Re: [newbie] suid icon on desktop
Ok, so if I setup a shell script: #!/bin/sh adsl-stop && adsl-start i can set it up to run with kdesu. What program does running MandrakeUpdate invoke when you open it as user? Re: [newbie] Postfix / Fetchmail problems solved!
Hi! So that others may not have to go through the same silliness that I brought upon myself, here is a recap and a solution: setup: I'm running Mandrake 8.0. Tried to get fetchmail to fetch pop3. I have a mailbox and it appeared to be set up properly (after advice from David Fox). background: I've posted before about this problem and then gave up for a day. Earlier Mark (Dark Matter) had astutely asked me how I got mail via Mozilla to work. I recalled the settings incorrectly (stupid me!). Tonight I reviewed my situation. My pop3 server name is mail and NOT mail.home.com. Settings/configuration: My .fetchmailrc file is as follows: set bouncemail set no spambounce set properties "" poll mail protocol POP3 user 'femail.bc.wave.home.com' there with password '' is zorba here options fetchall outcome upon launch: SENDING MAIL WORKED! THE KEY was thinking about what Mark had said. I put in the "mail" (which is the name of my mail server on the @Home system) above. I got an error message that included something I'd seen in my e-mail headers before: authorization failure: [EMAIL PROTECTED]@femail.bc.wave.home.com So I then realized that the "femail.bc.wave.home.com" is what I've seen in my own headers, so likely that is what I ought to be using instead of @home.com. I made the changes to make the .fecthmailrc as it is above, and Bob was my cousin, er, uncle. THANKS EVERYONE! Cheers! -warren Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? If you don't want to see certain activity in the reports, look at logcheck.ignore. Anything specified in that file will be ignored by logcheck. For example, "ipop3d.*Moved" will ignore entries like this from maillog: Sep 22 21:28:06 yoda ipop3d[2967]: Moved 7395 bytes of new mail to /home/ed/mbox from /var/spool/mail/ed host= eds.wrenkasky.com [10.10.10.11] If you have trouble, send me one of the messages from the log file. Mysterious Behavior (Was RE: [newbie] Need a cheap non-Winmodem)
I've tried everything on it already, tried different drivers out of desperationutter desperation. BTW, I borrowed a Hayes Accura Faxmodem from my brother and got it to work a couple of times. Now, when kudzu tries to probe COM2, my box reboots! I tried turning it on once I entered linuxconf and the system hangs once I start a ppp session. Everything freezes. NOW, I removed the modem and use COM2 for my mouse, kudzu can't find the mouse. I have Windoze on a slave drive and it also can't find the mouse now. It also reboots once it probes COM2 on startup. Other times it says: Windows Protection Error...restart your system. What the hell is that? Everything started when I used the Accura on a ppp session. COM2 is busted and COM1 is starting to go on a fritz! I just bought this ASUS last year! :) I can't explain it. I found a bunch the other day and really wanted to add one to a new high-end system I'm building. You might see the file 'boot.0300' in /etc/lilo or in /boot - in any case, it's the boot record for the 03,00 device (i.e. /dev/hda). David E. RE: [newbie] Cannot get into Linux
I dont recognize the error, but I would guess you have a process hung. I would first log in to gnome and see if you get the same error there (that would tell you if it is a kde problem) I would second try another browser to see if it is a netscape specific problem. Third, use the top command to see if there is a netscape process running that needs to be shut down. If they are use the kill command to exit them. Fourth, create a new user, and see if the netscape problem occurs on other users. Hope that helps. [newbie] PPP on PPC on 8.0
PPP on my Mandrake 8.0 installation is behaving oddly. (Installed on a '99 iMac DV SE.) If I go to the Mandrake control centre and launch ppp, it connects once, then hangs up, then tries to connect again, and can't because the modem is still locked by another process, then tries a third time and finally succeeds. I can connect to remote web sites, so the connection seems to be fully functional. As far as I can tell from /var/log/daemons/info, all this is being run by ifup-ppp, which is a script. I can't read scripts very well. Nor can I figure out how to run this from anywhere but the control centre, which has to be logged in as root. Any help gratefully received. I have picked up some mount errors during boot up. I was planning on simply editing out the offending lines: "none /dev/pts devpts mode=0620 0 0" "none /proc proc defaults 0 0" "none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0" These errors cropped up after doing some Security/Cooker updates with Software Manager. Then boot from that floppy and install in expert mode. When you get to package selection, at the bottom of the box is a little symbol that looks vaguely like recycling. Click it for an alphabetized list and scroll down to find kernel22-2.2.19 and check the box for installation. Proceed to the bootloader step and there you want to click on "Add" select vmlinuz-2.2.19-10mdk from the drop down for your boot kernel Now you will have no trouble at all with the mouse. If instead you go to a cooker iso site and download MandrakeFreq, it will work also.. This is a case where fixing one bug broke something else. PENA FAMILY wrote: > On a side note I really wish someone would get a driver working for > winmodems. I don't really want to spend the money on an external one since > this one works just fine. Oh well keeping the faith going. Just as a reminder, not all internal modems are winmodems. I prefer an internal modem for reasons of convenience (modem inside the computer, no wall wart, less cabling, etc.) and cost. A friend of mine recently bought a "white box" external modem for $50 (while she was visiting relatives in Phoenix). I helped hook it up for her (as part of an "install fest"), and somebody else completed the Linux installation. Worked first time and ever since with no problems. I haven't bought a modem in a while, but based on the above and on recent browsing at computer shows, I would expect to pay: * $10 to $25 for a winmodem * $35 to $50 for an internal "real" modem * $50 and up for an external modem (not USB) Aside: Don't choose the modem based on these prices -- for example, a vendor will be happy to sell you a winmodem in the $35 to $50 price range -- that doesn't make it a real modem. Look for a warranty and the address / telephone number of the manufacturer. Last time I bought a modem, almost everyone was offering a five year warranty. Buy from a vendor within driving distance, know his return, refund, and warranty policies, and keep the receipt with his legible phone number and addresss. (Many vendors will accept defective merchandise for a period of up to 30 days, saving you the hassle of dealing with a manufacturers warranty, but policies differ so you need to ask -- likewise on non-defective return / refund policies.) I've bought a lot of stuff at computer shows, I've had problems with less than 2% of it, and always got the problem resolved, even though twice I had to drive to a vendor's place of business. (Most problems were resolved over the phone or by exchange of parts by mail.) I've tried to stick with vendors in Philadelphia, New Jersey, or New York city, 50 to 80 miles away, just in case. The purchase that was my worst experience at a computer show was a Hewlett Packard inkjet printer which died a few months after the warranty expired. I expect equipment I buy to work for much longer than the warranty period -- 3 to 20 times the length of the warranty. there are drivers that take a "little" work on your part...see www.linmodems.org On Saturday 22 September 2001 09:05, you wrote: > I managed to answer my own question. Re: [newbie] Hardware help
I managed to answer my own question. The problem is that for whatever reason WindowsME and Linux couldn't see the old drive. I looked it over and made sure the jumper settings were correct. I kept at it until BAMM! Linux and Windows saw it. On a side note I really wish someone would get a driver working for winmodems. I don't really want to spend the money on an external one since this one works just fine. Oh well keeping the faith going. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Re: [newbie] Hardware help
jumper settings are even more specific than that, they are specific to that model and serial number dreive. however, if the question was "do most all ide drives have a setting for master and slave or cable select" I can say from experiance that all but the oldest ide drives do, and the older ones just do not have cable select as a setting. is the BIOS set to regognize the drive? or is this an scsi drive? [newbie] Hardware help
Just finished building my Linux box a few days ago. I took an old 4Gb Quantum Fireball which suddenly Linux doesn't recognize and keeps asking me for SCSI drivers and gives me a list to pick from. Nevertheless, I just want to turn this 4Gig drive as extension for raw data such as photos and music. I have manuals with jumper settings for another harddrive, but I wanted to ask if anyone knew if jumper settings are standard among all harddrive makers or specific to each manufacturer. Thanks in advance. Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

I always get the src.rpm for an app like this. After fulfilling a few deps, I got pan-0.10.0 installed, working and used it quite a bit. Then I upgraded kdenetwork to 2.2.1 which fixes the date errors since 9/13 in Knode. Immediately bugs started showing up, to the point pan became unusable, ie, newsgroups no longer were displayed by their name, just a bunch of jibberish, mostly numbers. I --force'd pan-0.9.6-2mdk back in and now all is well again. So, at least for me, installing 8.1 is gonna be the way to get pan upgraded ;> -- Tom Brinkman Galveston Bay, USA Admiral Yamamoto: "I fear that all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant, and filled him with a terrible resolve." it is a measurement of the IDLED (as in not running, sitting still) CPU for the reading of AdvancedPowerMangagment. and is not an illusion, it is required for Mandrake8.0+ On Saturday 22 September 2001 01:19, you wrote: > On Fri, 21 Sep 2001, s wrote: > > On Friday 21 September 2001 10:46 pm, Manuel Drake wrote: > > > What the heck is this and why is it always sucking so much of my CPU? > > > > Please do a search, this has been discussed to death on all the forums. > > Ok, read up... [newbie] cd burning help
Gr. After reading the cd-burning howto's (which were a bit general and generally unhelpful) I have burned a few more coasters. I have used gtoaster and xcdroast and all runs perfectly until the very end. When I put the cd into a reading device, thereis no data but the cd has been fixed! What on earth is going on. These programs are popular so I am assuming someone has got them working. How is it meant to go? any help will be appreciated Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Comments? You know that the ones in cooker are built for 8.1 and its libraries. The ones at kde.org will be built for 7.2 and 8.0, at least two weeks from now. [newbie] newbie] Any Linux Software To Burn audio cds from mp3s? & a gcombust problem
how about it.. now i have a burner im trying to burn cds to listen to my mp3s in the car etc.. i have tried gcombust but i get a cd full of white noise when i try? do i need to convert them to wav files first for combust to work? what do other people use? and while i can burn cds when logged in as root, i get the errors in the mkisofs window "warning-contractions.c 254: popen_r_err_in:execl() returned(mkiosfs)" and in the cdrcord window "warning-contractions.c 227: popen_r_err_in:execl() returned(cdrecord)" is this a permissions problem (cos it works under root) and if so where/on what files could i change the permissions to get it going on?
