Weren't they the double-density ones? I seem to remember 360k in the heady
days of my first floppy drive - before that it was stretch audio tape. Of
course my Spectrum had 48k RAM, whereas my first computer, ZX81 had 1k on
board and 4k on an add-on pack that had to be strapped up with insultating
tape to stop it wobbling and whiting everything out.

Actually it came with the 180k, which I replaced with 360k, then the 720k. I
think the 720 was dd.

If you are a gmail user having problems with the gmail reply-to
settings, do the following:

1) Go to your Gmail settings

2) Select the other reply-to radio button (the one with the entry box)

3) Type into the reply-to entry box (in other words Less-then
followed by a Greater-then sign).

Important: If you leave the box empty it is not going to work. You have
to type in the box!

This should eliminate the reply-to header and mailing list replies will
now go to the list as they should.

I find it really odd that a Mac user would send a document in any troff
like format. troff (text runoff) is an early Unix documentation facility
comprising a few related programs. One would basically edit the document
with an editor and then use any of a number of roff programs to runoff'
a printed copy, hence the name.

What you're looking for is groff (gnu's version) which would include a
number of packages for the various components. Chances are these are
already installed, since it's used a lot for man pages which are
written in that format. Also handy would be something to view postscript
output, such as gv.

Normally something like:

$ groff -T ps filename | lpr would print one of these documents out.

Supposed to be released on the 6th, but they have not hit a date yet so it
will be soon after.Cooker is the incubator that they develop the next OS
release. It is very much cutting edge and could as easy as not have bugs in
individual packages. Once they decide that all of the packages that are going
to go in the next release have been decided on then the developers start
concentrating on bugs. A good stable release will evolve after about the 2nd
or third update in my experience and that may be 2 to 5 weeks after the
official release. ( opinion expressed here is not necessarily based on
scientific fact or analysis, It is just a opion.) HTH

Actually, from what I read, it is not Adobe that is doing this. A third party
has written an app to use a feature of Acrobat 7 (the ability to run
Javascript within the document) so that the IP address of whomever is opening
the *.pdf can be logged. I'm not certain that Adobe will take kindly to
this twisting of what was probably good intentions. In effect, it has turned
a feature into a bug in Acrobat Reader, in the mind of many people.
Those of us on dial-up, and those with a dynamic IP wouldn't care, but users
with a static IP should be at least a little bit pissed. Before we condemn
Adobe, lets wait and see how this plays out (and maybe some will want to
disable Java in the Reader and install the perl script to stop the nagging).
Also, does anyone know of any site, anywhere, using this? Maybe, just
boycotting those sites would be effective. Time will tell.

The instructions from easyurpmi set up your sources. You then need to use
urpmi or Software Installer to do the updates - either way you will see it
happening.

If you haven't installed slocate, do so. ISTR that you also have to add
yourself to the slocate group (userdrake, to do that). Then, from a console
you can type
slocate packagename
and you will see all the packages with that name in - including the docs - so
you will see which version you have installed.

There are probably other ways, but this is the way that I check things.

Robert Yu wrote:

You can download the packages using ftp or something similar, and then,
when they are all sitting in a directory, call up a root shell and go to
the directory and type the following:

genhdlist --dest `pwd`
If you get errors, then type the following in order to ignore corrupted
archives:

genhdlist --nobadrpm --dest `pwd`
Then, when it has completed, run Mandrake Control Centre and go to media
manager and set up the directory as a source.

It works for me. I just ignore the whining about checksums and click on
yes and then the stuff installs straight from rpmdrake.
urpmi should pick it up too, although I usually use the GUII tool for
this one.

cheers
Duncan

[newbie] SMC Barricade

2005-04-01 Thread Mr. Geek
Well, here's another weird one for the list. I recently bought a Linksys
Wireless card and it's working quite well, but of course, there's one
little problem.
The card is unable to receive packets from the SMC router. I've tried it
with and without DHCP, and with or without WEP. The SMC Barricade is an
11Mbps, 3-Port router with a print-server (not in use for now).

I am able to get an IP address for the Linksys card from the router
(Model # SMC7004AWBR), and KNemo shows that the card is sending packets
to the router and that there's a connection at the proper speed, but the
card is not receiving from the router.

Just to simplify this, the problem doesn't seem related to Linux or
Windows, since I'm getting the same problem in either OS.

Meanwhile, my wired connection from the same system works fine. Wireless
networking was working fine on the router the last time it was in use,
even though an occasional reboot of the router was required.

I've tried it before and after updating the firmware, and I've reset the
router to default settings about 35 times, and still 'No Joy'! Even
using the default settings, my wired connection is fine and the wireless
card is getting an IP address from the router. But the wireless card
can't successfully ping the router.

If anyone has had any previous experience with this unit, I'd appreciate
any suggestions they might have. I have yet to take my laptop out to
another wireless zone to see if it connects and that's probably next on
my list of things to try, but hopefully, there's something I'm missing.

Personally, I suspect that the problem is due to the RTS/CTS
Fragmentation settings, but there doesn't seem to be a way to change
them in the router and I can't find the spec's for them on Google or at SMC.

Thanks for any help that you can provide

You can indeed. However, commercial dvds are encoded, and thanks to the legal
implications Mandrake cannot give you the packages you need. PLF supply
Mandrake packages to deal with this situation. So -

1) Go to easyurpmi.zarb.org and follow the instructions there to make sure you
have a plf source - while you are there it would pay you to grab one source
from each of the sections listed. A long chain of commands will be given to
you to paste into a root console. It does take a while for that to complete,
so be patient until it has finished. Using urpmi from the command line or
Software Installer as a gui will now give you a whole raft of possibilities
you didn't have before.

2) If you have xine installed, uninstall it.

3) Get the xine packages from the plf site - if you use Software Installer
make sure you have enabled Maximum Information. You also need decss and any
codecs you can find, to give you maximum flexibility. Install them in the
usual way and you should be fine.

2005-04-01 Thread Joe Mecklin
gee, i wonder how he really feels? he shouldn't be so reluctant to
voice his opinions; he leaves so much in doubt about his true
emotions.

on a more serious note, it might be interesting to know his actual
reasons for his opinion; perhaps he'll enlighten us, though i get the
impression he merely wanted to vent without looking for knowledge/help
to fix the real/perceived problems.

oh well.

Fragmentation settings, but there doesn't seem to be a way to change
them in the router and I can't find the spec's for them on Google or at
SMC.

Thanks for any help that you can provide

I do not have a dvd player, but I have heard that it is possible to

  please give me some directions?

Thanks, Anne and Ian.

Hi Mikkel. This card is brand new. It might be defective and I'm going

The first step would be to install the synce package. You may also want
to take a look at:

http://synce.sourceforge.net/synce/
and
http://synce.sourceforge.net/synce/kde/
This will get you started anyway. From what I have seen, syncing with
PocketPCs is still in the early stages. It isn't to nearly as good as
the syncing to Palm devices.

RE: [newbie] back to Windows

2005-04-01 Thread h k ball
... very entertaining, I was taken in totally, because as a month old
newbie I went through that phase ... bought some Mandrake 10.1 disks ($6),
they worked OK at first, but then degraded ... ended up with:

(1) .. an old Mandrake Red Hat 6.0 that works on my desktop ..

(2) .. a SUSE 9.2 working in VMWare on my laptop ... ended up downloading
the 3.3gig .iso file, turns out VMWare can read the .iso file right off my
hard drive, don't have to fool with burning CD's etc ..

(3) ... the struggle getting from command mode to KDE in (1) above really
taught me the Linux (UNIX) fundamentals, plus reading your wonderful
mailing list each day ...

(4) .. once you get into KDE, everything's a breeze ...

Adding what is perhaps its most significant member to date, the Open

sweeping intellectual property agreement this week.

OSDL said that after several hours of intense negotiations,
officials of the center of gravity for Linux and open source had

the membership of a proprietary software maker in an open source

The first step would be to install the synce package. You may also want
 to take a look at:

 and

This will get you started anyway. From what I have seen, syncing with

 the syncing to Palm devices.

That definitely seems to be the place to start. I can connect to the

and I'll be in business!

No - the 700Mb is more then big enough to burn a 699.8 MB image. The
700MB (80 minute) CDs hold 700Mb of data, plue the lead in and lead out
data.

Now, how are you trying to burn the CD under k3b? If you are trying to
burn an ISO omage that you have downloaded, you need to pick tools, CD,
Burn CD image. Now, I have heard that you can also run into problems
burning CDs with k3b as a user if you haven't gone through the
configuration first - you have to set some parmissions and it will ask
you for the root password to do it...

 [EMAIL PROTECTED]

DrWeb is a commercial application to search for Windows viruses on a Linux
mailserver.
Mandrake Soft include an RPM package for Drweb on the Commercial CD of the
Mandrake Powerpack boxed set.
If you have a Powerpack you will find the rpm package on disc 4. Just click on
the rpm package with konqueror and it will install.
Also on the CDs are drweb mail filter packages for the various mail servers,
Sendmail,Postfix, Courier etc. You should install the appropriate mail filter
package for the mail server you are running.

If you do not have a Powerpack then the drweb packages can be downloaded from
MandrakeClub if you are a member or directly from the DrWeb download site at
http://download.drweb.com/unix/Mandrake+Linux+10/ clicking on the rpm packages
with konqueror will install them.

However you get the packages drweb will not work until you have purchased a
key from them.

As for your other questions. Mandrake Expert allows you to ask 'paid for'
questions, or 'no charge' community questions where you may (or may not) get
an answer from any member of the Mandrake Community. In any case you are not
likely to get an answer from Mandrake Expert about DrWeb since it is not a
Mandrake product and not part of the official distro.

MandrakeOnline is an entirely separate service to provide you with warning of
available security updates.

Once you have Dr Web installed I doubt if you will see an icon or menu entry
because it is a 'daemon' that runs in background in conjunction with a mail
server. I expect if you open MandrakeControlCentreSystemServices you would
see a button to start the DrWeb service.

I assume you know that there are effectively no Linux viruses, so the only
point of using a virus scanner on Linux is to protect Windows users who fetch
their mail from a Linux mailserver.

There are other virus scanners available for Linux mailservers such as ClamAV
which are open source and totally free.

[JDOW] Rumor has it that this ancient Roman (and perhaps earlier)

Where do you think the Brazilians came from? Rome had been there.
Etruscans had been there. Phoenicians had been there. Egyptians had been
there. The Atlanteans had been there, the Polynesians had been there.

Needless to say, though, I have inside information that Josenildo
