Konstantin,
I have the same chipset and have managed to get it to work with XFree86
3.3.6 and 4.0 in L-M7.0. There is a thread in the expert list archive
you could check under SiS6326 where I posted my XF86Config file. Run
Xconfigurator or xf86config and set the values for your system and
desired resolution and color depth but do not test. Then edit (I
recommend using midnight commander) the /etc/XF86Config file by going to
the section Device configured by Xconfigurator (or xf86config) and under
the lines Device, Identifier, Driver, VideoRam add a new line:
Option "sw_cursor"
just like that. There should be other options listed and in my system
they are all commented out. Save and at the command line type startx.
It should work. You will need to edit /etc/inittab file to
id:5:initdefault if you want to routinely start X on bootup. Good luck.

Subject: [newbie] XFree86 version 4 and the SIS 6326 chip

 Hello List,
Has anyone managed to get the SiS 6326 chip to work with version 4 of
 XFree86?
I installed v4 without drama but, no matter what I do, I cannot get a
normal mouse pointer; rather, I have the big white square that has
featured prominently on the newbie list.
I have read the archives and tried (I think correctly) the Options
"sw_cursor", "noaccel" and "no_bitblt" as appropriate. I have tried to
configure a serial IntelliMouse and a conventional 3-button mouse with
 the same unhappy result.
I have reverted to the previous XFree86(3.3.6?) that ships with LM7.0
without problems and have the normal pointer back. Does this suggest a
fault in the "sis" driver in v4 rather than a fault in the SiS chip?
Then again, some people are having problems with the earlier XFree86,
but it seems strange that it will work in my setup but not with v4. I
have an Aopen PA50 AGP card (not flash, I know, and I wish I hadn't
 bought it).
Has anyone any ideas to help me run v4 other than "buy a better card"?
 Thanks.

Just as well I didn't know that before I downloaded kernel 2.2.14

unsuccessful attempts to try to eliminate a kppp error message as

with Axalon before) which means I made xconfig three times. Still, if
you're that positive about it maybe I've been on another thread and had

Are you sure you were root, in /usr/src/linux and made mrproper before
trying to make menuconfig or xconfig?
Try again and good luck.

[newbie] CAN'T MOUNT FLOPPY

2000-01-30 Thread Dennis Robertson

Hello List,
I am using LM7.0b(Oxygen) which until yesterday was running well pending
receipt of LM7.0(Air). Then I tried to recompile the kernel which
succeeded apart from Kppp(since fixed) and mounting of floppies.
I have a problem which has previously been posted but following the
thread in the archives sheds no light on the solution.
When recompiling I elected to retain Supermount which had been working
well. Now, it works with cds but not with floppies.
When I click on the desktop floppy icon the KFM screen opens followed
shortly by a KFM Error ! Could not list directory contents file:
/mnt/floppy/ .
My /etc/fstab reads:
/mnt/floppy /mnt/floppy supermount fs=vfat,dev=/dev/fd0 0 0
The cdrom entry is identical, apart from the filesystem. I have tried
using auto, autofs and ext2 in the floppy entry, without success.
If I try to open the /mnt directory in KFM the screen freezes, requiring
CTL-ALT-BKSPC to unfreeze.
If I use FileRunner(fr), the mount directory opens showing the
following:
./ 1024(filesize)
../ 1024
DOS_hda1/ 8192
DOS_hda5/ 4096
cdrom 0(then after first use 2048)
disk/ 1024
floppy/ 0
If I attempt to open a floppy in fr I get a screen:
Error in path
/mnt/floppy
! Error: Couldn't change working directory to "mnt/floppy": I/O error
Please edit new path or cancel. If you want to create it, press Create.
Pressing create or OK has no effect and the warning screen persists
until Cancel is pressed.
Unfortunately, this problem has affected the old kernel as well, so I am
completely unable to mount floppies. My son recompiled his kernel on
his laptop at the same time and has the same problem.
Can anyone tell me how to fix this problem while retaining the use of
Supermount or, alternatively, how to get rid of supermount without
recompiling if possible.
Thanks.

Hello All,
I am now a confirmed WindowMaker/Filerunner user but I asked this
question a while back and actually managed to solve it myself while
waiting for a response - about the only problem I have solved. As I
recall you click K, panel, edit menus. You see a display of menus. On
the right panel click applications then right click any on the list.
Down to new, and an application screen appears with the Application
window highlighted. Using the arrow on the window select sub menu. I
called it Utilities2. You then get a new entry of that name to which you
can move part of the original utilities list ( I started at L). Select
an icon to differentiate it and you can have two icons in the panel or
you can click K and select either Utilities or Utilities2.
I'm hazy on the details but I know the general method works because I
still have that setup in KDE. Wouldn't you think this would be resolved
before distros were supplied to users?

Appologies, I mis understood. Look in the untar'd distribution for the SO51a
installer, and see if there is an uninstall script (seems to me the readme said
something about removing). If there is run it - I think it should remove all
the SO51a files from your system. If there is not, check the Sun site where you
downloaded the .tar file for removal information. In either case, make sure you
do the removal as the same user as when you did the install. Then while logged
on as a regular user, try re-installing again. I know there is a security issue
with installing as "root" - and it is not a good idea. I do not know enough
either about Linux or SO51a to be of any more help than this - sorry.

 Dennis,

I am not trying to be smart or anything like that, but did you connect with
pppd first? Or perhaps kppp? It has been my experience that Linux does not
automate things like connecting to the web for you. Personally I like this
policy. It takes a little more concious thought on my part, but in the end I am
more secure with my system. Make sure that you are connected to your ISP then
 try the SO51a stuf again.

 HTH,

 Ernie

Ernie,
I should have said that I was already connected. Just now I got a
different message that SO was unable to connect to the pop3 server and
then it crashed when I clicked retry. Now it has evidently damaged
something because SO will not launch. This has happened before and
forced me to re-install. I dunno what is going on. Thanks.

[newbie] Annoying Error Messages

I am trying this post again in case someone new can help. When I select
Kppp as user I get an error message to the effect that the kernel (the
latest update -22mdk) has no Kppp support and to consult my system
administrator or use a kernel with Kppp support. When I click OK I get
a fully functioning Kppp panel. Anyone know how to zap this message?

Also, as user, when I close down Star Office I get an error message:
Error opening configuration file. I click OK and SO shuts down. I had
a disaster installing SO as User so I uninstalled and reinstalled as
root. Maybe I screwed up doing that. Can anyone help? ( I am posting
to this list because I feel it is not an SO-specific problem.)

rdate needs to be SUID root first of all (otherwise it
won't run at all.) Second, how exactly are you calling
rdate? You need to put a server/host in there, such as
"time.nist.gov" The server, time.nist.gov, is the atomic

 It works here...

I know it's bad form to reply to your own messages, but I

root can modify the hardware clock. So, I guess that's one

need manualy update fstab (we avoid this as much as posible)

Last question. How do I create a boot disk for the new kernel? The

Hello Axalon,
Thanks for your input. I arbitarily changed the hostname and it
corrected the sendmail problem. Why the new kernel would have changed
an area of linuxconf that I have not dared to enter I don't know.
Also I read man mkbootdisk and through trial and error rather than clear
assistance I entered: mkbootdisk --device /dev/floppy 2.2.13-22mdk and
it worked. Each time I made an error I got a clue about what to try
next. Better than Riven!
Surely it is possible to write a floppy mounting program that works? If
you are not familiar with the problem try an install of L-M6.1 and then
try to mount msdos and ext2 floppies. The default Fstab floppy entry is
far removed from what is required.
As for kppp, surely it would feature largely in a linux site to rival
the Windows 98 Annoyances site.

[newbie] XF86Config

1999-11-28 Thread Dennis Robertson

Hello touco,
I have been off list but note from the digest your problem with your
Trident 3D Image 975 video card. I have the same card with an LG
Studioworks 56i monitor and had the same problem.
I suggest you preferably do another install and select the components
you have but don't probe or start X. I selected only 16 bits at
1024x768res. Reboot to the innit3 prompt, log in,then type mc to call up
midnight commander and then:
F9 tab to Options, c for configure options, y for lynx-like motion, S
for save.
Tab left then down to ETC, then to X11 and down to XF86Config. F4 to
edit.
In the monitor section I commented out all modelines until I got to the
one I wanted (in my case 1024x768 at 70Hz). I got this from my monitor
manual as a pre-tuned mode.
Then go down to the Graphic Device section and to the section Graphic
device configured by Xconfigurator. After BoardName (unknown in my
case) insert a new line that reads:
  Option "noaccel"
exactly like that. I think there is a bug that needs this option.
Then down to check that you have the svga server at the colour depth and
res you wanted.
Then F2 to save, F10 to quit and Yes to confirm. You'll be back at the
prompt and type startx. It should work. If not go back into mc and try
another modeline.
A friend showed me how to do this when I was about to abandon Linux.
Good luck.

[newbie] Yamaha OPL3-Sax Sound Card

Hello Gregg,
My son has that card in his IBM Thinkpad and had the same sndconfig

He found he got all the right responses but the sound volume was so low
as to be almost inaudible. He had to click on K, go up to Multimedia,
then to sound mixer panel and set all the volumes fairly high. It then
works fine.
For info his /etc/conf.modules looks like:
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
pre-install pcmcia_core /etc/rc.d/init.d/pcmcia start
alias sound opl3sa2
pre-install sound insmod sound dmabuf=1
alias midi opl3

I just changed my Xclients file to read:

Of course you don't have to add the lines kpanel and kfm -d , I added
these so that the desktop icon for kde and the kpanel would appear. These
are my own tastes. The blackbox binary was located in my /usr/local/bin
file. Make sure that you place the bsetroot bin somewhere where the OS can
access it ie. /bin . Then just save this to your Xclients file, remember to
back up the original Xclients file in case something goes wrong. Then just
run startx from the command line prompt and you will be on you way.
left/right clicking the desktop will pull up the blackbox menu, which
probably needs to be edited to work properly with your system (..very easy

Have fun, and spread the word. Blackbox is the fastest and easiest to

  Thanks Sean,

It works and I am evaluating it. I appreciate the kpanel and kfm

If you want to shutdown from blackbox, right click the desktop and click on exit
in the menu. Don't confuse the blackbox pulldown menu with the kpanel pulldown
menu. If you just want to shutdown your computer, you can exit blackbox and then

shutdown, or wite a little script and give it executable permissions:
 #!/bin/bash
 shutdown now

Or just type in shutdown now from any command line.
I don't know how fast your computer is, but mine is 133Mhz, so I am able to
notice how much of a memory hog KDE is compared to Blackbox. There
may be no noticable difference on faster computers. But you can use xmemon (..I
 think)
and visually compare the two. But, again, this may not matter to folks who are
running 300 + Mhz computers. I also like the way Blackbox is so small and
easily configurable. But thats me. Enjoy.

10gb hard disk. I am currently looking at the a company at
www.pro-star.com. Does anybody have any other suggestions as to another
company with better and/or cheaper laptops?

Any help you could offer would greatly be appreciated.

 thanks,

jas,

I had the same problem with my Epson sc600 and Steve Philp helped me by
suggesting I amend printcap to change the lp0:\ line to read: lp|
lp0:\ . That worked but I then found when installing M6.1 0n my son's
IBM laptop (he has an sc600 as well) that simply not adding the 0 to lp
during install provided a fix. I think there is a setup error that says
a printer is detected at lp0 but then looks for it at lp. But then I am
an absolute newbie so take that with a grain of salt.

Good luck.

[newbie] Scanner

1999-11-20 Thread Dennis Robertson

Hello List,

I am trying to get my Mustek 60011N scanner to work. I have installed
SANE on initial install (and Kpackage confirms) and have printed the
notes on how to configure, build and install SANE as well as sane-mustek
5, which I printed when I was running Caldera2.2. Problem is the files
which should be in /usr/local/lib/, /usr/local//etc/sane.d/ and
/usr/local/man/ do not exist. GIMP cannot see the scanner.

Can anyone tell me what to do from here ( to get my scanner working,
that is ), please?

TIA.

I just changed my Xclients file to read:

 #!/bin/bash
 kpanel
 kfm -d
 /usr/local/bin/blackbox

Of course you don't have to add the lines kpanel and kfm -d , I added
these so that the desktop icon for kde and the kpanel would appear. These
are my own tastes. The blackbox binary was located in my /usr/local/bin
file. Make sure that you place the bsetroot bin somewhere where the OS can
access it ie. /bin . Then just save this to your Xclients file, remember to
back up the original Xclients file in case something goes wrong. Then just
run startx from the command line prompt and you will be on you way.
left/right clicking the desktop will pull up the blackbox menu, which
probably needs to be edited to work properly with your system (..very easy
to do), or the iconify menu.
Have fun, and spread the word. Blackbox is the fastest and easiest to
 modify GUI out there.

 SA

Thanks Sean,

It works and I am evaluating it. I appreciate the kpanel and kfm
additions. It seems faster, but not markedly so. I find it cumbersome
to shut down - is there a way of having it start (run level 5) and
shutdown by default if I decide to go with it.

Regards.

Hello Benjamin,

I wish you better luck in registering SO5.1 than I have had. Online
registration would not work for me. Star Division replied to my
complaint that they wish everyone would download SO5.1a from Sun because
it does not require registration and is the only version that will be
supported in future. If you insist they will give you a company
registration method and number for SO5.1 which will give you unlimited
use, but from then on you will be on your own - no patches or upgrades.
You can download SO5.1a if you have the time and patience or buy it for
$9.95. I am going to wait until I can get it on a magazine cover disk
as I did with SO5.1 (Sun version) for Windoze. Maybe your experience
will be different - I hope so.

I had this too, All you have to do is make sure the box "Autoconfigure

It seemed to "revert" for some reason... I have had no problems since

Sorry, John, parallel. How's this from the SANE-mustek.5 notes: "Note
that this scanner comes with its own ISA card that implements a funky
parallel port (in other words the scanner is not connected to the
printer parallel port. The code present in this release has not been

Steve,

Yes, I usually notice the problem while I am using Netscape on the

noticed that none of the items in K would work either. I found I did
not have to restart X but simply log out and in again to get the system
working. Very annoying though.

On another occasion earlier today I had disconnected, had started to
print some Netscape pages and wanted to stop printing. I found I could
not open Printer Queue and then noted most icons had stopped working. I
was not connected then. But on each occasion I am fairly sure I had
either been connected or was connected just before; ie I had used kppp
to dial the internet shortly before. I hope I am right in thinking you
have an idea of what is wrong.

[newbie] PRINTING

1999-11-16 Thread Dennis Robertson

Hello All,

Now that I have got my printer working thanks to Steve I would like to
know how to stop it. In Windows you can abort print jobs while they are
running, but can this be done in Mandrake 6.1?

I have been into printer queue while print jobs are running (as root)
and tried to remove the job from the queue. I am asked are you sure?
and on responding yes nothing happens and printing continues. I have
switched the printer off but it cranks up the same job when restarted.

I am very pleased to be able to print but does anyone know how to stop
it mid-process?

Thanks.

[newbie] Epson Stylus Color 600

1999-11-13 Thread Dennis Robertson

-Hello All,

I am new to the group and new to Mandrake6.1. I used Caldera
OpenLinux(COL)2.2 for the past 3 months before concluding, along with
the rest of the Linux support group here in Noosa, Australia, that there
was so much divergence occurring between Linux distributions that we
should get with the strength- RedHat -and concluded that Mandrake
offered the most potential within the RedHat family.

One of the real pains with Linux is printing. I have an Epson Stylus
Color 600 which is allegedly supported by Linux, especially RedHat. In
COL it took about 2 weeks to find a printfilter, download it and get it
to work. When I saw Printtool and its direct support for my printer I
thought I had it made. I used "print directly using lpr" to test all
three modes and got the message "test page printed to queue lp0".
I was even happier when alltests produced a perfect result.
Then I found I was unable to print from any file or application.

If I try to print a file using the printer icon or the file print
command I see: "printing:lpr '(file name)'" but nothing happens. If I
check status in /var/spool/lpd/lp0 I see "lp0 is ready and printing",
but it is not.

/etc/printcap looks like:

##PRINTOOL3## LOCAL uniprint NAxNA a4 [} U_EpsonStylusColor stc600pl 1
lp0:\
: sd=/var/spool/lpd/lp0:\
: mx#0:\
: sh:\
:lp=/dev/lp0:\
: if=/var/spool/lpd/lp0/filter

I haven't copied printfilter here but it says it's: New Smart Print
Filter.

/var/spool/lpd/lp0/postscript.cfg reads (initial text omitted):

GSDEVICE=uniprint
RESOLUTION=NAxNA
COLOR=stc600pl
PAPERSIZE=a4
EXTRA_GS_OPTIONS=""
REVERSE_ORDER=
PS_SENDEOF=NO

#
#following is related to printing multiple pages per output page
#
NUP=1
RTLFTMAR=18
TOPBOTMAR=18

(I have told printtool to send an EOF message)

/var/spool/lpd/lp0/general.cfg reads:

export DESIRED_TO=ps
export PAPERSIZE=a4
export PRINTER_TYPE=LOCAL
export ASCII_TO_PS=NO

/var/spool/lpd/lp0/textonly.cfg reads:
TEXTONLYOPTIONS=
CRLFTRANS=1
TEXT_SEND_EOF=YES

If I try to print from Netscape I use:

Print to Printer, and get:

Error message: Netscape sub process diagnostics
lpr:lp:unknown printer

(In Australia we use a4 paper; I have manually inserted file texts in
abbreviated form.)

Sorry for this long post. Does anyone know how to get my system to
print? I hope someone does. Why should it be so difficult? Linux will
never fly if, as in my case, essential tasks can only be done in
Windows.

Thanks in advance.
