There is no default support for them in newer (any?) versions of MDK, you have to recompile your kernel add it (not hard AFAIK, make menu/xconfig should read your current config all you'll have to do is check the box for aout binaries (haven't tried this though, you may want to check 1st)). -WBD

I tried to avoid installing any KDE but some app needed it and I couldn't find the app in the list of software to be installed so went ahead and told it to "resolve the dependencies" which resulted in KDE being installed. I remember having chosen a handful of other window managers, among them fvwm or fvwm2. Under fvwm2 you can right click and from a menu choose to switch to a different windowing system. Where is this feature in KDE? There is a place in the setup where certain groups of apps don't open up when you hit the spacebar. You *have* run Xconfigurator specified your card, haven't you? Do you know how much RAM it's got? Moving the RAM setting down a notch in Xconfigurator can sometimes help, is another setting you can play with... also, you could try asking about your problem in the "comp.windows.x" newsgroup (or searching it @ deja.com). As for buying a new card, it's what I did when I was running Caldera 2.2 it didn't support my embedded chip. Installing it was as simple as slipping a jumper on the motherboard. Have you tried Xconfigurator? XF86Config? (case sensitive I may have got that wrong eg: xf86config) N.B. XF86Setup will not work with SiS chips. [newbie] re - compiling kernal to support ESS-Solo - 1 soundchip

Re: [newbie] sound card install and video adjustments
- Original Message - From: Tony Zocolillo I gave up on getting the SiS5597 on-board video to work and switched to a ATI Mach 64 2Mb PCI. I did try using the XFree86 3.3.5 but when I run XF86Setup, I couldn't get it to work...couldn't get it to reconfigure back to VGA16...so I end up reinstalling Linux each time. The ATI card works well except I can't figure out how to change resolution. I'm currently at 1024x768x16bit. Do I use xf86config? Whenever I run this program I seen to get problems as a result. This program asks for monitor information "free form" and when I put my monitor info in, I get errors relating to monitor selection on restart. When I installed Mandrake, I was give a list to choose from, but in xf86config, I get no list...thus the info I put in is aparently invalid. How do I use xf86config just to change one thing, or can't I? What info do I use for the monitor (I can't remember the list verbatim)? Can I use "CUSTOM"? SiS chipsets don't do the VGA mode that XF86setup needs. type Xconfigurator enter at command line follow the prompts see: http://www.redhat.com/corp/support/manuals/RHL-6.0-Manual/install-guide/manu al/doc064.html#i369 as a guide. -Warren.

I Dual boot Mdk a patched to the gills Norton Utilities equipped W98. 98 can be made fairly stable with a little effort.
