Speed Loading
Yes - StarOffice is ssllooww starting up - I think just about
every comment one sees about this product makes the same point.

There are some rumours about that this could improve in the future -
Got good lung capacity

Printing
I guess you understand that StarOffice has it's own set of printer
drivers and that they are _ALL_ for PostScript(TM) printers.

What's hapenning here (I have the same problem) is that SO writes
the file out as a generic postscript file which is in turn passed
to Ghostscript which massages the file thru it filter ffor your
printer definition

I not sure that there is a workaround for this other than inceased
caffiene intake

Re: [newbie] Modem

2000-09-19 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear Mwinold:

You might wish to consider the U. S. Robotics 56k EXTERNAL modem. It was
recommended to me by some of our gurus. It connects every time. However,
please remember that it will work well ONLY for data, i.e. as a dial-up
connection to the Internet, NOT for faxing. But many Linux experts
recommend an external modem because of IRQ problems.

Yours,

Benjamin

Since I have "upgraded" to kernel-2.2.16-9mdk L-M no longer recognizes my

EXACTLY is different in the kernel between 2.2.15 and 2.2.16. I would like to

hi, I tried Exporting QIF to a directory. But windows wont let me Export

I've tried importing the files from Quicken but it is unable to recognise

I've tried each of those and all of them together, none would work. Is

but which one? it's certainly isnt in GT2 program.

Marciaas root edit your /etc/inittab file and change 3 to
a 5 in the following line like this:

id:3:initdefault:
  to
id:5:initdefault:

The next time you boot the system you'll come up in the gui
mode and will beable to login in the gui login manager.

Concerning your sound problem, try this. On your Panel (at
the bottom og f the screen) there is an icon for mixer. Open
it and make sure that the volume is turned up loud enough. If
this doesn't help then you'll need to supply more info about

Marciathat sounds like the behavior of the default viewer
(kghostview). You need to install the acrobat reader stored
in the archive linux-ar-40.tar.gz that is in the same
directory on CD #3 as the 5 books. Then you'll have the
proper reader for the .pdf format that those books are stored
in.

Re: [newbie] slow printer performance

2000-09-19 Thread Steve Weltman

Fabian,

StarOffice is a resource hog. If you aren't running a P3 600+ with like
128MB RAM, it's slow. It's NOT Linux's system (well, the O/S anyhow).
Please try a test...Use the KOffice products for a bit. Let me know if this
is faster than before (I don't have access to a printer at the moment, but I
have had lots of time to fiddle with SOffice 5.2, and it's slower than
molasses in January, even on my system... P2/300, 96MB, 2MB VRAM laptop).

As for the printing, all sounds correct. It should be a little faster than
that, but it's a little slower than windows with some inkjet machines for
some reason (I have no info why).

yeah...what Alan said. An external or ISA...if you decided to go with an
internal check the HCL on the Mandrake site to see if the modem you want
to get is on that list. If it is, then buy it!

check the HCL = Hardware Compatability List

it list all the hardware that is supported by Linux Mandrake. Makes the

Barry,

Sorry about that. I had no idea the list was naked like that where
modems was concerned. I've written the kind folks at Mandrake and hope
that they'll take my mild protest seriously.

When I saw that there was nothing on the list that dealt with Linux
friendly modems while most other hardware was addressed I could barely
believe my own eyes. My message to them reflected this and hopefully
they'll at least address it in some way.

In the mean time, for the most part ISA modems are usable while "most"
PCI modems are not. From what I've heard "all" externals are Linux
friendly and in most cases are desirable. My supervisor swears my them
and uses nothing else but his Supra Express 56K external. I myself use a
3Com US Robotics 56K modem. It's an ISA slot device and works great in
Linux.

Do a search at the newbie list archive because this was discussed not
too long ago and there was a URL given that will lead you to a
compilation of modems and their manufacturers that will work with Linux.
At the moment I can't recall what that web address is or I'd give it to
  you now.

happy hunting,

.gz is gzip'd, bz2 is bzip2'd.

Re: [newbie] Dual-boot question

2000-09-19 Thread Mwinold

you can but i would pull the other hard drive out and use the new one as a
primary to install windows then after your done swap it out and put it in as
the secondary, then you just have to add the commands in your boot loader to
the second os, although im not exactly sure what the system comands are,
windows may get confused because of the hard drive label and the fact that it
set up an mbr partition for its booting purposes. its the only solution i
know due to the fact that microsoft has recently altered the install program
to search for alternate partitions such as the 2fs format when it finds it it
prompts you to delete the partition or it will go no further

I noticed that LICQ 0.85 needs libcrypto.so.0 and libssl.so.0 as well as the
qt2. But I couldnt find the libcrypto and libssl anywhere on the MDK 7.2
Beta. Where can I find those? Are those files on some other programs?
QT2 doesnt have those files and niether does LICQ..

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 7.1 / Trying to get modemto work

Mark,

When I go Mandrakes home page and pull up the 'Supp. Hardware' link, this is all
I find under 'MODEM'

" Most modems and ISDN adaptors are supported. Most "Win-modems" are NOT
supported."

'Most' to me means many, but not all. I am comforted by a Manufacturer/Model Number
type of list, because invariably the first modem I pick won't be one of the many.

Welcome to Linux. I think you will enjoy it.

I hate to bring you bad news as you start out, but your modem is what is
refered to as a 'Winmodem'. It relies on Windows for its intelligence rather
than
an internal firmware. It won't work under Linux. (Although, I hear some
people
have been developing drivers for the winmodems.)

Linux.com has a growing list of compatible modems that should help you.
Basically, you are looking for either an External or an ISA. PCI cards can
work, but I have heard of a number of people struggling with IRQ conflicts.
You can find the list at the following link.

You can do what you've mentioned and you shouldn't have any trouble at all

[newbie] sound and KDM graphical login manager

Dear Anyone, Before my computer crash 4 weeks ago I had sound working in
Linux but I do not know why it worked finally. Now after my reinstall
(without windows 95 this time) I am trying to set up sound and I just get
error messages when I try to do it through sndconfig. I went through this
exact same thing before and finally I just put in a musical CD after weeks of
going through this and I had sound! Now I tried the CD but no sound. Is there
anything else I can do? Yes, my card is supported and is on the list. It did
work before. It says something about device resource busy. Would anyone be
able to help me on this one?

My other problem is- now that I finally have X going correctly( I think )I do
not get the graphical login manager where you login and pick a window
manager. I can only login in from the prompt with startx then I get KDE and
Gnome. I would like the choice of the other window managers, also. How do I
get the graphical login manager to come up?
Thank you very much,
Marcia

Did you install Lilo on the MBR or secondary boot header?
In saying that how about entering Drak Config and placing the Windows option
on the same partition as Lilo (hda 5 or where-ever) so that it would show when
at the Lilo prompt. This should then enable you to boot Windows.

Could you define "path setup correctly", "correct paths" and "path's
are screwed up"??? Are you talking about physical paths or paths that
will be searched when you execute a command?

If the later, the paths will be determined why who you "are". If you
log in as root, the paths will be determined by the shell config for
root, not the config for a user. Check the .bashrc file in the root
directory and compare it to the one in your user account folders. I

Open up DrakConf and then "Network Configuration". Then find out if you have a
static IP, or get your IP via DCHP from your ISP. Then fill out the apporitate
stuff in "Basic Host Information".

Or if you still haven't installed, during the installation it asks if you use a
networked computer, so say yes, and then it'll ask how you get your IP number,
and select either static or DCHP, depending on your case.

It took the install well i think. I havent heard sound yet, and I cant
connect to the web. Im on a network right now, can someone please help me
connect to the web. I saw on start up that eth0 had a problem and failed. Im
using a 3com PCMCIA Card.

Re: [newbie] kernel config

2000-09-19 Thread Anthony

Well, if you do "make xconfig" you can see all the options that you have now,
and then change them if you want. And I think "make oldconfig" will keep all
your old options, and only ask you for input if there is something new in the
kernel.

The HCF in the modem identification, I believe indicates that you have a
"software modem" more commonly known as a "winmodem". It is very likely NOT
going to work in Linux. I strongly recommend getting an external
(USRobotics). If an external is not in the cards, then get a jumpered ISA
modem. Most (though certainly not all) PCI's are windmodems.

This is a winmodem! As far as I can find it is not supported.

Take a look at http://www.linmodems.org - they are reported to be

As I recollect they were in the cooker for 7.2.

installed without hassle AFTER I remembered to remove 4.73 and

I'm using 2.0.4 which I have come to like quite a lot.
It was quite a transistion from Managing Your Money to

differences. I don't know what the transistion was
like for Quicken users.

Moneydance 3.0 alpha build 141 is out, but I wouldn't
recommend it for an intro. It has added some features
and is incorporating the Portfolio Tracking and on=line

My guess would be that when the bootloader was installed you changed the
default location which should have been hda1 therefore Lilo was installed
instead of Grub or that for whatever reason Grub was not installed from the
CD.
I have more bad news. You will most likly have to fomatt your drive and
re-install all 3 OSes.
Were you using only Win98 or even Win98 and NT you could use fdisk/MBR to
remove Lilo and restore your Win bootloader but because you have Win2000
this will not work.
If you have created a Win2000 Rescue disk you can possibly use it to
boot to your Win2000 installation CD and using the repair option restore
the Win bootloader. I say possibly because it has been my experiance that
the restore operation is either unable to find the Win2000 partition or if
it does find it, it reports that the partiion table is corrupt and it can
not repair.

[newbie] Network Printer Installation

2000-09-19 Thread Robert \"JTBob\" Holland

Hi,

I'm still chugging away on learning Linux. I have a Lexmark Optra S 2450
and a Lexmark Optra Color 1200 available on our network through specific
IP addresses.

I noticed on the Mandrake Linux site that these printers aren't supported.
Lexmark does have Linux drivers, but none specifically for Mandrake Linux.
There are a couple for RedHat Linux 5.2 and RedHat Linux 6.1. Will either
of these work? They also support Postscript. Would another printer driver
that prints Postscript be more appropriate?

Also, assuming I get a driver installed, how do I get the system to print to
an IP address rather than a printer port?

Thanks,
Robert

bzip2 is a new compressor that uses another compression algorithem like zip
and compress. gzip, compres,... are very similar, bzip2 is totally different.
After the great compression era in the 80s/beginning 90s the experts thought
compression algorithms can't be improved anymore in great steps. Then in the
ending 90s a guy (or more ?) found a totally different way to compress data
and its better than 'the old way'. Especially on on uncomporessed wav files
its much better compared to zip-based compressors.

Bzip(2) is another expample to never give up to find a better solution there
is sure one you only have to find it.

> How can I extract a file with a .bz2 extension?
With b2zip -d.
Type bzip2 --help for more paramters. There exists also a bzip command.
Don't ask me whats the differecnce about b2zip and bzip, probably is
b2zip an improved version of bzip. I don't use them often. .gz-files
are still more used than -.bz2.

mc probably handles this format now too.

I understand, because I rotate my backups also. I can get all my stuff on
a TR4 tape though, so I don't have the need to back up 50+ gigs of disk.
I know how much trouble that can be. I have done Novell, Win NT

Try www.coyote-linux.com

Fully automated. Problem? Juts reboot and walk away.
I'm uisng PPPoE, haven't tried the dial up.

Chris , If you know how to install second hard drive and load operating

RE: [newbie] Win2K dual boot?

2000-09-19 Thread Romanator

Login as root, and open the Grub folder. Open the file name menu.1st
Add two more '0's to the lined referring to booting up or time out.
By default, it should have 50. If you see 3, or 30, change it to 500.
The higher the number, the longer it takes for it to reach zero when it
times out.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong on this one, try changing the number: -1
Resave your changes and reboot your computer. Does the timer stop and wait?

thing is though, i don't have bootmagic, so the linux grub will boot first

nothing else.

ps- staroffice 5.2 is great at converting office2k files back and forth, you

You CAN dual-boot between two different hard drives. However, Windoze
expects to be on the first drive, and gets decidedly miffed if placed
anywhere else.

Linux, on the other hand, can go anywhere.

Your best bet would be to put Windoze on hda and Linux on hdb. Just
remember to re-install lilo (or whatever boot-loader you use) on the
boot sector of hda, and point it to Linux on hdb.

You may also need to modify /etc/fstab if such a move screws other mount
points.

Hello Adrian,

Your memory of a number skip, is probably referring to the way
the numbers show up because eide disc's can only have 4 primary
partitions...(legacy design reason that has to do with writing
tables)..but the last of these primary partitions can be an extended
partition with many partitions therein

so if partition four is the extended partition, that number 4
will not show up as a useful drive in your table, as it is only a bag
of logical partitions.

When you look at your usable partitions there will appear to
be a missing number, rather than the nice neat way your intended plan
shows...this doesn't cause any problem, if you know about the four
primary limitation, and then don't wonder where the number went

I have never used anything but linux partitions on my extended
drive, but there are some rules for mixing fat and linux..you better
do some research on partitioning large drives...I remember somethings
but just the ones I actually used.

OK, now start rotating your backups so that you have something to fall
back on, and watch your costs rocket.

Why rotate backups? Allow me to tell you a short true story.

I was working for a company that ran Novell NetWare 3.12 fileservers.
In my absence (and without my knowledge) a contractor made some changes
to one of the servers. A few weeks later, the server crashed.

It turned out that the moron had infected the DOS partition of the
server with the ripper virus (my anti-virus NLM could not see a virus
there).

Result? Slow corruption that went un-noticed until it blatted a crucial
sector and knocked out the SYS: volume.

Restore from last backup? Not unless I want to put all the corrupted
data back.

I think a cabinet full of hard drives would soon add up to more than the
cost of a tape streamer and tapes.

Ozz.

yes you can, either leave linux W/ LILO or GRUB as a
boot loader on the first hard drive and be sure to ad
WinME to your boot loader and tell it where to find
Windows.or I have seen some people just switch the
hard drive that boots whenever they want to run
Windowsnot very practical but still works.

You have to be root at the time you do the actual install because
writing to some parts of the directory tree only have root permissions.

So.. su to root in a terminal, navigate to the installation directory.
(which will most likely be the directory you downloaded the file to)

and execute the install file by typing './INSTALL' which I seem to
recall

Most likely you are not "root" when you're trying to do this. You
need to be to have permission to write anything into /user/...
