(EE) MGA(0): [drm] MGADRIScreenInit failed (DRM version = 1.0.0, expected

Sembra un problema di moduli, ma quali? e come risolverlo?
Comincio a pensare che sia proprio necessario passare al kernel 2.4.2

Ma puoi trovare l'rpm per Mandrake qui:

[newbie] Corrupted menu

2001-03-29 Thread Ammon Cooke

Hello,

I did a dumb thing, installed a menu support rpm that came with
CorelPHOTOPAINT9 not realizing that it was the KDE 'K' menu (StartMenu??
What is the Linux term??) . It put 4 entries in the menu for every item
that was there. I uninstalled it. It removed the items, I used menuDrake,
it put them back. How can I restore the menu?? I tried an uninstall the
menu but that meant that I would have to uninstall KDE itself.

Help, please.

worked well. The only problem is, the information is on my Linux / 95

freed up some space, but it crashed again. Hopefully someone else can
refer you to the how-to. It looks like I'm going to have wipe out 7.1 and
start over again. I'm really disappointed that the OS is that unstable as
to crash when a piece of hardware goes out. Even Windows can deal with
that. Sorry, I wish I could help.

You will find that abiword, which comes with 7.1 and 7.2 is pretty good
  too.

A 99MB download of Star Office may be too much for some computers

I dont think you want to do it this way. I believe win2k and win98 use
diffeerent mbr records. If you replace you win2k boot parition with a
win98 one, I dont think it will be very happy

to make winnt startup disk go to the hell and search for startup disk
however I have no clue how to restore your win2k mbr. From the bottem of
this mail chain and my own previious experience, you installed linux and
with win2k or winnt. Unlike windows where it will give up the mbr, winnt
and win2k dont like it. There is a howto to setup bootloader(win2k/nt
boot thingy) so that it will allow you to boot both whenever you want.
However when I first scred up (like what you did) i had to reinstall
win2k. Since I screw/format my computer almost once a week I didnt care
to much but that was the only way I could solve it

good luck

Replying to my own message here:

The workaround I found is to go into the /etc/cron.hourly and locate

Mine was installed with mandrake 7.2: inn-cron-nntpsend

I wonder why it doesn't work... Anyway, I moved it to: /etc/cron.hourly.old/

RE: [newbie] Dual Boot Trouble

2001-03-29 Thread Charles A Edwards

If you are infact using Lilo as your bootloader, the best way to remove it
especially where Win2k in conserned is to boot to linux. From the command
line, or open a terminal and su to root, then uninstall lilo with the
command /sbin/lilo -u. This not only will remove Lilo but will also restore
any boot record you had at the time lilo was installed.

Now, the box can get online (Netscape works, etc.) so I know it's connected. And as
far as the help pages from my ISP (Comcast @Home) will tell me (they only support
Outlook Express and Netscape mail), the port settings, etc. are correct. I had kmail
working once before on a now-dead box w/Mandrake 7.1 (same distro) the same ISP,

Re: [newbie] Which tool to establish ISDN connection?

2001-03-29 Thread André D. Martinsen

Hiya Hellmut,

I supose we are both in the same boat as im trying to get online with my
ISDN card too. The easy way to do this is to get yourself an external
ISDN-adapter like f.eks. Dynalink TAS400 witch is greate because it
functions with exactly the same comands as a normal modem, but with ISDN
speed.. So all you have to do is to setup a normal modem-link and it works
(with only changing the dial-comand). The hard way that im trying to do now
is to setup a proper ISDN conection with my internal ISDN-card. I found the
kISDN (that came with Mandrake) to be a greate tool its a graphical
frontend to the isdn4k tools, and I found the documentation for this program
very helpful. What my problem is for the moment is that Mandrake (or most
other distributions) don't have ISDN support in their kernel. So im trying
to configure my own kernel right now, and as for the newbie I am this is no
small task so Im making wery slow progress at this. But if you find another
way to fix this please let me know.

Andr

 Hi!

I've an ISDN connection from now on, but I don't have a clue how to
connect, except using DrakConf... isn't there a tool to connect as
 unprivileged user too?

Right away I see that you need the true mail server name from your ISP. As an example, instead of just mail for the server name, my setup uses mail.earthlink.net or previously I had pop.omah.uswest. So what ever the server name is that you used in windows or whatever should be the same. The ISP support has nothing to do with what OS you use. The server name is the only thing you appear to have misconfigured. Any questions, come on back. Dennis M.

 Pop Mail Network Error:
 Account name is OPEN
 'The server not found' error

Now, the box can get online (Netscape works, etc.) so I know it's
connected. And as far as the help pages from my ISP (Comcast @Home) will
tell me (they only support Outlook Express and Netscape mail), the port
settings, etc. are correct. I had kmail working once before on a now-dead
box w/Mandrake 7.1 (same distro) the same ISP, etc., so it CAN be done
(sadly, those settings are gone with the wind). So what might be the issue?
 Any ideas/guesses?

[newbie] 8.0 installation

2001-03-29 Thread Carl Kehley

Anyone else running into these problems? Running the installer from
the cd, I get an error "second stage ramdisk not uncompressed", hit
enter to continue. After that, I can get to the partitioning, where I
cannot get the installer to recognize the swap partition (running Win98,
Mandrake 7.2, and Red Hat 6.2), it keeps giving me an invalid argument
error, not recognizing the correct swap partition. If I make it through
this by not selecting any partitions to format, I then get an error
stating a missing basesystem file. Bad download, bad burn, hardware
conflicts?

Open to any and all suggestions.

That is good in theory, but if you read my message you would notice that I
already tried that, it just doesn't work. I also can't boot from a Win 2K

of the MBR of a Previous install.

[newbie] No screens found error - help?

Have a problem a need a little help. A friend is trying to install Linux on
his new board and everything goes swimmingly until X tries to start and then
it dies and gives a "no screens found" error.

I have tried editing fx86config manually to no avail. Has anyone got any
thoughts?

Here are the specs:
Asus CUSL2-C system board
Intel 815ep chipset.
Ati xpert2000 with Rage 128 chipset (I know this works with Mandrake, I'm
using it on my machine at this time)
256meg of Ram
15 gig Maxtor Hard drive

We've tried Mandrake 7.2, Corporate Server, 8.0 Beta 2 and nothing seems to
work. We've tried video cards that I've used in Linux before but none of them
seem to work. I know you will need more information, I'm just not sure what
is needed for sure.

There are no IRQ conflicts and we've tried installing with nothing but the
video card, disabled all the com ports and usb stuff, and still nothing. We
got the information for the monitor and entered it by hand and made sure we
had the right driver selected. I'm stumped. Any help would be greatly
appreciated.

[newbie] Installing RealPlayer8.bin file -- Instructions

2001-03-29 Thread Benjamin Sher

Dear friends:

You can get RealPlayer 8 from RealPlayer home page at
http://www.real.com by selecting the free RealPlayer 8 Basic and then
choosing under OS "Unix". This will take you directly to the Unix
Community Supported RealPlayer page at:

http://huxley.real.com/real/player/unix/unix.html?src=rpbform

You have a choice of downloading two files for Linux: a RealPlayer8.rpm
and the other file, which is a RealPlayer8.bin file. Due to the problem
with "a different architecture", the rpm file will NOT install. It has
been strongly advised by our gurus NOT to try to install it either by
forcing it (--force) or by using the --ignorearch option. INSTEAD, do
what I just did, thanks to a message from Wolfgang and from Tom
Brinkman:

First uninstall RealPlayer 7 by typing the command as root:

#rpm -e RealPlayer

Now install the RealPlayer8.bin file (around 5.8 meg) as ROOT. Then, as
root, continue your installation and install the plugins and mimetypes.
This is part of the installation as root. Just follow instructions until
you have installed it fully as root. Then, as USER, go to the directory
it has installed itself in, namely,

/usr/local/RealPlayer8

and type:

$/usr/local/RealPlayer8sh mimetypes.sh

and

$/usr/local/RealPlayer8sh plugins.sh

This will give you the plugins and mimetypes as user.

Now, all that's left is to make it more convenient to launch RealPlayer8
as a desktop icon.

Create the icon, then in Properties, Execute type:

kstart /usr/local/RealPlayer8/./realplay

If you don't add "kstart" you won't be able to launch RealPlayer
automatically from the icon.

So, add the "kstart ..." and it's done. That's it.

I am going to send this to the Newbie list. Hopefully, this will help
other newbies.

My thanks again to everyone who helped.

seconds, turn your system back on. This should reinitialize your modem
and you should be online. If not, contact your Internet Provider.
