Re: [newbie] mandrake 6.0 with pentium II, Apache Server, Oracle 8i

2000-03-06 Thread Mandrake Account

By default root cannot login remotely. It is not suggested to do this as
it is a security risk. This can be gotten around if you really need to do
it by editing /etc/securetty file.

As for the problem with X windows, not sure what is causing that as I have
the graphic log in and have no problems login in as root.

It's becuase you set the security to high somewhere during the installation.
I'm still trying to figure out how to log in as root too other than SU.
I did notice that draksec allows you to change the security level and calls
upon some script. However, I would like to learn how to do it manually.

Anybody???
Thanks!

Hello,

without losing the current 6.0 installation in case the 7.0

but it is a secondary partition, and it is located at the far
end of the hard disk, so I guess not bootable ?)

at this point, typing "startx" without the quotes shold get you in
windows, if that fails, type "xf86config" and setup your x information.
Remember, you're in Unix now, things are case sensitive. ALSO, you can
type "startx -- -bpp 16" to load in 16 bit more or you can also do 24 and
32 bits.

linux is installed on your computer, what your doing is logging in on the

Congratulations! Apparently you have gotten a good install (so
far). What you are seeing is a command prompt, similar to the
msdos prompt you may be familiar w/ in M$ land. You really need
to get a beginners book, like Linux in a Nutshell, or Running
Linux 3rd Ed from O'Reilly Associates. But in the meantime, try
the following:

'startx' should start your X Window session i.e. gui desktop,
assuming it was configured properly during install. If not, well,
you are about to have a much rougher intro to linux. If you did
get a decent desktop to come up, click on an icon that looks like
a computer monitor, and you will be in a terminal (like an M$-DOS
window), and continue.

'cd /usr/doc/howto/' , then 'dir' or 'ls | less' and press
'Space' after you are done reading each screenfull. This is a
listing of all the HOWTO files on your system. They may be
archived w/ a *gz extension, so log in as root, then return to
the same directory and type 'gunzip -r *', which will recursively
unpack everything at and below this directory. Then type 'emacs
Unix-Internet-Fundamentals-HOWTO' and read it _all_. If you get
tired and want to quit emacs, try Control-x Control-c. Then read
'DOS-Win-to-Linux-HOWTO', and if by now you are feeling a little
more comfortable, good. Next time you fire up emacs, type
'Control-h t' for a tutorial on emacs. Granted we put the cart
befor the horse here, but you didn't need to know much about
emacs to get this far. Alternately, you could use emacs to read
the Emacs-Beginner-HOWTO.

Note that none of this requires a graphic desktop. It all works
just fine w/o . If you find emacs to be too much, try 'vi
/usr/doc/HOWTO/Vim-HOWTO' to try the vi editor.

Enjoy,

Monte Milanuk

[newbie] Mandrake 6.0 -- Disk Druid Hang-Up

2000-01-19 Thread Valued Customer

Disk Druid won't let me install a swap partition (of any size), for no
reason that I can figure out.

When I try to "Add" the swap partition, I get an error: not enough room on
the partition (63 ??). I am installing the swap partitian on a 2nd hard
disk (1 GIG; slave) - hdb1 - that has WIN98 on it currently. (I intend to
wipe out '98.)

Oddly, Disk Druid allows me to install the root partition no problem.

I don't want to use the Mandrake included fdisk utility because the hard
disk in question is not the master, and the install notes warns against this
explicitly.

Maybe the o/s managing program (phytechsoft multiple o/s manager) I have
installed that is screwing up Disk Druid - but I doubt it.

Any suggestions?

I have been noticing a strange behaviour of the X-windows since the

Dear John:

What he's saying is CD drives are more particular
about the system trying to access them using DMA/UDMA
(another way to access an "IDE" device) than hard drives
when they don't support that method of accessing the drive.

Thanks for the feeaback. Does this mean that the HP CD-R/RW 8200i drive
I have is incompatible with the Mandrake 6.0 kernel I am using to boot up?

C: Try it with a recent mirror of Cooker

"Cooker" is the pre-release version of Mandrake. Think of

Where do I get this version? Also, where can I get alternate custom boot
kernels?

   Thanks,

Don't be so offended. I just was stating the fact that from my peronal experience, I
had no problems with RedHat as opposed to Mandrake.

Given my current time constraints is was simply less time consuming to try a different

Re: [newbie] Mandrake 6.0 Install Problems

1999-08-24 Thread Gabriel Fernández

Hi there:

Sorry, I'm a busy person I'm sure you can understand.

Nothing personal. Just frustrated that my message started a list of
messages not related to my question. ;-)

I appreciate all the help that I can get.

VFS: mounted root (ext2 filesystem)
hdb: lost interrupt
hdb: drive_cmd: status=0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
 status error: status 0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
hdb: drive not ready for command
VFS: Disk change detected on device ide1 (22,0)

hdc: lost interrupt:
hdc: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason=0x1)
hdc: lost interrupt:
hdc: cdrom_pc_intr: The drive appears confused (ireason=0x1)
...

There's some bad logic in the code that desides which drives to enable DMA
cdroms are less tolerant than hardrives when you try and activate it and
they do not support it.

I am confused by this statement. I think I understand the kernel does
not support the particular CD-ROM that I have and that's the reason for the
errors. However, below is the output from the kernel indicating that the
CD-ROM drive was recognized. It does not say the brand, but the description
is right on the money (HP CD-Writer Plus 8200i, 4X/4X/24X).

Pentium 75MHz
64MB RAM
ide0 @ 0x1f0-0x1f7, 0x3f6 on irq 14
ide1 @ 0x170-0x177, 0x376 on irq 15 (serialized with ide0)
hda: Conner Peripherals 1275MB - CFA1275A,
 1220MB w/256KB Cahce, CHS=619/64/63
hdb: Maxtor 72004 AP,
 1916MB w/128KB Cache, CHS=973/64/63
hdc: ATAPI 24X CD-ROM DVD-RAM CD-R/RW drive, 2048KB Cache
Partition check:
hda: hda1, hda2, hda3
hdb: hdb1, hdb2

   These are your suggestions:

A: Swap the cdrom out for something "with less additude"

I do not have another CD-ROM. I actually want to use my CD-R/RW drive
under Linux. Also, I do not know what you mean by "less additude".

B: Find HD space and install it from there

If I keep the CD-R/RW unit installed, this won't make any difference. I
won't be able to finish the boot up.

C: Try it with a recent mirror of Cooker

I have no idea what this means. Could you please elaborate?

D: Ask me for custom boot disks and i'll see if i can find time

Please consider the request made. Could you be so kind to provide me
with a boot disk/image that I can use to install the software?

BTW, I just learned that there were several Mandrake "releases". I am
using the one provided by MacMillan (The Complete Linux OS 6.0).

   Thanks,

Gabriel

Hi Sebastian:

Thanks for your input. Actually, I have errors by the time the kernel is
trying to mount the filesystems. The only choice I have made so far is to

I used the Mandrake-Macmillan Linux and managed to install though it
is my first time. Maybe just good luck.

Anyway, I probably took the wrong turn somewhere. I seems to have
reinitialised my entire harddisk and now my Windows 95 partition is
missing. Lucky for me this is a test machine. But I recognise that it
is due to my fault in not reading the instructions properly and not
following the prompts properly. Now I must learn how to recover back
  my Windows partition.

Better luck to you with the new distribution.

Actually I've tried both the Mandrake and RedHat 6.0 installs and they
 do
the exact same thing and hang in the same place. Plus I wouldn't
think
 that
pentium optimizations would cause a hang on the install before
anything
   really happens.

What kind of a processor _do_ you have? If you don't have a Pentium,
what is it supposed to do when it received an unrecognized opcode? Some
processors just stop working. Others call some bad-opcode-handler
interrupt. Even if your processor calls an exception interrupt, the
setup may not have made it do anything besides hang the computer.

I am using a 486DX2/66 for this. I have read all the Mandrake and RedHat
documentation/hardware compatibility lists and they both say that anything
Intel above a i386 are fully supported. Although on another list,
Mandrake

should not/could not claim to support the older processors like they do in
 their documentation.

As far as other hardware related issues, since I'm already running RedHat

You SHOULD be able to install from a RedHat 6.0 CD, as that is still (AFAIK)
compiled with 386+ in mind, not Pentium+ in mind. Mandrake, on the other
hand, is (currently) designed for Pentium+ with the default kernels.

Colin - You'll probably get quite a few replies,
but in any case, the Mandrake 6.0 linux is one
of those that is compiled to run on a Pentium chip.
You won't get it working correctly on a 486. The
earlier Mandrake 5.3 however, should work correctly.
I've loaded it on a 486dx2/66, and had it up and
running without problems.

If you read that Mandrake works on anything below a Pentium-class CPU, then it
either wasn't for M6 or it needs to be updated. ALL (or at least most--I don't
know if they compiled Netscape's source code themselves) the Mandrake packages
are compiled with Pentium optimizations, so there wouldn't really be any point
in having a kernel compiled for 386, for Mandrake.

I have no idea why RedHat would give you problems. Maybe there is something
about the newer RedHat/Mandrake installation disks that causes problems
with your hardware. If you're making the boot disks yourself from images, are
you using rawrite in DOS, or dd from an already set up Linux installation? dd
seems more reliable than rawrite. If you don't have an existing Linux
installation, you can make a root/boot disk (there's one on M6 CD and should be
one on RH6 CD too I think), boot from it, and then use dd to make an
installation boot disk.

If THAT doesn't work I'd try starting the installation with a boot disk from an
older version of RedHat.

And if that doesn't work, I'd try either Mandrake 5.3, Redhat 5.2 (if you can
still get them) or another distro..

There could be subtle corruptions with your hardware that show up under certain
conditions but not under others. (And it seems a lot of people have had that
kind of trouble with Mandrake in particular.)

[newbie] Mandrake 6.0 install continually hangs

1999-08-01 Thread Colin Eddy

I currently am running RedHat 5.0 on my old 486 and would like to install
either Mandrake 6.0. Unfortunately no matter what I've tried, the install
continually hangs in the same places (depending on the method). I have
tried both and FTP and HD install.

I made disks of both the boot and bootnet images(HD and FTP installs) and
tried installing. I get all the way through the TCP/IP setup or the SCSI
setup and it starts to load the first things. It gets the base/stage2.img
just fine and does the download of the second stage ramdisk (watch the
lights on the ethernet card flash and stop or HD light), but then it just
hangs on this window and won't continue.

I've also done this with both the regular and updated disk images.

Is there a reason why a machine that could run RedHat 5.0 can't run Mandrake
6.0? If this is the problem why would it be hanging in this place? I don't
even get to the point where it wants to know if it's a full install or
update.

It seems like I'm having some sort of transitioning difficulties. If anyone
has run into this problem or has ideas on how to get this worked out, I'd
really appreciate it.

items 1 2 mentioned in post of 5/31 6:28PM, I always checked for bad
blocks.

Martin, unfortunately, memory is the one thing that I cannot check at this

with everything else that I throw at it, just not L-M 6.0.

Ben, CD is an older atapi-compliant 6x Creative, again works just fine
except with L-M 6.0.

I really appreciate all of the suggestions that I am receiving. I am not
dismissing anything at this point, it's just that I am unable to
test/replace some of the components (!$).

I noted that Bernhard posted that there was a newer version of the ISO
available, but I have been unable to locate any other than the 990527
version on the dozen or so FTP sites that I've checked.

As a recap to those who might have forgotten: I have installed and/or
upgraded with the same components - RH 5.1, RH 5.2, L-M 5.3, RH (rawhide)
5.9, and RH 6.0. I have even compiled a couple of kernels. I won't argue
the possibility (probability??) that the failures are hardware related (note
the frequent -but not always- sig 11), but I cannot shake the feeling that
the catalyst is software related.

Again, thanks,

Greg

I successfully installed RH 5.1, then new install

upgrade to RH 6.0. My attempts to upgrade to L-M 6.0 met with abject
failure! I could not complete an upgrade past the mouse
configuration. OK, says I, No Problem!. I'll just reformat and
re-install. Turns out I was half right - I could format, but not
install.

Numerous install attempts ended with 1) failure on
mouse configuration, 2) failure on network configuration, and 3) about a dozen
"install exited abnormally - received signal 11 sending termination
signals...etc., etc." which occurred at various points in the install from
copying files to configuration menus. All upgrade/install attempts came
from any of four CDs I burned from a d/l'd ISO image (I have four because I pass
them out to friends not blessed with a cable modem and a burner).

As I write this plea, I am d/ling another ISO in
hopes that my first was somehow corrupted.

If anyone has any information or ideas, I would

[newbie] Mandrake 6.0 kernel upgrade problems

1999-05-28 Thread SalsaDoom, Lord of Cybernia

Hi all,
Umm, I just installed Venus (previously had RH6), and its pretty
smooth,
except I found a really lame thing was sadly carried over from RH6.
Normally, when
I upgrade the kernel, I tend to do it like i'm on a slackware box (where
I learned
linux =), so I simply tell lilo.conf to point to /vmlinuz for the
kernel, which RH42
- 5.2 (including all version of Mandrake up to 5.3 of course) this
works w/o a
hitch. RH6 did something where it would load /vmlinuz, but keep looking
for the
modules (and perhaps other related stuff) in the default directory (ie
/lib/modules/2.2.9-19mdk). This causes a ton of stuff to break. In RH6
this was
worked around with linuxconf, by telling it you compiled a new kernel,
it did some
stuff and it worked. I don't know why this came to pass, but it wasnt
serious.

Here is the meat of the problem, this didn't work with Mandrake, the
linuxconf
thing, so somewhere its pointing to 2.2.9-19mdk for modules, and I have
no idea
where. Anyone?

   Thanks,
SalsaDoom

Ok that sounds good can't wait! Hey whats Lothar?
 Jeanette

Lothar is something like a "Hardware Manager" for Linux. To learn more, visit:
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/lothar/

It does look very cool. Can't wait to see it in action!
Looks like our hardware setup hassles just might be over...maybe? ;-)

[newbie] Mandrake 6.0

1999-05-07 Thread Craig Burlingame

Sorry if I am repeating anything that's been asked before, but I've been without
e-mail for a few days. Anyway my question is this. When is Mandrake 6.0 coming out,
and will there be an ISO9660 image available when it does? I appreciate any
information anybody can give me in regards to this question.

What changes are they going to be? will it just be a kernel update? is it
something that is easy to update?

Probably mid to late May. May be longer if they are making serious
headway
 on Lothar.

Ripcrd6 translated his thoughts to electrons:

They are going to stay with KDE I would bet. On second thought, Lothar
won't be ready even for day-time much less prime time by the end of the
month. I looked at the pages again today and they are on ver. 0.3 or
something. Oh well. Definitely look for stuff from BeroLinux to be
integrated such as Trutype font support.
 Rip

YES!!! YES!!! Im in ecstasy!!! ("estoy extático", para los que ahora sólo
hablan Español, jeje)
Working in a magazine, Truetype fonts are a necesity ("las fuentes Trutype son
necesarias")

Do you believe its worth waiting? ("¿vale la pena esperar?")
I still havent got my Mandrake Festen copy ("aún no compro my copia de Mandrake
Festen")
... Im just learning Linux with the Redhat 5.1 included in the book I bought
last week.
("estoy aprendiendo Linux con el Redhat 5.1 que venía con el libro que compré)

I would be happy if MandrakeSoft waited until GNOME 1.1 was released.
 GNOME
1.0 behaves like buggy beta software.

It makes me appreciate the excellent job that MandrakeSoft did integrating
Red Hat 5.2 and KDE 1.1!

Yep... thats true... I WANT MY MANDRAKE (and my Lothar too!)

I've tried the default environment of Red Hat 6.0, GNOME/Enlightenment; it
is nothing that I'd wish on us newbies.
