 Hi all

I have mandrake 6.0 distribution. I have compiled my 2.2.13 kernel using
486 option with success. Today I have recompiled again to add some
amateur radio modules and remove other modules and things I do not use.
 Now it stops when booting.
I have used the following commands:
 make menuconfig
 make dep
 make clean
make zImage ( some times I needed bzImage)
 make modules
 make modules_install
 make install
When booting the machine, all is ok, but it stops on " finding module
 dependencies"
I press CTRL - C and it continnues, but after a while it says something
like :" kernel does not suppot vfat"
Starting continnues and it finishes normally.

How can I fix this problem?
I have recompiled the kernel several times with same problem and I am
bored, compilling kernel and modules takes about 3 hours in my old 486.

 Thanks in advance.
 Ramiro.

 Using Mandrake 6.1

I am typing to you from Pine in the Console.

I have been having endless problems with my mouse.

I thought I would try testing it in Gnome. Well, it's even worse in Gnome.
In KDE, my mouse lasts about 5 to 10 minutes. In Gnome, it dies almost
instantly. And now, when I try in xterm (in Gnome) to switch back and I
type "switchdesk" to get into KDE, I cannot even do that. After typing
"switchdesk" and trying to move my mouse over to the Switchdesk utility
screen, my mouse dies on me before I even have a chance to click on the
"KDE" or "Another Level" option. I am forever stuck in Gnome.

How do I get into KDE or Another Level from the console in a situation
like this. If I type "startx", I am taken right back into Gnome. Sounds
 like a vicious circle.

When I installed Mandrake I used the "recommended" option. Which also
doesnt give you any options on what packages you want installed. It does
it
for you. I think that for a newbie its a nasty trap. The time I have
spent
trying to get around compiling problems has been because these packages
wernt installed, and I'm NOT impressed. Surely these above packages
should
have been included in that recommended option since they are needed for
 basic compiling?

LMAO :)

IM(andrakes)NSHO you need to be an "Expert" + "Developer" to get
this stuff when you install...

IMHO an option to choose "compiling" which installs the basic
tools/libs/headers/src would be very helpful @ install time.

Mind you, apart from developers, the only people who would
use it are the small % with hardware probs people setting
up fairly advanced app's ...

BTW, re: ALSA, 7.0 ships with it in /usr/src/Linux 2.2.14-15-mdk
(may not be the latest ver) all you may have to do is run the
snddevices script in the /alsa dir load the module + maybe
load the oss compatibility one (check the included doc's).

The updates are all RPM's, might still be stored in your top

MDK 6.1 uses pgcc, the rpm is on your disk.
src.rpm's are *sorce* code, ie: not compiled.

You might be better off upgrading or reinstalling

is what they told me:

The SiS 6326 has a known bug with the X window system.

On your Linux system is a file named /etc/X11/XF86Config . This text
file is made up of sections
   that look like this:

   Section "Device"
   (various entries here)
   EndOfSection

You need to edit the section of this file called "Device."

If you have a card with 8MB of video memory, first try telling the X
server that there is only 4MB
present by adding the following line to the Device section of your
config file:

 Videoram 4096

If you have a 4MB card, or if the above line doesn't help, try
adding the following line to the Device section:

 Option "nolinear"

A drawback with this option is that colour depths higher than 8bpp
can't be used, but that is better
   than nothing.

If you see problems when moving windows with KDE, try the following:

 Option "no_pixmap_cache"

All of these problems with the SiS6326 video cards should be fixed in
the next release of XFree.

setup screen nor text. Ive found the sndconfig file and thought great, this
should do it, I had all the info ready on IRQ settings etc, but it didnt
auto detect anything nor is MPU-401 isnt in the list, even though in the
readme notes it says it is supported.

Ive got the 910AF Jetway motherboard with the Intel 82810 and 82C801AB and
82C802AB Chipset with On Board CODEC C Compliant to AC97 and in Windows
sound mixer it shows up as using MPU-401 so Im assuming choosing that
somewhere in configuring for Kinux should be ok? Thats if I can even get to
the setup or configuration utility for sound.

Can anyone help me out? I dont know where to look now on how to get my
sound configured. The readme file is huge. Ive printed it out and all it
says is what I have to do but not where to go and how to do it. I dont know
how to build and/or compile a kernel let alone find any simple question and
answer setup like there is for the Xconfig for the monitor.

 regards
 Gina

If you still have the stock kernel, try typing:
"modprobe snd-mpu401-uart.o" enter (as root, no "quotemarks")
see what happens when you open the mixer

If you get any error messages - save them tell us

Mandrake 7.0 is heaps better than 6.1 at setting up
Video Sound, I got a copy from:
http://www.copyleft.co.nz
(NZ$ 15.00 including fastpost)

You'd probably have to reinstall, rather than upgrade
though, as 7.0 has a few bugs..

as for your problems with make Xconfig etc, you need
the development tools, if you have nothing important
you could try booting off your CDROM choosing
Upgrade--custom--development tools (this could stuff
things though (not hardware)). You could just reinstall
pick them too (I'm on install #7 or so myself...)

not read the words. It is like a black strip. But I can see the button and

 Hi,
How do I switch out of KDE and into something like FVWM2? I tried to
avoid
installing any KDE but some app needed it and I couldn't find the app in
the list of software to be installed so went ahead and told it to "resolve
the dependencies" which resulted in KDE being installed. I remember
having
chosen a handful of other window managers, among them fvwm or fvwm2.
Under
fvwm2 you can right click and from a menu choose to switch to a different
windowing system. Where is this feature in KDE?

There is a place in the setup where certain groups of apps don't open up
when you hit the spacebar. Perhaps the app I missed which would have
allowed me not to have installed KDE was in one of those sections.
Perhaps
 not...

Anyway... I want my other window manager(s)... g

move your old modules from (top level) /lib/modules to a new folder

Xconfigurator should work o.k., Iv'e always had hassles with fontpath
default resolutions with xf86config Mandrake(which BTW is the right way to
spell it, XF86Config is the name of the file it makes) . Try to find out
what your card is. In Win98 right click a clear area of your desktop then
Lclick
proprertys -- settings -- advanced --adapter you should see it

Also, do you Know what version of xfree86 you have?
MDK 6.1 has the newest version, but 6.0 has an older one which may not work
as well for your card. www.xfree86.org

Plugged in all the relevant DNS numbers, edited the resolve file,

Worked fine under Mandrake 6.0 but I did a clean install not the upgrade

No, that's not true... kppp only disables resolv.conf's configuration if
you check the "Disable existing DNS servers during connection" box.
Otherwise, kppp will happily leave the options in your resolv.conf enabled

Re: [newbie] KPPP

I think Kppp overwrites the /etc/resolv.conf with its
own settings each time it's used. This is to allow us
to use more than 1 ISP without editing /etc/resolv.conf
each time we change. So the DNS *must* be entered
be entered correctly in Kppp.

To do so:

Click Kppp - click setup - click on the account you
are connecting with - click edit - click DNS tab -
check that your ip's DNS addresses are entered
correctly in the *largest* box - if not, remove them
enter the correct ones by typing them
(one at a time) in the middle box clicking add.

Check your DNS configs. Someone has said that there's a place in KPPP

  http://rampages.onramp.net/~slywolf/xf86main.html

A search for SiS @ www.redhat.com might help too.

Please tell us how it went, as questions about SiS chips come
up regularly, I would like to be sure I am giving the right
answers (I have a SiS 620, but I try to help everyone that is
cursed with the damn things).

Subject: [newbie] Blacked out Text

I have installed version 6.1, however when Xwindows starts, all of the
text
is blacked out. The display worked fine with Redhat 6.0, but doesn't work
now. I have an SiS 6326 video adapter and a CTX VL700 monitor. Any help
 would be greatly appreciated.

Re: [newbie] MS releases new Windows and NT Keyboard (humor)

1999-01-03 Per discussione Warren Doney

I Dual boot Mdk a patched to the gills Norton Utilities equipped W98.
98 can be made fairly stable with a little effort. I haven't had a BSOD for
at least a week ;-) - plenty of browser crashes though (ISP advice: "have
you rebooted? windows just does that sometimes...). I get browser
crashes with MDK/Netscape too, but usually Xkill sorts it out (ctrl+alt+
back once or twice). Mandrake 6.1 cost me about US$ 7.50 (inc postage)
What will W2k/NTx offer me that M6.1 doesn't? How much does it cost?

No, I am just an Engineer who has used both since 1993. You're spreading
crap and it's UN-professional as well as false. Have you used Windows NT?
Have you used Windows 2000 for 6 months as I have? No? THEN DON'T MAKE
STATEMENTS OUT OF YOUR BEHIND. I have told you the truth - I have been
running for 6 months and instead you choose to believe myths instead of

Re: [newbie] hanging trying to dial modem

1999-01-02 Per discussione Warren Doney

I hear they are making USB modems these days. Haven't seen one
IRL, but saw one advertised in a magazine. AFAIK these will not
work with Linux, as it does not support USB yet (stable kernals
anyway). Be sure you get a SERIAL external modem.

HSP modem = WIN Modem = don't work with linux modem
