ho installato la Mandrake 7.1 e desideravo connettermi al pc tramite ftp attraverso LAN. La macchina però rifiuta la connessione. Dopo una ricerca ho scoperto che manca il file in.ftpd, come fare ad installarlo?

Ho installato la Mandrake 7.1 (ragazzi sono entusiasta Linux è favoloso) sul mio PC AMD K6 200 Mhz - 32 M di ram - 2 hd così ripartiti: 1° hd da 1,7 GB FAT32 con installato Windows98 2° hd da 4 GB ripartito in: 2 GB fat 32 - 500 MB fat - 100MB Swap 1500 MB Linux Native. Ho installato il pacchetto RPM di Wine per poter far funzionare dei programmi che ho con Linux, ma quando lancio Wine (da terminale) mi da il seguente messagio: fixme:keyboard:X11DRV_keyboard_DetectLayout Your layout was not found!Instead using closest match (0407) for scancode mapping.Please define your layout in windows/x11drv/keyboard.c and submit themto us for inclusion into furture Wine releases.See documentation/keyboard for more information. [newbie] Linux-Mandrake Corporate Server 1.0 , Kernel panic: free list empty
A newbie to linux, used to pier to pier windows networking, I just assembled a duel Pentium tower with a G586vpm motherboard. I'm trying to install the corporate server version so I don't have to edit the kernel to split work between the processors, I know all my hardware is compatible. Installing it from the cd, while Loading the Second Stage ramdisk, it comes up with an error "kernel Panic:free list empty then code runs through the page, in red, ending in install exited abnormally -- received signal 11. [newbie] Unable to get Cable Modem Working
Hello All I know this has probably been discussed here before, but I can't find anything that helps me. I have @home with an SMC1211TX Ethernet Card. I have used the help files and set it up accordingly, using drake config. It tells me that everything is okay but will not connect. Also I have an extra drive so I clean installed Mandrake 7.1 on it and everything worked perfectly until I shut the machine off and then tried to bring it back up, it would not connect. I wiped the drive and clean installed again and it worked, but when I shut down same problem won't connect. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Bill Presho

After setting to a new resolution I had to log off/on. But when the system tries to enter the logon-screen, it starts flashing, and i can´t logon. So now I cannot log-on at all! How can I get around this problem ?

In my experience, when linux sends a "siglnal 11" it'scomplaining about a hardware failure. Are you sure you didn't forget to connect something? Or, ist it possible something was fried with an ESD? Please list the steps you took to configure the card, whether you happened to use a static IP, or have cofigured pump or dhcpcd. Try alt-ctrl-+ and/or alt-ctrl-- (use the ones on the numeric keypad) and see if you can change to a lower-resolution video mode for X. Then login and reconfigure the high resolution mode for X. It could be the monitor selection, too. I had a NEC XV17+, but selecting that one from the list never worked. I ended up selecting a generic 1024x768. Hope this helps. If defrag finds any errors during the scandisk-like mode of it (first 5%) it wouldn't let me continue. I ran scandisk before running defrag and it didn't do anything to my linux partition because I rebooted to linux to make sure it still works and it worked after scandisk was run and there were no errors in scandisk. Defrag is supposed to only defragment files within the partition, why does it go as far as wiping my linux partition and screwing up the partition table to do it? Even if I disable its check for errors and program optimizer, it ends up destroying the linux partition when run. When I try printing something from kedit it always seems to print in the same standard font size (12) . This happens even if I change the fontsize of the document. How do I get it to print in a more compressed format? The print command used by my kedit is "enscript -2rG". What do I need to change it to print in say fontsize 8? The steps I took to configure the card are as follows: Started DrakConf Clicked on Network Configuration Under Client Tasks tab, clicked on Basic host information under Host name tab input the DNS Name provided to me by @Home Under Adaptor 1 tab I set it up as follows Config mode: Manual Primary Name + Domain: my user name + subdomain address as provided by @Home No Aliases Next input the IP address Put IN Netmast, net device eht0 Kernel Module rtl8139 I/O port 0 x 1000 IRQ = 9 Next put in IP of Name Server (DNS) 1 and 2 Next went to Routing and gateways, clicked on Set and entered my Gateway IP Then Quit Quit and Activate Changes As I stated before this setup will let me connect to the cable modem and use the internet. But if I shut the computer down and then restart it I get the following: Delay eth0 initialization Failed Starting httpd: httpd:cannot determine local host name Use the ServerNameDirective to set it manually Failed I hope this will help you to figure out what is wrong and how to fix it. it may be... and it can happen,,, that your hard drive really does have a problem (hardware) in the boot sector. it may die tomorrow and it may last forever if you do (or do not for that matter) "repair" it . It's running at the moment and it took a few times round and round to get TCP/IP and PPP to work, but by God it's working. Delay eth0 initialization Failed Starting httpd: httpd:cannot determine local host name Use the ServerNameDirective to set it manually Failed The first error here usually indicates that a DHCP client failed to obtain a lease on an IP address. Are you supposed to be configured for DHCP with @home? Or, is your IP supposed to be static...If @home gave you a static IP, but (for some unknown reason) either pump or dchpcd are attemtping to get a lease from your ISP, that could be your conflict... check either top or ps-aux for one of those DHCP clients. You'll need to stop the DHCP client if your IP is static. Or, if your IP is dynamic, and pump or dhcpcd are not running, you'll need to run one (and only one) of them. The second two lines are simply the result of not having your host name listed on the appropriate DNS server, and/or not included in the /etc/hosts file along with your IP address--they really have nothing to do with accessing the internet...but they will prevent Apache from serving a web site on your machine. If you don't run a web server on your PC, you can stop the httpd service at boot and you won't get these second two lines. Ok...so I was a little rambunxious. The kernel IS running and I can connect to the net through ppp, however for some odd reason I'm unable to configure anything for ipchains. The kernel is 2.4-test9. Hello, I have just finished installing Madrake 7.1 on my laptop. An ibm 380d. Everything works well excpet 2 things. Umm... sorry to break the news to you Mark, but I think you're gonna need to recompile again! Kernel 2.4 uses something called iptables, not ipchains. It's a new version of the rules which enables true routing capabilities. The 2.4 kernel DOES, however, support ipchains...but this needs to be selected at compile time. The ipchains support does limit the iptables capabilities, though--the full routing ability is not available. I was just about to give up when I realized that it was actually starting to work. I'm a little brain-dead at the moment though as to what to do with this new type of "protocol." I've got the basic HOWTO to read through although I'd still like to use ipchains for now. I guess I'll go back to compiling for now and see if I can get the support to work for ipchains. I couldn't believe it, but I spent 6 hours total time configuring and compiling this bugger to get it to the point to where it would work. I've not had a problem with Scandisk, other than that it's necessary to run M$ OS's ;) Consider all the possible combinations of bios settings, that all motherboards aren't created equal (even from the same manufacturer, based on the same chipset), all the different harddrive schemes (even from the same manufacturer), and many other variables, including the most common... there's a whole lot of Windoze inspired junk hardware out there, specially the most popular name brand ready made crap. It's amazing to me that more Linux users don't have problems with M$ disk utilities screwing up Linux file systems. My experience has taught me, and I believe I'm in the vast majority on this, when problems like this occur they're best approached as caused by user, hardware, OS. In that order. I currently multi-boot linux, win98, win2000 pro and win 2000 server (server is for educational purpose) and there has been even more in the past. I've had only one problem with an OS corrupting another's filesystem and that was a bug in the windows 2000 mbr recovery tool. Scandisk shouldn't be any kind of problem as long as you're not trying to use it on your Linux partition (which I don't think is even possible?) Mike

Unplug (from the wall) the modem. Let it sit for about 15 seconds. 3. Plug the cable modem back in the wall. In the end of the modem should be 4 green lights. When the modem starts up the 4 lights will blink on and off - almost in a circle. 4. Allow the modem a 1 minute or so. 5. Restart your computer and reboot to Linux. Check to see what passed and/or failed 6. Log in as root. If so, try disabling the primary IDE in the BIOS (if possible--some BIOSes don'r allow this) and connect the (a) hard drive the CD-ROM to the secondary IDE controller. This very thing actually happened to my home firewall PC--the IDE controller took ill, and I wound up changing the motherboard. If you've got a pile of old, spare parts, they might be spare for a reason. Lee and I are trying to figure this out, and we both thought of the list at the same time... anyway. Basically, I have domain names (oh.. about 120) and I have IPs (Class C). If someone wants a shell account on my machine, and wants to use it for irc or whatever, I'd like the reverse DNS to work. In order to do this, I have to specify an IP address. That's easy enough. Where my problem arises is making the linux machine 'understand' who I want that IP to be assigned to. I understand how to setup the DNS (I have them all setup with win2k), and how to point it to that machine (bind it to the NIC, in this case eth0:0), what I don't understand is how do I get it such that if I login to the machine with my username 'Cloak' for instance, will it understand that its 207.188.100.99 (public IP) and not the machine IP itself. I don't know if I can make myself any more clear... I have no idea how to do this, so that's probably the source of my problems. (To give an analogy as I understand it. If you're doing IP based hosting (vs named) each user account and resulting domain is given an IP. That's basically what I'm trying to do, but I don't necessarily want the webhosting done on the linux machine yet, so no, i don't want to deal with Apache). As for the 'cool' domain name, the other alternative use we're trying to head for here is if a client has a website hosted with me, and they want to use a shell account so they can keep an IRC bot open to take questions about their business. yeah...you do have a point there. Although I have done it in the past, Pine doesn't do cut/paste very well at all. Attachments on the other hand don't seem to be too bad. Agreed, though having to open another window to figure out the filename I need to attach, followed by having to type in the path and filename isn't what I'd call a good competitor with point and click alternatives. [newbie] Crashed Fetchmail
Hi all, I was trying to set up kmail and it crashed linux. tried to reboot and got a kernel panic. I know my /home directory is still on the hdc6 partition and swap is still there but have no idea how to get back to being able to boot. I tried to do a upgrade hoping to write back the files lost, but that tells me i don't have enough room on my disk. I am using my 7.1 install on the hda disk right now. Can I access the files on the hdc disk from the hda disk? Sometimes I just amaze myself by my fearlessness in the face of my own ignorance. A little help would be appreciated. Dennis M.

So a hardware problem would be completely missed by SMART and a clean FULL format and a thorough scandisk and a defrag that results in erasing the linux partition? If your controller was acting up this could easily cause such a problem. I would love to know how a hardware error would result in only wiping out the linux partition and leaving the windows one fully intact with no errors or anything. I wasn't part of the first round of this and certainly don't want to argue with you about this. But consider that your Windows partition is the first partition on the drive. Its boot sector is at the head of the drive. Your Linux boot location is at a partition boundary. If that partition boundary isn't maintained properly, it and your Linux book code could easily get overwritten and yet not affect the operation of Windows. Unless you've got your Windows drive completely full, it's likely that you can go into your partition table and truncate your Windows partition by a few meg and it won't have any affect on the operation of Windows. Expanding it by even a little bit will destroy your access to Linux. Yet Linux can be reinstalled and work *perfectly* without *ever* crashing or generating a single error on that same partition that the windows defrag so kindly removed for me. Yep...you do a new installation, it identifies a location for the boot info, puts it there and it works...until you set some program loose that will do some writing at that partition boundary. Just a thought...have you compared the exact sizes of partitions given you by both Linux and DOS utilities? Do they agree in terms of start/end points? Cheers --- Larry

Huh? Are we talking about the same Pine here? When I attach a file to a message all I do in Pine is place the cursor beside the atrtachment header, preses CTRL T which then goes to another screen within the Pine windows already open where I can navigate to the file that I wish to attach much like a file manager screen. When I find the desired file I simply press "S" for select and the file is attached to the message. No path typing needed. Heavens! Another thing that works is setting irq too 10 and use dhcp.Downside is that you will have too either be a root, or have superuser priveledges and type dhcpcd -I (client id=C*-A) from a term but it works fine. sounds like you did everything well except to make a "boot disk" for Linux. Selected "Customized" Selected "Development" Clicked OK to a few things and it comes to the partitioning tool. I resized my 20 gig windows partition down to around 13 to 15 gigs, and clicked "Auto Allocate" and it automatically created 4 partitions.( swap, root, usr, home, or whatever order it was). I left everything selected and clicked OK when it came to the package groups I wanted ot installed. It told me that I had enough space to install 100% of it, so I just simply clicked OK and installed whatever it wants to install. It installs from one CD then asks for the 2nd Extension CD. I then insert that and installation continues. It asks if I want a local network, I say no. It asks if I want to setup my dialup, I say yes, it detects the modem, then brings up dialup info. I enter that in. It asks for a root password, I enter that and some user names and boot disk creation and the installation is done. It reboots. Boots fine to the linux partition. I reboot again, and can boot find to the windows partition. Scandisk shows no errors. After everything is working fine, if I go right into safe mode and load up defrag and let it run, I end up with an unbootable machine since grub can't read the linux partition. If I try to reinstall Linux Mandrake before using the DOS fdisk, it would say that my partition looks a little messed up (or corrupted or whatever partition) and asks me if I want to wipe it clean, I simply hit reset and boot up a win98 boot disk and use fdisk /mbr. I can boot fine but installation of mandrake would end up with that same partition thing. So If I go and boot back up on the win98 boot disk and delete the "Non-DOS" partition then reboot onto the linux mandrake CD, it can read the partition table fine and can reinstall again and if I reinstall again, and run a defrag in windows after reinstalling, I end up with yet another unbootable system. If I run scandisk, nothing happens to my linux partition, it only gets screwed with defrag. Not to imply that you did something wrong, but I've done things under assumtion on plenty of occasions that were detremental to the health of my system and sometimes I actually get lucky and learn from it. I've also talked to people who claim to have had their systems destroyed by Partition Magic, but I've used that tool A LOT and not had a problem. Sometimes it's just in one little thing that may get over looked. Mike So a hardware problem would be completely missed by SMART and a clean FULL format and a thorough scandisk and a defrag that results in erasing the linux partition? I would love to know how a hardware error would result in only wiping out the linux partition and leaving the windows one fully intact with no errors or anything. Yet Linux can be reinstalled and work *perfectly* without *ever* crashing or generating a single error on that same partition that the windows defrag so kindly removed for me.

Matt, I've seen similar messages on my system...same config... 1) It just DOESN'T work from a web browser on whatever port you try...I have long since given up 2) The VNC viewer is looking to find out what "virtual" pc to connect to ie... xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1 (this is why I believe that from the web browser it doesn't work because you also need to specify the port unlike the windows version where you just need the port.) 3) I don't know the URL of the windows vncviewer client so I have put it on my website http://www.garel.org/~brian/vncviewer.exe After you have downloaded it try using it with the following syntax: vncviewer xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1 (or whatever virtual session is active) The best way to find out what virtual session is active is by looking at your processes and grep for vnc 4) From another Linux box however you should just be able to type vncviewer xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1 (or whatever) Hope this covers it... I don't know why this would be happing, and I know that regular X runs fine. The box itself has two eth addapters, eth0 (24.221.33.28) and eth1 (10.1.1.1) used for internet access and a internal network. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks! Matt G.
