Re: [newbie] Evo question (was Evolution archiving)

Hi Paul,

I've just upgraded ximian evolution to 1.4.4 through ximian red-carpet,
wich manages all the dependences stuff (two or three packages were
downloade and updated) automatically. Try it, it works great.

http://www.ximian.org/products/redcarpet/download.html

Then, choose Linux mandrake 9.1 for x386 in the list and go.

You can also use red-carpet to upgrade mandrake instead urpmi.

Re: [newbie] Print manager

Hi,

You can add an special button in the systray (i'm using KDE as my
current desktop) called printing system or so (sorry, i've got the
spanish KDE localized version and i don't know exactly how it's called
in english). By clicking in one of the little up-arrows in the KDE task
menu, select pannel menu add special button printing system. A
menu-button (button that expands a menu) with a printer in it will be
placed in the kde bar, and you can easily administrate your printer jobs
clicking in the menu entry with your printer name --and even configure
it through preferences or printing administration.

You can also start the printer jobs administrator by typing

kjobviewer

in the console.

You can access, as derek says, to a web browser interface using the URI
he posted. But using Konqueror -and only Konqueror- just type print:/ to
access to different printer related services, or print:/jobs to see your
printer jobs status, although you're using LDP instead of CUPS.

Personally, I don't like web interfaces very much -- it's slower

(Sorry for my bad english... :)

[newbie] Replace Metacity with Sawfish on 9.1?

2003-03-31 Per discussione Keith Christian
The Sawfish window manager does not seem to be in the list of packages
shipping with the 9.1 download edition.

1. I see that Metacity is now the default WM for Gnome, is there any specific
technical reason why Sawfish was displaced in favor of Metacity?

2. Should I want to install Sawfish as the default WM is there a good
procedure written up somewhere on how to do it? Or is it as simple as using
RPM to remove Metacity and installing Sawfish from the RPM's instead?

Thanks,

[newbie] Windowmanager

2002-11-05 Per discussione Christian Goldstein
Hiya!

I've been using KDE for the past few days and now I feel like I could switch
to some other Windowmanager ( I was told KDE isnt the best choice when it
comes to speed and reliability ), or at least *try* to do so. I remember
using WindowMaker a few months ago, but I didn't like it that much. I mean,
it *was* fast and reliable, but I had some problems with the interface and
unless someone here can recommend a good place to get a tutorial or some
additional information, I would think twice before going back at it.

Okay, to make a long story short: if anyone could either recommend me a good
windowmanager or give me a hint on where I can find some background
information on them (WindowMaker in particular), I'd be thankful.

Thanks in advance!

[newbie] Music from the window

2002-04-29 Per discussione Christian Wohlfahrt

Hi all,

first post here, sorry to sound like a Linux dummy, but I am (not only a
Mandrake newbie ;-)

So, I have managed to get 8.2 installed (after trying with RedHat, which
seemed to dislike my partitioning...).
I now have to work my way through all these Howto's, and I'd like to listen
to some music while doing that.
I found this player that looks like Winamp, buried deep in the startmenu
somewhere. So far, so good.
Now I have plenty of MP3's, but they are on a W2K NTFS partition, which I
couldn't find with Konqueror (seems to me that this is the explorer
counterpart, right?).
If I understood correctly, I have to do something like mounting a drive or
so, but I have no idea how to do that.

My question: Is there another program (or package) that I need to do this?
And if it's not worth an answer, can I find it in the HowTo's ?

Thanks a lot
Christian

[newbie] LiLo conflicts with Win NT - What to do?

2001-09-20 Per discussione Møller Andreas Christian

Hi there!

I recently tried to install Mandrake on the very same HD (3GB for WinNT
boot(C:), 20 GB for NT (D:), 18GB for Mandrake) like my current Win NT.
Everything worked fine, until I tried to start NT again. NT could not find
Disk D, where all the applications are stored. The Diskmanager told me,
there was an unknown partition. setting the FS type under linux from 85 to 5
enhanced the problem not significantly. After removing LiLo from the mbr NT
worked again.
Now my question is: Does anybody know how to install LiLo without harming
the partitiontable information NT requires? I would appreciate any hint on
how to do this. Couldn't really find anything...

 hiho andreas

well - u mean u were able to boot into windows nt ?
but u werent able to start any applications ?
Yes, due to the fact that NT could not retrieve any information on the
filesystem or the size of the second primary NTFS-partition. It could,
however, recognize the partioning data after setting linux ext2 to type 5.
The filesystem stayed unknown.

under win NT arent u able to hide the unknown partitions ?
or - assign the unknown partition another drive letter than D ?
It does not look like a letter assignment issue to me. NT doesn't assign any
letter except from C, since it is not able to identify the filesystems on
the remaining partitions as long as LiLo is in operation.
(i assume that the unknown partition is a primary and your
 former D part.
 is a logical drive)
No, it is a second primary labeled as unknown when LiLo active.
u could also try to re-install linux - installing it *not* to
 a primary,
but secondary(logical) partition (i think it should be
 possible - consult
 your manual)
OK, I'll RTFM. Linux is still working smoothly when I reinstall LiLo which
spoils NT operations, so I won't reinstall Linux, I guess.

Thanks quay.

RE: [newbie] letting computer run overnight without overheating

I have a pc with celeron 633 mhz processor with intel 810e

it be safe if I try to let it on overnight? I love Mandrake
 and have been
using it forever since 7.2, but it takes so long to boot up
 whenever I want
to use it and I couldn't use the built in Standby mode
 because that seems to
be only working with windows. I am hoping to be able to just
 leave it on
all day long that I don't have to watch it boot up.
Most computers in school are ran 24/7, but they are mostly all air
conditioned and mostly are not placed near books. Does
 anyone know if it is
safe for a home user to leave his/her computer on continuously?

Thanks very much for your help

 Eric

Hi Eric!

Basically: Yes, you may let your computer run 24/7 and most likely it wont
overheat and newer mainboards have an automatic shutdown option anyway. I
have never seen a temperature triggered shutdown below 35 centigrades, which
depends on the fan of course...

BUT: No, I would not recommend it. I were sysop at a Windows-LAN at
university and had to observe, that hardware lifetime in general is
significantly shortend by 24/7. I.e. harddisks, RAM and mainboards fail -
although I have never had a CPU-problem. Lifetime was as limited as about 9
to 12 months meantime between failure.

BTW: I am surprised to hear that Mandrake boots slowly, since mine is up and
running within 1 Min (approx). Do run a special config?

andreas

Is there a way to increase this length so that the full hostname can be

Hi Dean,

Likely your system is set up (properly so) without the current
directory in the path.

To invoke a shell script named, say, foo.sh, type this:

./foo.sh (Notice the leading dot-slash) and it should run. This
indicates that the script is in the current directory: dot represents

[newbie] What to download to install Apache+PHP+MySQL on the Mandrake 7.2 store bought 4 CD distribution

2001-03-23 Per discussione Keith Christian

I wanted to expand a bit on Wayne Larmon's list (from a
Usenet post found by using on groups.google.com) of files
that will get Apache + PHP + MySQL running together on a
store-bought boxed copy of Mandrake 7.2. I bought the
boxed copy expecting a complete webserver as the Mandrake
7.0 downloaded copy had.

This is Wayne's list with two dependencies I found
(perl-DBI and perl-ExtUtils) added in.

The numbers on the left are the install order, and on the
right is the filesize and exact filename on my system. I
downloaded the RPM's from http://rpmfind.net. When
searching for these RPM's enter only the text to the left
of the version number (eg. apache-common, MySQL-shared,
apache-mod_perl, etc.)

To check the webserver, install the files in the order
given, and point the browser to
http://localhost.localdomain. If the webserver does not
start, reboot and try again.

The www home page "index" file is in
/var/www/html/index.shtml by default.

*** YOU MUST BE THE ROOT USER FOR THIS TO INSTALL PROPERLY ***

To install, use RPM with a command line similar to:

rpm -i apache-common-1.3.14-2mdk.i586.rpm

DID NOT INSTALL 619029 Mar 22 14:22 MySQL-devel-3.23.23-1mdk.i586.rpm

"DID NOT INSTALL" means that I have not yet installed these
packages but probably will sometime soon. They do not
appear to be needed for the Apache + PHP + MySQL system.

I would like to see someone post a list of the RPM's for
Mandrake 7.2 in order to have a complete development
version with GTK+, etc. so that when trying to compile
source the libraries, etc. are already there.

[newbie] ZipCD 650 USB CD recorder and Mandrake 7.2

2001-02-28 Per discussione Keith Christian

Has anyone gotten this (ZipCD 650 USB) to work with the stock store-bought

If so, are there any config file changes necessary? Should the ZipCD USB be
plugged in before Mandrake is booted to be detected, or will Mandrake
detect/configure without a reboot?

Thanks!

[newbie] DEVELOPMENT setup

2001-02-27 Per discussione Keith Christian

Running Mandrake 7.2 - where is the "developer's" install chosen? I have
reinstalled using both Expert and Custom, and have chosen "install ALL
packages" but still am missing many of the howto's (usually under
/usr/share/) and don't have some of the programs to compile (some
programs I try to compile using configure then make say I don't have a
library propertly setup, etc.)

What to do without a total reinstall? Will an Update install allow these
choices so that I can get all the development files installed?

Hi Ryan,

That helps alot because it answers my question. I'm AMAZED that the store
bought boxed version (4 CD's) doesn't have the complete development tools.

So - you are saying that I need to download the two CD ISO images from the
website, burn CD's and use those, is that correct?

Or - is there a list of the RPM's to download that will fill in the missing
development tools?

Thanks again,

If youre using the distributed version of mandrake 7.2 (i.e. store bought
boxed version) Complete does not come with any development tools and thus
doesnt allow you to choose between workstation, development or server. to
do
this you must purchase Mandrake 7.2 Powerpack Deluxe or download Mandrake
 from their website.

 Hope this helps,
 Ryan

Im sure you can download just the RPM's you need and install them manually
in conjunction with your copy of Mandrake 7.2 Complete, however I, being
on
a dialup decided to just shell out another 70 bucks for Powerpack Deluxe
so
I cant verify this. It angers me that Mandrake would release a boxed sre
called Complete and fail to say anywhere on the box that development tools
are not included. In order to find this out you've got to visit their
website and only thne do they tell you that development tools are not
included. I wound up wasting 30 bucks on Complete thinking it was
complete,
when infact it wasnt. Couldnt return the Complete version either because
the
software had already been opened and the retailer wouldnt exchange it for
powerpack deluxe, so im stuck with both versions now. Anywas as for a list
of the RPM's youll need to install to make your Complete version a
Developmentally complete version, I'm not sure if there is one or not,
perhaps someone else on this list can answer that question. My suggestion
to
you is to download the 2 CD's from the site and burn them if you cant or
dont want to spend another 60 dollars for the Powerpack Deluxe. A full
install fo Powerpack Deluxe is 1626 pachages totalling around 6 gigs of
space, compare and contrast with Complete hehe.

Good luck, and flamedammit Mandrake, change your advertising scheme!
People could deem this false advertisement./flame

[newbie] Reinstalled Windows 98, how to get Linux to boot again?

Have an 8 gig hard disk with Windows 98 on the primary partition.

I had to reinstall Windows 98 a few days ago, ow I cannot boot to
Mandrake 7.0. The Linux partition should be OK. How do I reinstall

[newbie] Missing some programs on Mandrake 7.2

2001-02-15 Per discussione Keith Christian

I used the "custom" install on my store-bought Mandrake 7.2 set, and some
programs that were installed on Mandrake 7.0 are not there, among them:
Apache, PHP, MySQL, and some smaller utilities such as mtools, compress,
etc.

Have these been removed from the CD set, or did I choose an incorrect
install option? I checked "install everything" from Custom install, and
thought that would provide me with everything I had with Mandrake 7.0 and
maybe more.

Note, this is not an upgrade, but a fresh install of 7.2 on a different
machine.

Thanks!

On an older version of Mandrake Linux, (6.5 and 7.0) the Apache web

After doing a Custom/Install ALL files installation on 7.2, I don't see
this. Was the Apache web server even installed? If not, what's the

Which of the four CD's has the installation RPM's with PHP compiled for

[newbie] Understanding Program Locations

2000-12-16 Per discussione Carson Christian

Hello All. I've just installed system 7.2 yesterday. I'm completely new to
linux, and this is my first shot at it. As A long time windows user, I am
finding myself very confused by the way linux handles application storage. I
would like it if someone could explain a few things to me.

1) There appear to be nothing like an .exe file for linux software, where is
the program itself? For instance, if I go into the gimp directory, I see all
it's support files, but no executable. However, if I Alt-F2 and type in
"gimp", it runs just fine. Where is the program stored?

2) This is more specific I downloaded the latest Mozilla milestone, and
would like to try it under linux. However, I cannot figure out how to install
it. There appear to be no files that "run" when clicked on, even though i
downloaded the version "with installer". Help?

3) System clock. Every time I reboot, my clock gets all screwed up. I reset
it, and it's fine until I reboot again, but then it's off by a few hours.
Ideas?

Thanks alot in advance! I'm really liking KDE, but I need to know more about
how software and the file system works before I can be happy with it.

[newbie] Unable to install 7.2, suspected HD controller problem

2000-11-22 Per discussione Christian Blouin

Hi,

hardware is AMD thuderbird 850 /Asus A7V motherboard / 128 Mb SDRAM Seagate
barracuda 30Go ATA66 (Promise 66 controller)( 15 Go partition for WinME) /
Asus v7100 GeForce MX 32Mb / Panasonic R/RW 32X

Red Hat fails to install, which is no much surpise with my ATA66
controller. I got an install boot image from the Promise web site and it
installed fine. Unfortunately, the boot disk made by Linux does not boot my
machine and the one provided at Promise do not work for some reasons. So I
got Mandrake 7.2, that fully support ATA66.

Alas! The install loops at the "create filesystem" step (mind you, after
successfully detecting my hard drive) asking me if I have a SCSI controller
(or card?) and NOT taking no for answer. I have then to hit the infamous
reset button and move on to something else.

The UDMA-HOWTO does not work for me, Linux ignores my commands:

linux ide2=0X9800, ide3=0X9000,...
as well as it ignores
linux ide0=... ide1=...

Some suggested to downgrade to 33 instead of 66, which is fine with me, but
I don't know how to do this.

That was the background. I'd like to know if anyone have been through a
similar situation and how they solved it.

I just cannot believe that I can't run any Linux on my machine that I
bought especially for this.

Have a good day,

    Christian

[newbie] Unable to launch Photopaint

Instead the following message appears:

"Unable to add FontTastic font server to the font path. The font server is

I'm currently using Mandrake Linux 7.2. That was detected during the
Photopaint installation process.

Any ideas?

[newbie] ML7.2 and Printer + ML7.2 and GeForce

2000-11-07 Per discussione Christian

Hi...

I have two problems with my Mandrake 7.2 system

1. I've selected the XFree4.0.1 packages during the installation process. My
card has been identified as "GeForce 256 (generic) GeForce 256 DDR PCI"
(according to HardDrake)
But now it seems to me that XFree3.3.6 is running. So I don't get hardware
acceleration for my GeForce256 (DDR) which is an APG card.
I've installed the NVIDIA-Drivers from the NVIDIA homepage. In the
documentation it says:
"To use the new 2D module, simply modify the Device section of the XF86Config
file and replace: Driver "nv" with Driver "nvidia"
But I can't find that "nv" line in my XF86Config.
On linuxnewbie.org I found an article about installing X4.0.1 and the NVIDIA
drivers from scratch. Do I have to do this cause there's something wrong with
the Mandrake 7.2 X4.0.1 packages?

2. I can't use my printer with Mandrake 7.2
lp says: "error - no default destination available."
I tried to reconfigure with the Mandrake tools (PrinterDrake) but after the
message "Reading the CUPS driver database" nothing else happens.
The printer icon on the desktop says:" Unable to connect to CUPS server,
check options."
cupsd and lpd are loaded (cupds in even show twice after typing "ps -A").
The testpage during the installation process has been printed correctly
(although blue looks like mauve).
HardDrake displays this:
   Manufacturer: HEWLETT-PACKARD
   Model: DESKJET 890C
   Device: /dev/lp0
   Bus-Type: Parallel

Someone told me to start a browser and type in 'http://localhost:631' to
reconfigure the printer settings but this produces an error message:
"ERROR The requested URL could not be retrieved"

I'm really unexperienced with Linux so if you have an idea try to explain in
easy words.

Thanx and sorry for that long eMail

On Saturday 21 October 2000 04:25, you scribled down on a piece of
electronic paper:
 1. NVIDIA provides kernel and GLX drivers for its cards. I was able to
install them in 7.1. (In fact, the installation was problemless however,
the results were not satisfactory. I was unable to run an openGL program
which was my main aim. Then I decided to move to 7.2). Well, I cannot
install these drivers in 7.2. It gives some errors concerning the
agpgart.o. And the 'insmod NVdriver' fails.
Has anyone managed to install NVIDIA drivers to Mandrake 7.2?

Recompile your kernel and enable "/dev/agpart (AGP Support)" under the
"Character devices" section. This should fix the problem :)

I'm myself running XFree 4.0.1 Mandrake 7.2beta3 on a card with the NVidia
GeForce2 chipset (asus v7700) and using the NVidia kernel and GLX drivers,
and I get better results here with Quake3 and Heavy Gear2 then I get when I
boot into windows and try there (with the latest NVidia windows drivers).

Re: [newbie] kde menus

2000-10-15 Per discussione Christian A Strømmen [Number1/NumeroUno]

paper:
I tried putting the files and folders in ~/.kde/share/applnk into a
special Gnome subdirectory but KDE didn't let me move certain files.
I logged in as root and it worked then, but KDE switched everything
back to the old situation when I logged in again as user. The second
time I used the KDE menu editor and had the basic setup I wanted, but
when I logged in again, everything was reset. There's still a GNOME
submenu with everything in the "personal" menu so I'm not doing
something silly like modifying things in root and finding no changes
in user. Logging in is slow too, it takes a minute or so longer as
KDE resets everything to the original installation. KDE is a bit too
much like Windows 95, thinks it knows what you want better than you
do. Any solutions? An alternative app-launcher might be good,

If I'm not mistaking, this hasn't got anything to do with kde, it's a
program in mandrake that screws up your kmenu.

ps. I'm not 100% sure about this, but I'm running 7.2beta3 and had problems
with my menus myself because of a mandrake program called menu-install or
something like that.

[newbie] 7.1, remove grub and fix my Windows 98 hard drive

2000-08-10 Per discussione Keith Christian

Installed 7.1 this weekend. The install went much
less smoothly than with 6.5 and 7.0. I have two hard
disks, Mandrake 7.1 was installed on the second hard
drive.

LILO would not install, complained about some error on
/dev/hda2. I then installed grub. It gets to the
stage1 prompt and hangs. I also cannot boot back to
my Windows 98 hard disk even after FDISK /MBR and
other old standby tricks.

I have bought Norton Systemworks 2000 in hopes of
fixing this problem, which manifests itself as
"invalid media error."

How can I fix my Windows 98 hard disk without
reformatting, and how can I get rid of grub and use
LILO instead (which worked fine under releases 6.5 and
7.0?)

Thanks.

Yep, I had the same problem. But over the course of 2 weeks I've figured out
how to fix it.

Go to /etc/X11/. In there, there will be a file named X
which is actually just a link to the 3.3.6 X server. So remove that symlink
(rm X) and then create a new X symlink, except that this one will point to
the 4.0 xserver (ln -s /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 X) Now restart X, and you
*should* be back in X4.0.

And on to that topic, what do you use to configure X 4.0? None of the
configuration tools seem to work for X 4.0, and only end up making you go back
to 3.3.6.

RE: [newbie] Installation of Mandrake 7.0

2000-01-24 Per discussione Dam, Christian

I had that problem as well. I solved it by creating a small bootable dos
partition and then running /dosutils/autoboot/install.bat. This boots into a
menu where one of the items is DrakX from CD-rom.

Good luck.

Sincerely,
Christian

I just tried to install mandrake 7.0, but is doesn't work. It says that
there is not a mandrake cdrom in the cdromdrive and hangs after that (during

the cdromprobing).

My cdrom is an atapi liteon 32x/aku.

I've tried to put the cdrom on a fat32partition, but that also doesn't work

Please help

Try this one. I'm using it right now, and it supports resuming.

[newbie] Printers

1999-11-27 Per discussione Christian Charles Opp

I have a Canon bjc-4300 printer. I would like to install the
software so that I can use it. I am using Mandrake 6.0 . Anyone have an
idea on how to tackle this? I emailed Canon's tech support with my
question, and I doubt I find out anything positive. Thanks for the help.

Re: [newbie] Changing monitor settings

1999-11-11 Per discussione Christian Charles Opp

I have an ATI 8mb video charger and a Compaq presario 1525 monitor from
one of my older systems (1997 is the age of the monitor).
I tried the XConfigure and I couldn't find it. So do I go into any
console and type in the code? Because I did that and it didn't work.
Anyway I'll keep looking thanks.

XConfigurator may very well work for you. If, like I do, you have a video
card or monitor that isn't supported with the current version of XFree86,
then it is a bit more involved. I use xf86config which allows you to
manually input your vertical and horizontal sync ranges. It is done in
console, so you are not using the X envirnoment. It might be best to tell
us what monitor you are using and what video card for more specifics.

When I installed linux-mandrake 6.1 it asked me what the settings were
for the monitor. At the time I didn't know. However, now I do know and
would like to change it. How do I do this? Do I go into XConfigurator and
if so how do I do it? Second, do I install my video card driver? I am very
new to the whole Linux thing. Any help is greatly appreciated.

 thanks,
