yeah, this happens to me as well. update frequently quits instead of
finishing the install. just become root, go to the /tmp directory, and
your downloaded rpms are there. for each one do rpm -Uvh file.rpm to
get it to work.

[newbie] losing memory

hi, i have been checking my memory usage lately. i am curious about my
memory consumption right after boot. the first thing i do is log in a

one of two things tends to come up:

**mem condition 1:
 total used free sharedbuffers
cached
Mem: 63056 28552 34504 8448 2480

6436
-/+ buffers/cache: 10132 52924
Swap: 104384144 104240

condition one seems really bad as nearly half my memory is gone before i
have even done anything. condition two is even worse. why the huge
consumption? and why do two different boots use two radically different
amounts of memory.

if i do 'ps aux' on either of these conditions, then i always get
similar results.

  I've got a Stealth 3D 4000 also. Mine's got 4MB RAM, is AGP, and I get
noise on 1152x864, 24bpp- not lower. I believe it has to do with the
refresh rates that the card supports. You might try manually tweaking
modelines in /etc/X11/XF86Config. I mean to do this eventually, but
haven't gotten around to it yet. Other than this, I don't know how
to fix it. I'd suggest learning to live with it, or stick to a lower
  resolution/color depth.

yup, ive got the same card. what exactly do you mean by tweaking? what
do i tweak? i intend to figure this out because i really cant stand
that noise! if i find that it is unfixable, then i will consider
 getting another card.
please give me details on what i should change about the modelines.

well, i figured it out. my monitor has an onscreen menu for making
settings. it also shows the current hsync and vsync. i looked at it
while running the noisy x. i then booted into windows and compared the
values. they were very different! so i edited XF86Config and commented
out the modeline that was causing the noise. i then ran x and there was
less noise than before. after a few more '#', i finally found a
modeline that boots up perfectly and gives no noise. my screen looks
better than ever! even better than it looked in windows! give this
method a shot and i am sure it will help your problems too.

balancing programs to use for linux? i am used to ms word, so i would
like something that has comparable features. also, i tried to run cbb
(checkbook balancer) that comes with mandrake 6.0, but it wont run and
gives lots of errors.

[newbie] AWE64 problems

1999-08-16 Thread pete moss

i have mandrake 6.0 and and awe64 gold soundblaster. i am having
problems getting sound. i only get souind under two conditions. first
is when kde does its system sounds (startup, shutdown, etc.). second is
when i run
'cat blah.au /dev/audio'. any programs such as x11amp or the kde
media player act like they are sending otu sound, but i dont hear
anything.
i cant run sndconfig, because it overwrites my isapnp.conf with a
default version that crashes with my modem. does anyone know what else
sndconfig does other than write a isapnp.conf file? i may have to set
this up by hand so that my soundcard will work.
anyone got any tips? i am a computer musician and i _really_ need to
get this thing to make sound. i had it working with rh 5.2, so i know
this is possible.

Re: [newbie] arrgh vfat and msdos unknown?

 ok, one last side-question:
of the FAT16 and FAT32 file systems, which is superior in file
read/write/transfer speed and efficiency? I purposely created another 2
gig FAT16 partition (faster than a 13 gig FAT32 partition) to hold all
the stuff I want to host with linux. I'm under the impression that the
smaller a partition is the faster and more efficient it becomes, and I
feel this would be very important if I'm hosting and files are
constantly being created/written/removed. please correct me if I'm
 wrong.

if your windows can handle fat32 (win95b and up) then you should
probably use it. it offers many enhancements over fat16, and is
supposed to run faster. plus linux can read it as 'vfat' so you dont
have to worry about settings up a fat16 partition.

However, I continue to be unable to launch 'startx". I consistently
 get an error:

  I128: ibm526 Ramdac not found

I have run though xf86config with many different combinations. I was
able to get confirmed numbers on the vert/horz scan... on my monitor
so feel pretty good about that. Do you have any suggestions for how I
 can proceed?

a ramdac is something to do with your video card. i guess that means
that your card or the drivers are having trouble. when you do
xf86config, and go into the card def stage, be sure you select your
video chip set, and NOT the card name you are using. look in your cards
manual for the chip set that it uses, and find that in the list. for
instance, i have a diamond stealth 3D 4000, but when i set it up i just
use generic s3 virge gx2 chipset with 4 meg memory, and it all works
fine. just follow its instructions for what xserver to use, and also if
you should probe clocks and such.
let me how that works.

I'd love to, except I don't know how! Well that, and I intend to install it
on machines other than the machine I downloaded it with. Right now I just
have the one machine, but soon I'll jave one other neworked to it.

If there is a way to install while I download, however, that sounds like a
good idea - I could just wait till I get the other machine and do it then.

I've actually been meaning to post to this list, asking "Okay, I've
downloaded - NOW what do I do?" But I haven't read enough on Mandrake's
 site to warrant a posting.

if you are going to use it on multiple machines and you have a cdr, then
d/l the ISO image file of the distro and burn that to cd. then you can
install from that. gotta have a cdr though.

A question I have is can i setup a symbolic link to run startx -- -bpp 32

 and if so how?

Freedom means defending the expression of the very

i do this same thing by using an alias in my .bashrc file. edit .bashrc
to include this line:
alias xwin='startx -- -bpp 32'
then logout and login and it will work. just, before you do this, make
sure the 'xwin' command doesnt activate another program.

Everything seemed to be geared towards an assumed display resolution of
around 75dpi. This seems pretty old-fashioned, given that most monitors and
video cards can support better resolutions. Even with a 2MB video card and
a 15-inch monitor you can get 1024x768 at 16 bpp, so a lot of people must be
wanting to work at around 100 dpi these days.

I have written a brief explanation of how to configure Mandrake for 100 dpi
 resolution at:

[newbie] noise in 24 bit color

1999-08-15 Thread pete moss

when i run x windows in 24 bit color mode, i get horizontal lines of
noise on the screen whenever i move a window or something on the
screen. i have a diamond stealth 3d 4000 card with a s3 virge gx2
chipset. i am running the svga xserver. my card works fine at that
depth, looks good in x windows (aside from the noise) and worked fine in
MS windows. anyone have any tips or ideas on how to fix it? it doesnt
do this in lower color depths, or at screen res lower than 1024x768.
does anyone have a similar card or chipset that might know how to fix
the problem?

:P

also, why does the buttons in netscape go grayscale when i do -bpp 24,
but they are color at other times?

i am a music composition and electronic music grad student. i got into
linux because of the stereotypical MS windows hatred. i think it is
great, but i wouldnt recommend it to the average joe. i worked for
flashnet tech support for a while, and i definately wouldnt recommend it
to most of the users calling up with computer trouble.
now, if only i could get my soundcard to work

 I've got a Stealth 3D 4000 also. Mine's got 4MB RAM, is AGP, and I get
noise on 1152x864, 24bpp- not lower. I believe it has to do with the
refresh rates that the card supports. You might try manually tweaking
modelines in /etc/X11/XF86Config. I mean to do this eventually, but
haven't gotten around to it yet. Other than this, I don't know how
to fix it. I'd suggest learning to live with it, or stick to a lower
 resolution/color depth.

yup, ive got the same card. what exactly do you mean by tweaking? what
do i tweak? i intend to figure this out because i really cant stand
that noise! if i find that it is unfixable, then i will consider
getting another card.
please give me details on what i should change about the modelines.

also, why does the buttons in netscape go grayscale when i do -bpp 24,

Because of a bug in Netscape.

any idea on a workaround to this? will this ever be fixed? i had this
same problem on an older version. sad to see it hasnt changed.

[newbie] two problems

1999-08-14 Thread pete moss

i just got mandrake v 6.0 installed yesterday. i have been setting it
up for quite a while now. i have two problems that havent been able to
fix.

first the (hopefully) easy one:
i am running kde and the mouse resets to slow speed whenever i come back
into it. i set the speed in the control center in every session, but it
always goes back to the defaults. any tips? is gpm affecting this.
the default mouse setting is way to slow to use, so i must set it
everytime.

next, the more difficult problem:
i am getting no sound out of my sound card. i have a AWE64 gold
soundblaster.
i have the isapnp.conf set correctly with the card on irq 9. all the
modules on boot up load properly with no errors. i did a dmesg to see
what might be happening that i missed. here is the relevant section:

---
Soundblaster audio driver Copyright (C) by Hannu Savolainen 1993-1996
SB 4.16 detected OK (220)
sb: Interrupt test on IRQ5 failed - Probable IRQ conflict
SoundBlaster EMU8000 (RAM4096k)
---

it says it tries irq 5, but my card isnt on 5, it is on 9. i havent
been able to find what this driver is or what config it uses. i would
like to change its config to irq9, and i bet that will fix my problem.

any ideas on how to fix this?

:P

 /usr/sbin/sndconfig

that wont do it for me because it always tries to write a new
isapnp.conf file and the default that it writes crashes because of my
modem. i had to hand configure the modem to make it work. besides, i
found part of my problem. conf.modules contains the settings for the sb
audio driver. i set it to 9 and now i get sound out kde sound control
panel. unfortunately no other apps give me any sound. kmpg says it
cant open the audiodevice when i play a sound out of
/usr/share/sounds/ i am a bit confused why one part of software can
play sound, but all other cant. is the more setup i need to do? anyone
got any great ideas?

btw, now kde is keeping my mouse settings. odd.
