Re: [newbie] Laptop hp ze4325us boot freeze solved on 10.1 community (acpi) and wlan--Thanks to all

2004-11-12 Thread Pat Patterson
A big thank you to all who helped me. I am sitting in my Lazyboy sending this
from a linux box that for the first time since Mandrake 7.2 does everything I
want it to do.

I am going to enjoy this for a few weeks and then when I get 10.1 Official I
will try breaking it by building a kernel with ACPI support and getting the
built in ACX100 driver to work. I am currently using the Linuxant package
and it works quite well and was easy to install.

What Sat service are you using? If it is directway, they have a thing called
FAP that limits you to about 150 MB down load at full speed and then slows to
a crawl. Most other sats have similar policies. I put up with this for years
until I got DSL. If this is the case, the least frustrating solution is to
order a se of disks from cheap bites or some other site that will ship them
for a minimal charge. Check the fine print at your providers site or give
them a call.

Sounds similar to my Compaq 2100's issues. I was able to setup/load
a
custom DSDT, which solved the ACPI and related problems. (Although
prism54 still doesn't work as I hit the usual, mfg changed internals
but kept the same product number. Ndiswrapper works for me, from
sourceforge.)

[newbie] Laptop hp ze4325us boot freeze solved on 10.1 community (acpi)

2004-11-07 Thread Pat Patterson
This did not seem to go through the first time.

Fixed this and thought I would report it here and in twiki.

HP ze4325us Athlon chip, Ali chipset, Radeon video. UNknown
motherboard.

This machine installed 10.0 great. Under 10.1 installs and freezes on

reboot. I tried noapic noalpic noacpi nodma and none worked. What
works is:

linux acpi=off

Once it boots add acpi=off to lilo.

After I got it working I did a clean install. I found out that if you
scroll down when you get to the final setup screen there is an entry
for boot. Unchecking the acpi enabled button, solves the problem.

Still cannot get a wireless card to work. It is recognized but does
not seem to come on. I wi ask question after I have tried a few
things but if anyone has any words of wisdom they will be welcome :-)
Does anyone know if having acpi of effects wireless?

You need the proprietary firmware for your card from your Windows CD
This HOWTO should help you
http://www.houseofcraig.net/acx100_howto.php

Firmware usually goes in /lib/hotplug/firmware in Mandrake although
the HOWTO mentions a different location.

 Hi Pat

How far have you gotten with the card so far?
Hi Kevin,
Last night I got the dwl 120 e configured with minimal problems. I should have
worked but it did not. This evening I did a little more research and
discovered that the atmel module does not work in the 2.6 kernel. I switched
to the 2.4 and it came right up. I found a patch for 2.6 which I will apply
as soon as I figure out how to apply a patch ;-) This at least gets me out of
my office and into my Lazy-Boy to do email and news groups even if I have to
drag a USB adapter with me. I am a happy camper. On to printing, samba, but
for now I have my first totally usable Mandrake machine since I started
playing wth 7.2 Hurrah!!! I will go back to the DWL g650 card once I have
stopped gloating and have actully gotten a full weeks worth of real work done
under Mandrake.
Thanks for the help,

[newbie] Wireless Lan on 10.0

2004-07-12 Thread Pat Patterson
I have installed 10.0 on my hp ze4325us laptop and the basic install was
great. Video, sound, wired lan all working out of the box. I have not messed
with samba or printing yet but I am working on getting DWLG650 card to work.

I have found and ollowed several howtos and managed to update the kernel and
install the modules. I have created the network script and have added alias
ath0 ath_pci to modules.conf and modprobe.

During startup I get the message the Ath0_pci cannot find the hardware.
ineither ifconfig or iwconfig show the ath0.

dmesg give me the following:
ath_hal: no version for struct_module found: kernel tainted.
ath_hal: module license 'Proprietary' taints kernel.
ath_hal: No versions for exported symbols. Tainting kernel.
ath_hal: 0.9.5.3 BETA (Sam Leffler [EMAIL PROTECTED])
wlan: No versions for exported symbols. Tainting kernel.
wlan: 0.7.1.1 BETA (Sam Leffler [EMAIL PROTECTED])
ath_pci: 0.8.3.2 BETA (Sam Leffler [EMAIL PROTECTED])
PCI: Enabling device :02:00.0 ( - 0002)
ath_pci: cache line size not set; forcing 8
ath%d: unable to attach hardware; HAL status 13

Can anyone point me to what to do next?

Is there a wireless G card out there that you can just pop in and go?

Thanks,

Pat Patterson

not even mentioned for Mandrake 9.2, so upgrading wouldn't help I'm

I hAD the same situation few months ago. installed the 3com drivers
and all seemed well. Then had many strange problems trying to enable
samba and network printing. Found the drivers sort of work but not
totally. Like Tom I tossed in a dlink and the problems disappeared.

While conducting my very first search for an SMBCLIENT problem I have been
trying to solve for several months I discovered my own posting from

his response since some how I got booted off the group for about a week. I

hope that Derek and anyone else will be able to help since I have not been

Once again thanks Kaj, Derek, and all of you who contribute. I have found
that for the most part by being an avid lurker most of my question get
answered over time.
