In my case, using an 8 port hub, I have 5 system using DHCP through a Win98 system. When using this type of configuration you DO NEED a firewall on each connected system. Blocking all internet traffic on the Host system will not prevent access to or by the systems connected to it. Think of your DSL modem as an entrnaceway. In this entranceway you have 4 doors. Even if you lock the P133 door, entrance can still be gained through the other 3 doors unless they also are locked. Personally on my systems on those running Windows, either full are parttime, I use either ZoneAlarm or Sygate and in Linux Tiny FireWall. Charles Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? [newbie] problem with netconfig for ppp on LM8.0
Greetings, I installed LM8.0 on a computer at work and ran into a problem. During installation i configured a dialup (ppp0) account to our ISP using a 3com external modem on ttys0 After rebooting and loading into linux for the first time i made sure that the dialup account worked by logging in as root and running /sbin/ifup ppp0. This part went fine. I made a few backups (thank god!) and went into netconf to change ppp0 so that it could be controlled by any user. This was the only change made and netconf did not report any errors but now when anyone, root or a regular user, tries to run /sbin/ifup ppp0 the pppd daemon exits with either error #6 unable to lock the serial port, error #8 connection script failed, or error #17 which is serial loopback detection. The most common is error #17. The other 2 show up about 1 time in 10. After tring /sbin/ifup ppp0 about 100 times and double checking everything over and over again I finally gave up for the day and went back into netconf and changed it so that regular users could not control the device. Then went back and tried /sbin/ifup ppp0 and it started exiting with the same errors. Being totally frustrated i restored the backup i had made of /etc and then tried /sbin/ifup ppp0. It worked flawlessly. I then went home and ate turkey, mashed potatoes with gravy and washed it all down with a few cold ones while watching football. Man what a way to alleviate stress. :) Came back in this morning and performed a format and complete reinstall only to run through the same problems all over again. Anyone have any ideas on what is wrong and how to fix it? On another note, I was considering installing LM8.1 but has read somewhere on this list previously that Mandrake had broken the automount. Is there a patch out yet that corrects this? Thanks in advance, Ian K. Harrell [EMAIL PROTECTED] Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com

Re: [newbie] Internet access setup questions
David, 1. You might want to ask this on the expert list. 2. My home network is very similar to yours, coax instead of hub, dial up instead of DSL, and a Dos box running IPROUTE instead of Windows with ICS. I don't know exactly what ICS does, but IPROUTE ($50 shareware from, darn, can't remember his name -- I can post a link if anyone is interested) is a NAT type system. I run it without a firewall and it seems to be very secure -- whenever I check it at one of those "port scanner" sites it comes back saying it can't find any ports or they are all stealth. So, if Windows ICS is a NAT type thingy, a firewall might not be required. (Of course, without knowing for sure, one might say a firewall can't hurt.) IIUC, a NAT type system is very resistant to external attacks. When one of your local computers goes out to a web site, the NAT device keeps track of the IP you are trying to get to, and only allows stuff from that IP back into your network. (It also keeps track of which of your local computers asked for that information, so it is sent back to the correct local computer.) I understand I might have some difficulty if I tried to run a VPN throught the NAT device, and we have had trouble with games -- computers on my network cannot easily serve as servers for Internet games, but can connect to other servers to play games. Try one of those port scanning sites -- one is: http://www.mycgiserver.com/servlet/kalish.Security Randy Kramer David wrote: > > Hello everyone. > > Okay, I realize this is a drawn out post so I'll apolgize now. [newbie] lm8.1 won't boot up properly after adding new partition.
Hi all! I dual boot win98 + Mandrake 8.1 Questions: What would it take to solve this problem? Would reinstalling lm8.1 be quicker and easier? The situation seems pretty bad and a search on google makes me even more confused as to what could be the solution. Problem: KDE or any other window manager won't start anymore. The graphic login only has two options: previous and failsafe, neither of which get anything started. There are quite a few error messages that appear during the machine booting sequence. I recently added a new FAT32 partition using diskdrake and then formated it under win98. I needed the new partitions so that I could install office2000. (I unfortunately still need that because of the lacking chinese support under linux - I still haven't been able to get it working properly - I am told that sylpheed will allow me to ditch outlook express... ypeee! :-D ). Gidday Anguo You couldn't download one of those linux on a floppy distro's and boot from that could you? (Tomsboot?) I'm only guessing here. Then you could make the changes you need to and reboot. Re: [newbie] booting in console mode and seeing booting logs to diagnose problem
Hi all! I have been looking in the archives for the answer to the first question below, but so far, I haven't found the solution. I am sure that the answer is simple. Do you know it? I dual boot win98 + Mandrake 8.1 Questions: 1- How can I use the boot disk to boot into the console mode rather than the graphical login? 2- Where can I then see the logs of the booting sequences. Problem: KDE or any other window manager won't start anymore. The graphic login only has two options: previous and failsafe, neither of which get anything started. There are quite a few error messages that appear during the machine booting sequence. I'd like to see what they are so that I can solve (with your precious help) whatever problem there is. I recently added a new FAT32 partition using diskdrake and then formated it under win98. I needed the new partitions so that I could install office2000. (I unfortunately still need that because of the lacking chinese support under linux - I still haven't been able to get it working properly). I think part of the problem is related to this (something about too many partitions being mounted...). I'll be able to provide more details about the real problem once I get the answer to the two questions above... Thanks for your help, Anguo Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? I downloaded the RPMs for 8.1 from the MandrakeUser site and followed the instructions that were there. I seem to have been successful because Gnome is working just like normal. Now I would like to do something that makes use of the 3D capabilities of the Nvidia drivers but when I go to the Mesa and OpenGL demos in the toys section of the amusements menu they don't appear to be working. OpenGL demos open a Window but it appears to include my desktop and it never does anything else, the Mesa demos don't seem to even launch. I click but nothing visible happens and I can't find a process for them in gtop. Is there something I need to do to activate 3D support other than successfully installing the Nvidia kernel and glx? The instructions said that I just needed to run XFdrake and choose my resolution after rpming the drivers. I did that. The instructions said that I didn't need to edit anything since I was using 8.1, but, I either don't understand what should be happening or I'm don't know how to invoke what should be happening. Any assistance would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks. Traci Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] opengl not supported
I am running LM8.0 with a motherboard that has the sis620 chipset. The video driver is xfree86-3.3.6 experimental 3D. It did not want to work with xfree86-4.0.6 There is supposed to be another driver but everytime I look for it I find only dead links. I seem to have the latest glibc files installed as well as all 5 libSDL1.1 files. When I try to run xtraceroute I get 'opengl not supported' even though I have all the files. I downloaded the libSDL1.2 files but cannot seem to install them due to some cryptic dependancys. Anybody else gone down this path before? Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? RE: [newbie] NVidia Drivers
Eh, actually there is a BIG need to perform a cold boot. I went into the specifics of this in prior postings, but the Nvidia chips must be re-inited completely as the NV drivers cannot handle the state the chipset was left in by XFree86's drivers. In addition the Nvidia modules get aliased by /etc/modules.conf at boot so they are properly loaded at invocation... -JMS |-Original Message- |From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Robert MacLean |Sent: Thursday, November 22, 2001 9:32 AM |To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; [EMAIL PROTECTED] |Subject: Re: [newbie] NVidia Drivers | | |there is no need to reboot. | |when you are at the command prompt, edit the config file |and type startx. | |it will then attempt to load x. if it fails it will kick you |back to the console. otherwise it will work | |___ |Robert MacLean |- Original Message - |From: "David .." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> |To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> |Sent: Thursday, November 22, 2001 4:31 PM |Subject: Re: [newbie] NVidia Drivers | | |> |> Yes edit the XF86Config-4 before you reboot with the changes needed |for the |> video drivers. |> |> >From: R & C <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> |> >Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |> >To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |> >Subject: Re: [newbie] NVidia Drivers |> >Date: Thu, 22 Nov 2001 01:38:38 -0500 |> > |> >Ok, I appreciate all your help. |> > |> >I understand why I shouldn't use Software Manager for this |particular |> >installation. Re: [newbie] booting in console mode and seeing booting logs to diagnose problem
Ouch! I just saw this: http://www.linux.com/howto/LILO-crash-rescue-HOWTO-1.html#ss1.4 "You MUST make emergency boot disk from time to time and whenever you make changes to the partition. Insert a blank floppy" which, of course, I didn't do... so the partition table on the boot floppy doens't correspond to the existing one. There isn't much change though.. just one more partition cut out of the empty remaining space on the hard disk... What now? - Original Message - ±H¥óªÌ: Anguo I dual boot win98 + Mandrake 8.1 Questions: 1- How can I use the boot disk to boot into the console mode rather than the graphical login? Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
Re: [newbie] Importing Fonts
The import fonts utility does hang sometimes - it usually means there are some weird fonts in Windows. I've never known it affect any programs, though. The only thing I can think of is that you have imported a font with the same name but different properties over one of your X-fonts, though this seems unlikely. All I can suggest is 1. Uninstall any fonts that were successfully imported. 2. Move any Windows fonts that were installed later into a temporary directory. Repeat font import. 3. Try any of the moved fonts that you really want, one at a time. 4. Move Windows fonts back. A tedious alternative is to convert Windows fonts to type 2 fonts. On Friday 23 November 2001 08:58, Robert MacLean wrote: > i'm not sure. where do i check what directory it's installing to? do i > have to specify it? Well No. The makefile will automatically determine what directories it goes in. The point I was trying to make (inarticulately) was that if you compile in a windows partions the permissions and ownership bits of the files created are not available to the system, which *might* be an issue. It's one less thing to worry about if you do your compiling in a regular linux partition. > how did you get counter-strike working? could you send me your wine > config file? > thats what i am trying to actually get running. thanx Well it took a while. There is a good site at http://lhl.linuxgames.com/ There is a good HOWTO there. The secret for me was to not use the wine supplied by Mandrake, nor to use ANY of the packaged versions you see around including source tar.gz's (I tried 3 none of them worked) Go to the CVS and compile from there. Instructions on how to do that are in the howto and on the winehq site. They (strongly) recommend installing Half-Life/Counterstrike in a Linux partion and doing the game install under wine. But I actually managed to persuade it to use the existing windows installation. Finally working out how to invoke Counterstrike was a challenge. I have to cd to the Half life directory and then issue a command wine -- hl.exe -console -game=cstrike The game window starts in 640x480 and when you have selected a game it switches to whatever resolution you have defined. You then have to change the resolution of your X display with Ctl and 'plus' key Another 'funny' is the game will not start until you have clicked out of the window with the mouse, and the server dialogue will not start until you click on the 'done' key in the setup window which still lingers in the corner of the screen. Once the game is running, it is great. The only issue I had was lag on the sound, but there is a fix for that in the HOWTO. I'll send my config to you separately. RE: [newbie] office 2000 shares
Yes you can do this. Although why you'd want to is another matter. First the problems. Since Winblows constantly goes to different modules, doing this puts a lot of traffic on your network. Office is a big (and bloated) application in itself, compounding the problem. For 3-6 users this may work fine on a 100BaseT network, but beyond that, you are asking for trouble. That said You'll need to copy the ENTIRE Office CD(both CD's if you also want frontpage) to a directory, then "root" share that directory via Samba, publically. Also it must be browseable. It need not be RW, RO will suffice. Each workstation then performs an installation from the Samba share. During the install you are asked if you want to "run from CD". You select this. The installer will remember the path to the Samba share and add in the appropriate registry entries based upon this. A few files will get copied to the local Winblows directories however, so local disk space is still a must. That's it, other than setting up Samba itself. -JMS |-Original Message- |From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Frank McKenna |Sent: Thursday, November 22, 2001 9:23 AM |To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |Subject: Re: [newbie] office 2000 shares | | |I would like to try to share the application itself across the |LAN as opposed to just files and documents. | |Thanks in advance | |Frank McKenna | |Difficulties increase the closer we approach our Goals | |Plato ~ "It takes a minute to have a crush on |someone,an hour to like someone and a day to love |someonebut it takes a lifetime to forget someone." | |- Original Message - |From: "Anuerin G. Re: [newbie] Internet access setup questions
i would consider all your macines to be at risk without a firewall on the 'ics' box, i would recommend what i use in a similar setup which is mandrake single network firewall (snf) but i admit i'm used to cable modems which are simple ethernet setups, i don't know about dsl modems so i can't say for sure that it is easy to setup, there are limitations to snf, netmeeting on windows for onething has problems since it uses dynamically assigned ports, there are other firewalls like 'smoothwall', and of course there must be windows products, there is no point relying on zonealarm on individual boxes when you have a local gateway that could do the job better, plus you could then set up sharing between boxes on the lan without exposing yourself to the net, right now if you allowed windows sharing between boxes you expose yourself beyond your network this is of course, just mho bascule On Friday 23 Nov 2001 3:33 am, you wrote: > Hello everyone. > > Okay, I realize this is a drawn out post so I'll apolgize now.
