Though I do see a lot of the same or similar questions asked on this
list, I still tend to read the responses because I often do find out
little tips or tricks or tidbits of information that are handy and
useful, even if the problem itself is something I could remedy without
needing [much] assistance.

Maybe gently nudging those FAQ-type questions to a FAQ page/site would
be good, but I wouldn't want to see uber-newbie questions simply
greeted with a response of RTFM!!

[newbie] File undelete utility?

2005-02-07 Per discussione cervixcouch
In the process of trying to set up an external hard drive, I misread the
Seagate setup instructions and accidentally destroyed the partitions on my
laptop so badly that using 'rescue' from the installation CD couldn't do
good. (all my partitions were gone)

I've since reinstalled Linux and tried to set the partition sizes to what
they were before, in the hope that I could run some sort of file restore
utility on /dev/hda6, which was where my /home drive was. (my hope was
that that portion of the hard drive wouldn't be overwritten by the
install)

I've tried r-linux, recover and mundelete and none of them have worked. I
need something a little more thorough than those three, something that
will scan the drive itself instead of only checking the inodes.

Any suggestions?

not sure if it has anything you need, but it has alot on it. The
web site list all the programs on it, you might find something
useful, if not for now maybe later on.
I downloaded magicrescue and managed to restore all the image files that
were in my /home partition. The utility isn't comprehensive enough to
restore my downloaded tgz/zip/rpm files, so I'll give ultimatebootcd a
shot too.

Thanx

have been fairly simple to recover before trying to re-install Linux.
But it is worth a try...

OK, I'll bite. If the OS won't boot, the partitions are all gone and
rescue complains that it can't find /usr, what would the fairly simple
solution be in such a situation?

I suspected that it was a problem with either my WindowManager (I was
using gdm then switched to kdm then xdm) or XWindows, so I started
fiddling with some settings. Well, as a result of doing something very
stupid in the control panel, I managed to totally wreck XWindows so it
would start at all. I uninstalled xorg, kde, gnome and icewm then
reinstalled them, except for kde 'cause I was feeling lazy and short on
time.

Miraculously, when X started working again everything was fine. I opened
up certain windows/dialog boxes that previously consistently appeared
cropped and now they all appear as they should.

Granted, what I did was extreme, but it seems to rule out a video card or
screen resolution problem, since I'd already tried that.

I'm still not sure what in the WindowManager caused the problem, though. I
was hoping to find a miracle setting in a config file somewhere, but now
I'll have to wait until the problem recurs.

Also, to Mr. JoeHill: pekwm is a tad minimal for my taste. I do like at
least a little butter on my biscuit!

[newbie] Window sizing problem

2005-01-18 Per discussione cervixcouch
Sometimes, when I'm in an application (doesn't matter which one) I'll
click on a button and the next window that opens will be cropped, i.e.
not all the data inside the window will be visible because a portion of
it is cut off. I won't have the option to modify the size of the window
or scroll left/right/up/down to view its contents.
Since this happens in more than one application (OpenOffice Writer,
Mozilla, etc), I figure it must be due to a system setting somewhere.

I've gone into kcontrol-Look and Feel-Fonts and reduced the font
sizes. I've gone into Gnome Control Panel and reduced the font sizes
there. I've also tried increasing and decreasing the screen resolution,
but to no avail. It appears to only affect the size of the text, not the
form elements like buttons, listbox widths, etc.

Is there somewhere else I should make adjustments? Why wouldn't the
contents of a window scale down to fit the window frame?

[newbie] Kernel source for 9.2??

2004-12-28 Per discussione cervixcouch
I feel kinda doofy asking this, but where do I find the kernel source from
the installation CDs? I'm trying to install software that needs to find
it in /usr/src/linux.

I've looked at all three CDs but haven't seen anything that appears to be
the source for my kernel (2.4.22.10mdk). When I went into MCC and did a
search for 'kernel' in the package manager, I got a higher kernel version
than the one I have.

What is the kernel src called on the disks? Is it called something
obscure, like bimbos-on-juice.2.4.22.10mdk, and I'm just too braindead
to catch it???

Yeah, I know I can download it from various places online, but I assumed
it would be installable from the installation CDs, like it was in 7.2.

Tried that. Didn't do me a lick of good. When I rebooted, the options
display theme under console and use graphical boot were reenabled.

I did notice that I got an error message about rxvt not being able to
display UTF-8. I have Icewm set as the default desktop in
/etc/sysconfig/desktop and have rxvt set as the terminal application in
the toolbar, so I went to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icewm and changed the entry
from rxvt to konsole.

For whatever reason, this worked. I don't see why it would, or why
Linux would care what terminal I have in the toolbar.

I think you did a great job of summing it up. But one thing I have
never seen talked about as a way to get a virus into a Linux system is
to include it in an RPM. Lets face it, how many people actualy check
the scripts that are run when an rpm is installed? Do you check that it
is signed properly? (I know urpmi will check, but I also remember
problem with package signitures talked about on the lists...) Remember,
almost all RPMs are installed by root, so any scripts an RPM runs are
also run by root. And all that is needed is to hack an update mirror
site to infect a large number of machines...

Which is why you should be extremely careful about any software that does
 not
come from known and trusted sources. Reputable sources do have checks
 built
in to make sure they start with safe packages and their boxes are not
cracked. As always, the ultimate check is your own care and common sense.

So how exactly does one safeguard against a trojan when installing an RPM?

Re: [newbie] eth0 won't initialize on startup

2004-10-21 Per discussione cervixcouch
Maybe I should qualify my previous statements. After boot, ifconfig
indeed, shows that ETH0 is UP, however it does not get an IP address
from the DHCP server. I have not yet tried it with a static IP
address. In order for me to do any network communication, I must su
to root and execute an 'ifup eth0' in order for it to get an ip
 address.

This is definately not a huge issue, especially since this is a play
machine for me, but it is annoying nonetheles.

As for my replyto: address, what should it be set for? It is
currently set to be this e-mail address and that's the way I usually
set it on my mail accounts...

 Thanks

This has happened to me with both 10.0 and 10.1 on my Dell Latitude CPiA.
eth0 would come up if I did ifup eth0, but without an IP and with no
static routes. If I tried to set a static IP during install, or if I
tried to set it via MCC once I logged in, eth0 initialization would fail
on subsequent boots and could not be reset via MCC.

I found that if I manually place the necessary network info in
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 (and add MII_NOT_SUPPORTED=yes),
make sure to add the hostname to /etc/sysconfig/network, and place the DNS
entries in /etc/resolv.conf then eth0 would initialize on boot.

Re: [newbie] Problem with my web site

I have just noticed a very troublesome problem with my web site and was
 hoping
that someone here could point me in the right direction. I am using
Postnuke CMS version .750 Gold, MySQL server and PHP 4.3.8. The site
displays in IE, Opera fine but whenever I hit it from a Mozilla browser,
including Firefox, Mozilla or Netscape, I get a really strange corrupted
 display.

Another interesting item, if you go to the site as the root site using
http://kislinux.org/ You get the corrupted display within Mozilla. If
 you
go to http://kislinux.org/linux/ which is an alias for the same directory,
the site comes up just fine. It is really bugging the crap out of me.

I open both using Mozilla (1.4) and they look fine. It opened fine in
Konqueror too.

You need to have a default page to load, probably. Should be called
'index.html', off the root of the server, ie. /var/www/html/index.html (or
 .php or whatever).

there is an file index.html at http://www.mysite.org/mypage and it loads

...sorry, not off the root of the server...me not reading good :-\

The thing is, http://www.mysite.org/mypage is looking for a page to load
called
'mypage', which of course does not exist, it's a directory. Loading
www.mysite.org automagically looks for 'index.html' or the like, but as
soon as
you add a dir off the root, you need to add that trailing /. I'm not
sure
 this
is something to be 'fixed', I believe it is normal behaviour.

Blast me to hell if I am wrong ;-)

I had the same error message several times after setting up Samba.
Some people can print, other not.
Probably you can print because of guest = OK

 This is from my log:
 Printer problems:
 1)
 Description:
Printer on Windows shows: Access Denied, Unable to Connect

 Solution:
 a)
 guest ok = yes
 b)
Add Windows user via SWAT to Samba.
For example when connection from Windows as root add user root.
Use identical passwords on Windows and Samba.

When a Windows 2000 client installs printer drivers locally the client
thinks the printer is local as well.
To fix this problem, set use client driver to yes.
This is a generic printer setting: under SWAT select printers, advanced
settings, set use client driver to yes.

That's interesting.

I had the same problem, despite guest ok = yes. I fixed it by using
security = share

Now the printer status is opening instead of Access Denied, Unable to
Connect and all computers on my network can print without a problem.

This is fine for my current situation, but I would have prefered to have
security = user, but still have the printer be publicly available. I
couldn't get it to work that way, though.

[newbie] server security

2004-04-18 Per discussione cervixcouch

I recently manage to get an Apache and imap server running on an old box
of mine at home. The servers work, but I feel that I should make the
effort to make them secure.

I am behind a router/firewall and also have shorewall running on the
computer. This is basically the same situation with my other home
computers, but I was wondering if there's more I can do to prevent either
server from being broken into from the Internet?

From within my LAN, I can't ping or ftp the computer, though I can mount
samba shares, which requires a password. I'm not sure how I could test
this from outside the LAN.

If I do telnet serverIP http I get a response, but I don't know if this
is a bad thing or not.

Is there a way to thoroughly test the security of my servers? Or better
yet, how would I go about hacking them so I can make sure nobody else
can?

Since big corporate servers manned by trained professionals get hacked,
I'm concerned that mine may be sitting ducks right now, this being my
first foray into the world of server administration.

It's more the case that linux as an option wouldn't work on a windows
machine if you wanted to use your files there as well.
Hence use a format that can be accessed from a windows PC should it ever
 be necessary.

I figured as much, as far as a Windows machine goes, but I was only using
Linux machines to try to save to the floppies I'd formatted as Linux
floppies. I've gotten the same error message on three Linux machines
now.

No biggie. I can just format them as DOS floppies, but it does seem
silly to need to do so.

[newbie] formatting a floppy

2003-09-18 Per discussione cervixcouch
This seems like it should be so simple, but it just won't work.

Using 'Gnome Floppy' and 'Floppy Formater' completely hangs my system, so
I've been trying to format a linux floppy so I can save some files.

I've tried mke2fs /dev/fd0 AND fdformat /dev/fd0 both of which
appear to have worked, i.e. no error messages.

I can umount /mnt/floppy then mount /mnt/floppy without a problem.

Yet when I try to copy anything to the floppy, using cp testfile.txt
/mnt/floppy, I get the error message:

cp: cannot stat '/mnt/floppy/testfile.txt': Input/Output error

What does 'cannot stat' mean?

What am I doing wrong?

[newbie] problem with Linuxconf 'Help' window height

2003-03-16 Per discussione cervixcouch

For quite a number of the windows in Linuxconf, whenever I click 'Help'
to get more information, the window that pops up is several times the
height of the screen and there is no scrollbar present to scroll down the
information.

Maximizing the screen does no good and clicking the 'X' in the upper left
hand corner and selecting 'size' does nothing either.

Is there a setting somewhere where this window behaviour can be changed?

Right after I sent the email, I figured out that I could use the ALT key to
click and drag the window. Figures. ;)

Thanks for help regardless, everyone.

The odd thing is that this window behaviour isn't consistent for all .help
files. Some open up with a scroll bar and some don't.

Does anyone know what program is responsible for producing these windows?
Nothing in Control Center seems to affect it.

Do I need to make an entry in /etc/fstab and mount the minidisc as a

I've tried learning vi but dealing with the modes and such really put me
off and the tutorials I found weren't written very well. Maybe I'll try
again at some point, since vi seems so universal, but for now I mostly
stick with kedit or emacs to do file editing.

The main thing I like about emacs is that if I need to type something in
Chinese I can do so using a variety of input methods. It isn't so much of
an issue for me now that I'm using Mandrake 9.0 but when I had 7.2, emacs
was the easiest way for me to read the Chinese newsgroups.

my understanding of pop3 was that the emails were held on a remote server

As well, you're

I actually left the postfix configurations at the default, since the
