[newbie] Non-root user using a modem?

2000-11-10 Thread Lewis Bishop

Hi Guys,

I've just installed 7.2 on my PC at home and the install went fine - i was
pretty impressed that they'd thought of looking for SCSI devices at the
start - previously used RH6.2 and SuSE6.3 and had to set that up manually.
Anyway, after disabling the Aurora startup (which was hanging the boot
sequence) all is okay. The next thing is for me to get the internet
connection working.

I have it working fine under root but can't get it working for another user.
I have created a dial script and hang script and set privilidges
accordingly. The dail script does the "exec pppd..." command and the hang
script just looks for the ppp processes and kill's them (should i do it
another way?).

When the user tries to dial they get "failed to open /dev/modem". I have set
privs on /dev/modem and /dev/ttys0 (which it links to) but still no luck.
Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Lewis.

Can I, from installation, define which filesystem I want to use or do I

 Hi,

  I am trying to get my 3com 3c90x config'd. I have
entered all the data correctly per my isp; ip, mask,
 dns, host, domain etc
 (running a small network dsl-router-hub-box)

I checked the irq on windows, it gave 10 (dual boot).
So i tried irq=10,eth0 on Mandrake, no luck.
I get the following message during load up.
"symbol for parameter irq not found..ethx not
 initialized".

I have tried most combinations with ethx and irq.
I assume its not set correctly to the proper irq
and/or I am using the wrong ethx.
To run a control, I changed the irq 1-11 with both
eth1 and eth0 just be sure.

I get the same error, regardless.?

The hardware scan recognizes the card, and shows the
right driver for it as well.
As well, I know the card works.

 Any ideas...?
I am sure this is operator error. )
 Thanks for your time,

 john

Not a Linux (or any other OS) problem. Following is an OT
hardware problem (overclocked).

  Eric,
On that board (which is a _very good_ BX board, BTW), with a
83mhz fsb, your pci bus (that the HDD's, video card's, and including
any SCSI devices run on it) is at 41+mhz (83/2). Standard is
33.3mhz. Besides everything else, SCSI particularly won't
tolerate a pci bus that is that out of spec (not for long anyhow).
Your V3 AGP video card is way off spec too (83mhz @ 1:1). All those
devices are NOT overclocked, they're just plain ridiculously out of
spec. A _VERY POOR_ overclock/spec, IMNSHO.

Think of a computer system as a radio. You've been broadcasting
at a very wierd high signal, one that many system devices have been
straining or unable to read. If you didn't have such a high
quality, stable motherboard, I doubt you would'a made it this far.
I'm surprised it still boots SCSI at all.

Set your fsb back to the proper 66.666mhz and see if the problems
don't resolve themselves. That is if you haven't already ruined
some hardware. Otherwise, set your fsb to 100mhz if you think that
Celery can do it. That'll get your pci bus back to 100/3 ==
33.3mhz, and set your AGP to 2:3 (66.666mhz) for that Voodoo. If you
haven't already, put a fan on the V3's heatsink, an I sure hope
you've got'a super duty hs/fan on that Celery.

Don't try to boot Linux (or any other OS) at that speed tho.
Make a 'memtest86' floppy, and boot that, see if the system will
pass with -0- errors. Then at least it won't corrupt your Linux
ext2 fs, or your DOS registry (if you dual boot Windoze) if it
doesn't make it.

 FWIW, I run a p3-450 @ 608mhz (4.5x135/33.8/89/135, BUT I use a
_pci_ Voodoo3). Fairly well overclocked, no? BUT, my pci bus is
135/4 == real close to 33.3mhz ; and I didn't fall for any AGP
hype. Also, I wouldn't try runnin any other HDD's than IBM's,
Quantum's or older Western Digital's (2 years) IDE HDD's on an off
spec pci. If you've already done some damage, it's prob'ly to the
SCSI HDD or the AGP Voodoo.

 The 400 is the worst oc'r, a 333 is better. At 6x83 you're
runnin at 498, but your bus speeds are all but unusable, specially
for SCSI. You're right, that core won't do 6x100, ~550 is tops.
6x75 isn't much better. You're only option is to not overclock, or
get an IDE HDD (preferably IBM). The agp V3 might handle 83 mhz,
will prob'ly handle 75.

I know a Mystique won't, IIRC a Millenium won't either. Even if

Sorry for not providing all key information. When I bought the computer, we swapped the SCSI hard-drive that was in the computer for a larger IDE drive. LINUX boots from the IDE hard-drive. The CDROM drive is also IDE. There is nothing booting from the SCSI card, therefore the BIOS on the card does not turn on when the computer boots. I have been told that the BIOS on the SCSI card does not need to be on for the card to work with an external device such as a scanner or external CDROM drive.

I was aware that AIC-7xxx was the correct drive for the 2940U card, but I am not sure how to change the settings for scsi0 from AIC-7881U to AIC-7xxx. Is it simply a function of editing a file and change one or two lines? Can I do it with a text editor such as PICO?

Again, my apology for the lack of complete information. Being a true NEWBIE to LINUX, I appreciate the help of people that truly understand the system.

On Thu, 09 Nov 2000, you wrote:
When I installed 7.2 on my computer, it recognized the SCSI card as an

The correct Adaptec 2940u scsi card driver is "aic-7xxx"

When the computer boots, it sees and Adaptec 2940U and
since there is no boot device the bios does not turn on.

What do you mean "the bios does not turn on"? Are you talking about the scsi
bios? You should see that with the adaptec message "press cntrl A to
configure". Then your scsi harddrive and your scsi CD (if you have one) should
be shown. If you don't get a bios message from the scsi card, then the card
may be screwed up. If it isn't finding the boot device check your drive
cables, and if they appear to be o.k., on reboot do press "control a" and run
the Adaptec scandisk on your drive to see if its working. If your drive was
working before, then it can't be the scsi device address--you didn't change it
did you? My guess is your error is "No Boot Media Found" -- the scsi bios
doesn't see a hard drive on the cable. Also check your system bios to see if
the boot order has SCSI in it. If it doesn't, change it so that SCSI is there
somewhere--"A,C, SCSI" or something like that. Whoa, did you enable booting
from the CD Rom in the bios when you did the install? If so, check the system
bios first.

On openning the computer, I am fairly certain that I have only
one SCSI card and it is the 2940U. Is there a way without reinstalling 7.2,
to tell Linux that the card is a 2940U instead of a AIC-7881U. I want to
run an HP 5P scanner off the SCSI card. At present SANE or xscanimage
cannot find the scanner even though it is plug into the 2940 card. The
scanner worked perfectly with an old computer and Windows 95.

If I can get Linux to recognize the correct SCSI card, then I will ask my
next question about simple directions to get SANE working with an HP 5P
 scanner.

The computer sees the card, but since the boot hard-drive is an IDE drive, the BIOS on the SCSI card does not turn on.

If not, have you tried using it?

I tried to use xscanimage for the scanner. I won't swear that it setup correctly. However, I used HardDrake, and it sees a SCSI device, but says scsi0 is a AIC7881U and not the 2940U that is installed. After checking the computer from head to foot, I have found only 1 SCSI connector and that is on the 2940U card that is in the first PCI slot.

The AHA

specifies the driver type as far as I know and not the actual card. I also
have a 2940U and it was picked up on install and boot. It works fine. I
just can't tell where to check the driver settings from.

If you go by the reviews and hardware sites, the 4 best cards
are GeForce (Nvidia), ATI Radeon, Voodoo4 or 5, and Matrox G4xx
in that order. Problem is that's with Windoze.

Nvidia's, and ATI's are a problem on Linux (search the cooker
list archive and you'll see what the developers think). Main
problem is the proprietary binary only drivers, not the hardware.
3DFX is prob'ly one of the most Linux friendly manufacturers, and it
shows. Their cards work the best in Linux for 3d (Altho I'd
recommend the Voodoo3 rather than the newer ones at this time,
mostly based on price). Matrox cards are best regarded for their
excellent 2D performance, but 3D is disappointing with any OS
compared to Nvidia, ATI or 3DFX.

I use a sheet metal screw into the space between the fins. Just
one screw in one corner. Mine's been on there for over 1 1/2 years,
'cept to take it off to clean the heatsink. I also have a V3-2000.
It has a thermistor and you can monitor the temp using lm_sensors or
Khealthcare if your motherboard supports it. They run hot, mine
runs a steady 48C with a 4500rpm fan on it. In Windoze it's
overclocked to 178mhz, then it runs close to 60C. I've found it's
better to have the fan sucking air off, rather than blowing onto the
hs. YMMV, depending on your case ventilation.

that through the lsof command I can see what processes are toying around

processes agree they should stop when shutting down, and that is what
keeps the partition 'busy'. A clumsy workaround that I found is

umount -r /usr

which tries to unmount the /usr and if that won't do, remounts it
read-only. If I then shut down and switch off when the system hangs (at
"INIT: no more processes in this runlevel") there is no more check of the
drive. Mounting it read-only seems to close the drive in an orderly

But still, I would like to know what causes this, and how to fix it. I

[newbie] Recommendations, please?

2000-11-10 Thread Ronald J. Hall

I checked the hardware list on Mandrake's site, and I'm looking for 2 things:

network card
SCSI card

I see that Adaptec and 3Com are mentioned quite frequently. Can anyone (really
looking for personal experience here!) recommend good choices along these
lines? I can't really afford top of the line items, but am looking for good,
solid price/performance. (I know the Nic - 10/100 cards are relatively cheap).

If it helps, I already have the Umax 1200s, and will have a Yamaha SCSI CDRW
(new model/late release) soon. Any networking I would be doing would be small,

[newbie] libqt, libstdc++, GLIBC 2.2 not installed?

2000-11-10 Thread Chris Cooper

I'm trying to install avifile (so I can play ASF and DivX), trying to
install the rpm, I get three errors
about various libs not being installed:

error: failed dependancies:
   libqt-mt.so.2 is needed by avifile-0.50-1
   libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 is needed by avifile-0.50-1
   libpthread.so.0(GLIBC_2.2) is needed by avifile-0.50-1

I've tried (re)installing various packages from the CD's, but no avail.
Does anyone know which packages
I need to install to get these libs (and where I can find them)? Thanks
in advance

  scsi card

BUT, my pci bus is
135/4 == real close to 33.3mhz ; and I didn't fall for any AGP
hype. Also, I wouldn't try runnin any other HDD's than IBM's,
Quantum's or older Western Digital's (2 years) IDE HDD's on an off
spec pci. If you've already done some damage, it's prob'ly to the
SCSI HDD or the AGP Voodoo.

3)I've got an ActionTec 56K PCI modem installed and I have to type the
following every time I want to get on line:

setserial /dev/modem uart 16550A port 0xdc00 irq 11

I have it as the last line in /etc/rc.d/rc.local but it doesn't init the modem

This also, wasn't a prob. in 7.0

Now a question:
Has anyone tried using the ZIP CD 650 cd rewritable and the USB version of
the ZIP 100 drive in 7.2?

Any help will be greatfully appreciated.

this can happen because of several reasons.
 1) you try to install mandrake on a too small space
 2) your video card is not supported (though I doubt this)
 3) you tried to upgrade without enough space (which you didn't do.)
 4) xfs (YCUK!!!) isn't running

Mandrake tells you that you might not have enough space, but continues
installing anyway, but skips packages it deems as not important,
 sometimes fonts.

you can try to restart xfs by running /etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs restart,
and if that still fails, edit /etc/passwd, and give xfs 0:0
 user and group IDs.
I know this isn't secure, but xfs is a piece of shit that should
have been better left for dead.

 hope this helps.
 Slaine

PS, I don't have libfont* on my own machine, anyway.

Thanks for the help, but, it didn't. I can not even find the files for SVGA
and xfs won't restart or rstart or any thing. I tried an install after I
blanked (i.e. no format or anything on it ) the hard drive. Once again it
failed to load headers and thus i was unable to config network, printer , or
xserver. I think I must have burned a bad copy. I will try one more time and
then it's wait for the deluxe McMillan package, which I had planned on buying
anyway. I really don't understand it, the install looks so good while
loading the packages and then just goes down the toilet. Well, Life is good,
just don't weaken!

Re: [newbie] O.K. here's my problem

2000-11-10 Thread S. Stubbs

Just to let you know I have a Iomega ZipCD 650 cd writer drive
and I am using mdk 7.2.
For informative purposes, the drive is recognized by this distro
upon installation.
It does work in this distro, but currently I am having newbie problems
getting to mount the cdrom drive and the floppy drive, the problem
mostly is due to supermount, which many have recommended that
I remove from the fstab, but as newbie I don't know exactly what to do.
This supermount is also affecting my floppy the same way.
I have not been able to access cdrom or floppy on my own yet. However
if there is a program, like cdburning prog or like the makebootfloppy prog,
the drives are mounted and work through the program.
All I know now, as a newbie, is that this "supermount" thingy is a
pain in butt, and I am having a time dealing with it.

Subject: [newbie] O.K. here's my problem

Just installed 7.2 and have the following problems:

1) Can't access fd0. I get the following: "Can't enter directory /mnt/floppy"
This wasn't a problem under 7.0. It will let me format floppies though.

2) I've got a Zip drive connected to the computer. Works fine under Windoze
but when I try to install it under LM 7.2 I get the following error msgs for
ppa and imm:

modprobe -v imm
/sbin/insmod /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/scsi/imm.o
Using /lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/scsi/imm.o

/lib/modules/2.2.17-21mdk/scsi/ppa.o: insmod ppa failed

3)I've got an ActionTec 56K PCI modem installed and I have to type the
following every time I want to get on line:

setserial /dev/modem uart 16550A port 0xdc00 irq 11

I have it as the last line in /etc/rc.d/rc.local but it doesn't init the modem

This also, wasn't a prob. in 7.0

Now a question:
Has anyone tried using the ZIP CD 650 cd rewritable and the USB version of
the ZIP 100 drive in 7.2?

Any help will be greatfully appreciated.

Re: [newbie] how do I get 7.2 to mount a win2k partition?

2000-11-10 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

What is important here is not what OS created the partition, but the type of
partition. Is the partition NTFS (the WinNT/Win2K preference) or FAT (the
Win9x default). If it is the former, then you are pretty much out of luck.
Linux at this time cannot read or write NTFS. You may be able to locate
several projects out there developing this capability, but these are still in
their infancy. I believe that programmes like PartitionMagic can translate
NTFS to FAT, which is fully supported by Linux.

[newbie] Getting X to work on an HP n3410 Laptop

2000-11-10 Thread Lance Borden

Hi,
I'm sending this to both newbie and expert, because I'm having such trouble
finding the answer, even from the HP people and the Mandrake support...

I'm trying to install Mdk 7.2 on my HP Pavilion n3410 laptop...
K-6II, 550 Mhz
88 MB RAM
Trident CyberBlade i7 graphics card
Digital 1024x764 lcd display

I've got it installed, but can't get the configuration right for X. The
installation finds a generic monitor 1024x764, finds Trident CyberBlade
(generic), but this doesn't work for me. I try all kinds of resolution
settings with no success. I've also tried several other monitor choices
(Generic lcd 1024x764, Generic lcd 800x600, and several others). Nothing
works. I've tried the "define it yourself" monitor, but have no idea what
the vertical refresh and horizontal refresh rates are for this display (the
HP technical assistance people don't know, either :(

So, I'm stuck w/o any good ideas or things to try. Have any of y'all gotten
Mdk up and running on the HP n3410? If so, what settings did you choose to
get X to work? Or, anyone out there knowledgeable enough to know where to
direct me? Thanks for the help.

PLEASE CC: ME DIRECTLY, AS I'M NOT CURRENTLY SUBSCRIBED TO EITHER LIST! THANKS!

Lance

Subject: [newbie] CDRW can read CD-ROMs

Hey, I discovered in the mandrake page
 (http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/Tutorial/CDburner/pages/) that
the problem with my CDRW is a problem of Mandrake (of kudzu) and the
Mandrake equipement shows how to solve it. It works great, now I
have my Yamaha CDRW working fine.
 So one problem less.
The next I need to solve is that of the video-card aceleration
