[newbie] Re: ls120, almost success

2001-01-08 Thread Penndragon

Hi Guys

A slight update that might be of use to some. The stability issue seems to
have been resolved by repacing all insmods's with modpobe's in
/etc/rc.d/rc.local.

Hope that helps.

Subject: ls120, almost success

Hi Guys

Seems I'm close to succeeding with the ls-120 (parport model) on Mandrake
Linux 7.2

What's happenning is that the system boots and regognises it, I can then
mount it and list the files. But when I use a prog like xmms to play the
mp3's on it, it just hangs the entire system to the point I physically have
to push the reset button. I've had to modify 3 files to get it this far, as
follows

/etc/fstab

/mnt/ls-120 /mnt/ls-120 supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/pf0 0 0

/etc/modules.conf

pre-install supermount modprobe paride
pre-install supermount modprobe epat
pre-install supermount modprobe pf

and lastly
/rc.d/rc.local

/sbin/insmod paride
/sbin/insmod epat
/sbin/insmod pf

Anyone got ideas as to where I've gone wrong here?

James

Re: [newbie] Installing Linux Mandrake 7.2 from hard disk...

2001-01-08 Thread Anthony

Does 'linux7.2' have a subdirectory called 'i586'? If you do, try typing
in the full path to that level. If you renamed the 'i586' directory
'linux7.2', you need to change it back again, as this is the folder name
that the installer is looking for. The 'i586' directory has 8
subdirectories: boot, doc, dosutils, images, lnx4win, Mandrake, misc and
tutorial, as well as 11 other miscellaneous files.

Good luck!

Uh, Dude, I think you may have something else going on/misconfigured. I
have a couple of P200, one with 64meg and 1 with 96, and both run pretty
darn well (the 64 meg machine is 7.1, the other 7.2). Not a lot of
difference in speed between them and my PIII 733 with 128 meg. In fact,
I use the 96 meg machine more than any other (I'm using it now). A P200
is perfectly adequate for Linux, IMO. I like Gnome, but have been
running kde2.0 on 7.2 a lot lately, and it's certainly not slow. So, if
you can't run on a 200/64 I would refer to my first sentence.

Oh yeah, Netscape loads slow for me too--even with the 733, the nature
of the beast, but once it loads it runs pretty fast (at least as fast as
my crummy rural lines will let it).

You can use a Win98 boot disk.
At the prompt enter fdisk/MBR. This will restore your NT bootloader if it
was not damaged.

If this does not work your only option is to use use your NT installation
disk and try Rescue mode. This can work if you have only 1 NT partition and
if it is NTFS. If you have multiple partitions or installed as FAT32 you
will get an error/warning message.

I have read some reports from other newsgroups that this can cause
problems with WinNT.

Anybody able to verify that using a Win98 book floppy, and fdisk /mbr
will work.

Actually, I disappointed that the Mandrake install did not give me
the option to include NT in the GRUB. Or at least some very strong
warnings in the setup programs or warnings in the documentation about
setting up dual boot systems with NT in the primary partition.

Re: [newbie] Lost NT Partition

2001-01-08 Thread Michael O'Henly

I hate to tell you this but you may be out of luck unless you made an
emergency repair disk for NT. NT insists on owning the Master Boot Record
which is GRUB is installed by default. (This is why most people recommend
installing Linux before NT -- it is apparently less of an issue with other
flavours of Win9x.)

I believe there are ways around this. For instance, most Linux boot loaders
may also be placed on the first sector of the /boot partition (I think I've
got that right). And tools like Boot Magic may be installed -- with
difficulty -- after NT and Linux to allow you to choose which to boot into.
(I'm sorry I don't remember the details, but I was in your situation once and
did manage to get Boot Magic shoehorned in place. It was one of the
experiences that convinced me that life without Microsoft products was worth
considering.)

Good luck.

[newbie] Installing Mandrake 7.2 from ISO image

2001-01-08 Thread Andrew Iovannisci

Hello,

I am trying to install Mandrake 7.2 . I have downloaded the file
mandrake72-inst.iso and burned it onto a cd. I have also crated a floppy
boot disc to start the installation.
When I restart my computer, Linux loads from the floppy, and then I get
the following error message:

' cd rom device does not seem to contain a Linux Mandrake cd'.

Obviously, I'm not doing something right. Can someone lend me a clue?

Doing this for every user didn't fix the problem. FYI, I ended up
uninstalling netscape and netscape-comm, deleting every ?netscape file and
dir, and reinstalling the RPMs. This fixed the problem.

Thanks to all.

Well, I was gonna say you need to restart the X server, was
that a normal power (shut down) down or did you just kill power and
then need to fsck? That might've corrupted the system. I really
don't know what could be your problem (I'll spare you my opinion about
anything SiS). Try 'rpm --rebuilddb', then you might try 'rpm -Uvh
--allfiles *' on the XF rpms if that doesn't work. I believe that
replaces the rpm files whether they need it or not. Then 'X -version'
should say "XFree86 Version 4.0.2 / X Window System . i686" You do
have a i686 proccessor, right ? Those were 686 rpms. What does
'rpm -qa | grep XFree' say?

Get online and find bootpart. It is a small DOS program. Read the instructions, it will
help you to recreate the bootloader for NT. That way you have that thing back.
Then, when installing Mandrake, make sure you do NOT let the installer write the
Grub/lilo
loader to /dev/hda1. Create a separate /boot partition and make it write the loader
there,
or in the / (root) partition.
After that, you reboot into NT. Run bootpart without parameters to get a listing of
partitions, and note the partition number that you had the linux loader installed on.
Then
run bootpart c:\linux.bin and this will create a 512 byte file
linux.bin.
Edit Boot.ini so it will allow you to run linux, and make that point to c:\linux.bin.
That
way you first load NTloader, from there Grub/lilo, and from there you go into linux.
Take it from someone who's been there. ;)
Good luck.

[newbie] Installing Linux Mandrake 7.2 from hard disk...

2001-01-08 Thread Kat

Hi,

I am trying to install Linux Mandrake 7.2 from the hard disk. I have
downloaded the entire package from the net and it is stored in my hard
disk (in the linux partition).

I created a boot floppy by using the command:

dd if=hd.img of=/dev/fd0

Then, when I boot from this floppy, it asks me for the location of
the Mandrake directory. When I give the path to where it is located (in
my case, it's in /linux7.2 directory), it gives me an error like this:

Error reading second stage ram disk

The system hangs at this point and I am not able to proceed further.

Any help regarding this pblm would be highly appreciated.

Thanks
Kat.

Hi, Adrian.
http://mandrakeuser.org/hardware/hremov3.html
And look at the section

CD-R(W)
A very popular topic ;-). IDE CD-R(W) drives (i.e. CD burners) are not handled like
simple
CD-ROM drives, but as SCSI devices.

The problem is indicative of a IRQ conflict. Check your IRQs and see if
someone isn't sharing the mouse IRQ, normally 12. If that is the case you
will have to change one of the settings and I would not change the mouse from
IRQ it's on. So that leaves the other function trying to use the IRQ. Don't
know what else it would be if not that. Somebody jump in here and tell us
both how to switch IRQs in linux even if I am wrong above. Good Luck

[newbie] Network solution

Please forgive the simplicity but I think its relevant.

I purchased Mandrake 7.2 just before Christmas. I have been struggling to
get the internet/networking on my new Linux box but did not give up in
frustration. After many uninstall - wipe disk - reinstall to try and get a
"clean" system I finally did something that turned the corner. I reset the
parameters on my firewall (ZoneAlarm Pro) back to their defaults. Wonder of
wonders the internet came up immediately and all is well so far.

Please take this away from my trials: it is usually the easy and overlooked
things that hold the answer.

there is a great artical at linuxnewbie.com about triple booting linux/nt4/win98.

man". thus, you must install linux first, then NT.

my experience with NT is limited, so i can't tell you from experience how to get your

RE: [newbie] Interrupt sharing

2001-01-08 Thread Bob Currey

Well, I should also be visiting that valley, tonight. I don't know how you
are setup, and my Linux knowledge is quite limited (2 months), but I'm
usually pretty good at making things work.

My old machine is a dual boot with Win/95, as that's what I used to figure
out what hardware settings to give Linux. It would have been many moons to
figure it out without the Win/95 system resource usage screen info. It
wasn't easy, even given that to get rolling due to the number of devices
(all IRQ's in use).

My old machine is a Pent 200 w/64mb ram, and I need to replace it as its so
slow as to be painful in X windows apps (Netscape 30 sec to 1 min per screen
change). The machine is maxxed out CPU wise, and memory could only be
upgraded by tossing the 64mb, max is 128mb. I guess I'll do that if I have
to, and just use the Linux in text mode as a server, and reload the new box
under Win/2000 as a desktop on my Linux served home LAN if I can't get the
new machine to run. Until reading Tom's message below, I hadn't considered
the possibility of needing to do so. I worry about the technical skill
level needed for a Linux newbie to survive, but there isn't anything that
can be done, as we keep buying bigger, faster, trickier machines, which are
inherently more difficult to get running.

LOL, my new machine is much faster, being a Dual PIII-600 with 512mb sdram
and Dual UW Adaptec SCSI 7895 on board, but as per above, it looks to be
more complicated, with the sharing stuff you have found as well. I have
serious doubts if I'll be able to overcome this after reading the messages
below and looking at the referenced site, with its nice generalized stuff,
but very little useful for loading a Linux Mandrake 7.2 machine. I had a
devil of a time just getting Win/98 loaded due to a Ricoh IDE CDRW that
can't boot and an NEC IDE CD Changer that can't boot. I don't have the
sound board or 2nd NIC in, and I'm already out of IRQ's, and the 1st NIC
(Intel P10) is failing, even under Win/98. So my only alternative will be
to shut down my Linux server, cannabalize it, get the new one up on Win/98,
and then try to get Mandrake 7.2 loaded and running once I know what
settings will run under Win/98. Because of the IRQ problem, I can't see how
I'll get the Soundblaster 16 card to work, as well as 2 NIC boards. Sounds
like a tall order, but its the only way I know. I'll probably have to go to
a PCI sound card that will share an IRQ, from the looks of it. I already
have one of those that won't do Linux (Ensoniq with ES1370 chip), but I'll
give it another chance, LOL.

I agree with part of Tom's sequence, that being get hardware issues
resolved, 1st, then the OS. It certainly can't hurt and will likely help,
the more you read up, but I don't like calling it "user error", that things
are very tricky, and wish things were more doable. Even for me, its
daunting. If I figure out the IRQ stuff, I'll let you know what it took, if
not, I guess we can add a techie to the "user error" list and I'll try
Win/2000 on it...

BTW, I hate MS with a passion, but not so much as to be willing to give up
my new dual 600,

BobC

Well, I gotta say it. I've found that I'm best served if I
approach problems as caused by user, hardware, OS. In that order.
It seems to me, people who have the most problems, tend to try and
approach them in just the opposite order.

Your best source for getting IRQ's sorted out is your mainboard's
documentation. Many board manufacturers specify which slots various
cards should be in, depending on the combination of cards used. You
might have to go as far as d/l'ing the technical docs and studying them.
Next best bet would be to email your board's tech. support and ask them
for assistance.

I suspect your hardware is OK, but it's not configured properly.
Which is a user error, right ? In any event, after you've become
intimate with your hardware and it's configuration, I believe you'll
get better help on the LM expert list, or from the linux setup and
hardware newsgroups.

I am not sure, but, do you have your soundcard
working now ? These errors happen when your soundcard
is not working. There are many ways to make it work,
define, other than drakes. ( like /etc/conf.modules,
or was it /etc/modules.conf , you can add a " alias
sound emu10k1)

I believe that your modules are not installed while
you are trying to run these apps. before running a
mixer or so, open a terminal window and type "lsmod".
This shows you the installed modules. Check if you
have emu10k1 , soundcore, ac97. If they are there and
you still have troubles, then I advice you to go to
opensource.creative.com and get the latest sblive
driver, and install it on your system. (it is really
easy and there are docs about it, if you want I can
send you some.)

If you dont see those modules I said, with lsmod, try
at the terminal

modprobe soundcore
modprobe emu10k1

if you did not get any error messages, they are
installed correctly, check with lsmod.

if these modprobe stuff corrects your troubles, just
add these modprobe lines to the end of the file

/etc/rc.d/rc.local

so they shall be run automatically at every boot.

Also, just in case, if there is not one, add

alias sound emu10k1

to the /etc/conf.modules file. (or was it
modules.conf)

--

but, honestly, these are the detail things you can do.
I advice you try to run sndconfig in a terminal
window, before doing these manually, because it will
do these automatically.

ps: module means sort of driver.

goodluck.

[newbie] logrotate

Hi all!
I have a server that is running 7.1, and as of the past week or two I have
been having problems with logrotate. The crazy thing just keeps going! I
will come into work and the hard drive will be chugging away, the only way I
can get it to stop is by killing logrotate. Over the weekend, I will come
in and there will be three logrotates running, ie they never get done before
cron starts the next one. Any idea what I need to do to fix this? It is an
old pentium 133, with 32megs ram, but it ran fine for months without a
problem, now all of a sudden this.

[newbie] Adaptec AHA-2920 woes

2001-01-08 Thread John Button

I recently acquired the Mandrake Powerpack Deluxe to install
on
my old Win95 box.

The box has been running ok as a win95 box with;

Pentium 120 MHz
64Mb RAM
1 IDE Hitachi CDROM
1 SCSI Yamaha (CDRW4416S)
1 HP SCSI DAT (SureStore Tape 2000)
1 dual 3.5"/5.25" floppy drive
1 3com 3C905C-TX NIC
1 Sound Blaster AWE32 audio card
2 2Gb SCSI hard drives
1 Adaptec 2920 adapter.

I have yet to be able to install linux regardless of how I try.

I can get through the partition and format portionor so it
seems...but when the install process starts looking for packages
or installing them - the install process dies - badlyit all
just hangs!

The consistent error that appears (on the alt-ctrl-F4 console)
complains about the scsi adapter (really being a Future Domain
unit) not having a BIOS.  Then it all locks up, dumps some
stuff
to the screen and then I reach for the reset button.

I would really like to set up a dual boot system so I could still
test web pages under Win95 and older browsers, as well as dive
into the linux world.

Is there something less than wonderful about the Adaptec AHA-2920?

It appears to be one of Adaptec's acquired company's designs rather
than something they designed themselves.

Has anyone else had these problems?

Is there any cure besides going for a more betterest SCSI adapter?

TIA!!  (::)

I would suggest reinstall and watch the screens given by ctrl-alt-f3, f4 and
f5 Something is not installing correctly.

Our experience is that not all ATA/100 drives can really do ATA/100, so start
the install with this

At the splash screen hit F1

type in

linux ide0=noautotune

and try that... Likely the missing grep simply wasn't installed due to a
disk write error, and perhaps a few other packages are missing, but a missing
grep is a show-stopper.

If you have the Promise controller, you can do RAID 1 under any linux, with
recompilation of the drivers, however, be advised that IDE Raid is not
hardware. It is a BIOS/firmware kludge that emulates real hardware RAID.
If you do not have the promise controller, no linux will support your RAID at
install or at any other time because the drivers for windows only are a
tightly kept secret.

There is another option, forget the RAID installed and use the Linux Software
RAID implementation(there is a HOWTO at linuxdoc.org), which is at least the
equal of any of the IDE fake hardware RAIDs though it does take up a little
more drive space and offers more partitions. All of the IDE RAIDs _reduce_
your drive capacity because they keep information to support the RAID on
cylinders that are destroked (no longer within drive limits for normal
operation).

If you are dual-booting windows, you can use the "hardware" RAID on board for
the windows partition and use linux software RAID for all other partitions.
(Third possible option).

Hi Becky. Hmm, AFAIK, logged in as the user whose password you want to
change,
just type in:

passwd

It will walk you through the prompts.

Hope this helps.

Re: [newbie] Star Office

2001-01-08 Thread Sevatio Octavio

Kenneth,

I just got this email. Did you find a fix for your S.O. Problem?

The initial install should have been (as root):

so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin /net

Then install it into /usr/local/office52

Now install StarOffice as yourself;

/usr/local/office52/programs/soffice

It will create a folder /home/yourname/office52 with just the necessary
files and not the whole program.

[newbie] partitions for Mandrake 7.2

2001-01-08 Thread david gentle

This is my very first post. hope it doesn't violate any of your rules.

When I try and install my 7.2 powerpack deluxe distro I get to the stage of
repartitioning my hard
disk. The software gives you a choice of three options. The manual says that if you
choose the
middle option it will automatically repartition your hard disk for Linux use (I don't
want to get
rid of windows). When I select the middle option (use free space on the windows
partition) it gives
me this error message:
Partitioning failed: The FAT resizer is unable to handle your partition, the following
error
occured: Can't locate object method "new" via package "resize_fat::main" at
/usr/bin/perl-install/install-interactive.pm line 108, <> line 6.

Whats up?
If the installation software can't repartition my hard drive then I'll have to do it
myself.
How many partitions do I need to make with diskdrake and what do I need to set the
mounting points
as?

[newbie] Mandrax 7.2 Raid installation

2001-01-08 Thread Hans E. Kristiansen

All,

I have just bought Mandrake version 7.2, but I have run into a problem. I
have a Pentium II with 2x 30 Gigabyte IDE disk drive ( RAID 1 ). The first
problem is related to the LBA issue, e.g. the two disk drives has different
geometry, which I now understand makes no difference under Linux. The other
is to actually install Mandrake on the two devices ( Raid 1 ), or just
install on hda and then to run mkraid to create the md devices.

Do I need to get another distribution, such as Red Hat ( which supports Raid
1 during installations ).

I would greatly appreciate it if someone could give me the bullet points for
how to implement RAID 1 for Mandrake, for a first time installation from the
CD-ROM.

I have been successfully running Slackware ( for years ) on another Celeron
based system, which is going to be replaced by the above system.

Thx,
Hans E.
