Actually, I have to agree with Lee, the OT list has largely been flame wars 
and policitally motivated ones at that.  Not to mention a lot of 
anti-american (and anti North Amercian) mud slinging.

I've taken to popping in..opening a couple of posts and then toasting every 
message on the list.

I'll be unsubscribing to that list as soon as I can get around to it because 
it is most definitely not a friendly place.  If I want flame wars about 
politics and religion I can go to the local bar, thanks.

[newbie] Savage demo (fairly long post)

some here were not subcribed to the game list - follow whichever thread/list 
that you prefer)

Okay, the Savage demo for Linux has been released - it looks pretty 
impressive. You can get all the details/download it from:

I'm curious to see if anyone has problems - I had a few. Same problems I had 
with Enemy Territory and Urban Terror. Seems my tmp file is not big enough to 
uncompress these files. I issued a "export TMP=/home/darklord/tmp" but that 
still didn't work. I finally edited /root/.bash_profile and added:

export TEMP=/home/darklord/tmp
export TMP=/home/darklord/tmp
export TMPDIR=/home/darklord/tmp

and this seemed to fix that problem. Everytime I had tried to install it after 
I got the error messages relating to room, the file corrupted and I'd have to 
extract it again.

So...like most *.sh files, I installed it as root, "sh filename". It installed 
cleanly (the license agreement is *long* reading), and it even let me pick 
where to install it, including symbolic links. I installed it in 
/usr/local/games and put the link in /usr/local/bin. Then it asks if I want 
to launch the game - of course, being root I said no. I ran it from my normal 
user account, and it immediately launched an updater which reported that it 
did not have write permissions. So I exited, or tried. When I got to the 
final screen thats says buy or exit, I clicked exit and it stayed there. I 
did get my mouse cursor back though. I switched to   , logged 
in as root, did a "killall -9 savage" and then switched back to  but only 
got a black screen so I had to kill my Xserver and start again. So I started 
it as root (ugh), it ran the updater, and launched the game. Its an online 
game so I quit out, thinking now I can run it as a normal user. Nope - still 
launches the updater and I still don't have permissions. So, I deleted the 
whole thing, links and all, and reinstalled it into 
/home/darklord/Games/Savage_Demo with a link to /usr/local/bin. Game now 
runs, updates and plays from my normal user account, but I still can't exit 
the game without killing my Xserver. 

I hope this helps others and maybe someone can tell me what to do to get the 
game to exit cleanly - it looks terrific! :-)

After you fill in the password, did you press "ENTER" or click on "OK" with 
mouse? Sometimes if we just hit enter, it screws. Believe it or not.
I tried typing in password and hitting enter also, clicking the OK 
button. Also tried starting from eterm window as superuser still
same result invalid password.

thanks derek.

i did as instructed, and inserted the MAIL_USER= line in
/etc/security/msec/security.conf.

now if i return to mcc, it shows the correct email address, but the check
box for Security Alerts in Mandrake Control Center -> Security -> Basic is
still unchecked.

i believe i need another parameter to activate that option.

strangely, security.conf is a totally empty file before i editted it.

alternatively, can someone (preferably running at standard security level)
attach a their security.conf file for reference?

or direct me to a web resource that contains descriptions of wat parameters
do what in security.conf? i've checked 'man msec', which directed me to
/usr/share/doc/msec-???/security.txt, but that only provided a description
of what the various security levels meant.

It worked for me.

I installed Linux 9.0 on a brand new 60 gig HD then slaved my old 40 gig 
Win98 drive to that one, pointed Lilo to it and it booted just fine. My 
Win drive has since crashed altogether so I am totally Linux now.

I did my editing in MCC

I guess it means you better post your /etc/lilo.conf cause you don't
have the right hdyx (here y is a letter for the drive position on the
ide bus, and the x is a number for a partition. I don't think you are
gonna get win9x on without it being on the first partition of the
first drive on the first IDE bus, ie hda1 or maybe hda5. 
I seem to remember something about Win9x insisting that it be first
because of a nasty habit of rewriting the boot sector.

[newbie] No sound with Digital(SPDIF) out on CD-ROM with SB-Live

I'm having a spot of bother with playing CD's on my DIY special Athlon 1100 
beast.
I've just installed 9.1 on a dual boot with winXP and all is cool except I 
can't hear audio cd's played in my DVD-ROM drive.
It's hooked up to a SB-Live Player 5.1 sound card via a spdif drive audio 
cable and works fine in WinXP but there doesn't seem to be any volume control 
for the digital input on Aumix.
MP3s play ok through XMMS and the drive spins up and plays but I get no sound 
at all from the CD.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I'm very newbie in Linux and I have a problem to make something here...

After install Mandrake 9.1 in my hd, I bring another with win98 already
have and install it...

I trying to insert the win98 in LILO menu but it does not work...

The hd that have md9.1 is hdc6 and the other, that have win98, is
hdd1...

What I did:
Configuration -> KDE -> System -> Boot Manager (LILO)
in the second page (OS), Add another SO:
boot disk = /dev/hdd1
label = windows98
Ok -> Ok...
even do that, the option to enter in windows98 does not show in LILO
menu...

What I miss or what I did wrong ??

I've never had problems running Gnome apps in KDE or vice-versa (been using 
KDE for 2 yrs now), however I don't use evolution or kpilot so perhaps 
that's not much help.  Hopefully someone else is using those two specific 
apps in KDE and can comment.


I use Evolution with the KDE desktop without any problems, in fact, last week I successfully sync'd my Garmin PDA/GPS with Evo (serial connection) using the included Gnome pilot program.

  The only Epox board AMD recommends for the 3200+ is the
EP-8RDA3+
ATX

   I'd advise to avoid nVidia nForce chipset boards for now. They're 
no better supported under Linux than their video chipsets. IOW's, 
proprietary drivers that need to be changed any time you change 
kernels. Plus all the other garbage that goes with needin a 3rd 
party closed source tainted kernel.  There's been other complaints 
about nForce + Linux too.

  OTOH, if you've found an Epox VIA chipset board that supports 
400mhz FSB, the AMD lack of recommend might not be that big'a deal. 
Epox makes quality boards. 3200+'s are relatively expensive tho. 
For the purposes you cite, I'd look at AMD recommended VIA chipset 
boards for a XP 2500+ (cheap, about $80). Probly the current 'best 
bang for the buck' cpu AMD currently sells. It overclocks well too.

   In any event, I believe you'll do well keeping to VIA chipset 
boards. Their best one's are usually their A series, eg, KT400a.

the only way you could do worse is to buy a ready made computer ;)
Then quality is certainly not there, an Linux compatibility is 
suspect also.

Ok, I'm running fetchmail --nokeep as a root cron hourly,
and my /root/.fetchmailrc is as follows:
poll mail.voyager.net proto pop3

If I log in as root, and just issue the command fetchmail, it gets and 
deletes messages.
I copied the rc over to /etc/fetchmailrc, and it still does it.  I am at 
a loss to explain this.
My previous setup, a copy of MDK 6.0 running on nearly the same 
hardware, didn't do
this.  I download all messages for both email accounts to the server, 
then serve it via IMAP
to several computers in the home.

I was in the same situation. I switched printerdrake to expert mode
(options->expert mode) , clicked "add printer", selected "printer on
SMB/Windows 95/98/NT Server". You then have screens to enter the network
details for the printer, and the printer model. It worked first time for
me printing to a canon on a windows XP machine.

I've never had problems running Gnome apps in KDE or vice-versa (been using 
KDE for 2 yrs now), however I don't use evolution or kpilot so perhaps 
that's not much help.  Hopefully someone else is using those two specific 
apps in KDE and can comment.

It`s not useless to send, `cause the EP vote is just a sort of advice to
the EU Commission - as I understand it - which has to decide yet how they

I'll file your response under "useful stuff" until somebody around here asks 
me to build something other than a P 4 or dual Athlon machine. Seems to be 
almost all I'm asked about the last six weeks. Other than the usual K8 
(Athlon FX51, Opteron, and AMD 64) requests that can't be filled at the 
moment simply because no processors or motherboards are available.

Hi Damian - I'm using a Logitech Pro 3000 (Quickcam) that works pretty good 
under Linux/Mandrake.

I'm not sure if its still made though.

I'll send you a snapshot taken with it using Camstream - its not 9 - 12 feet, 
(more like 3) but it should give you an idea of the quality.

Im using XFce and have for some time, i have run evolution but dont care
for it and i run korganizer other k apps and gnome apps all the time
without problems.

That was tried and the company has spent this year in the French equivalent of 
Chapter 11. Concentration on the core business is required, the core is (or 
should always be IMHO) the Mandrake Linux distribution. It's hard to convince 
people to spend money to support the developers that make this possible when 
the "Latest and Greatest" edition of the operating system is available as a 
free download before paying customers receive their copy they bought.

Hello, Max,

One of the things I like about Linux is the lack of rules (freedom?).

I use Evolution, at the moment, with Fluxbox without any noticeable
problems - in the past i used it with Gnome & KDE.

Basically, try anything. You may (with some apps) need to add various
libraries, but if you're using urpmi it takes care of dependencies.

implies that those programs will run well in all desktops (for example, the

the care to select what's pertinent).

The Gnome environment doesn't work well for me -- it is much slower and
uses a lot more CPU than KDE in my installation.  I've spent the last
several weeks customizing KDE's appearance and behavior and now have a

I have installed postfix. it is shown also as below.

Now error from anacron has gone. I feel this si because it can send output to 
root as in

I assume that you are still having the problem  Can you post a copy of 
your fetchmailrc file (minus specific ids/passwords) and a copy of the cron 
command that you are using to call fetchmail?  That might help trigger an 
epiphany for someone here.

I found myself thinking last night, (bad move huh,) wouldn't it be nice to 
support those nice MDK people by buying a power pack of 9.2.

The 9.2 list appears not to have been compiled yet, but the 9.1 list didn't 
seem to include anything that I hadn't already had running by download, and 
certainly nothing that I was tempted to pay the money for.

Anybody want to persuade me otherwise?

And to stay On Topic, it's a 7 CD set.
I was about to ask the same question.  I'd be tempted if it included 
some useful commercial software like win4lin, but I don't want to pay 
for a bunch of demos and betas.

even the hardcore gamer might be caught by one of those even if it's 
not his wanted *** windows title.

what I actually ment here is something like a set of cds of additional 
software ... not comercial .. but simply a collected bunch of software 
freely available on the web in mandrake rpms. I would love to download 
such huge software packs and discouver in them all sorts of weird 
software people have cooked up ... like who knows what kind of time 
tracking tool, or free music making software, or 3d (especially) 
software like k3d, blender, povray, yafray ...  possibly a disk made by 
users for users.

[newbie] ext3 vs FAT in partion table

How is it possible that fdisk (and sfdisk) report partition hda1 as 
"Win95 FAT32" (id=0x0b), but that partition is mounted as ext3?

When I formatted the drive, I left hda1 partition free for later windows 
installation. Then I decided to use it for linux, and I *think* I 
reformatted it as ext3. This morning I noticed the discrepancy between 
the partition table information and the fstab.

It looks like the "id" field of the PT is not really used by the kernel. 
Can anyone explain this?

There is really nothing in the PowerPack that is not on the mirrors in main or 
cintrib except the disk of commercial apps and the install support and the 
documentation and the one month trial membership to Club and the feeling that 
you supported the company that spent a lot of money to develop the product 
you use.

When I referred to the 9 disk set I was referring to the Prosuite edition, not 
the PowerPack.  This has an extra install disk just for servers and a 60 day 
eval copy of IBM's DB2.  Also has 90 days phone support.

will be supporting Ogg soon we are told. The manufacturer is working on 
the firmware upgrade now and we expect it to be available for download

Instead of using a cron job try running it as a daemon.

Install the fetchmail-daemon RPM from your CDs
It will start automatically using the /etc/fetchmailrc config file.

I don't know why your settings are not sticking, but you can edit the 
/etc/security/msec/security.conf file directly
insert the line MAIL_USER=

Also to get mails about failed cron jobs edit /etc/crontab and insert
MAILTO=

Don't forget for the mails to be sent you need a mail server such as postfix 
to be running. If you do not have a mail server then install ssmtp RPM and

Do you have any idea how much work goes into "all the free software around"

Does anybody else think developers should work for free? Or that MandrakeSoft 
should be a non-profit company?

Take a swing at Debian or Slack or Gentoo or Sorceror if you want free. Or use 
the free download version of Mandrake Linux and package all of the additional 
software you want from source. Or download the source code for the software 
you want, learn how, and build your own distribution.

Or if you're truly that impressed with Mandrake Linux, do as Greg posted, and 
buy a box set or one of the "disk only" sets.

As with all Open Source Software the choices are yours.

It is possible that console is using the /etc/fetchmailrc file rather than 
/root/.fetchmailrc file which is probably what the cron job is using.  You 
might want to check by making sure that both files, if they exist are 
identical to see if that fixes the problem.  

You can also specify the exact location of the config file as a parameter to 
the cron job command or build a script that does it for you.

By default, webmin uses a /etc/fetchmailrc location for settings while 
fetchmailconf uses /root/.fetchmailrc.  Not sure which one is used by 
fetchmail if you don't specify it.

Hi Scott,
Yes Webmin great tool but I don't think I can use it in this 
situation (least I don't think I can). Its my firewall/gateway box
and I don't have X installed. Friend of mine did a minimal install
(MDK) on it, used firewall builder (another nice piece of software) 
to set it up. I just ssh into it to do the things I need to do.

I have a Toshiba TF631 bought on ebay for about !00.00 US.  Look for
one with the network card installed and it will do all.

This is the 2nd one we've gotten the same way.  I put the wrong
toner in the first, then fubar'ed the fuser trying to clean up the
mess.  Expensive lesson, but a lesson nonetheless. It'll be valuable
for parts down the road, too, the next time I get brave.

I just tried to use userdrake from the kde configuration
menu and it asked for root password I typed it in
correctly :-) and it gave me this message.

Same message with "gnome-system-log" other things like
linuxconfig and mcc accept root password ok.
