[newbie] Windows boot disk

2004-06-18 Per discussione Mark Annandale
Hi Guys

I'm trying to have a play with vmware but need to create a windows boot disk
to load XP. Unfortunately I don't have a windows system to create this boot
disk on.

Can anyone tell me how tp create one using mandrake 10.

Before anyone asks, my wifes a bean counter and to get her to use this PC at
home I need to install some fancy accounting stuff onto my linux machine, and
I guess vmware is the way, whilst I have an evaluation copy.

Thanks as always

[newbie] SANE and scanners

2004-05-30 Per discussione Mark Annandale
Hi Guys

I'm having a bit of a problem getting my scanner to work under 10CE. There
appear to be two scanners detected and the output of sane-find-scanner is :

[EMAIL PROTECTED] mark]# sane-find-scanner

  # No SCSI scanners found. If you expected something different, make sure
that
  # you have loaded a SCSI driver for your SCSI adapter.

found USB scanner (vendor=0x043d, product=0x002d) at libusb:005:005
found USB scanner (vendor=0x046d, product=0x08f0 [Camera]) at libusb:005:004
  # Your USB scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported
by
  # SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backend's manpage.

  # Scanners connected to the parallel port or other proprietary ports can't
be
  # detected by this program.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] mark]# scanimage -L
device `gt68xx:libusb:005:005' is a Lexmark X73 flatbed scanner

It looks like the scanner won't work because of the duplicate entry in libusb.
Is it okay to edit this file, although I'm concerned that I may stuff things
up properly.

FWIW this scanner was detected and worked perfectly under version 9.2, so I
can only asume this is a simple problem.

Thanks as always.

[newbie] Modprobe nvidia

2004-05-22 Per discussione Mark Annandale
Hi Guys

I have to enter 'modprobe nvidia' after each boot to access kde. I'm not sure
why my pc stopped booting directly into a graphical mode, but modprobe nvidia
works. This is not convenient though, and I remember reading somewhere on the
list about someone else having a similar problem, but cannot no find the
message.

Could one of the guru's please advise me how to fix this, or alternatively
what and where I need to add any commands.

I think I've just confused the hell out of myself, but as always, thanks.

[newbie] NForce 2 revisited

2004-05-04 Per discussione Mark Annandale
Hi guys

I am starting to get complete freezes with my MDK10 CE install. The only way
out is the 3 fingered salute. Judging by some of the posts on this site, as
well as various other linux sites, general concensus seems to be that the
NForce 2 chipset may be the problem.

My motherboard is M7NCD with AMD XP2600 CPU. The motherboard chipset is as
mentioned with USB2 only onboard.

Could someone please tell me where to start looking for a problem, or if this
is a common and re3solved problem, what the fix is.

FWIW the freeze seems to happen when the CPU is having to work hard, I have
particularly noticed it when trying to install Unreal Tournament 2004.

Thanks as always.

May have found the fix for this freezing, by adding 'noapic lapic' to the

I hope this can help others.

[newbie] Kde 3.2 revisited

Hi Folks

Sorry to bring this up again, as I'm sure its been asked, but where are
the newbie archives these days. I only seem to be able to find up to
November last year.

I have downloaded all the 3.2 RPM's, but having a tough time trying to
install them, lots of dependency problems. Google hasn't been much help
either.

Please could someone point me at some means of installing 3.2. By the
way I'm running version 9.2.

[newbie] Spam filtering revisited

2003-09-21 Per discussione Mark Annandale
Hi Guys

I have been dabbling with mailfilter and spamassassin. Spamassassin filters a
few spam messages received and I have managed to get filters sorted out with
KMail to send the SPAM* messages to a spam folder.

Trying out maililter the logs show that the messages on the pop3 server have
been looked at, but nothing deleted. I used the default settings so I'm
gessing some rules are needed.

My question is this : Having a spam folder with hundreds of rejected messages,
is it possible to have some kind os script to generate rules from the spam
headers ? I don't know much about scripts but perhaps someone on the list has
done something similar. basically this is just to save me the time of
manually adding individual rules to mailfilter and / or spamassassin.

Alternatively is there another spam type application that could scan the spam
folder and automatically generate rules, et al (helmet on) 'the other OS'
(helmet off) type stuff.

Thnaks as always.

For the newbies like myself, who install 9.2 RC1 and find there's no mcc to

Look on CD1 under RPM's and install dracconf and the rpm* files you find on

Since the release of 9.2 Beta2 I haven't heard or seen anything about it
from anyone on the list. Is this because it's so amazing that list members
are speechless? Or because they can't finish an install, and are therefore
disconnected from the Net ? I tried burning and installing them, and it
quickly went to hell. Several restarts later (this is the short version), I
got to the end of the install. When it tried to detect my printer (Brother
MFC4800), which is not supported by Linux yet, it displayed a message that
it was unable to find printer.rpm and stopped there. That's it. All done.
It simply wouldn't go any further. I'm considering re-doing the install
without a printer attached to see if that solves it, but without the
above-noted rpm, I doubt it will finish properly at all. Obviously, either
the rpm is not on the CD's at all, or the path statement used by the
installer is wrong. Either way, it's not happening.

Any suggestions or similar situations out there in Mandrake-Land? I realize
that it's a Beta, and that there may be bugs in it still, but perhaps
 there's a work-around? Also, didn't Mandrake announce that the new 2.6
Kernel would be added to Beta2? Didn't find it. FYI, I checked the md5sums
of course. Just curious if anyone had something to offer about any of this
 ?

 Thanks in Advance,...

[newbie] Dynamic IP

2002-12-03 Per discussione Mark Annandale
Hi Guys

I'm using Mandrake 9 and enjoy using it, so far with no major headaches. I
would now like to set up a mail server with web access for my own use whilst
travelling (I'm going to South Africa on holioday tomorrow).

I have a cable connection with a dynamically assigned IP and using a Linksys
DSL/Cable router with my Linux PC connected via one of the available 4 LAN
ports.

Having set up an account with no-ip.com I have installed the client on my pc
and think it updates my IP automatically, however I am a bit confused with
where the router fits into all this. If my Dynamic IP changes the router will
automatically remain connected. I have set up Mandrake using a static IP, and
enabled a route to the PC using the routers DMZ function.

Can I safely assume that this would give me access to my PC, just by entering
the blahblah.no-ip.com address ?

Does anyone have any suggestions for a webmail server ? I know the easiest way
is just to forward all my mail to my ISP's facility - but thats not why I
changed over to Linux a few years ago.

I trust someone has a similar setup and can chuck me a few pointers.

Thanks for all the help thats come flooding in. However, whilst SSH seems the

Subject: [newbie] ASUS A7N266-VM

Well, I had to btreak down and get something that would give me a little

experience supporting NVidia installs.

As you know, NVidia keeps their 3d drivers secret and proprietary, which

means those drivers don't get on the download edition, and since the
driver's wrapper has to be recompiled for each new kernel, it is
difficult to make the commercial offering work properly--since linux
distros don't have the source, the installation is always non-trivial.

After looking around, I decided to build something that could dual-boot
for testing purposes and also fit in a small case with a CDRW/DVD as the

only 5.25 drive, so I chose the ASUS A7N266-VM

Hmmm,

DDR RAM only... no problem

Driver CD has no linux drivers which I found pretty much par for the
course.

Driver CD has NO DRIVERS FOR winNT, Win2K, or WinXP, and the manual says

the graphics _won't_ work with them!!!

Mandrake 8.2 is running using the XFree drivers, and I will soon (this
weekend) be taking the plunge tfor the binary only drivers (You can bet
this computer gets its very own DMZ on my LAN; I absolutely do not trust

binary-only proggies that can rub shoulders with the kernel.)

Now we have the largest selling board maker producing for the
inexpensive computer market a single integrated board, very new and
about half the price of previous NForce boards, and it tops out at WinME

or Win98SE

Does ASUS know or _very_ strongly suspect something we don't?

It seems a high-production item like this would be a huge gamble unless
their inside information says a great deal about future OS usage
patterns, or they think someone's bubble is about to burst, or implode.

Hi there

I'm sure this is the same problem I had. I went for the automatic network
detection setup (this is a stand alone machine with a dial up link),
Mandrake 8.1 appeared to have set up my NIC (I know its stand alone, but has
a network card) as the default route to the internet. So I could dial up as
well but get no mail.

I did a reinstall and turned off the automatic network setup, and just
selected the modem access option and everything was fine. Then set up the
network card seperately.

I hope this helps you as I think I just confused myself again.

Thanks for that. There is no longer support for OptOut.

I am really looking for something that can try and hack me, and give me an
unbiased result, as opposed to a commercial setup who, if they are
unsuccessfull, may be trying to sell me a firewall when mine is perfectly
secure.

I'm not saying that using Bastille Firewall won't make my PC secure, just I'd
like to play with something that can assure me its as secure as possible. My
wife's PC running ME regularly has 40 to 50 'hits' an hour. This is detected
and reported by Zone Alarm.

However when I can convince myself that my Linux machine is hack resistant I
will move at using it as the gateway, firewall and router.

Thanks again.

Has anyone else found this and have they fixed it ?

Thanks to the Guys who responded regarding the fonts and firewall. It was
simply a case of confusing Mandrake Control Centre with the KDE Control Panel
setup.

Once I sat and thought about things, and read what was in front of me, it all
worked out fine.

Is it the 'lock' command.

How do you pass a command from the windows machine to execute ifup ppp0 ?

[newbie] Internet Sharing

2001-07-21 Per discussione Mark Annandale

Hi Guys

Here's what I hope is not a stupid question.

I have attempted to set up connection sharing under mandrake 8. I see it has
allocated 192.168.0.1 as et0 IP address. The default gateway is also set as
192.168.0.1.

I would like to connect my wifes machine to the 'net using my Mandrake
machine as the proxy and gateway. I am able to ping the Linux box from the
'doze machine, as well as ping the 'doze machine from Linux.

What else is required to set this up. I don't mind if the 'doze mail stuff is
collected directly from our ISP although ultimately, because I use the Linux
box exclusively, I would like all our mail collected using qmail or something
and distributed upon request to OE on 'doze and KMail on my machine.

The first hurdle though is getting Linux to dial up when requested by the
Windows machine. Any help will be much appreciated. FWIW when setting up the
connection sharing I was prompted for disk 1 and stuff like IPChains and Bind
was installed.

Thanks and have a great day.

Re: [newbie] WinGate and Mandrake Linux problem (again, again).

2001-07-13 Per discussione Mark Annandale

Hi guys

Firstly thanks for your patience when you receive basically a non Linux
question. However there are a few points to consider. Please don't take this
as an invitation to start a flame war, just an honest personal opinion.

Quite a few people on the Newbie list are ex Windows users trying hard to
escape the M$ confines. Mandrake 8 is pretty well easy to set up as a
workstation however the problem arises when I try and understand how to set
my Mandrake box up as an internet gateway. I have tried to locate the
necessary documentation, however can only find literature relating to other
distributions which doesn't help much.

Don't get me wrong here about supporting M$ supported software but the
lurning curve is a lot steeper when there is no one at the office who uses
Linux. Unfortunately the newbie list is the first place to turn.

On the bright side I have downloaded the new KOffice and can now happily open
my old Word and Excel stuff, and saved them back onto my Linux machine in a
format Koffice is happy with. I use KMail exclusively and in fact the last
time I looked at the M$ machine was to sort my wifes mail account out. I have
no further use for the Windows environment.

Pardon me for digressing but my point is that unless one receives a few
pointers it is damn difficult to set up the Linux side as proxy, gateway,
mail server etc. without a little help from the list.

Kind regards

[newbie] Webmin

2001-07-12 Per discussione Mark Annandale

Hi Guys

When I try and get into Webmin using http://127.0.0.1:1 my linux box
dials up my ISP. My setup is a windows machine running a freeware proxy
setup, which my Linux machins calls up to collect mail and access the 'net.

I want the scenario to be the opposite, but have not figured out how to have
the Linux box as the proxy and gateway and so enable the 'doze machine to
access the internet through the Linux setup.

Maybe I'm being thick but cannot find anything 'idiot proof' to help me with
this setup. I know the old saying 'if it aint broke, don't fix it', however I
use the Linux machine exclusively and the rst of my family use the M$
machine, and with my interest in Linux I would like to be in a position to
control everything from my PC.

Anyway my first question was about Webmin, however if someone has got a
similar setup at home I would appreciate a few pointers. I'm using Mandrake 8
with a 56k dial up connection to my ISP who assigns me a dynamic IP id this
is of any use.

Thanks and kind regards

[newbie] Mandrake 8.0, XF86Config and SiS 630

2001-07-09 Per discussione Mark Annandale

Hi there

I had a similar problem with the SiS chipsets. Go and have a look at
www.xfree.org and see which versions of XFree have support for your chipset.
In all probability it will be the 3.3.6 version without acceleration.
Alternatively you could also do a search on the XFree and Mandrake sites for
setting up and using a Framebuffer server.

I hope this is of some assistance to you.

I just had a look at the XFree site where it states that release 3.3.6 has
support for the 630 chipset. There uis also support for the 630 chipset in

My advice would be to stick with 3.3.6 or a framebuffer server if you cannot
get it to work.

[newbie] LILO

2001-05-16 Per discussione Mark Annandale

Hiya Guys

Here's a quick one. I have installed a new harddrive as /dev/hdd, installed
Mandrake on it and can no longer boot into Linux. I get LI followed by pages
of 0's and 1's :-(.

When setting up LILO I left the bootloader on /dev/hda1 as that is where
'doze resides.

What, therefor, are the correct parameters to enable dual booting. BTW
partition magic 6 doesn't seem to like my Mandrake installation and will not
enable it as a boot option.

Thanks for any advice.

[newbie] Toshiba 4200 Notebook

2000-12-08 Per discussione Mark Annandale

Hi Guys

Does anyone have any experience with installing 7.2 onto a Tosh 4200. The
problem is the video card, a s3 Savage chipset, is not recognised during
installation. I have downloaded the patch but am unsure how to install it
from the command line.

The patch I got is s3savage-1.0-13.tar.gz. I can untar this file but when
trying to run ./install sh I get 'XFree must be installed'. I thought during
the installation that Xfree was installed.

I also believe the modem is a dreaded winmodem, but with a patch can be made
to work.

Thank you and any help will be much appreciated.

Greetings all

I am trying to install 7.1 onto a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4200 laptop. 6Gb

card.

My laptop has a S3 mobilesavage chip which is not listed on the available
choices. Using the generic chipset only produces a 640 x 640 display which
is far too large for the notebook screen. I rteally need 800 x 600 minimum.

Has anyone done a similar installation sucessfully, if so which monitor,
chipset and resolution settings were used.

RE: [newbie] Installing an Iomega Atapi Zip drive

1999-12-24 Per discussione Mark Annandale

Hi Brent

Firstly apologies all for using W'doze to reply but my linux box is
undergoing repairs at the moment.

To install your Zip drive, assuming its a parallel port version, do the
following:-

Place the following into /etc/conf.modules
modprobe lp
sleep 1
insmod ppa

(I also assume your printer is plugged through the zip drive)

Then edit your /etc/fstab directory and insert this line:-
/dev/sda4 mnt/zip vfatnoauto,user 0 0

make a new directory under /mnt named /zip

Reboot the machine and you will see your printer and zip drive are detected,
otherwise mount /mnt/zip should work. If you are using X then its fairly
simple to add an icon to your desktop and mount / unmount from there.

Hope this helps
