Mica tanto... diversi programmi hanno bisogno di sistematine per essere

fatto gli rpm per il gcc 3.0.
Ricompilare un compilatore è un'impresa, compilare il kernel al

[newbie-it] Problemi con KDE e update in linea

2001-07-25 Thread Leonardo Orazi

corposa ).

Secondo suggerimento: Non proporre l'idea windows in questa ML (è mattina

;-D

If you don't know what it is, then you don't need it. Go to Software

 Sridhar (or anyone else),

I have one concern and two questions. As you know, postfix is the MTA
(Mail Transport Agent). IIRC, when I had postfix disabled, I did not
receive the various email messages that Linux may send to root
(warnings, cron job failures, etc.) (well at least as AFAIK, but I may
not have looked). (When logging in at a console, I never received any
of those You have mail messages.)

 1. Will those messages get delivered to root even if postfix is not
 running?

 2. If not, are they filling some queue somewhere that one should look
 for, review, and periodically empty?

 Thanks,
 Randy Kramer

Postfix is required to deliver the messages. Without it, the system will
recognise that there is nothing to deliver the massages and so will not do
anything. It will, however, print a message to the screen (tty12). I
recommended that Robert uninstall postfix because he obviously doesn't know
what it is, and so it wouldn't be of any use to him. It it was installed, and
he didn't check his mail, the messages would just pile up and steal hard
drive space.

Re: [newbie] Mozilla (was Best browser for linux?)

2001-07-25 Thread Paul

Netscape is also programmed in a sloppy way. It is famous for its memory
  leaks.

This is the case with Netscape 4.x. Netscape 6 is bad because it is based on
an early version of Mozilla (Milestone 18, released late last year). As I
mentioned before, Netscape 6.x is simply Mozilla code with extras bolted on.
There is nothing new or innovative about it. AOL decided to use the latest
version of Mozilla at the time, M18, for Netscape 6 instead of waiting until
Mozilla was complete (which wasn't such a bad idea because Mozilla _still_
isn't finished now). Netscape 6.1, is based on Mozilla 0.9. The Mozilla code
is not forked in any major way (which would be harmful). All that happens is
that from time to time Netscape will take the most recent Mozilla release and
 add some junk on top.

I noticed that the Mozilla with MDK8 is pretty good. So far NS4.x was the
only browser in Linux with which I could do my internet banking. Mozilla
works too, I tried that last night and there was no problem whatsoever. Even
better: the fonts on Mozilla seem more legible with the internet banking site
than in NS.
So I will be working with Opera and Mozilla for now :) Mozilla also loads
faster than NS it seems.

[newbie] newbie and hardware questions

2001-07-25 Thread Robert MacLean

Good Morning Bunnies ;)

Okay I got Mandrake installed and all seems well, played around a bit
and I got some more questions. BTW If any of this stuff is in a manual
that comes with Mandrake, I'm very happy to just accept page numbers.
Firstly and most worrying is my modem doesn't work under Linux. Under
HardDrake it tells me it is a CONEXANT Modem Emulator, and then says
it can't use Winmodems (and gives a link to a page that doesn't
exist). Here the weird thing, my modem is a CNET modem
(http://www.cnet.com.tw/product/cn5614rc.html), and there was no
mention anywhere that it is a Winmodem so I doubt that is it, maybe I
just got scammed?
My next one is also hardware. I have a Genius Netscroll Optical mouse.
But for some reason I can't select it, when I tried it during install
it stuffed the mouse up. So I choose std mouse. Any way to fix this? I
miss my mouse wheel :(
My last hard ware question is it possible for my machine to switch it
self off when I shut down? I used to do this in windows (not that I
shut my machine down that often, because it usually crashed before
then), it just made life that much sweeter.

Next questions will probably seem really basic, so here goes using
GNOME, how do I change/delete/add desktop icons?
Is there a way I can setup Linux to automatically start the CD Player
software, and start playing the CD when an Audio CD is inserted?
My computers name is localhost.localdomain? How/Where do I change
this?

Also Many Thanx for you time with my last email, it helped a lot :)

Here's a quote from the link you gave:

These models include controller-less modems and internal software modems.

This is a fancy way to call it a winmodem. No manufacturer actually uses the
term winmodem; this is a term used primarily by non-Windos users, often as
a way of deriding them. Try these sites for possible solutions:

http://linmodems.org/
http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html

My next one is also hardware. I have a Genius Netscroll Optical mouse.
But for some reason I can't select it, when I tried it during install
it stuffed the mouse up. So I choose std mouse. Any way to fix this? I
 miss my mouse wheel :(

Run mousedrake as root.

My last hard ware question is it possible for my machine to switch it
self off when I shut down? I used to do this in windows (not that I
shut my machine down that often, because it usually crashed before
then), it just made life that much sweeter.

If it does this in Windos, it should in GNU/Linux as well. My machine can do
this in both OSs.

Next questions will probably seem really basic, so here goes using
GNOME, how do I change/delete/add desktop icons?

Right-click the desktop and select New - Launcher. You can also add .desktop
links or symbolic links to your /home/user/.gnome-desktop directory.

Is there a way I can setup Linux to automatically start the CD Player
software, and start playing the CD when an Audio CD is inserted?

I'm not too sure on this one. It should be possible if you add the CD Player
applet to a panel.

My computers name is localhost.localdomain? How/Where do I change
 this?

Computers are a bit like people. When someone wants to call you, they'll say
Robert (or maybe a nickname). When you wish to refer to yourself, you
wouldn't refer to yourself in the third person (unless you're weird). Most
people would use a personal pronoun, like I, when referring to themselves.
With networked computers, things are similar. When your computer refers to
itself, it uses localhost.localdomain (the full local name), or just
localhost (a 'nickname'). This must not be changed. However, the external
host name can be changed. Try typing hostname in a terminal. The resulting
optput is what other computers on a network will call your computer in order
to communicate with it.

Also Many Thanx for you time with my last email, it helped a lot :)

A

Try
going into the BIOS and cranking UP things like the refresh periods, etc. Turn

I have heard of it too, even though I don't do winders. It is a bad one,
 indeed.
You would not have to worry if you are not running a mailserver for other
people. Otherwise you should install an antivirus program. They do exist,
because many winders mail clients pull mail from *nix boxes. If the server
can eliminate a viral mail, it will reduce the amount of spreading through
 the winders pc's.
You can consider Amavis, McAfee, AvP/Linux
 Paul

Most GNU/Linux antivirus apps are designed to find Windos virii, not
GNU/Linux ones. This can be useful if you're running a GNU/Linux server and
Windos clients.

I know that there is a version of AntiViral Toolkit Pro that claims to be
able to find GNU/Linux virii. I would argue that it is mostly unnecessary,
and that the bulk of its advertising is based on FUD. The vast majority (and
perhaps all) of GNU/Linux virii are designed to exploit well-known security
holes for which there has long been a fix. If you keep your system up to date
with the latest security packages (Mandrake does a good job of releasing
these), you should have little to fear.

In the Windos world, many of the most successful and most devastating virii

Chernobyl (a CIH virus) would have to be favourite. It can render a Windos

You should have 3 listed.
Your CD-RW is listed twice.
As /dev/hdc so that it may be used to read as a
normal CD-Rom.
And as /dev/scd0 so that it may be used as a burner.

RPMDrake will call for the cd to be inserted into the
first drive on the chain.
With the Primary Master as the 1st possible entry and Secondary
Slave as the last.
If you you wish for it to use your CD-Rom your CD-Rom must be connected
in the chain prior to your CD-RW.

VMware Express is not worth getting. It is basically VMware Workstation cut
down to a level comparable to Win4Lin, both price and feature wise. Like
Win4Lin, it can only run Win95/98 and only one at a time (VMware Workstation
can handle a number of different OSs and can even have several open at once).
Unlike VMware Workstation, VMware Express doesn't allow you to use a
pre-existing Windows partition. Instead, you must install Windos into a
virtual partition in a file, slowing things down. In contrast, Win4Lin lets
you install Windos _directly_ onto your GNU/Linux partition (this is the only
way you can install), so you can benefit from the superior speed of
filesystems (in comparison to FAT) like Ext2 and ReiserFS.

A quick check of the VMware site shows that VMware Express costs $US49.95,
which is cheaper than Win4Lin's $US79.99. In comparison, VMware Workstation
costs $US299. If I had the choice between VMware Express and Win4Lin, I would
pick Win4Lin, despite its higher price. It has been said that it is as fast
or even faster than running Windos natively.

There is also Connectix Virtual PC
(http://www.connectix.com/products/vpc4w.html), but I know very little about
this product.

Well, I did as you had suggested, and it turns out that it does work using

[newbie]: kmail 1.2 address book - printing

2001-07-25 Thread Alan Smith

Hi All

Have set address book at Traditional kmail interface with KAB database -
the idea of having some sort of data base appealed.

Can I access this data base, reorganise if necessary and print out in A5 (1/2
letter sized page) so that I have a hard copy.

Put another way - which address book format can I use that I can easily
convert into a hard copy. Which programme would I need to run to interpret
the address book data base and have the facility of doing a proper layout for
printing.

[newbie] LILO problem

2001-07-25 Thread Brian Meadows

Hi all,

Been persuaded by the release of Kylix (Delphi for Linux) to take
a look at Linux, but I'm running into a problem with
multi-booting Mandrake 8.0 and Windows.

The system is a Dell PIII/600, 512 MB RAM, AMI BIOS, with a
single H-P CD-RW hanging off the motherboard controller, and all
of the drive space hanging off a Promise ATA/66 card. The first
two drives are my Windows 2000 Pro. setup, and I was intending to
use the third drive for Linux.

I go through the setup, everything installs just fine, and the
setup routines tells me that my system will be rebooted. It finds
the Promise controller and all the drives, but then all I get is
a blank screen except for the two characters 'LI' at the top left
of the screen - presumably this is part of the LILO prompt.

The system hangs at that point, and I have to boot off my Win 2K
Pro CD and overwrite the MBR in order to get Windows back again.

Anyone got any ideas what's going wrong? Make no assumptions, I'm
a total novice at Linux.

Thanks,

Brian.

Re: [newbie] Netscape 6.1 java

2001-07-25 Thread Sridhar Dhanapalan

Firstly, I _strongly_ suggest that you use Mozilla instead of Netscape 6.x.
Netscape 6.1 is Mozilla 0.9 with some advertising courtesy of AOL (who own
Netscape). Mozilla is currently at version 0.9.2, which is faster and less
buggy than Netscape 6.x (and probably always will be).

Installing Java requires root privileges. Run Netscape/Mozilla as root,
install Java, close it, and reopen it as an ordinary user. This is probably
the only time you should ever run Netscape/Mozilla as root (it is a security
risk).

Close, but not quite :-)

In 1998, Netscape released the alpha-level code for their version 5
Communicator suite as open source. The Mozilla Project was formed to turn
this into a functional product that Netscape could use with minimal
alteration. After about a year of trying to comprehend and work on this code,
the Mozilla developers deemed it more prudent to start afresh. This is a
major reason why Mozilla has taken so long to take shape. Other reasons
include its aims of being cross-platform and of becoming an entire platform,
not just a browser suite (e.g. there are office suites being made to work
inside Mozilla).

Netscape, as they originally planned, are using Mozilla as their base for
their Netscape 6 product. Only very minor alterations have been made, with
the addition of extra advertising and sidebar content.

In fact Mozilla is one of the grandaddys of web browsers

 Nope; that was Mosaic.

That is correct. Marc Andressen (a Netscape Communications founder) was one
of the leaders of Mosaic's development. Both IE (all versions) and Netscape
Navigator (up to version 4.x) are based on this code. Netscape 6 is the first
browser from the browser wars competitors (namely, M$ and Netscape) that
does _not_ contain any Mosaic code.

[newbie] cannot re-edit XF86Config-4

I had a problem with the X font server (Mandrake 8.0)starting so I took
someone's advice (not on this list) to change the port for xfs from "unix/:-1"
to port "7100". I changed this in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and in
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs. It didn't work. I opened the files from the command line
with vim and tried to put them back the way they were but I cannot write changes
to the file. I get error messages like "write error in swap file" and "write
error (system full?)" During shutdown I get the message "segmentation fault in
/etc/rc.d/init.d/xfs". Can someone tell me how I can re-edit these files (If
possible) and what to do to fix the original problem, that suddenly xfs will not
start? The original error message was something like "default font fixed". I
tried commenting out "FontPath uix/:-1" in /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and x started,
but then I couldn't connect to the internet because of the font I was running.
This has been a problem with two differnt
installations.ThanksSW

You would not have to worry if you are not running a mailserver for other

because many winders mail clients pull mail from *nix boxes. If the server
can eliminate a viral mail, it will reduce the amount of spreading through

because his kids started playing with it and messed somthing

 1. I set up a username KIDS along with a few others.
 2. I had the KIDS username set up as the default user so mandrake boots
 automatically into it.
 3. I installed all the games I could find on the install and the extension
 disk.
 4. I deleted all the icons from the desktop and had the taskbar autohide.
 5. Created icons to all the games on the 1 desktop I had showing.
 6. Edited the K menu to show very few options (log off and a few others)

The final result is that his 4 year old kid (or his wife...she likes the

Well, tiny firewall can block ports for you, and it would be wise to watch

and to subscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] so you get email
when new fixes are available. We generally manage to stay 3-6 months
ahead of the worm/trojan makers with fixes for the exploits they use, but if you
don't update, you can become a victim.

But don't worry very much about viruses. They are an academic speculation
for linux. A really effective virus is theoretically possible on a machine
that does compilation, by sitting in memory and watching for a make and streaming in
its code, but direct pollution of executables is another matter, not very easily done.
