. Once in bios the configuration for boot up is in the "Bios features setup". You will see a selection "boot sequence" arrow down to that and hit the keyboard Plus key (the one next to the Number pad group) and change the setting to CDROM etc as shown at the begining of this post. Once you have changed hit esc key and then F10, Y for yes and "enter" key, the computer will start booting and you should have the CD in. This should start you into the installation program and your off and running. Sorry if I have included more info here than you needed but I couldn't tell from your post if you knew all of the above. Recently, we had a conference in Toronto, and I was impressed by the larger involvement with Linux software and other Linux related products. Although, it does seem the turn out from other companies is getting smaller. It will still take some time for linux to be seen for its full potential you also have to contend with linux still has some difficulties that cause current windows and mac users get scared and run off from the idea. i found that linux mandrake can at times be difficult to deal with, given i grew up on windows and dos but there are still bugs that can make life a little difficult for me such as installation apparently did not install all necessary files and i have to search out and install them myself this can drive a windows user nuts where practically everything is automated. In windows our problem is instability reasons why when i first got win 95 i started searching for another os and some one on aol mentioned "linux" something i never heard before something as i serached i found has a larger role in the world then the average user knew and its spread was growing. More and more people become aware of linux, and sometimes i am surprised when someone asks "whats linux?" the only words i can tell them is an os that will soon overcome windows in its superiority! But as i said it takes time we still have much work to do with linux upgrading features and intigrating others without sacrafising the kernels stability which from recent articles on linux.com suggest we may be heading that way, there has been another type of linux based os that could be integrated with all linux distrobutions it intoduces microprogramming techniques that enable this little demo os to fit on a 1.4mb floppy disk, including a browser, and internet access, with a couple games and a text editor. we are making alot of advances in our technology and its just a matter of time before linux powers us into the stars.

I think by then we will have moved to Linux 100% and be able to safely import our documents from Mac and/or Windows without a hitch. Many companies are already taking a serious look at Linux in the present version. Personally, I think this is the best time to begin working with it. RE: [newbie] pppd Server? + other questions.
Thanks for the quick replies!! The IP addresses are on a x.240 subnet and the pipeline is set to pass all traffic at this point. The reason that I would like to force an Internet connection is so that I can then access my network from the Internet. I do not want to do this all the time, but depending on where I am, I get more throughput using the Internet than I do on a dialup connection. I really do not care if every time my phone rings the server connects to the internet because I do not get that many calls where it would make a difference. The only thing that I have to do to initiate a connection is ping something to force the router to connect. Would it be possible for the server to assign the "unused" IP addresses of my subnet to use to get back out? Or, can I use the public IP addresses for the incoming traffic and NAT them to one of the other "unused" IP address or the IP address of the server itself? I do have a copy of Micro Images X-server software on my laptop, but I keep getting an error about permissions. I will check it out. I had a problem yesterday where I could not access my W2k Server until I shut down the Linux box. I guess it has something to do with Samba. If I get same problem again, I will shut down that service to see if that solves the problem. I do not know about SSH so I will try to find something online about it. Thanks again, George -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Greg Stewart Sent: Saturday, September 16, 2000 12:31 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] pppd Server? + other questions. OK, this one gets a little more complicated, because you have real IPs to work with. This will require setting the linux box up to act as router/firewall after the Pipline router. With only 13 IPs, I should assume they're a block on the same subnet? Or are they "random"? Is the Pipline set to pass everything? I'm not clear on your need to force an internet connection by ringing your home phone, sort of a "wake-on-phone call" kinda' thing? If you have a modem that supports auto-answer, and hopefully it is not a winmodem, there might be a way run a script on answer that logs your home machine into your ISP. I'll ask around about this. Since this is a bit more involved than usual, and it's it already half-past midnight, and I'll be in Albany in the morning 'till Sunday nite, I hope you'll give me a chance to think it over. Forwarding real IPs through a linux firewall is a bit trickier than simply masquerading reserved internal network IPs with one real external IP. . The raptor should not interfere with an SSH connection, but it may get in the way of a VPN through the LAN. SSH can also do X-ll forwarding for gui enjoyment, so you might take a look at this. I'll get back to you when I return from my weekend trip. --Greg. - Original Message - From: "George Brooks" [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have an Ascend Pipeline 75 that allows me to access the Internet on demand. I have 13 IP address to use. The router takes one, and my windows machines take up another 6. I do not need to use my box to dial out. I am only worried about inbound traffic. (I also need to find a way to force a connection to the Internet by ringing my home phone). Internet -- Router -- Home LAN I do want to access my home LAN from work if possible. (We have a raptor firewall at work so I am not sure about PPTP). I mainly want to access my network so that I can NAT and turn around and access newsgroups. I may end up just paying for SuperNews or something similar. As I said before, I will try the firewall if I get everything else working. I will just build a new segment with just the router and the Linux box and another segment with the Linux box with everything else. My LinuxConf only runs in text mode. Do you know the command line parameters to make it run in 'gui' mode? -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Greg Stewart Sent: Friday, September 15, 2000 8:40 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [newbie] pppd Server? + other questions. And if I press Enter, it,s gone. Nothing happens. But it's annoying me. Then I try to disable options Master Domain. And I still get this error message. But if I disable samba at startup, I don't get this message. Can anyone explain to me why ? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. -Pungki

When your computer boots, at the first screen it will give you the option, probably by pressing "Delete" to enter setup mode. When there, you have to look around for the place where you can change the sequence of boot devices so that your CDROM is first. Then you can boot from the CD. You are going to LILO because your HD is listed first. When you are through installing, you can change back. Actually, a good default sequence is A, HD, and then CDROM, if that is an option. The computer will look for a boot record on the floppy drive, not find it and go to the HD to boot, unless you need to use a boot disc, and then you are all set. Exactly where you will find this setting depends on your Bios. Hope this helps. Don J. -- Don W.
