Salve a tutti,

cortesia qualcuno conosce un sito dove trovare i driver per un
conexant, tenendo presente che è un winmodem. Grazie per l'aiuto

Re: [newbie-it] Come fare per...

2002-01-21 Thread Fabio Manunza

Ciao
dedicato a Linux. Stiamo ancora aspettando...Si metta in fila..:-).
Ciao

[newbie-it] Non leggo i file di testo!

2002-01-21 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[newbie] Sound card recommendation for IBM Aptiva 2168 using Mandrake 8.

2002-01-21 Thread Brian Durant

Hi again,

Does anyone recommend a PCI sound card for an IBM Aptiva 2168 using Mandrake
8?? I know that Linux in theory supports many sound cards, but I would like
to find a card that is easily recognized by Mandrake 8, as I am a newbie to
Linux and would like to avoid the worst difficulties, including trying to
return a card that I can't get to work with Mandrake. I realize there are a
large number of cards listed on the Mandrake site, but I am interested in
personal experiences/recommendations.

Cheers,

Brian

Hola, Brian. The SB Live (OEM) is working fine, for me. (Mobo Soyo 7BVA,
PIII 733.) But there is a little problem: Kmix report two cards: 1. Cirrus
Logic CS4297A rev B with the legend: Invalid mixer; and 2. Creative SBLive -
Emu10k1, and I don't know why. The second is the correct one, and works OK.

Good luck

Unless you had a particular need for amazing sound quality (which seems
pointless to me when the case fans make such a noise), I would suggest a
cheap BRANDED card like a Creative Sound Blaster PCI
Linux detects it straight away, and it works in all modes.

All for only £12

Re: [newbie] How to speed up Linux Mandrake 8?

2002-01-21 Thread shane

so i have 2.4.8-26 and am using Reiserfs. haven't seen any trouble except
when i use realplayer i start using swap, until then no swap at all.
(512megs) so how bad is the vm speed problem? is it worth updating?

On Sunday 20 January 2002 11:48, you spoke unto me thusly:

 Install a newer kernel. The problem is the vm in early kernel 2.4 (up
 to about kernel 2.4.10).

 Alternatively, install kernel 2.2 right on your installation disks which
 will work much better, and will fully support supermount. The only
 caution here is if you used Reiserfs, the one for kernel 2.2 is a
 different version than the one for 2.4 and using kernel 2.2 with the
 newer version will _NOT_ work and will destroy data.

Are you using KDE for your desktop? if so click on the icon that says
Internet It will bring up Kppp dialer. You will have to know your ISPs two
DNS addresses, like 207.217.126.81 or similar. You should make the device
on the device tab /dev/ttyS0 and you will need your dial in number and

install wvdial off your mandrake cd's

then go to /etc in an xterm (as root) and type 'touch wvdial.conf'

then type wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

it will go and find your modem, query it, and put its details in
/etc/wvdial.conf...

then, edit that file, and fill in the blanks for dialup number, username and
password..

then, run the file by typing: wvdial

the modem will dialup your ISP, and work out what it needs... it works
great..

I create two files called dial and hangup.. by doing this:

touch /usr/sbin/dial
and
touch /usr/sbin/hangup

then edit dial and put: wvdial
in it, and any other things you want to run on dialup, (like restarting you
firewall or whatever.)

then do the same for hangup, and this time put: killall wvdial

then, whenever you want to dial, you type dial, and ditto with hangup...

works great, and it solved a problem I had, where my ISP, uses two different
routers to connect to, both of which had different prompting methods and as
such normal dialup scripts wouldn't work...

give it a go, its easy to do, and works great... (you will have to use sudo
if you want to do it as anyone other then root.)

anyone know anything about this? i have not personally had more than 2
crashes with mandrake since i started using it with 7.1, and i am on an
athelon, but the news makes it sound like only _some_ cpus are affected.

if you use the fix and are not affected are you taking a performance hit
for
nothing?

[newbie] supermount kernel

2002-01-21 Thread Franki

Hi all,

Since the newer cooker kernels seem to be fine with supermount, why has
mandrake not put on in updates that will allow people to use supermount
without resorting to installing cooker kernels?

Is it because mandrake never add functionality to a distro instead prefering
to leave it to the next version of the distro??

personaly I have no problem with that, except that I think supermount was
too important a thing to leave out of a distro,, and mandrake would have
alot of happier customers if they released a supermount patch that is
basically a supermount safe 2.4 kernel...

what do you guys think?

I was running 2.4.16-11 for ages with supermount enabled,, and never had a
problem with it..

I would just prefer to have a kernel endorsed by mandrake as being stable

[newbie] cleaning /tmp

2002-01-21 Thread Bill Winegarden

Hi,
I have been having problems with losing my user accounts so I have been
looking at a lot of possibilities.
One I have found isI remember checking the option to clean /tmp .
However, now when I reboot, there is a lot of stuff remaining in /tmp from my
faulty user.

ls there any harm in cleaning the /tmp directory manually? Also, where is
that option located so that I might 're-inititiate' it?

Many thanks,
Bill W.

Just to add to Dennis' post, FYI /dev/ttyS0 = COM1 in Windoze and /dev/ttyS1

You have 2 choices if you use dialup. If you are using Gnome, I recommend
wvdial. If you use KDE, go to the K menu, Networking, Remote Access and open
the Internet Dialer. Go to the Setup tab on the bottom, then New and
Dailog Setup and give your connection a name. Type in the connection phone
number, then add--you can add a whole string of #'s, one at a time. Open the
IP tab and check the box for Dynamic IP Address. Open the Gateway tab
and check Default Gateway, unless your ISP uses a specific address for a
gateway, then you will check the Static Gateway and fill in the address.
Check the box Assign the Default Route to this Gateway.
Open the DNS tab, and type in your ISP's domain name (mine is gorge.net).
 Click the manual box, and type in your ISP's primary domain address,
(should be something like 200.123.132) and click Add. Do it again for your
ISP's secondary DNS server address. Click OK.

Open the Device tab. It will probably say /dev/modem This is usually
o.k., but not always. Open the Modem tab and click the Query Modem
button. If the system finds the modem, you will get a Modem Query Results
box within a few seconds, and you're all setup.
If the system doesn't find your modem, go back to the Device tab and try
the dropdown arrow, choosing /dev/ttyS0, /dev/ttyS1, /dev/ttyS2, etc., in
succession, going to the Modem tab and querying the modem with each
selection. If that all fails to work, get back to the list.

you can use kppp from within gnome as well ,, just open an xterm and type:
kppp

and off you go, i used to use kppp from within icewm all the time.

still think wvdial is better thought, console tools like this are awesome,,
and use very little resources, unlike kppp and others.

why not just boot from your mandrake install CD, and at the prompt, type

However, if one of my tries to recover the system I remember that I gat a

Well, I'll give a try to this boot disk from another install

 Can you boot from your Boot floppy?

 If so you should be able to fix it. It looks as if you have edited the
 lilo.conf and fstab files incorrectly

 Your lilo.conf file should look something like this :-

 default=linux-2.4.8-34
 boot=/dev/hda
 map=/boot/map
 install=/boot/boot.b
 vga=normal
 keytable=/boot/uk.klt
 lba32
 prompt
 timeout=50
 message=/boot/message
 menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
 image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.8-34.1mdk
 label=linux-2.4.8-34
 root=/dev/hda5
 read-only
 optional
 vga=normal
 append= hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi devfs=nomount quiet
 initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.8-34.1mdk.img

 ***SNIP  more stanzas follow

 Here I have defined IDE devices hdd and hdd as SCSI emulation.
 I am running with devfs disabled, but you may not need to do that.
 (In my system the CD writer would not work with devfs enabled)
 I am using the updated kernel so my Lilo points to the 2.4.8-34 image.

 After modifying /etc/lilo.conf be sure to run /sbin/lilo as root and be
sure
 there are no error messages or else you will not be able to boot. (This
could
 well be your problem)

 Now my /etc/fstab file looks like this :-

 /dev/scd0/mnt/cdrom  auto
 iocharset=iso8859-1,user,exec,noauto,codepage=850,nodev  0 0
 /dev/scd1   /mnt/cdrom2 auto
 iocharset=iso8859-1,user,exec,noauto,codepage=850,nodev  0 0

 (these two statements occupy one line each. there is a space before and
after
 'auto')
 device hdc is now referred to as /dev/scd0 and hdd has become /dev/scd1
 Note you do not need any 'dev=' in the fstab file.

 If you can get in to make these corrections you should be OK

On Monday 21 January 2002 11:14, you spoke unto me thusly:

sarcasmlike the way the slackers don't have anyway to update like a

AMD's problem not theirs.

 I was running 2.4.16-11 for ages with supermount enabled,, and never had a

then you answered your own question, mandrake does support such a kernel, and
if you ask them for support on supermount my bet is that they give you
several options to solve it, and that is one.

how is that not adding functionality to a distro? i wish the other distros i
have tried did half as much!

guess that is why i stuck with this one.

[newbie] Zip/KDE annoyance

2002-01-21 Thread Todd Slater

This is probably more a KDE thing than Mandrake, but hoping to get some
advice.

I can mount my zip using the desktop icon in KDE. I deleted the old zip icon,
created a new one, specified Device and Mount Point, and everything is cool.

Until I log out and back on. Then, another zip icon appears, giving me two.

So I deleted the one I created, went with what seems to be an auto-created
one. But it defaults to the wrong Device (/mnt/zip, I have to tell it
/dev/sda4), and every time I re-tell it, log out, log back in, and it forgets
what I've told it!

I can get it to work, it's just annoying to have to keep doing that everytime.

Good. You can also get rid of the Outlook Express you appear to use ;-)

Also
 there some kind of Term Emulator I can run? I need to attach to a unix
 host and have it support sco ansi ect.

Heck... There is a whole bunch of them on your discs. I do not use ANSI
emulation myself so I cannot say which is the best to use.

 Any one have any good links to beginers info? I can get mandrake to run
 find now but I am very unclear as to what I am doing or why something
 worked.

Start by reading the documentation. There is an Icon on your desktop.
Also remember almost all 'commands' in Linux have a built in manual. Just type
'man commandname' in a terminal to read the manual.

You will also learn a lot at www.mandrakeuser.org
There are documents called HOWTO's at http://www.linuxdoc.org/
If you bought the PowerPack edition on your discs you have several complete
Books on Linux, and you can browse books online at http://www.oreilly.com/
Read the archives of this list at
http://www.mail-archive.com/newbie@linux-mandrake.com/
Any question you could possibly ask has probably already been answered.

Learning Linux is a steep curve. You will be baffled at first, but if you
have patience and application you will soon learn to appreciate its power.

Installing software bewilders me. Rpm files install but then
 don't create any icons to load them.
Well made RPM packages will insert an entry in your 'K Menu' Not all are well
made however :( In which case you must insert them in the menu by hand.

If I navigate to the bin directory
 I can find the executable but they are all in the directory. That seem
 rather troublesome when it come to organization. Thanks

You do not have to navigate to a directory to use an application. Almost all
RPM's will put executables in well defined places which are in your 'Path'
You only have to type the command name in a terminal to open an application.
If you use the menu editor (Mandrake Control CentreSystemMenus) then just
put the command name in the box when prompted and then you can start apps
from the 'K Menu'
Alternatively Right click on the desktop and select 'CreateLink to
Application' and put the command name in there and you will have a desktop
icon.

The Linux file system is defined by standards. Once you get to know how it is
organized you will know where to find things.

You will also find that for anything you want to do in Linux there are around
eight different ways of doing it. Just choose the one you are most
comfortable with  :)

[newbie] DHCP trouble with Comcast.net

2002-01-21 Thread Steven Bradtke

Previous to the recent switchover from @Home's network to Comcast's own
network,
I assigned my firewall machine a static IP address and everything worked
fine.  However,
now I've got to use DHCP to lease a dynamically assigned address from the
network.
I can't get this to work. I keep getting back the message timed out
waiting for a valid
DHCP server response. My DHCP client is dhcpcd. I live in Howard
county, in the
Baltimore, MD area. I've tried this using both Mandrake 8.0 and 8.1. Has
anyone had
success getting this to work?

Thanks,

Steve

Setting a static IP probably won't work once they are fully converted, but I
find that sometimes my original setup works and other times I have to use
the command line to activate dhcpcd and get connected. Try 'man dhcpcd'
and see if that helps.

2002-01-21 Thread George Czerw

Steve,

I'm NOT using a separate firewall, but it sounds like you have a bad
DHCP configuration, and you could run into this problem whether you
have a firewall or just a single machine.

1. Make sure that /etc/resolv.conf contains the IP addresses of the
Comcast DNS servers in your area AND make sure that the search domain
correctly reflects the new network information if you know it because
you have either gotten it from a machine that works or from someone in
your area who knows what it is. Mine looks like:

nameserver 68.46.144.5
nameserver 68.46.144.6
search brlngt01.nj.comcast.net

2.  Your /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/net_resolv.default should
contain the same information that the resolv.conf file does.

3.  Your initial /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 should
look like the following:

DEVICE=eth0
DHCP_HOSTNAME=whatever your's is
BOOTPROTO=dhcp
IPADDR=
NETMASK=
NETWORK=
BROADCAST=
ONBOOT=yes

After DHCP passes the parameters, the blanks should be filled in
with the correct information.

4. If you haven't turned your cable modem off since the conversion,
you should do so, so that will clear any cached information out of its
memory.

Hope this helps.

George

2002-01-21 Thread YUKKI
i had a same problem.

you should to chose step "i can set up your computer to automatically
start X upon booting would you like X to start when you reboot" to NO

than you can see the console after reboot.
and you can reconfigure /ete/X11/XF86Confiug or XF86Config-4

otherwise i don't know how to boot.

i fixed to XF86Config.

Re: [newbie] which kernel should I run LM 8.1

2002-01-21 Thread Brian Parish

34.1 is the latest stable, released kernel. You'll find much later
kernels on the cooker, but these are still classified as test versions
and are not recommended unless you either know a lot about what you are
doing, or are happy to potentially have to deal with interesting
problems, or both!

Needless to say - I am running 34.1. That said, the cooker versions
certainly work, so if you want to walk on the wild side

BTW, in case you haven't upgraded before, please make sure you manually
download the kernel and use rpm -ivh kernel... to install it. Don't use
MandrakeUpdate , or rpm -U. See the achive for LOTS more on this if you
need convincing.

I just installed 34.1 on another machine this morning and found the same
behaviour as I mentioned in a previous post:

---snip---
Just installed the security update for the kernel. After rpm -ivh
kernel I noted that lilo.conf (excluding the menu stuff at top) now
looked like:

image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/hda5
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append= devfs=mount quiet
vga=791
read-only

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.8-34.1mdk
label=248-341
root=/dev/hda5
read-only
optional
vga=normal
append= devfs=mount quiet
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.8-34.1mdk.img

A check of /boot reveals that initrd.img is linked to
initrd-2.4.8-34.1mdk.img

So, my lilo allows me to boot either the new kernel by choosing 248-341,
or the new kernel by choosing linux. That doesn't seem like a very
failsafe option, so I added:

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.8-26mdk
label=old-linux
root=/dev/hda5
read-only
optional
vga=normal
append= devfs=mount quiet
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.4.8-26mdk.img

and ran lilo before attempting a reboot. The new kernel seems fine, so
there was no need, but it still leaves the question of why the install
behaves that way. Anyone care to comment?
snip--

so check that before rebooting too!

Brian

If you choose expert and upgrade during the install, then no - your data
will remain untouched.

Try this first choosing no packages for installation. Chances are it
will fix it magically! No warranty implied though ;-)

[newbie] Security and services that are running?

2002-01-21 Thread Mick

Hi list,

Being new, and currently enjoying an installation that's up and running (even if it
did need a few tweaks here and there) I came across an article about 'Armoring Linux'.
It was all about how default installations leave a lot of unneeded services running
and provide access for 'undesirables' to wreak havoc if they so choose. This article
has kinda scared the bejeepers out of me, as I could've sworn I just said yes to most
of the default questions during (the most recent) install.
The article referenced a lot to do with the Redhat distro, and I found myself at a
loss on some of the more technical points and instructions about what to do.
So, here's my question. Where in LM 8.1 do I start to find out what services are
running? I am not using my Linux box as a server or anything 'technically heavy', just
home use with email and browsing, MP3 playing etc...
Will I need to setup a firewall? And of course, how do I start to shut off the
unneeded services?
Mick (nervously awaiting!)
