[newbie-it] Suoni e intel chipset 810
-- Saluti Cosma Scaramella

[newbie] Non-root user using a modem?
Hi Guys, I've just installed 7.2 on my PC at home and the install went fine - i was pretty impressed that they'd thought of looking for SCSI devices at the start - previously used RH6.2 and SuSE6.3 and had to set that up manually. Anyway, after disabling the Aurora startup (which was hanging the boot sequence) all is okay. The next thing is for me to get the internet connection working. I have it working fine under root but can't get it working for another user. I have created a dial script and hang script and set privilidges accordingly. The dail script does the "exec pppd..." command and the hang script just looks for the ppp processes and kill's them (should i do it another way?). When the user tries to dial they get "failed to open /dev/modem". I have set privs on /dev/modem and /dev/ttys0 (which it links to) but still no luck. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks, Lewis.

I won't swear that it setup correctly. However, I used HardDrake, and it sees a SCSI device, but says scsi0 is a AIC7881U and not the 2940U that is installed. After checking the computer from head to foot, I have found only 1 SCSI connector and that is on the 2940U card that is in the first PCI slot. The AHA specifies the driver type as far as I know and not the actual card. I also have a 2940U and it was picked up on install and boot. It works fine. I just can't tell where to check the driver settings from. William Lott PO Box 1063 Amston, CT 06231-1063 Office: (860) 486-3885 Home: (860) 228-2242 Fax: (603) 658-0299 E-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have tracked the following down. Here is what the error log says after matching the host config irq to harddrakes results on the device. Problem is that's with Windoze. Nvidia's, and ATI's are a problem on Linux (search the cooker list archive and you'll see what the developers think). Main problem is the proprietary binary only drivers, not the hardware. 3DFX is prob'ly one of the most Linux friendly manufacturers, and it shows. Their cards work the best in Linux for 3d (Altho I'd recommend the Voodoo3 rather than the newer ones at this time, mostly based on price). Matrox cards are best regarded for their excellent 2D performance, but 3D is disappointing with any OS compared to Nvidia, ATI or 3DFX. -- Tom Brinkman[EMAIL PROTECTED] Galveston Bay

I found that through the lsof command I can see what processes are toying around on the /usr partition, but that's quite a load. Apparently not all processes agree they should stop when shutting down, and that is what keeps the partition 'busy'. A clumsy workaround that I found is umount -r /usr which tries to unmount the /usr and if that won't do, remounts it read-only. If I then shut down and switch off when the system hangs (at "INIT: no more processes in this runlevel") there is no more check of the drive. Mounting it read-only seems to close the drive in an orderly manner. But still, I would like to know what causes this, and how to fix it. I already killed as many things as I can, like USB, IRDA, Postfix etc. but to no avail... Paul - Original Message - A problem that I have never had before is shutting down. Following is an OT hardware problem (overclocked). Eric, On that board (which is a _very good_ BX board, BTW), with a 83mhz fsb, your pci bus (that the HDD's, video card's, and including any SCSI devices run on it) is at 41+mhz (83/2). Standard is 33.3mhz. Besides everything else, SCSI particularly won't tolerate a pci bus that is that out of spec (not for long anyhow). Your V3 AGP video card is way off spec too (83mhz @ 1:1). All those devices are NOT overclocked, they're just plain ridiculously out of spec. A _VERY POOR_ overclock/spec, IMNSHO. Think of a computer system as a radio. You've been broadcasting at a very wierd high signal, one that many system devices have been straining or unable to read. If you didn't have such a high quality, stable motherboard, I doubt you would'a made it this far. I'm surprised it still boots SCSI at all. Set your fsb back to the proper 66.666mhz and see if the problems don't resolve themselves. That is if you haven't already ruined some hardware. Otherwise, set your fsb to 100mhz if you think that Celery can do it. That'll get your pci bus back to 100/3 == 33.3mhz, and set your AGP to 2:3 (66.666mhz) for that Voodoo. If you haven't already, put a fan on the V3's heatsink, an I sure hope you've got'a super duty hs/fan on that Celery. Don't try to boot Linux (or any other OS) at that speed tho. Make a 'memtest86' floppy, and boot that, see if the system will pass with -0- errors. Then at least it won't corrupt your Linux ext2 fs, or your DOS registry (if you dual boot Windoze) if it doesn't make it. FWIW, I run a p3-450 @ 608mhz (4.5x135/33.8/89/135, BUT I use a _pci_ Voodoo3). Fairly well overclocked, no? BUT, my pci bus is 135/4 == real close to 33.3mhz ; and I didn't fall for any AGP hype. Also, I wouldn't try runnin any other HDD's than IBM's, Quantum's or older Western Digital's (2 years) IDE HDD's on an off spec pci. If you've already done some damage, it's prob'ly to the SCSI HDD or the AGP Voodoo. -- Tom Brinkman[EMAIL PROTECTED] Galveston Bay _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Re: [newbie] O.K. here's my problem
Just to let you know I have a Iomega ZipCD 650 cd writer drive and I am using mdk 7.2. For informative purposes, the drive is recognized by this distro upon installation. It does work in this distro, but currently I am having newbie problems getting to mount the cdrom drive and the floppy drive, the problem mostly is due to supermount, which many have recommended that I remove from the fstab, but as newbie I don't know exactly what to do. This supermount is also affecting my floppy the same way. I have not been able to access cdrom or floppy on my own yet. However if there is a program, like cdburning prog or like the makebootfloppy prog, the drives are mounted and work through the program. All I know now, as a newbie, is that this "supermount" thingy is a pain in butt, and I am having a time dealing with it. susan - Original Message - From: John Batt To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, November 10, 2000 3:05 PM Subject: [newbie] O.K. here's my problem Just installed 7.2 and have the following problems: 1) Can't access fd0. Re: [newbie] how do I get 7.2 to mount a win2k partition?
What is important here is not what OS created the partition, but the type of partition. Is the partition NTFS (the WinNT/Win2K preference) or FAT (the Win9x default). If it is the former, then you are pretty much out of luck. Linux at this time cannot read or write NTFS. You may be able to locate several projects out there developing this capability, but these are still in their infancy. I believe that programmes like PartitionMagic can translate NTFS to FAT, which is fully supported by Linux. On Fri, 10 Nov 2000 07:29, abe wrote: It can be done yes?
